  • 2 years ago I featured my mother-in-law's plants including her Totem Pole Cactus. Here I am revisiting her yard and I was surprised at the growth that she achieves on her cactus.

    Very interesting, but it makes sense that you could get away with regular potting mix in Las Vegas because it's already a desert climate. Should be a really interesting experiment though to compare growth!
    I also lol'd at the "don't bring your dirty shoes in my house" bit 😂

    Wow!!! Those are so big , fat and healthy!!! Don't have any of these in the greenhouse. When I was living in so California, these were very expensive back in the 1980s!!! You guys are very lucky to have them!!! She has done a great job growing these!!! Thanks for sharing Ana!!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌷🌴🌸🌿🌻🍀🌾💐🌱🌳🌹🪴😃👍

    Wow that's a lot of growth for 2 years. Are you sure she's not feeding it a super strength fertiliser? 😅 Thank you for sharing with us, Ana. Have a lovely day from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌺🌸🏜☕

      lol! She does not use any chemical fertilizer. But she sometimes throws her scrap vegetables randomly in her backyard. When the dill plants die during our summertime, they just naturally decompose in the soil. I guess that is some form of fertilizer. 😊

    Those big fat totem been on my wishlist... they only sell tiny 4" pot size here in the Philippines. Normally, 7"tall 3" thick. Your mother-in-law grows them really well.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  8 місяців тому

      They should grow pretty fast with your climate there in the Philippines. Just make sure they are in a well draining soil. You have growing season all year round. 😊

    what wonderful specimens! I don't understand if this plant should be watered rarely or often...how did your mother-in-law's totem pole cactus grow so quickly?😮😊

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  8 місяців тому +2

      In our climate here in the desert, it needs to be watered more often. She does not water often but her soil retains moisture than the typical cactus soil mix. 🙂🌵

    Your mother in law has the same ability as me to propagate cactus. But in my case, in Dallas Texas, I grow Opuntia. I have SO MANY Opuntias. Instarted out with 3 pads, and in 3 years it turned into over 60 individual plants. I got some from the park, some from my neighborhood. And dozens of propagations from the ones that were growing in my yard when I moved to my house

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  8 місяців тому

      You are the “master” of Opuntias. 😊 You can give them out too for friends. 🌵🌵🌵

    👍🏼 to your MIL!! Totems are among my favorite cactus.
    I have the same situation with my friend - we bought our totems at the same time, but hers have grown to be huge. Mine is about 2 feet tall. I planted mine in a pot and instead of growing tall, it’s sprouting quite a few arms.
    Thanks for this great information - I’m repotting mine and will add richer soil.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  8 місяців тому +1

      That is awesome! At least yours are growing arms that you can propagate. Mine grows so slow and has developed zero arms. Lol 😆

    Hmm, with the Dill growing all around the plant I wonder if Mother in Law secretly planted the remains of a fish dinner underneath hers? If I'm planting a tree I like to plant something tasty for it underneath 😁😁 With the crack in the wall behind, rake out the pointing and put some Helifix spiral bar in the gaps across the cracks before pointing it back in. It should stop the whole thing falling apart for a while 🙂🌵🌵

    Just out of interest does your mother in law get flowers on her totem pole cacti?

    • @CactusCaffeine

      Yes. They are not as interesting as the plant itself. The flowers are small and brownish yellow in color.
