The Queen Who Died To Give Birth To A Prince | Jane Seymour | Henry VIII's Third Wife

  • Not very much is known about Jane Seymour, and yet she was the most successful, in many ways, of Henry VIII's wives. She stayed queen - admittedly only for less than two years, thanks to her untimely death - gave Henry the prince he wanted, reinstated Mary to her father's favour, and raised her own family's status. This video looks at the surprisingly steely, sharp woman beneath history's stereotype of the victimised, submissive woman Jane is often painted as, and how she contributed to her own position...

Henry reminding Jane of what had happened to the previous queen who meddled in his affairs is an admission that he knew Anne was innocent of the charges against her.

From 1536 till 1543 (I think it was 1543 when he passed the Act of Succession but it could be 1544, I can’t remember) she wasn’t in the line of succession, she was declared a bastard after her mother died and was never re legitimised despite being added to the Succession after Edward and Mary

Ah yes, Jane Seymour. The Queen, who gave birth to the golden Prince and then had the decency and intelligence to die before Henry, would've inevitably outgrew her. It's harsh but true.

Agreed! It disgusts me personally when I had married, younger, divorced, polygamist guys or worse perverts hit on me. Moreover, my parents even tried the same trick as Catherine of Aragon did and set me up with younger guys than myself, but I knew that I wanted only one genuine/biological, never-married, unmarried, never had any children, loving, and faithful older man to marry for the rest of my life. In spite of waiting for 27 years, temptations, even sexual assault by depraved perverts who tried to rape me, and my own parents and others shaming and mocking me for refusing them all - I finally found that man in my husband. I’ll never forget my Dad’s words prior “If you ever find a man you want and who wants some woman like you, I will eat my hat”. Well, my husband and I are on our fourth wedding anniversary now and my parents reluctantly admitted their error. It’s a shame none of these women had the resilience and determination as I did and their tragedy is a terrible warning and life lesson for other single women to avoid the same traps they did.

How on earth do you mentally and emotionally assent to get engaged to a man who had his wife murdered publicly the day before and then get married a few days after that? Jane is always portrayed as such a meek, mild, gentle soul who wouldn’t say boo to a ghost, but to be willing to get engaged and married with such callous and indecent haste shows that Jane was willing to do anything to marry Henry and elevate her family.

My own feeling is that once Henry set his lustful eye upon a woman [girl], there was nothing that would stop him from getting her. No one was going to truthfully stand up to him and say "no," so any woman [girl] that was caught in that trap went along with it. What could she really do?
Even Anne sent back Henry's gifts a number of times... but that made him want her more. She wouldn't settle to be a mistress after what he did to her sister, but she gambled with bigger stakes... and in the end, she lost her head. Jane [Anne's cousin] learned from her mistakes and went along, married, and gave him a son.....Then promptly died before he could tire if her. What if he had made her pregnant again, and it was a girl...he might have given up on her then and moved on to another girl/woman.
Henry was very fickle, but to him, he could be because he was KING.

this video proved so many points which I wasn't sure were right, but I am now.
everyone says Jane Seymour was the only wife he really loved and kept her memory alive and...but I kinda see things differently. since we all know the kind of type Henry VIII had on appearance of women, he couldn't exactly get attracted to Jane normally (I can swear that every other wife of him, were much more attractive than Jane) but at that time, and since with the fall out he had with Anne, Jane was like exactly what he needed at the time. an obedient quite and gentle woman who's on facial features was the opposite of Anne. and we all know how even after Anne's execution, how much Henry tried to erase her and didn't let anything remind him of her (for whatever reason) so psychologically, of course in that time, Jane was his best choice. but as you point out, all of those fiery passion he had for her, were gone after their marriage was consummated. and afterwards, he didn't let Jane even slightest interference, we can say he didn't even allow her to speak, and acted that much controlling towards her once she was pregnant, didn't even crown her as queen! although it's true that he did mourn for her, but let's not forget that she was the only wife who had given him a son and died before she could annoy him, and we in short amount of time, saw that she also had potential to push him away. and I like to think that mourning deeply part and wanting to be buried beside her and all the affection he had, were mostly because of finally having an heir thanks to her, or the guilt he felt about the way he treated her, or because he thought he was getting punished by losing her, because of what he did to Catherine and Anne and his two other daughters. but as I said, before I'm certain that Jane wasn't his greatest love. since he started losing it after he was separated from Catherine and literally killed a part of himself by doing that.

I agree with you, I think - as you say - it was a physical attraction for many of Henry's wives, but Jane probably wasn't. (Although, I suppose we don't know!) With Jane it definitely seems to have been more of a love based on her personality.

    • @HistorysForgottenPeople
      @HistorysForgottenPeople  2 місяці тому +7

      Hmm....*taps chin*
It's a complicated one, but my answer is no, I don't think so. Firstly, looking at the time of actual events around George and Anne's executions, there really isn't any evidence of Jane being involved, except for her being mentioned once in the trial, when George was asked if Anne had mentioned Henry's supposed infertility problems to Jane. There's not much about Jane's relationship with Anne either, which for the period, usually suggests they got along well, but weren't BFFs. In fact, there's evidence around 1534 that Jane helped Anne banish an unknown mistress of Henry's from court, and she was in turn sent from court for a short while.
Later on, long after Anne and George were dead, and after Jane's own death, THEN we started to see more 'evidence' of her supposed part in bringing them down. George Wyatt was seeking to rehabilitate Anne's character for his biography of her, and in the context of what happened with Katherine Howard, Jane was an easy target. After that point, it was easy for historians wishing to create a bit of drama to follow the same line of thinking.
I'm definitely going to do a video for her once all the wives are done, I think she deserves to be rehabilitated herself! 😊

I think in a way one reason Henry might’ve been attracted to Jane was because (in his mind, her quiet and gentle personality) reminded him of his mother, Elizabeth of York. But I don’t think Jane wasn’t an innocent or pure angel (just like Anne Boleyn is perceived as a temptress or femme fatale), we tend to have this perception of Jane as a good person when it wasn’t the case. But at the same time, Jane wasn’t well treated as Henry literally threatened with death for speaking out against him so no one was neither good or bad

    • @HistorysForgottenPeople

I think you're spot on - Jane knew how to play the game even better than Anne, and knew exactly how to present herself to Henry's liking for what he wanted in a _wife_ , not just a sexy mistress. Obviously none of Henry's wives were treated well, but I do think it says a lot that Jane didn't even seem to blink when her predecessor was put to death just days before her own marriage.

I actually like Jane! She gets much more bad rep than Anne- while Anne has been cast as the “feminist icon” (with which I heartily disagree), Jane is the “boring one” who took “girboss Anne” from her husband and throne. But, to be honest, I think what Jane did wasn’t worst than what Anne did- Jane most likely didn’t know Anne would be executed, and once she was, she had no choice but to marry Henry. She did exactly what Anne did to try and get Henry, except Jane didn’t mistreat her stepchildren. I honestly don’t see Jane being as nasty to Anne as Anne had been to Katherine.
Jane wasn’t a saint, she took Anne from Henry just as Anne had taken Katherine from him, but their behaviour towards others was very different. She clearly wanted the throne, but I am pretty sure she didn’t know Anne would die because of it.

she only stood up for Mary while letting little Elizabeth (which if we're being honest, turned orphan the moment Anne died) be neglected and abused. that's not called being on good terms with her stepchildren

Basically, Jane acted like Catherine to get Henry. That's why some folks say Jane was Catherine's karma to Anne. It makes perfect sense! 🤷🏽‍♀️

I feel bad for Anne. I dont like that mad. How can you look at a women you "loved" and want to see them leave this world. No matter how much the angered you. Like.... wasnt it strange to him that this person could have still been alive had he not killed her. She didnt deserve it that day. Nor did his teenage wife.

Yeah, it is VERY hard to make a good argument for Henry VIII being a good person in any capacity.

and imagine afterwards, he wanted all traces of her, every portrait and anything that reminds him of her be gone! even Elizabeth! why? why didn't he want to be reminded of her? because of feeling guilt which I doubt? because he didn't want tot remember the life he destroyed himself? because he still had feelings for her that he didn't want to give power to, again? just why? do you have theories?
