Excellent interview with one of the greatest players of all-time. The Big O was extremely quick but he was measured and efficient. If you gave him a 20 footer, he wanted a 15 footer or better. Oscar was so strong and could back you down or he'd face up, take a 2 or 3 dribbles and shoot it in your face. Of course, The Big O could score on anybody but could also get his teammates involved. If his team needed a stop and a big rebound he could get that too. In that era dunking and fancy dribbling was considered showboating and his game reflected that but don't make the mistake of thinking he couldn't do it because he could. Oscar Robertson would be a superstar in any era, that's how good he was.
I watched Oscar play his last few years. Completely unique player that revolutionized guard play. I copied his jumper so I could shoot from behind my head too. I scored a ton of points because of it. I wasn’t just a fan, he was so dominant I was a student of his. People can compare eras but those are just people that probably didn’t see him play live. What a beautiful game he had. Man’s man on the court. Super strong. Smooth as shit. A real pleasure to learn from.

being a white kid in the fifties we lived three blocks from O and a pretty good baller my brother took me to a crispus attucks game where i saw Oscar.. i saw O play with the Bearcats then the Royals...point being before all now he invented triple doubles as smooth as a hot knife thru butter...the best of the best..nuff said
Oscar Robertson has to be considered the benchmark for all basketball players both as an athlete and person. I was fortunate to grow up in Cincinnati and play basketball in the era in which he played. My brother and I diligently tried to emulate his shooting style not only because of his accuracy but because of his shooting form and style. In addition and most importantly, Oscar was and is a good role model!
Jerry West could do the same thing scoring wise and passing. Was more known for defense than Oscar. But Oscar was the greatest rebounding PG of that time.

It was a pure joy to hear Oscar Robertson answer the questions and share some of the experiences of his amazing career - and life experiences during that era. I feel so blessed to have come of age in the sixties - falling in love with the game, getting to watch and study all of the great ones - doing their thing , the way they did it. Webber is a bit of a nervous twitchy guy but he is really great in interviews. He is just himself and manages to put people at ease. They just know he's a good guy and are willing to chat in an ope an way. Nice to see you doing well Webb, you had some tough knocks in your career. Like Jalen said, they never would have made the finals without you.
Well done Cweb! The Big O was one of my favs growing up, especially when he and Kareem were in the finals against Boston. I began that series cheering for Kareem. By the end, I was in awe of Oscar. The Celtics tried full court pressure to tire him out. He never lost his legs and kept flicking those J''s! O ran that team and fed Dandridge and Lucius Allen cutting. Great player, great man. I think C-Webb's ability as an interviewer is extremely underrated. I hope he has more opportunities to formally sit down and share his discussions with other legends of the game

I'm seeing this for the first time. I'm like a father watching his son interviewing his grandfather. I can't help but smile thinking about Chris at Michigan and that heart breaking moment to watch him now in this interview. That and watching Big O now and remembering him when I was a kid. I didn't realize then what I watching with him and Lew Alcindor were killin' the game back then. Man! In the words of Ice Cube, "Today was a good day!"

He paved the way for players today through the reserve clause case as well as set the standard for what a great all around player is. I wish we can hear more from this legend. It's like he's almost forgotten these days. Would also loved to see a John Havlicek interview but unfortunately he's no longer with us.
Nice to see Oscar mellow out in his later years. Guy was an amazing full tool player, but he had a major chip on his shoulder for years - never putting other great players over. Probably from not getting his just respects compared to other legends. But it's championships that make you immortal to most.
At 3:40, Big O mentions Kelly Coleman of Kentucky. I had never heard of him, so had to look him up. Kelly Coleman finished his HS career by scoring 4263 points in 127 games for a 33.6ppg average in his 4-year career at Wayland HS. During the 1955-56 season, he ave 46.8ppg. 6'3"" 210lb at 18 years old. He was the first Kentucky Mr Basketball in '56. He played college ball for Kentucky Wesleyan, and in his three seasons he averaged 27.7ppg. He was picked 11th overall in the 1960 NBA draft by the Knicks, but he had no interest in the NBA due to the low pay. Incredible!.
+ddenuci When "King" Kelly Coleman was matched against Big O in the Indiana-Kentucky HS all-star games (they played two), Oscar scored 34 and 41 points while holding Kelly to 17 in the first game and only 4 points in the second game on 1-for-9 shooting. Indiana won both games.

As a kid born in 1952 in Indianapolis, unlike my older sisters, I was too young to attend any of the Crispus Attucks High School games during the 1950s, but my dad made it a point to take me to the rare NBA game at the Fairgrounds Coliseum whenever Oscar and the Cincinnati Royals came to town.
Love the big O a complete game didn't see him when he was young but I talked to guys that had. When you talk about guy and could he play today he would be better today.Great vertical powerful man fast and range on his shot. He was a master of putting a guy on his hip ridding him to the hoop.

What a fantastic interview. Mr. Robertson was my favorite player growing up. I have always bragged about him even though I know he was to humble and classy to hoot his own horn. Mr. Webber is also full of class and did a great interview. I wish more young people would look at previous generations of experience in all walks of life and gain something positive from them instead of dismissing them as old and clueless. I read a comment where these players held back, athletically. True. Oscar mentioned the Globetrotters and "clowns". Too bad there aren't more film video of Ruckers Park, where many of these legends let loose their athletic abilities ; playing above the rim. These players from the Golden era, in my opinion, would beat any best assembled NBA team of today.

You understand and gain knowledge, very few interviewers in America if you listen always speaking over each other and this was really nice and real class from Mr Webber, respect to the legend also being interviewed 🤔💭🙌🙌💯🏀👍.
Some of the greatest things that Oscar did off the court are never talked about. Being from Indiana, I will always be grateful for him bringing Roger Brown to the Indiana Pacers. Roger got into some problems when he was young and was banned from competition. Oscar went out of his way to get him into the pros. Oscar knew he was an excellent talented ball player that deserved a chance. Oscar talked the owner of the Pacers in the old ABA to give him a shot. Roger became an all star and a hall of famer. Oscar isn't only one of the best players to ever play, but one of the best humans to play the game. Thanks Big O for making my childhood that much better. You were always my favorite.
C-Webb is one of a small handful of individuals who could interview The Big O and do it justice. I've been very impressed with C Webb, and I'm sure Oscar was after this interview also.

Oscar was one of the great young players in NBA History, the first player I saw really looking smart and methodical on the court, or in complete control I might say. And I can still only say that about a few players. He was an aggressive player, I don't think he put as much effort in as a few other players that have played in the NBA, but no one was more involved in an offense I don't think, because he would want to be the orchestrator of all the offense, more positive than negative, because like I've hard him say he was all pro 10 times, who else should handle the ball. He was an underrated defensive player, he played on the ball, he didn't go for steals, he would stay with his man, this can be better a lot of the time. I think Elgin is the reason I don't rate Bill Russell very highly, despite being from New England and a Boston Celtics fan from 1953-present day. He would take it to Russell in the paint all the time, and scored 61 vs the Celtics in 62'. He would outplay Russell.
It's a reason bill Russell won every time. Elgin took too many bad shots similar to Kobe. Russell was a team player and Elgin didn't play a winning style but it looked good in the game and in the stats but not the results. Russell get it done
John bishop In game 6 Russell had a triple double and Elgin blew a 16 point lead in the third quarter at home. Choked game 7 while Russell had 30/40 and god knows how many blocks

Tiny Archibald led the league in both assists and scoring in 1973 I believe. An amazing accomplishment.

+ddenuci When "King" Kelly Coleman was matched against Big O in the Indiana-Kentucky HS all-star games (they played two), Oscar scored 34 and 41 points while holding Kelly to 17 in the first game and only 4 points in the second game on 1-for-9 shooting. Indiana won both games.

This was awesome. O was the best as were others. Chris was great and most of all ,well informed and humble.what is going on now cannot be compared to what went on in the past. Jordon was great, Wilt was great, O was great, and yes Baylor was great and so was Earl the Pearl. There is room for everybody. When you’ve seen them all, you understand how great they ALL were. When you’ve only seen some you only know that which you have seen.
Don't leave our Jerry West. The best 2 way guard I ever saw and I saw him many many times.

Chris, very engaging interview of one of the greatest players and pioneers of the game. As a kid born in 1952 in Indianapolis, unlike my older sisters, I was too young to attend any of the Crispus Attucks High School games during the 1950s, but my dad made it a point to take me to the rare NBA game at the Fairgrounds Coliseum whenever Oscar and the Cincinnati Royals came to town.
Love the big O a complete game didn't see him when he was young but I talked to guys that had.
When you talk about guy and could he play today he would be better today.Great vertical powerful man fast and range on his shot.
He was a master of putting a guy on his hip ridding him to the hoop.

What a fantastic interview. Mr. Robertson was my favorite player growing up. I have always bragged about him even though I know he was to humble and classy to hoot his own horn. Mr. Webber is also full of class and did a great interview. I wish more young people would look at previous generations of experience in all walks of life and gain something positive from them instead of dismissing them as old and clueless. Chris Webber could be a very good interviewer as a professional in my opinion.

Too bad there aren't more film video of Ruckers Park, where many of these legends let loose their athletic abilities ; playing above the rim.
These players from the Golden era, in my opinion, would beat any best assembled NBA team of today.
First time seeing this and well said concerning Mr Webber and great interview 4real, most people hear to respond, but when you listen? You understand and gain knowledge, very few interviewers in America if you listen always speaking over each other and this was really nice and real class from Mr Webber, respect to the legend also being interviewed 🤔💭🙌🙌💯🏀👍.
Some of the greatest things that Oscar did off the court are never talked about. Being from Indiana, I will always be grateful for him bringing Roger Brown to the Indiana Pacers. Roger got into some problems when he was young and was banned from competition. Oscar went out of his way to get him into the pros. Oscar knew he was an excellent talented ball player that deserved a chance. Oscar talked the owner of the Pacers in the old ABA to give him a shot. Roger became an all star and a hall of famer. Oscar isn't only one of the best players to ever play, but one of the best humans to play the game. Thanks Big O for making my childhood that much better. You were always my favorite.

Oscar was one of the great young players in NBA History, the first player I saw really looking smart and methodical on the court, or in complete control I might say. And I can still only say that about a few players.
He was an aggressive player, I don't think he put as much effort in as a few other players that have played in the NBA, but no one was more involved in an offense I don't think, because he would want to be the orchestrator of all the offense, more positive than negative, because like I've hard him say he was all pro 10 times, who else should handle the ball. He was an underrated defensive player, he played on the ball, he didn't go for steals, he would stay with his man, this can be better a lot of the time.
I think Elgin is the reason I don't rate Bill Russell very highly, despite being from New England and a Boston Celtics fan from 1953-present day. He would take it to Russell in the paint all the time, and scored 61 vs the Celtics in 62'. He would outplay Russell.
Really interesting to compare OR to modern players. Very different, but no one can say he wasn't great and couldn't hold to modern NBA.

It's a reason bill Russell won every time. Elgin took too many bad shots similar to Kobe. Russell was a team player and Elgin didn't play a winning style but it looked good in the game and in the stats but not the results. Russell get it done
John bishop In game 6 Russell had a triple double and Elgin blew a 16 point lead in the third quarter at home. Choked game 7 while Russell had 30/40 and god knows how many blocks

Chris Webber is quite an impressive interviewer. He has great technique and asks great questions with few words and gets out of the way all the while himself staying engaged with the subject. He's fantastic. Great player, great person, great interviewer, and his natural personality is outstanding.
Chris Webber impresses me more and more. ... This was a great interview and you can tell that the Big O was quite impressed by C-Webb's knowledge of his game. I learned a lot myself!
