Dan, Thank you for putting this together! What a cool bass, and a great demonstration of what these Nordstrand pickups actually sound like! We at Best Bass Gear will be sending a lot folks over to have a watch and listen. You play like a boss!
Killer bass. Every tone was musical. Great job dude!
MichaelUhler stay tuned... In the process of getting the finish on the neck and body for my second build!
Sound test video to follow once we’re fully operational. Thanks for the interest!
Hi Dan! Frankie here from Best Bass Gear. This is killer! You did a great job with the build, and with your choice of materials and components, the bass looks and sounds amazing! I have already watched this a few times, and have it playing while I'm working, really great playing, great job! Thank you!
Dan, fantastic job on the build and your demo is excellent. Great diversity in tones. Awesome bass chops! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Bass sounds amazing and your playing as well
Fantastic playing and tone!
Really nice alder body, at first sight I thought it was swamp ash. Good pickups too, thanks for the video.
sounds nice, reminds me of the Gibson Grabber G3 in its philosophy
nice playing and very cool bass!
Excellent video, thank you sir. This answers some questions that I had about the zen blades. P.S. sweet ax!
dirty69ization thanks for checking out the video. Hope it was helpful to some degree. My first attempt at piecing together a bass that I dreamt up...The blade series (big blades/ bigblade man / zen blades) are awesome pickups...highly recommend them. Can cover a lot of ground musically with these.
Jeez you made me rethink about my next bass 😂 love the tone possibilities, and it looks gorgeous too 👌🏻
iTzSparjack it was a great experience building this instrument ..it has a very familiar vintage “broke in “ feel. The “hot rodded “ electronics give it some crazy versatility which can mimic a lot of different basses pretty close sound wise but also carries a bunch of very unique tones that I’ve never experienced before. Awesome inspiration for writing new grooves! ..If you’re thinking about doing a build of your own... I highly recommend it!!
Thanks for the info! Did you order the body with no pickup routed or just added a third pickup in the middld?
Ordered it with the neck and bridge already in and added the middle after the fact because I like my tone options lol
Love the bass! Sounds excellent, and the build quality looks terrific! I've been using Nordstrand pickups for some time, and I think they are some of the best there is. I've done very limited building using Warmoth - mostly USACG. However, my next build is going to be a rear-routed jazz with a Nordstrand NP4-A in the neck and Bigman in the bridge. It will be a passive bass. I plan on using Warmoth for the body and neck.
Chris Wenkle ...thanks for checking out out the build! Your upcoming build sounds like a winner! You won’t be disappointed with Warmoth. Excellent quality! I’m in the beginning stages of my second build...stay tuned for another sound test video.
Sounds just about perfect id have to say
You helped me make a decision on Zen Blades for my bass. A lot of EMG sized options out there, but these are great.
Any of the blade series from Nordstrand are killer. You’ll enjoy them.
I have the power blade in another bass. Surprised how much louder it is. How does the output of this one stack up with others?
They have solid output. They can be in your face if you want but can also be toned back with some eq and right hand technique adjustments .
Great sounds, great playing! Are your zen blades wired in parallel or series?
The zen blades are wired in series then into the toggle acting as a three way selector for the bridge and middle pickup selections. Thanks for the interest
That sounds amazing. How did you get it routed for all three pickups? Warmoth's builder only lets you choose two.
Thanks for the kind words. First time putting a bass together...my weird idea worked out thankfully lol...I had Warmoth do the bridge and neck and I routed in the middle position. Warmoth may be able to help you if you call in and speak to someone in person... not 100% on that.
Excellent demo Dan! I am considering these PUP's vs The Big Split any thoughts?
Thanks for the kind words. I’ve had both of these models of pickups in different basses. You can’t really go wrong with either in my opinion. The blades have a “more in your face “ or aggressive type attitude to them. The splits have a bit of that going on too but are smoother while still having great clarity across all the frequencies. Hope that helps.
Actually a great video. Which goes a bit contrary to Nordstrands own site where they have this blog about combining pickups from different sets/type. And not really recommending it. However, I see that Big BladeMan comes in either MM shells or EMG shells and not Bartolini shells (with 3 screws), but what shape/shell design is your Big BladeMan? It isn't MM for sure one can see, but I can't see if it's "Bart" shape or "EMG" shape. AFAIK BigBladeMan is their only Music Man pickup that can be ordered in a EMG shell too.
But I may be wrong.
They can make the Big BladeMan's cover that way if you ask. I noticed the same cover on one of Andy Irvine's basses.
The Big Blademan is two J-Blades in an MM shell. The one you see here is one of the various 5-string MusicMan pickup shapes
That’s correct..MM5 without ears.. standard 5 string music man size off of Nordstrands site. Yes , it’s an odd combo of pickups but it works great for me. Tons of variations..
I keep coming back to this video... ended up with Zen Blades and Big Blademan in two separate basses because of your demo. Curious to know what preamp you are using in this bass?
Truth be told… it’s Bartolini three band with push/pull mid frequency selection. Everything was set flat for this demo.
Those inner coils together tho!
Right!?! This bass is waaaay too much fun in the tone department!
How is the switching set up between the 3 pickups ?
Stewr306 thanks for the interest...the controls are as follows:
Concentric volume:
Top of knob is volume for the neck big blademan with the front switch for series/ parallel / single selection for that pickup.
Bottom of volume knob is for the bridge and middle pickups with the switch more torwards the bridge acting as a three way selector for bridge , bridge+middle, or just middle.
Have two mid frequencies with a push pull selector for the middle knob.
Knob closest to bridge is Concentric stacked bass and treble control.
Once you get used to the controls , it’s a pretty sweet setup.
