I met him when I was 27 years old, at an appliance store, watching an NCAA Tournament game. He was gracious and open, and fun to talk to. Over the years, we run into each other at different places many times, and he'd always reference that day we met. I'm in my mid-60s now, and last saw him 3 years ago, in a tobacconist shop. As I was leaving, I said hello to him. He mentioned my gray hair and salt-and-pepper beard, cracking was getting old now 🙂, but knew who I was because of my face and voice. He told his cigar buddies that he never forgot how respectful I'd been to him the day we first me, over 30 years prior. I think the world of Mr. Robertson. One of my original sports heroes, who became a great acquaintance. I am a regular man, with no particular notoriety, yet, he always treated me like a nephew he was always glad to see. THAT's the Oscar Robertson I got to know, as a person. A really good man.
Been watching basketball for more than 60 years. The Big O is still the best player I've ever seen. He could do everything at the highest level when there was no palming, no double pivot foot, no drop step (jumping twice in one possession), no extra steps to the hoop. He is still the only player in NBA history to score 2000 pts, make 600 FTs & pass for 600 assists in each of his 1st 7 seasons. He is also the only player in NBA history to finish his career (14yrs) with averages of at least 7.0 FG/G, 7.0 FT/G, 7.0 Reb/G & 7.0 As/G. He was a great defensive player too. In his final season, which was the 1st year the NBA tracked steals, at age 35 he made 77 steals in 70 games. To put that in pespective, consider that Joe Dumas topped 77 steals in a season just 4 times during his entire career.
He did it without having the centers and PF block out so he could get the rebounds. Without shooting 30% so he could make the points. I respect his triple doubles.
Oscar Robertson was always my favorite saw him play in person at Cleveland arena with my father. Was in at. To me he was the greatest player of all time during his years with the Royals and winning a Championship with the Bucks. Mr. triple double.
People look at me crazy for saying i got big o at nr2 at the guard spot but for impact on and off the court hes number 1 for me im just 20 years old but still i rather studie Big O than Curry
Oscar Robertson definitely in the top 5 best players to ever play I have Wilt Chamberlain above him but I have Oscar above MJ, LeBron, & Kobe Wilt Oscar MJ LeBron Dr J My top 5.
Take lebron off an Jordan is 1. Sorry but he is. No player in NBA History has accomplished what he has in the time frame he did. Where's Magic & Bird? WOW! Big O should be ahead of Wilt as well. Wilt for his size underwhelmed often especially in the playoffs. Wilt should have more titles than he does. All those 50 point 30 rebound games etc it amounted to 2 titles. Oscar Robertson was a better cleaner shorter version of lebron James by the way.
OSCAR WAS MY BOY. BUT I WOULD NT. WANT TO PLAY WITH HIM. LOVED TO PLAY AGAINST HIM! ALL THAT YELLING HE DID I COULDNT TAKE!! AND WOULD NT TAKE. BUT HE WAS WITH ELGIN BAYLOR MY FAVORITE PLAYER.
@@fwily2580 You call this poor basketball? 😂 But today players complain an you can't handcheck an there's no hard fouls that's great basketball to you? 😂
Great for his time, a time when well the NBA was let's say not as athletic.. Might have had a much harder time in the 80s and 90s when the league was at its strongest talent wise. Just my opinion.
Might even had it easier without having to deal with outright racism and prejudice. Most of us. YOU. Couldn't deal with and perform on high level like wilt Russell Kareem big o. 50s 60s being a black man playing a white man sport
@@craigmabry1392 Words only hurt those weak enough to allow it.. The players you spoke of rose above it, but fact is the 60's was just a much less athletic era.. Wilt and Kareem could play in any era at the highest of levels, Russell and Oscar maybe yes maybe no.
