Thank you! Bought this a little while ago and could not find a video anywhere to explain the mechanics even though I understood the concept. Good work.
Man I really REALLY wanted to like this filter. But all the complaints in the reviews about the cpl and nd rotation happening at the same time and it being very difficult to dial one in without adjusting the other were true for me as well. Eventually after so much frustration I had to return it, hoping that it hey can refine the design a bit more for a v2. Outside of that glaring design issue, I found it to be of very high quality.
@@Z3Chosen1 I personally like it. If you’re on the fence, I’d say try it and return it if you end up not liking it. For the videos I make, it’s been a helpful piece of kit, and I haven’t minded the rotational issue… but it is one to consider
Would you recommend this for an amateur photographer who does primarily macro/woodland work, but would really like to try some long exposure stuff with seascapes and waterfalls?
Would I… hmm… maybe. It would depend for me how much I want to keep my aperture down so I can isolate the subject. Macro it probably wouldn’t help much, bc you’re really needing more light with macro not less. For other things it could help lowering the over powering sunlight so you don’t have to run your shutter speed to 1/1000 all the time if you’re running into that and would like to slow it back to something more “normal”. The added CPL though would be nice to take the shine off things like leaves/grass/ water… I’d say if any of these have been the things that you’ve noticed and wanted to fix in your images then yeah try one and see if you like it… if not maybe your having issues with something you might need a different tool for
I’ll add to that as well since I read your waterfall piece also… if that’s something you’re interested in then yeah you’ll want one to slow the subject with a low shutter speed.. bc you can really only push the aperture so high and maybe you want to keep a foreground background element in focus/out of focus so f22 may not be what you want… and if it’s film you get 1 ISO and if it’s digital again you can only go to ISO 100 typically so if you’re needing it slow enough to make the water look like a curtain and need to hold the shutter up for like a couple seconds or something you’ll need a way to dim the ambient light (sun light), so you can run a decent f8 or so aperture and a 4 second shutter speed at iso 100… The numbers are arbitrary bc it’ll change with circumstances but hopefully you get the point
@@patcormick Ok, thanks for the reply! Sorry if this is a silly question but can you completely turn down the ND filter or is it always active? If not then it’s probably just better to buy them separate as although the CPL and ND would work well for seascapes though for the macro stuff the ND would definitely just make my life harder.
@ no silly questions here my guy… the ND will always be “on” to some degree once screwed on… its like ND 2 or something like that at the bottom… think sunglasses that transition, except you control the amount they transition too and they’re always at least tinted a little bit… if you’re working macro I can’t imagine you’d need an ND of any kind… when I do macro I’m trying to burst flash everything to be able to use a decent aperture… but for the other things you mentioned if you’re looking into that kind of stuff it might be something to check out if you’re working you’re way into it
@@patcormick Alright thanks again for the reply. I’d say I’ll just go for a standalone variable ND because that opens up a completely new realm of photography for me whereas the CPL would just enhance certain areas. And in that case would you recommend the K&F 10 stop variable ND?
Hi! I use an iPhone 15 Pro with a Polar Pro CPL filter. I do a lot of travel vlogs and I do a lot of landscape shots. In such situations, would you say an VND filter or a CPL filter is more suitable?
Solid question. I’d say the VND is necessary and the CPL can be a good addition. If you’re making videos outside, you gotta have the ND so you can cover the 180 degree rule, for proper motion blur. On the photo side the CPL may help you a bit more so you can take down the bright sky and make it more of a punchy blue. But you could also run the ND if you like to throw in other shots with your landscapes that need subject isolation via lower apertures… hope this helps!
I discovered K&F recently and got some of their black mist diffusion filters (1/8 and 1/4 strength). They are multi-coated and of really good quality. I can highly recommend them. Have bought a CPL this week but not tested yet. Next is the VND for video.
Hi Pat,thank you for this great video.I do mostly indoor product video shooting and outdoor travel filming with my sony apsc camera, I'm wondering which is better for me , CPL+ND2-32 or CPL+ND4-64?
I don’t think there would be a huge difference on that one.. that basically 1 stop difference… with one starting a bit more intense than the other and then ending a bit stronger on the back end as well.. I’d probably go for the slightly stronger one. But either would probably be mostly fine… if you’re in crazy bright situations all the time you could always look for a 2nd filter that’s stronger for those particular times
@@patcormick Thank you for the advise, you've inspired me. I'm planning to buy an ND2-32 first as my primary filter, and I'll get an ND32-1000 later on for use in extremely bright conditions.
So I’ve never used one. But just from a quick search it looks like a line of filters and a magnetic adapter..? If that’s right it may work if both sides of the filter are threaded to allow you to stack.
