Wow all the hate in the comments for one of the most memorable, most unique scenarios ever made. 😂 Red doesnt even do anything and yellow is hardstuck in stone age just there for you to convert. I loved all of Voice of Babylon, truly a classic.
@@DCdabest The only thing hard about aoe 1 was that the akkadians attacked your priest. In aoe 2 the akkadians are passive but the Sumerians bum rush you, when you convert 2 villagers they already go to tool age, you have to play perfect
That mostly because the de 1 version broke the A.i on this mission as on most difficulties they will send out their villagers to Gank the priest the very second it performs the conversion. They only reframe from doings if you play it on the hardest difficulty alone as otherwise this mission is unplayable without cheats.
In the original the yellow guys would actually attack your priest after a while so you had to be sneaky with your conversions. Red would also age up and attack you pretty quickly so you had to move very quickly to avoid getting spanked by their troops.
They used to attack before a patch. I hate this, still can't finish on hardest. I'm talking about patches after 2023, it went from relaxing to the hghest stake campaign in the game
I love the cinematic opening with the lion hunting the gazelles, the red axemen walking away from a burning house, and the storks flying over the river. All while the ominous Babylonian theme plays... Great job by the devs!
I don't know what the devs did to this scenario but it is way easier in this than in the original CD game. Both of those pale in comparison to the version in AoE1 DE (or at least in the game build I played it on). I recall having to restart the mission several times because the AI would rush your priest and sometimes it would die before the conversion completed. Also as soon as the AI found a building (your TC for instance) they would come at you non-stop. I got lucky once where neither AI found me early on and I was able to stone wall the river and kill Yellow without red causing trouble. In the AoE2 DE version these AI seem... docile.
I like this one. It felt really novel at the time, and there aren't many scenarios where you can just run around a stone age/tool age civ with a priest. The old campaigns were significantly more chill, partly because they didn't have their niche figured out, partially because the PCs at the time couldn't necessarily handle bigger scenarios with higher pop limits. At least that's my view
When I first played this I had the APM of a sloth, spent copious amount of time waiting for resources because I would put no more than 6 vils on food, turtled for an eternity against a seldom attacking cpu and didn't even know wtf was an rts. Being used to always start with a tc, that's why this scenario was so memorable back then, because of this neat idea of building up from a single priest stealing all the enemy units when we were just figuring out the game (or in my case the rts genre). You don't get what is so exciting? Well duh, 25 years of iteration in way more complex AoE2 (and so on) scenarios tend to do that. But this one is a certified hood classic.
Converting red first, if it works, is fun. But on hard all the axemen came to find you and also knew where you were if you stood still. So you have to be sneaky and heal/block etc
I remember this mission being harder in the original and DE. As I remember Red starts in tool age, or if not they upgrade real fast. Then they go up to bronze age soon and starts attacking you with chariots. It was pretty important to wall off that river crossing. Also, shore fishing is the fastest, but you rarely do it. Then hunting, then foraging/farming. But considering walking distance, hunting is probably ends up as slowest anyway.
The most memorable start of a mission ever, isn't it? (at least for its time). 1st mission of Hittite campaign also has the same start, but with 2 priests. Missions 5, 6 and 8 of this campaign will be the most interesting, probably
I may be wrong, but I think this was part of the showcase demo that came with Windows 98? Along with the Hittite level where you move your army from right to left, cross the river and then attack the citadel...sort of like the castle level in William Wallace in AoE2. If that's the case then that would explain the connection. Keep up the great work Ornlu!
Fishing is the fastest, followed by hunting. Foraging and farming is only slightly below hunting, and this is only since Definitive Edition before which hunting was on the same level as the latter two.
This one was one of the most tedious beginning scenarios I've ever played. But I got through it thanks to building my city at the beginning of the level and tower spamming next to red. Not the best intro scenario I played, but not the worst.
Yes walling off at the starting area until you reach Bronze Age is a safe way. In the original yellow will also build military I think eventually and also red and yellow are allied.
I don't know what the devs did here but the old school holy man scenario was way harder, you would get attacked left and right if you tried to convert anything, and your enemies would level up real quick and attack.
This is my favorite campaign mission in all of AoE 1 and I was a bit disappointed at how easy it was in here cause I remember it being fairly hard as well, just like others described it the AI seems way more passive, I guess it is to appeal more to the casual players even if you play it on Hard mode. But I guess that is true for all the campaigns they added so far, I think the new ones which were added with the DLC were harder than the ones they keep porting over.
I must be misremembering but i felt like this mission was easy back when i was hs. You rushed out axe men to destroy yellows military builds and kept their tc alive while you converted all of their vils while booming at home. Then you just clean up red. But everyone else struggled with it.
This level was a nightmare in the original CD version of the game. Looks like it was extremely toned down. You really need to give a try on OG AoE 1, for nasty challenges.
I hated this mission in the original and definitiv edition. So hard not to get stomped by the Summerians, they easily converted half your army while the atrocious pathfinding kept your units from reaching their priests and there wasnt much gold on the map.
Wtf!!! I dont have 3 hours to try for 10 times to start this mission. Every time in 6 or 8 minutes red will attack my village and destory. What am i doing wrong?
Lamo, I remember playing this level and kept dying to the lion. Peak level design.

Definitely convinced a lot of the audience never played AoE1 haha
This shit is classic
The quest exists in AoEO aswell :DD ua-cam.com/video/TJkcOpsd1Lk/v-deo.html

What do you mean?!?!?!? I convert anyone, max range, everyone is on my ass

Shoutout to all the gigachads who converted red first

I have seen glaciers move faster than that monk 💀

It's much harder in AOE1. The villagers will actively hunt and attack your priest in AOE1 if you start converting, so you had to be very tactical.
Ornlu the Holy Wolf.
Is that a Power Wolf reference?

Ah, so much nostalgia. This was the demo scenario for the original AOE (back when games had demos)
This was definitely a unique scenario. I don't think we have a scenario like this in AOE2.
the barbarossa campaing is fairly similar
Barbarossa 3, and to anextent Bayinnaung 3
Honestly, given how painful this mission was in AOE1DE, I'd probably have gone Bronze Age anyway and thrown strong units at them as a sort of revenge.
My trick for this one is just converting Red first. It never failed me even in hard difficulties.
In AoE1 berries gather the fastest followed by fish. Hunt and Farming gather the same rate unless they changed it for the DLC
Fishing is the fastest, followed by hunting. Foraging and farming is only slightly below hunting, and this is only since Definitive Edition before which hunting was on the same level as the latter two.

Yes you're right. How could I forget the fish boom meta has been around since the very very beginning
Hoyohoyo makes the priest go fast and recharge faster.

oof I played that when i was ~6. I remeber it looking even better :P

You just make a base to the north and the enemy never attack you
Voices of Babylon in general was a brutal campaign, never got through it without cheating lol

Is there a scenario where you manage to keep your monk safe? 😂
You are going to Love the 5th Babylon Szenario. Or Not. Maybe I just suck. I thought it to be quite annoying.
I hated this mission in the original and definitiv edition. So hard not to get stomped by the Summerians, they easily converted half your army while the atrocious pathfinding kept your units from reaching their priests and there wasnt much gold on the map.
I wonder if you can beat this mission by going to red first
My memory must be bad cause og AoE wasn’t as hard as people are making it out to be to me.
Is the archery building actually suppose to be the bronze age model?
iirc in og aoe yellow built a military too
Ayoyo wolololo
Why is this on Hard so much easier than mine on Moderate? Where are the chariot archers?
Wtf!!! I dont have 3 hours to try for 10 times to start this mission. Every time in 6 or 8 minutes red will attack my village and destory. What am i doing wrong?
Also the towers used to have way more armour
I found all the old campaigns really...underwhelming and frankly not enjoyable.
