In this video managing editor Jerry Audet highlights a few skinny soft-plastics he's been using over the last few years (since some are newly introduced) and very briefly describes what he feels are the strengths and weaknesses of each. He also briefly discusses mistakes anglers make while using them.

I really like the Bass Kandy Delights. I use them for Largemouth Bass in Southern California. They're easy to modify due to the angled texture lines and relatively deeper hook slot. The salt water plastic they use can also be stretched to soften them up, while still being resilient. they've got a great swimming action and tail kick for a straight tail eel shape.

The problems with big lures are hook coverage and air resistance.
You can use hook coverage to help select larger fish because smaller ones wont hook-up, but you get to a certain size and it is absolutely diminishing returns.

Love the slugo, good information on the differences. Recently got the gt eel was fishing it like sluggo with no success. I'd love to hear and see the video on how to fish plastics like an eel or different situations.

I use the Hoggy, i have used the Jerk type and what i did to compensate for a jig is use a Bullet weight of 1/2 - 1 1/2oz. and it produces very well. Yes all all know Jigs are it but i was curious and being curious sometimes works. Peace

How do you carry these? Just jam them in between your plugs?

I find this recent promotion of soft eels interesting. Not being a live bait guy, but wanting to experience the benefit of eels as bait, I have been throwing pre-rigged Hogys, jighead, weedless Hogys, Al Gags eels, etc. for a few seasons now and have never had any luck. I'm down for the new info. and another shot at it though ...

Try the albie snax 9” fish snax. It’s the best casting unweighted soft plastic I’ve ever used, it can be retrieved and rigged in many ways (I prefer a BKK 10/0 titan swimbait hook, or a Gravity tackle 1 oz screwlock jig head, but any would work)

@@andynonymous2164 No problem man. There’s certainly a time and place for these type of big plastics. I was present for what had to be a biomass of squid in the hundreds of thousands push through the canal and hot on their asses were big striper. They wouldn’t touch anyone’s offerings as they were so keyed in on squid. I found a 14” hogy stuffed in the bottom of my plug bag and this was the result.

No problem. Although I feel it’s a different class of plastic than what Jerry is talking about, it’s certainly another pitch you can throw

I know this is a soft plastic video but I would like to ask a reel question what size reel 4500 or 5500 would equal a van staal VR 150

12/0 imo - if you’re referring to the BKK titan swimbait hook.

Use senko style 5 or 7 inch size. Way cheaper, casts better and farther, works way better!

Never give anybody advice on striper fishing ever again unless you somehow found a way to attach two or three of them together to make a ~15-20” bait in which case I’m all ears.
If you throw a 5-7” bait to 40lb bass eating 20” weakfish why would they ever even look at it???

@@kamarte I wasn’t trying to be polite- in fact I need to be rude when somebody spouts some absolutely idiotic advice in the comments of what is otherwise a useful video.
“Use a 5-7” senko instead of a 13 inch gt eel when surf fishing for stripers” is top 5 dumbest things I’ve ever ever heard in my life. I’ve caught 16 fish over 40 inches in one night throwing original Hogy 14 inch plastics. Never has any seasoned surf veteran recommended senkos for stripers before, so you just think you can come on here and lie to the audience of SCJ without being called out? You shouldn’t be allowed to even watch these videos. Or did you accidentally drop a comment here when you thought this was a video about fishing for perch and crappie?
I’ll say it one more time- don’t ever give advice about surf fishing stripers ever again

The comment button…..you should not click it or perhaps read a comprehensive guide on how to not be a condescending moron in the comments section and maybe just be respectful with your input. I try to be helpful when I can so if you need any help, feel free to ask.
