Back when I worked in the industry before UEFI, this was a major issue. May be better now but back then never under any circumstances should you risk updating your BIOS from within windows as the chances of failure where HIGH, even if the system did not loose power. I must have removed 100+ bios chips from motherboards and manually reprogramed them. We always recommended that BIOS updates were done via a MS dos boot disk, or by entering the BIOS utility before windows starts. 20 years later and Windows update is still bricking systems, when will MS ever learn.

Sadly this isn't always possible. Some hardware vendors (especially for older computers) would only allow updating the BIOS via a Windows setup file. I had to switch a friend's old laptop that originally came with Windows 7 from Linux back to Windows just to update its BIOS. There was no other option. Luckily the BIOS update went OK.

BIOS's do not need to be updated, most machines go thru their entire life without being updated, Microsoft should stop this immediately, the potential for harm is there, - just like their auto enabling of Bitlocker. Please disable this "feature" Microsoft !

Any computer I have seen for quite a while now shows these firmware updates in the optional drivers list which can only be accessed by doing a manual Windows update, they are not automatically installed. Even on the last computer I built for a customer a few months ago. BIOS updates are not to keep Windows happy they are to make sure the hardware is working at its best. Do not forget there are a lot of people running other OSes. Maybe things are different in the UK. Cheers from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada!

@@gorddearmond7134 I have seen lately that BIOS updates are being included in the "general" windows update process, yes I wish it was optional too. I can see a situation where an end user see's a BIOS update in progress and force stops it because it's something they've never seen before and think it's something untoward. Most of the laptop has BIOS flashback/rollback disabled out of the factory. Once my sister's ThinkPad got it the same issue and it reverted back to old BIOS. ThinkPad BIOS update has now changed instead of installing it does a hot reload from System32/firmware.
So for full proper update we still need to run actual ThinkPad update through Vantage or Lenovo system update or drivers page for complete flash

This is interesting as I've always updated the BIOS on my LENOVO LEGION laptop via the LENOVO VANTAGE app that's built into the Windows OS. However, I cannot remember that last time I've seen it to where the BIOS update was included with the regular updates. Usually, it's in the optional area that's under the main updates section. However, I've always been skeptical about WINDOWS sending out BIOS and driver updates for my computers. The best way to get updates whether it's BIOS or DRIVE updates is to just go to the manufacturer's website and download the software from there.Good warning video, Britec.

In fact I had this exact situation about 2 months ago when my Asus Vivobook suddenly lost internet connections. I did all of the things I could think of and that included deleting the wifi card with no success on reboot. So I had to take it to a techie who found it was an Asus update that somehow prevented the laptop from functioning as it should. He fixed the issue but it remains that Microsoft had caused me to shell out money for a fix - pretty sick eh? I am going to fix that now in my gpedit so thanks again👍

Thank you very much for the Group Editor tweak. I have had TWO such automatic updates to my bios (I have a Samsung Galaxy Book4 i7-1355U/16/512/IPS 15,6). This irritated me because I want to be able to decide myself, and because I only bought this computer in August. My heart was in my throat while the BIOS firmware updated, but thankfully on both occasions everything did go well.
However, I must tell you that removing the firmware from the "My computer Device Manager" is not foolproof. My previous computer HP Victus had an unexpected BIOS update, and I did exactly the procedure you show in your video. HOWEVER, after a bigger Windows Update (one of the major version updates) this setting was RE-ENABLED when the latest version of Windows was installed.
I have Windows 11 Pro on both machines.
Thank you for this very useful video!

This GPE policy is essential in preventing Windows Update from also downloading and installing Microsoft own version of AMD Adrenalin graphic drivers. Even if you start by downloading the video drivers directly from AMD, Windows Update (without this policy enabled) will then install their own version of AMD Adrenalin which will prevent Adrenalin from functioning altogether. So stupid, counterintuitive and completely ridiculous. Especially so when Windows Update doesn't have a simple toggle option to exclude driver updates, and we need to use GPE.

Great content that majority of tech content creators have been missing. And thanks a lot for pointing out this update disaster causing great anxiety at least for me. Since Nadella came out as the CEO, which was about 10 years ago, Microsoft has started a war against their users and they committed their whole effort to disallow users from any comfortable computing experience since Windows 10. They left no control to user *unlike* Windows 7/Vista/XP.
Also, Windows 10/11 Home users are hopeless as none of methods work unless you have Pro or higher. Also, HP is the first devil company that first started to rolling out BIOS updates through Windows which is too risky. Worse, they left user no option to disable that behaviour in UI while forcibly doing that. Awful.
I still do not understand why Nadella and Microsoft board had no mercy on their users to provide happy computing environment by leaving no any control. We are geeks and power users knowing what thing is good or bad, so MS, please let us decide it. Thanks for the awareness!

Most of the BIOS update packages will refuse to install if the laptop isn't plugged in to its charger and there is at least 50% battery charge. I'm speaking of the standalone packages, such as those downloaded from the computer's manufacturer's web site. I don't know if the packages from Windows Update bypass this check or not.
Another way around this is that when there's a BIOS update, uncheck it in Windows Update and go to the manufacturer's web site to download and install it. Once you've done that, there's no longer a need for the one from Windows Update. Even if you can't get rid of it (although there are ways to force that), if it tries to install, it should simply see that it's not needed and will silently abort the install.

MS should at least do something to make this process safer like make the user aware a BIOS update is taking place as a Windows update. Or at least make the user aware with a pop up not to shutdown if the user tries shutting down the computer as a BIOS update is taking place. But really, i don't think they should be doing it via Windows update at all. It's both the BIOS supplier and MS fault here for enabling the problem.

I think it usually warns the user to not turn off the device during these updates otherwise it could cause serious issues. If they cannot guarantee a continuous power supply, they have an option to decline or delay the update. Turning it off makes the user vulnerable to malware or other exploits if they forget to check for updates regularly and install them on their terms. There was a serious UEFI vulnerability this year but a June patch helped to fix it, which happened before I learned about the vulnerability. Most users won't learn about any as they usually don't follow computing channels or other sources. But they may have found this particular video and without broader awareness they will turn the updates off and - forget about it, at their detriment in the future. Those updates are there for a reason.

    • @horseathalt7308

Critical updates (security updates) should always be allowed to install unless you hear of a serious issue and in that case you block them....Those "quality" updates are not security related and you can block them with no worries at all.

Though laptop is running well, 2 problems I noticed are the windows updates so far only security intelligence ones fail and it won't re-try if clicked. Further the widget on task bar don't open when mouse hovers over it. If I restart the pc the widgets and windows updates work and flush through ok but after a boot from shutdown the issue comes back. Wondering if this bios update messed this up straight from new out of box update?

For some reason (possibly the recovery disk being the wrong version, it became stuck on a Bit Locker screen on Win 11 Home which does not have Bit Locker!

Does this, also include updates for PC/Desktop? Last week, I started my PC, & Windows auto/started an update then, automatically went to a restart/reset/re-install. The PC was working fine the night before. The mesage was, "do not turn off your PC" with no option to stop or change the process. This lost most of my files/apps/programs, including my MS Office 2019. Fortunately most of my filies etc. were on my "E" drive. But..., When windows finished, upon restart, all I got was a black screen with no ability to get into the bios. The PC was running with no image on the screen and unresponsive. I've had something similar happen when windows was doing an auto update in the background while I was also updating my graphics drivers. My solution to that, (after much troubleshooting), was to replace my boot drive & re-install windows.

Never update bios from any OS, maybe except FreeDos and proper DOS update, if there is critical update, do it manually, download bios and update it from bios directly. Good example was when MSI Dragon Center (now known as just MSI Center) decided ti brick my MSI B450 Tomahawk Max bios, but luckily there is bios usb recovery, so I was just scared for a half an hour... Luckily I have another pc and usb flash drive, so I was ok... But I heard many stories, when antivirus blocks updating from Windows OS, or just windows update application just didn't worked correctly...
