When I am out painting and need to dispose of my paint water, I carry a zip bag with a couple of kitchen sponges, then just dump the water in there. It holds a lot, doesn't spill and I can rinse and dry them when I get home . Also this eliminates the extra weight of another bottle. Just something I have found that works for me. I have enjoyed this video!!
As a psychiatrist with a lifelong passion for art I have to thank you for speaking about your personal experiences. Having the courage to seek help is often 90% of the struggle. Working in a medical facility during the pandemic pushed me back to art as a personal self-therapeutic modality, as did taking up meditation. I can see how being in Nature is your form of meditation and it’s beautiful! Do you, like me, ever struggle with creating art because of concerns about its impact on the environment or even cluttering your home? That’s been the biggest barrier to creation for me: I don’t want to make a million paintings of art journals, using precious natural resources, and have them just lie around my house. So happy to see you finding your way and living a meaningful life in such a gorgeous setting with a supportive partner!
I don’t like the idea of generating lots of paintings that just sit around either, so I turn most of my warm up artwork or painting for fun pieces into cards for family and friends. My grandkids think it’s part of their present and all crowd around to see what card comes out of the envelope this time. That makes me so happy. It’s a win, win. Of course they’re all small so I get my art fix without using tons of resources. Just a thought ….
Yes I think about that a lot! But here's the thing...you can't improve without practice. You'll never get to the "this is a finished painting worthy of a frame for someone to buy" stage without all those stepping stones (for me those live in the sketchbook usually) In addition...some people keep photo albums. I keep sketchbooks! They transport me back to my life experiences and travels, and I can share them with people the same way. I also sell prints of my sketches, I make videos and share the content everywhere, so it doesn't just die alone on the shelf, it lives forever online
This is why I use watercolor paint and water mixable oils. I also use sketches as birthday cards, thank you cards, and I figure this is the best I can do. I’d also like to recommend an iPad and procreate. You can do digital “painting” for the meditational aspect there with no paper waste and maintain a very minimal environment in your house ❤
Sarah, thank you so much - for this video specifically and all the work you're sharing! I can't emphasise enough how much support it gives! I think your channel is one of the best YT discoveries for the last few months, it's such a nice and cozy place to hang out. Truly appreciate it. ❤
You are excellent at photography. Your videography always amazes me. I love watching your views of Scotland. You are on another level of art, the stratosphere, my friend!
What a gift it is to have a passion that guides your life, and how beautifully you carry this gift, Sarah. You're a special being and I loved hearing how you have evolved in your life with this marvelous passion. Feeling really grateful that you're sharing it with us. 🙏❤🙏
Your openness and honesty about yourself and your art is refreshing. A lot of the questions were very well thought out and your answers were very informative and useful. Thanks again for sharing your journey.
I enjoyed this so much, Sarah! It's wonderful learning more about you - and from you!!! Very inspirational in many ways - thank you and will LOVE following your journey along the coast!!! 💙 Feliz viaje!!! (Happy voyage!) ❤
Thank you for taking the time to share this. Such thoughtful and creative wisdom. It is a joy and an inspiration to witness someone living their authentic life, and of course you made it so visually engaging too. Looking forward to your epic adventure along the coast and beyond!
Thank you so much!! I guess what I am most grateful for is hearing you say it’s ok not to lock yourself into one medium or process. It’s even good to enjoy experiencing new things. It’s a a learning process!! I needed to hear that! I was feeling that meant I really didn’t know what I was doing!
If anyone looks like they know exactly what they are doing 100% of the time, they are a really good actor. If you get to know them, you see no one has a clue 😂 Ok maybe some do... but it ain't me!
So thorough, specific and candid. I love your enthusiasm and personality. I am also impressed about your candor regarding anxiety and depression. I have followed you for two years and you have inspired me to try gouache and do more sketching.
I learned so much from this Sarah! And I laughed a little bit when you said going plein air with other people is not about you but it's about them - that's sooo true
Thanks for answering our question about books! I actually added that question when I was looking around at James Gurney’s books 😂 Great idea to look into video game art books-Assassin’s Creed Origins was gorgeous!
Yea I LOVE those games, I used to just wander around and explore all the beauty they designed…the LIGHT was so gorgeous. I even painted from the screen a few times
Your videos are treasures. Wow, I suspect they cost you lots of time to produce, they show so much love for what you do, they are artistically and estatically amazing. Oh and I don't know how you do that magic, but the drone views are breathtaking and you can make screenshots of every second and everyone of those screens would be a perfect picture to frame it and put on a wall. Awesome work accomplished! Thank you so much for creating it all ❤
Some videos take much longer to edit, so I always have to weigh the value of it, because time is our most precious resource. FYI I have a palm-sized drone that I learned how to fly :)
@@SarahBurnsStudio I have no clue how you do that. It doesn't seem you are watching where it flyes and if it is focusing on you while it does its job! How do you do that?? 😁 I am soooo puzzled!
I would absolutely love to see you keep a sketch journal of your Coastal Hiking. Not a full on finished pieces thing, but more of a day to day, illustrated travel notebook, with pencil sketches and rough notes. Would make a fantastic companion to any future works/books you might create based on your hikes.
That's exactly what I'm doing. I have 2 sketchbooks going, one is lighter weight. Both have tons of little sketches, notes, and more like telling the story rather than finished paintings
Thanks, Great video. I just found your videos because after painting in acrylics and oils for years I felt a need to experiment with gouache. I be taking a deep dive into the rest of your library. Thanks for doing this.
I loved your paintalongs on twitch! i learned a lot of the basics for watercolor in these - so much as we have a paintalong each thursday and i show people how to use watercolours which is mindblowing for me! Thanks for being so inspiring!
Hi Sarah, Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all these questions and pouring your heart out so honestly 💜 I'm going to treasure all these tips and try to resist the urge to quit my job and start painting 24/7 🤭 I hope I will be able to do the same coastal trail painting feat where I grew up in Italy (Puglia region, to be precise, look it up! it's gorgeous!) You're my favourite artist to follow the journey of and every time I read something you wrote or watch a video from you the admiration grows stronger. Thank you for all you do!
It’s my dream to visit/paint in Italy!! I fantasise about travelling around there for a year in a studio-camper-van 😅 I couldn’t do that but still. Fun to dream.
@@SarahBurnsStudio absolutely! Never say never! (it can also be broken down like your Scotland coastal trail painting journey 😊) I wish your business booms and blooms so you'll be able to make all your dreams come true! 💜🍀
Sarah, I really head over heels fell (and still falling LOL) in love with your art and your journey as an artist! 🥰 Keep up the good work and passion! You've inspired me so much, you're the person who convinced me to go back to art (which is my passion and hobby at childhood) after decades of not practicing it. Thank you so much for reminding me that art can still exist in my life! You're super amazing! 🥰🥰🥰
This was a great video, touched on so many interesting topics! I really enjoyed seeing the paintings on the side… I so need to get caught up on past tutorials since I haven’t been a patreon member very long. I’m going to comment on the most non-art bit of your Q&A. I do the packing thing too ☺️… months in advance of going somewhere. I love choosing which bag and packing cubes to use and then selecting just the right items. Now that I also get to think about which art supplies to pack, the enjoyment has quadrupled lol. I have a car trip in a couple of weeks for a short vacation in a neighbouring province and I’m going to get some painting time at the beaches/parks… I have been considering which palettes/art supplies to bring since we booked the cottage 😂. My lists are ever evolving for both art and non-art packing!! I think it’s all a part of anticipating the vacation, it makes it more enjoyable for me.
Haha that’s awesome. Do you also wait until the day before to suddenly change something drastic, then suddenly have to repack after months of planning?? 😆 I do that so often and it drives me nuts! But lately my biggest challenge is going for the “ultralight” mode. This adds a whole new challenge
@@SarahBurnsStudio lol I have had the “drastic change at last minute” happen, but *usually* I’m pretty good at sticking to what I planned out. I commented just recently on Sketches ‘n Scrubs travel vlog about my packing approaches. Very strange, two art channels and here I am talking about packing! Anyway, for car trips, I tend to be an over-packer and over-planner. If anyone in my travel party needs anything, I have probably packed it! When we used to do big family vacations with inlaws/nieces/nephews/etc, everyone knew if they needed scissors/tape/some weird spice, I probably packed it and had it in my cottage. A lot of pre-planning went into that to ensure enough room lol. Now, flights are a different story. I become a total minimalist on a flight because I refuse to check a bag (after more than one lost checked bag). So, if we’re talking about a flight, I do even more planning in order to reduce what I’m taking but still have everything I think I’ll need. My first flight with watercolour supplies should be very interesting indeed. Can’t wait to try!!
Thanks for sharing some inspiration & insight into your thoughts, progress & process, & how your art journey has & is going. Always wonderful to spend time together.
@@SarahBurnsStudio you are so welcome!! I could certainly say more; Specifically, loved watching your paintings develop as you were speaking. Also, your advice is very good. I have no idea how to get started with passive income as an artist, so it is really inspiring to hear you talk about it. Your paintings are lovely and I always enjoy them. Thanks for putting yourself out on the UA-cam!
I just found you. This is such a great video. You have given us so much valuable information. I am just experimenting with Gouche and really appreciate your instruction. I use watercolor most of the time and have joined a local watercolor society that meets once a month. There are many expert artists in the group who inspire me. I am also in a plein air group that also meets once each month. We go to various locations in Tidewater, Virginia. I learn so much and enjoy being with other artists. Also, ask you doctor about taking vitamin D3 and K3 for your bones. Your advice about taking good care of yourself was so important. Happy painting.
Hello Sarah, your videos are a delight and really addictive. They make me wish to pack my painting gear and accompany you on your walks along the Scottish coastline. Geli from Bavaria
Pivot! That was so the first thing I thought of when you said the words. It made me laugh. Thank you for this talke, I liked listening to it but I also enjoyed your real time paintings. Also, the earial shot where your tripod is standing on the edge of that cliff gave me HUGE anxiety haha. I love painting outside, but still I get really anxious with people looking at my page. Though I did get the loveliest compliment from a person walking by whom I did not even realize had seen my work. It still brings a smile to my lips even though it was weeks ago. So sweet. Also, thank you so much for answering my question! I really appreciate you taking the time for it and it made me think. I've noted it down as I think I need to remind myself of it regularly, but I will work on it. Again, thank you for your time.
On a previous video, where you discuss how you make your living as an artist, you mentioned that at the beginning you did not budget for your art supplies. I made a comment but it was not meant as criticism . Rather, amazement and admiration at someone being able to pursue their passion without having to worry about monetary matters. It is really more about myself than anything else. I grew up with a horrible narcissist mother that made it very clear that I will never be allowed to pursue my passion for painting. So I went with my second passion and studied Philology and got out of there as soon as I could . I have always been single (my choice) so thinking about budgets is a priority in my life. I am sad that I was prevented from pursuing my true life passion but at the same time, I am so happy for the wonderful life I have enjoyed, all the wonderful friends and experiences and I am lucky that I found a way to go back to it after such a long time. Thank you for your wonderful inspiring videos.
I understand. I think everyone has a different way of looking at money. I guess I have a weird relationship with money. Just don’t care about it beyond the ‘necessity’ of it in today’s society. Meaning, as long as I can pay bills, buy food, buy the things I need to do what I do, then whatever extra I have goes towards enjoying life in all the different ways. Now, that’s not to say I don’t have an emergency fund or create funding goals so I can buy products, trips, etc. - that is definitely part of owning a business that is unavoidable. Life can end at any second. Money sitting in a bank account somewhere is meaningless. I’m resourceful and I know what value my skills have and that I can always figure out a way to make money if worst comes to worst.
Hi Sarah! I'm a bit late but loved this Q&A!! It was so interesting to hear your story. How there have been ups and downs but they have all lead to this moment right now. My dream is to one day work part time as a clinical psychologist (I'm graduating next year!) and partly as an artist. It's so inspiring and interesting to hear your story and I love to always listen to you, your insights and your view on life and how you have navigated through it! For me too, creativity has always been my companion. I went through a bit rouch patch in my life during the last couple of years and the moments when I painted on your live streams brought me so much joy! Art and creativity can bring us so much meaning in our lives but it can also connect us with other like-minded spirits. I wish you all the best! Looking forward to more painting tutorials once I have more money to spare and join the Patreon (or Kofi) again!
Appreciate your tips on burn out and artist block. I so agree that we have to be well-rounded to be better productive. Hope your carpal tunnel gets better! May your cup always be full, Sarah! 😄
Sara this was very interesting and enlightening. I love your art❤️ Scotland is so beautiful! I am so relieved to find out you went to art school. I thought you just started out painting great from the beginning. It makes me feel better as an artist that you had to work hard at it and paint often to get where you are as an artist today. You are an inspiration! Thank youfor taking the time to share your personal journey and struggles.
Dear Sarah, I really liked the vertical split screen idea with this Q & A, where your videos of paintings were on the right too. I loved how you planned for these questions for months, organized them into 3 sections for us, and thanks for mentioning my name with the questions. So much fun to hear our name on your channel. Shux. I am so proud of you overcoming your introvert ways as you say, to sit with us and keep a clear structure with you to help you feel more comfortable in the interview with us, as if we were all having tea one on one with you. I watched a few of your videos recently, and said to my partner Patrick yesterday, "Lets go West.......! ......I am inspired to explore nature, because this woman that I follow on her UA-cam channel is on a painting trip and hiking around Scotland." So this is the second time I have said this to him about your channel, and my new motivation! I feel it is our duty in Sydney in our mild and gorgeous Wintery, Springy weather with sunshine and blue skies where I felt the need to celebrate the weather, by being immersed in it, for all the people in the world, where a Summer, is still cool, and grey. We also have had floods with so much rain for months, and so it makes it even more of a reason to enjoy "a normal sunny Wintery day" My partner repeats it back to me, "So let me get this straight, you want to drive West, to somewhere for a long drive, so you can paint nature, because a woman in Scotland inspired you to travel, because that is what she does?" (".....Well, yeah! ...... and we should do this for all the people in the Northern hemisphere who have bad Winters...and can't enjoy them outside" My lovely partner is my carer, so he drives me places, helps me dress, brings me breakfast and delicious froffy crema lattes on our De Longhi machine, directly to my bed with my bamboo bed table, makes me crepes with real maple syrup and lemon, with a lovely proud Bonsoy coffee with froff 25mm higher than the cup itself. He asks me, what do you need right now? Also I would like to chat to you about chronic pain. I have had my arms and wrists hurt and ache so badly, I had to bandage my arms at night to my elbows, look like a real mummy, frighten my partner in bed, and take a taxi years ago a long way home from my woodwork teaching job, as I couldn't cut timber on a bandsaw as my wrists hurt so much, where I also thought there was something wrong not unlike what I thought carpal tunnel was like. It turns out it was one of my medications..... I stopped taking my monthly pill, Levlen ED, pain gone the next day! I also think if you had an allergy test (a blood test to take some blood from your finger) for foods out of 220 base foods, here in Australia quite expensive at $400AUD, but it is worth it, and far better than eliminating one thing at a time, you may find that along with leaky gut, you are allergic to a food you have often, which gives pain in all joints and gives fatigue and arthritis all over. It is usually the one food you enjoy the most that could be the allergy out of 5 out of 5, which means that the food attacks the white blood cells in one count, and so there are less white blood cells in this count under the microscope. The usual ones are cows milk, wheat, yeast, preservative, sugar, and more so if these are in combination. Also, my neurologist found that my migraines were caused by excessive paracetamol, again I stopped, and no migraines! I am investigating them further too with my hormones, pre-menopause reasons too... I hope that gives you some insight, a cause, or something you could also investigate further. Never sufffffaaaa in pain! In kindred spirit, Eliza Most Beautiful Day is Today! Monday 15th of August 2022; 12:36pm Australia xx PS: In my bed office,, but getting up now for a shower, and to do some more work in my Etchr A4, landscape, white linen...230gsm PPS: Thank your inspiration, Sarah, for getting me up and out yesterday, from a great distance, and I enjoyed my 2nd page of nature journalling. (See John Muir Laws youtuber) We drove to Auburn, Westly direction, and I took a sprig of Sydney Green wattle in bloom, to make a circle picture in the car. (Previously drawn a circle with a compass, so they are ready, and again thanks for this inspiration) While we did picnic in the bush in a new place, with yummy takeaway Pakistan food, wrapped in pieces of thin freshly made warm bread and succulent spicy Chicken korma, cucumber and mint yoghurt, it was too cold for us weather wise, so we went and sat in the car. Meanwhile Patrick had a walk..while I happily sat with my yellow and green wattle on my lap and drew with my R & K sketch ink in olive, "Emma" in my EF green Pelikan fountain pen... I finished the circle study at home yesterday, so today "I will look at it, and see if I can do another page today....." PPPS: Endep 100mg per day, helps me for 5 things, eco anxiety, eco depression, motivation, sleep, and pain. I am 70 percent better on it! When I say eco, I mean external, local and global issues affect me as an empath. Sitting for me, rather than being in bed with endometriosis, complex trauma or fatigue, is also a good thing for my muscles in my core, so "pondering" in my studio counts as work for me. xx
So much info! I have thought about getting an allergy test, but it’s just one of those things that I keep putting off. I grew up lactose intolerant for most of my life, and only in the last 8 years I’ve been able to eat dairy. Weird!
Dear Sarah, I would suggest that while you eat cows dairy, it affects you in hidden ways. Yes so try adding Bonsoy, or oats milk, or goat's milk as these taste most like milk, and they all froth well. Icecream- Coconut milk products. Yogurts- are oat, coconut, or soy. Cheese- Mini chol cheese melts and is a great cheese to eat with crackers, a soy product from Holland. My heritage is Dutch, so I love my cheese...this one, I love! Add Dr Gundry's Total Restore to help the leaky gut or enzymes and probiotic. This is the start of the issue. Add lipronil capsules(green sea mussels) or flax seed oil for cartilage to regrow it! Or eat oysters/prawns. If you also could take off wheat/yeast/sugar combinations as these combinations are bad for all joints particularly arthritis and fatigue, sore joints, and sore legs and arms, sore hands, sore knees. Add magnesium. Add sourdough 48 hr, no yeast or Helga's gluten free bread. Add rice or corn (gluten free) noodles or tacos, crackers, cake. Change pasta to Barilla gluten free, a shorter cooking time, empty white salty water once while cooking, and add more salt and a hot kettle of water. Cows milk is responsible for so many issues, at least 15 things, particularly in children. (asthma, gut issues, acne, ADD, ADHD, depression, mood swings, headaches, migraines, stomach pain after eating, fatigue, IBS to name a few!) Take a photo of this, so you have it when you next shop! You don't need to do all of these at once, but you will notice a difference in 2 days, pain will be gone! (If not, then it is likely a medication which is the cause. So assess your medications, chat to your GP, about taking some off, particularly female hormones like the pill, implanon, IUD are really bad for us, that is a whole other story....) Never sufffaaaa in agony, it stops us working as an artiste', it changes our choices of our tools that we hold, and that changes our time, and images, and places we can go. I hope your new journey pain free, will be easy. If you do a week, great, if you do 3 months, even better. With love and regards, In kindred spirit Eliza Most Beautiful Day is Today! Thank you for your inspirational videos. The painting class at the senior center is mostly acrylic users. I'm making an attempt at that medium but I've mostly used watercolors. A person in class gifted me an inexpensive assortment of gouache paints so I'm very glad to hear your preference of brushes for those mediums. I am sticking to cheap brushes for acrylics, so easy to ruin your brushes with a little inattention to cleaning. You know that good watercolor brushes can cost these days. Fortunately many of mine were purchased in the nineties. My first attempts with acrylics have been revisiting my earlier watercolors, no copyright infringement that way. Calendar photos are so tempting being of beautiful places so far away, but the images belong to someone else.
The pivot clips just make me giggle. I think of Ross every time I hear or say that word. Hahaha. Next time you do q and a, how are you hiking the entire coast? Drive somewhere, hike, remember where you leave off, and start there next?
For people in the US, the Small Business Administration has lots of resources for new and emerging small businesses-classes, videos, templates etc. that could be helpful for that side of of a creative life...
@sarahburnsstudio thank you for sharing. You are right about learning from others and being inspired by nature. It’s the reason why I follow you. I am the same way. Even though I’ve been sketching for years I still get overwhelmed by so much visual information at a location that I become paralyzed. I don’t know where to start. It’s a incredibly beautiful place and the pressure to do it justice is that I have to create an equally beautiful sketch. What I need to do is change that mind set from making a perfect sketch to just practicing and playing around with color and line. Take the pressure off myself and turn the whole experience into a fun and enjoyable one. Your color swatch idea is a wonderful example. Thanks again for sharing so much information. It’s valuable to see how other people approach and get to where they are at today.
Hi, Sarah. I will (belatedly) add my vote to others', and ask for maybe a couple of videos when you['ve gone somewhere that feels 'boring' for you. I strongly suspect you'll produce a great painting, and that we'll enjoy your work-in-progress as you work it all out, going from 'boring' (ie not your norm) which is 'for us', to being as absorbed as ever in working it through. Sp, yes, please! I also think that while all of this was important and interesting, the most important part was almost at the end when you talked about self-care, and also, about the money aspect of doing what you enjoy, and making enough for your needs. Thank you.
Thanks for this! Very inspirational. I would love to see a video with strategies and techniques on how to best approach un-ideal weather conditions - overcast/ low tonal or hue variations etc. :D
-central Wisconsin: Thank you for sharing this video with us! I love your artwork, & the person you are. Say, you spoke of passive income, well, your Voice is so soothing. I suggest looking into doing Voice Audio work for creating Audio Books for various books. Not sure how to do that. but I truly think you would do well there creating additional passive income, -which is always a PLUS! -Best wishes in your life journey & to you and Wolfie. Again. I Love your UA-cam content, and your life “learnings” messages you share with us.
Inspired totally you are 1 of my favourite artists I did an impressionist course with another artist but I stopped he taught me so much he also does workshops outdoors but you need money meanwhile I need to sell my first painting ,I guess I'll just keep plodding along I started in 2019 and love it so that matters I guess.
We are still learning about which area we want to live in more permanently - it’s good to rent while you get used to an area, because each part of Scotland can vary a lot. Plus I have to wait until I get my visa and live here for x amount of years in order to qualify for a mortgage / co-sign
The health I really know what you are talking, because I suffer a very bad accident roll over and when I in pain which is almost every day an taking narcotics and nerve block of spine I tell you my mind can not think of painting . I am 69 and 49 I had the accident and since them I paint as a hobby when I can. Take care Sarah, I love your videos and your paintings.
When you went into your origin story 😆, I would’ve really liked to hear something about your parents. There are so many people out there who would’ve loved to become artists but their parents were actively, or violently, discouraging them from making art. In my case, in addition to a whole bunch of other abusive behavior, my mother would rip up my paintings or smash any sculptures she found because she wanted me to “get a real job“. So I would’ve loved to hear something about how your parents took the news that you wanted to be an artist. Were they supportive? More importantly, were they financially supportive? ;-) How much were you debating becoming an artist versus getting a job that is seen as more stable and secure? What made you think that you could choose artist as a career? Is it because you knew you had family to fall back on in case things went really badly? Or did you already have some idea of how to make money with art once you graduated from school? Inquiring minds want to know! I think there are a lot of people out there who are wanting to make the leap into being a full-time artist, but they’re staring over the precipice wondering how bad it will be if they jump. Will they fall? If they do how bad will it be? Seeing how other people have made the leap in the past can help others make the leap themselves. Thanks for sharing your process!
My family is a sensitive subject for me so I avoid talking about it usually. But..let’s just say my parents were not part of the decision. They didn’t try to stop me, but I was independent by then. I left home at 18 to go to art school, fully supported myself with student loans and three jobs all the way through both degrees and beyond. It took longer for them to realise it was the right path for me.
@@SarahBurnsStudio wow, thank you for sharing! That is a very inspirational story. Thanks for elaborating, even though you didn’t have to, for us nosy people on the Internet. :-)
And no, before I went to art school I didn’t have a clue how to make money as an artist, except maybe to teach, but I just knew I had to do try. It’s always been who I am at my core. When I decided to quit my job I had my own savings that would last a short amount of time, but that’s why I said it was scary. I knew If I “failed” to make it as an artist I would have to go back to the design industry, which wasn’t fulfilling, but it was the only backup plan I had. No family money or safety net to fall back on except my own work ethic. Photography was lucrative as well but didn’t suit me long-term as an introvert.
You are an amazing young lady- I don’t mean this in a patronising way, I am much older than you…I could be your mum!😅- I have a question for your next Q&A. (If you’ve answered it already, that’s ok, I will get to it eventually) Do you think you will explore one of your other past passions in the future? Like ceramics and interior design…(perhaps make classes on skillshare or other leaning platforms-More passive income!)
Thank you 😊 As of now, I don't really have interest in teaching others about those skills, beyond just sharing how I do it once in a while (I sometimes post photography videos on my other channel) ua-cam.com/channels/FPLTtIjOex_23jvGEUET8A.html but I never say never!
I love puzzles too. You'd probably like to watch Cracking the Cryptic on UA-cam. Mark and Simon are fun to watch and give you tips on solving sudoku puzzles.
Sarah, this was so interesting and I learnt so much about your practice and a little glimpse into you as a person was really lovely. I didn’t ask a question for this, however I have one now. I live in Australia and the light can be very intense, harsh even and I find the that I struggle with choosing a colour palette that works, it looks Okay, I think out there but it is often overly hued by the light and I actually can’t tell if it’s darker or lighter because the glare alters my perception of the colours. I mix my colours when I am outside and this is hard to get right. I wear specially made sunglasses but it’s still a problem. Have you found the glare a factor and does it change the intensity of what you are looking at particularly colour wise. If this a problem, how to you deal with it. I actually crave a slightly greyer day sometimes.
I'm sorry to ask a question about a video from a month ago but I really want to know your thoughts. I bought the etcher gouache brushes and love them. Would you recommend using these brushes for both gouache and watercolor? I don't want to carry two sets of brushes.
@@SarahBurnsStudio Thank you! I really appreciate your response. I was wondering from a technical standpoint if these preform as well as they do with gouache, with watercolor. I can lighten my plein air kit. 😄🎨💖
Are you most creative early in day or later in day? I do understand you have admin side of things but if you do that early on does that interfere with you creativity? Does it shroud or hinder your creative side?
It shifts throughout the year. During the summer I'm super energetic but uncreative in the morning. I workout, do errands, and admin type stuff. Then after lunch I feel really creative and start doing creative stuff until late.
cat fight!! and we are friends again lol i do my taxes in scotland, but would pay someone if I was back in canada (or get my sister to do it, why have an accountant in the family if you dont take advantage of it? lol)
Yea, I pay someone in the US too, but luckily I haven’t owed taxes there in 2 years because I pay taxes in UK (still have to submit papers though..ugh)
Ending months with less than $10 in your bank account isn't normal? ...well I guess I do live on the poverty line...here's hoping I can make use of student aid this year though...
It might be ‘normal’ for many people - but it is scary. Especially when you also have visa expenses and business tax and so much else, serious expenses that can’t be delayed 🥵
@@SarahBurnsStudio Boy, do I feel this...so much...no, but ending the month with around $10 in my account or less is the norm. Such is life on welfare. :/ (And before anybody tells me to "gEt A jOb", I have one. It's school. I'm a student.)
A video on finding interest in a boring scene would be really useful, I’m just outside London in the Thurrock countryside 🥱😴😵💫 I challenge anyone to find many interesting plein air subjects. I tend to go in for the detail but your help would be great 😊
When I am out painting and need to dispose of my paint water, I carry a zip bag with a couple of kitchen sponges, then just dump the water in there. It holds a lot, doesn't spill and I can rinse and dry them when I get home . Also this eliminates the extra weight of another bottle. Just something I have found that works for me. I have enjoyed this video!!
great idea!
That’s an amazing idea!
You'll never get to the "this is a finished painting worthy of a frame for someone to buy" stage without all those stepping stones (for me those live in the sketchbook usually)
In addition...some people keep photo albums.
I would definitely be interested in a video about painting in a "boring" location. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks, Sarah!
Sarah, thank you so much - for this video specifically and all the work you're sharing! I can't emphasise enough how much support it gives! I think your channel is one of the best YT discoveries for the last few months, it's such a nice and cozy place to hang out. Truly appreciate it. ❤
Aww thank you! That’s encouraging :)
You are excellent at photography. Your videography always amazes me. I love watching your views of Scotland. You are on another level of art, the stratosphere, my friend!
Many thanks!☺️
What a gift it is to have a passion that guides your life, and how beautifully you carry this gift, Sarah. You're a special being and I loved hearing how you have evolved in your life with this marvelous passion. Feeling really grateful that you're sharing it with us. 🙏❤🙏
Thank you, Sarah! I learn so much from you. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
My pleasure!
Thanks so much Roxanne ✌️😌✨
Thank you for taking the time to share this. Such thoughtful and creative wisdom. It is a joy and an inspiration to witness someone living their authentic life, and of course you made it so visually engaging too. Looking forward to your epic adventure along the coast and beyond!
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
If you get to know them, you see no one has a clue 😂
Ok maybe some do... but it ain't me!
Hi Sarah! Thanks for all the great info. I really loved Scotland as well. I live in Oregon and I find it similar. The cat intermissions are hilarious!
So thorough, specific and candid. I love your enthusiasm and personality. I am also impressed about your candor regarding anxiety and depression. I have followed you for two years and you have inspired me to try gouache and do more sketching.
I hate that for decades, mental health considered a taboo topic. It’s part of being human!
Really happy to inspire you :)
I learned so much from this Sarah! And I laughed a little bit when you said going plein air with other people is not about you but it's about them - that's sooo true
Heehee, I had learned that lesson long ago 😋
I'm so glad!
Hi Sarah,
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all these questions and pouring your heart out so honestly 💜
I'm going to treasure all these tips and try to resist the urge to quit my job and start painting 24/7 🤭
I hope I will be able to do the same coastal trail painting feat where I grew up in Italy (Puglia region, to be precise, look it up! it's gorgeous!)
You're my favourite artist to follow the journey of and every time I read something you wrote or watch a video from you the admiration grows stronger. Thank you for all you do!
It’s my dream to visit/paint in Italy!! I fantasise about travelling around there for a year in a studio-camper-van 😅 I couldn’t do that but still. Fun to dream.
@@SarahBurnsStudio absolutely! Never say never! (it can also be broken down like your Scotland coastal trail painting journey 😊)
I wish your business booms and blooms so you'll be able to make all your dreams come true! 💜🍀
So informative, thank you Sarah! Lovely getting to know you better. You are a doll❣️
Such an interesting conversation. Thank you for your honesty. PS the paintings are gorgeous!
Love seeing all the scenery. It makes me excited to explore my own local spots!
Aww that’s amazing, thank you! I’m so exciting you are on that journey ✨
Loved to hear your story and your joy in adventure and painting. Hope to make it to Scotland one day myself, my Mom was born there. Thank you!
Hiking is one ofvthe best therapys to do of you have burnout. Love you und your videos every time.
It really is!
Thanks for sharing some inspiration & insight into your thoughts, progress & process, & how your art journey has & is going. Always wonderful to spend time together.
Thanks for hanging out with me today 🙂
@@SarahBurnsStudio You’re welcome 😉💕
Hi Sara, this is a beautiful Q&A. Thank you so much for the lovely video.
Thanks for watching 😊
Hello Sarah,
your videos are a delight and really addictive. They make me wish to pack my painting gear and accompany you on your walks along the Scottish coastline.

Thank you so much!
Thank you for listening 😊
FILL YOUR CUP. Great takeaway. Thx. Enjoyed this post. Including the paintings and clips playing in background
Appreciate your tips on burn out and artist block. I so agree that we have to be well-rounded to be better productive. Hope your carpal tunnel gets better! May your cup always be full, Sarah! 😄
And have to comment on those kittens! They are ADORABLE 😻😻😻
Thank you!
Thanks a lot for making all your videos !
Thanks for sharing Sarah!💫
Dear Sarah,
I really liked the vertical split screen idea with this Q & A, where your videos of paintings were on the right too.
I watched a few of your videos recently, and said to my partner Patrick yesterday,
"Lets go West.......!
......I am inspired to explore nature, because this woman that I follow on her UA-cam channel is on a painting trip and hiking around Scotland."
So this is the second time I have said this to him about your channel, and my new motivation!
I feel it is our duty in Sydney in our mild and gorgeous Wintery, Springy weather with sunshine and blue skies where I felt the need to celebrate the weather, by being immersed in it, for all the people in the world, where a Summer, is still cool, and grey. We also have had floods with so much rain for months, and so it makes it even more of a reason to enjoy "a normal sunny Wintery day"
My partner repeats it back to me,
"So let me get this straight, you want to drive West, to somewhere for a long drive, so you can paint nature, because a woman in Scotland inspired you to travel, because that is what she does?"
(".....Well, yeah! ...... and we should do this for all the people in the Northern hemisphere who have bad Winters...and can't enjoy them outside"
My lovely partner is my carer, so he drives me places, helps me dress, brings me breakfast and delicious froffy crema lattes on our De Longhi machine, directly to my bed with my bamboo bed table, makes me crepes with real maple syrup and lemon, with a lovely proud Bonsoy coffee with froff 25mm higher than the cup itself.

PS: In my bed office,, but getting up now for a shower, and to do some more work in my Etchr A4, landscape, white linen...230gsm
PPS: Thank your inspiration, Sarah, for getting me up and out yesterday, from a great distance, and I enjoyed my 2nd page of nature journalling. (See John Muir Laws youtuber)
We drove to Auburn, Westly direction, and I took a sprig of Sydney Green wattle in bloom, to make a circle picture in the car. (Previously drawn a circle with a compass, so they are ready, and again thanks for this inspiration)
While we did picnic in the bush in a new place, with yummy takeaway Pakistan food, wrapped in pieces of thin freshly made warm bread and succulent spicy Chicken korma, cucumber and mint yoghurt, it was too cold for us weather wise, so we went and sat in the car. Meanwhile Patrick had a walk..while I happily sat with my yellow and green wattle on my lap and drew with my R & K sketch ink in olive, "Emma" in my EF green Pelikan fountain pen...
I finished the circle study at home yesterday, so today "I will look at it, and see if I can do another page today....."
PPPS: Endep 100mg per day, helps me for 5 things, eco anxiety, eco depression, motivation, sleep, and pain.
Weird!
Dear Sarah,
I would suggest that while you eat cows dairy, it affects you in hidden ways.
Add sourdough 48 hr, no yeast
or Helga's gluten free bread.
(asthma, gut issues, acne, ADD, ADHD, depression, mood swings, headaches, migraines, stomach pain after eating, fatigue, IBS to name a few!)
Take a photo of this, so you have it when you next shop!
You don't need to do all of these at once, but you will notice a difference in 2 days, pain will be gone!
(If not, then it is likely a medication which is the cause. So assess your medications, chat to your GP, about taking some off, particularly female hormones like the pill, implanon, IUD are really bad for us, that is a whole other story....)
Never sufffaaaa in agony, it stops us working as an artiste', it changes our choices of our tools that we hold, and that changes our time, and images, and places we can go.
I hope your new journey pain free, will be easy. If you do a week, great, if you do 3 months, even better.
With love and regards,
In kindred spirit

Brilliant Sarah, really interesting 🤩
Thankyou Sarah for another great video ❤
I’ve ruined many brushes over the years! It’s so sad when I wake up and see the brush is rock solid from acrylics 😭
Pivooot!!!! You're such a cutie! 🤣 And I LOVE your paintings ♥
Thank you! I’ve learned so much from you!
The pivot clips just make me giggle. I think of Ross every time I hear or say that word. Hahaha. Next time you do q and a, how are you hiking the entire coast? Drive somewhere, hike, remember where you leave off, and start there next?
I'll explain that in EP 02 :) ua-cam.com/channels/FPLTtIjOex_23jvGEUET8A.html
Thank you for making the videos you make. I love them and everything you share with us.❤
Thank you so much x
Wonderful video!
I really like your content, thank you!
For people in the US, the Small Business Administration has lots of resources for new and emerging small businesses-classes, videos, templates etc. that could be helpful for that side of of a creative life...
Thank you Sarah! Amazing video I learned so much!
God bless!!
Thank you so much. This was a wonderful video.
Thanks for sharing this video.
That’s the spirit! Go for it!
Found this video so very helpful and inspiring. Thank you so sharing so much of yourself and your artistic path.

Great video 💖💖💖
TY 💙 Getting to know you is a delight
Thank you.
Seems like a lot of people might find that interesting, I will work on that :)
Thanks for this! Very inspirational. I would love to see a video with strategies and techniques on how to best approach un-ideal weather conditions - overcast/ low tonal or hue variations etc. :D
Good idea - that happens quite often actually.

Not sure if my vocal chords are cut out for doing an audio book 🤣 it takes me a whole day to “recover” after recording a video
Thank you for sharing so much of your story - very encouraging :-]
Thanks for watching!
Wonderful video, and take the leap and buy a home. Thanks
We are still learning about which area we want to live in more permanently - it’s good to rent while you get used to an area, because each part of Scotland can vary a lot. Plus I have to wait until I get my visa and live here for x amount of years in order to qualify for a mortgage / co-sign
Enjoyed this so much! Can you add this question to your next list? What are your favorite watercolor colors and guache colors. What is on your pallet?
I’m working on some palette videos soon :)
@@SarahBurnsStudio yay!!! That will be fun! I'm in need of some new colors and I always love seeing what works for everyone else.
Thank you, and I am sorry to hear of your pain 💙
When you went into your origin story 😆, I would’ve really liked to hear something about your parents.
There are so many people out there who would’ve loved to become artists but their parents were actively, or violently, discouraging them from making art. In my case, in addition to a whole bunch of other abusive behavior, my mother would rip up my paintings or smash any sculptures she found because she wanted me to “get a real job“.
So I would’ve loved to hear something about how your parents took the news that you wanted to be an artist. Were they supportive? More importantly, were they financially supportive? ;-)
How much were you debating becoming an artist versus getting a job that is seen as more stable and secure?
Thank you for the suggestion!
This is the exact problem I talked/demonstrated in my recent video on taking color notes outside. It’s so challenging!
@@SarahBurnsStudio Thank you Sarah, I will go back and look at it again. I do get really messed up by this colour thing. 😊.
Hi Sarah, I love the sketch you did of the mountain in black ink at about 58 minutes. Did. You just fill a waterPen with black ink- magic?!
Yes it's slightly diluted fountain pen ink in my Pentel brush pen :)
@@SarahBurnsStudio thanks, finally the perfect use for a water brush!🤣👌
I'm sorry to ask a question about a video from a month ago but I really want to know your thoughts. I bought the etcher gouache brushes and love them. Would you recommend using these brushes for both gouache and watercolor? I don't want to carry two sets of brushes.
Yes of course! Labels don’t mean anything. The only thing that matters is “does this brush allow me to do what I want?”
@@SarahBurnsStudio Thank you! I really appreciate your response. I was wondering from a technical standpoint if these preform as well as they do with gouache, with watercolor. I can lighten my plein air kit. 😄🎨💖
My sister in law lives in Glasgow all the way from England and both my family have ancestors from Aberdeen I want to check it out.
Is there a difference between clove bud, and just clove oil?
Clove bud essential oil has much higher levels of eugenol, so you need less of it
Have you tried the new Daniel Smith Gouache?
No
cat fight!! and we are friends again lol
i do my taxes in scotland, but would pay someone if I was back in canada (or get my sister to do it, why have an accountant in the family if you dont take advantage of it?
(And before anybody tells me to "gEt A jOb", I have one. It's school. I'm a student.)
i feel like there's something that's given you a spin... found your legs yet??
That remains to be seen 🤣
my problem is the world. politics and the climate make it seem like there isn't a point anymore.
Some things are unavoidable, but we can create a life we enjoy despite all the shit in the world
A video on finding interest in a boring scene would be really useful, I’m just outside London in the Thurrock countryside 🥱😴😵💫 I challenge anyone to find many interesting plein air subjects. I tend to go in for the detail but your help would be great 😊
Challenge accepted!
