Water is refreshing, hydrating, and invaluable to your survival. But clean water remains a precious and often scarce commodity - there are nearly 800 million people who still don’t have regular access to it. Why is that? And how can you tell whether the water you have access to - whether from a tap or otherwise - is drinkable? Mia Nacamulli examines water contamination and treatment.

Never in my life have I worried about drinking tap water. It might seem like something quite obvious, but not everyone can say the same. It is amazing how so many things that we feel are a "given" are actually things to be grateful for.

Our kidneys do not "clean water". They clean our blood by processing toxic metabolic substances. They have plenty to do even if the water we drink is clean :)

This is a good simplifying of the water treatment process. It works well as an introduction to water purification, but if you want to pursue wastewater treatment there are a few more things you should know:
-Before any treatment, a grinder mashes physical material like toilet paper or diapers, rendering them smaller and subject to treatment.
-Sedimentation often occurs in two steps: *aeration,* when operators use an acid, base, and microorganisms to turn dissolved ions in water into gas and inject air to remove the gases. Sludge settles as sediment, and *clarification,* removes the sludge from the water. At my local sewage plant, aeration and clarification occur in two stages.
-Wastewater operators take water samples at various times during the day and conduct tests on them in a lab. Operators look to see how long sludge takes to settle--clarification should take longer than aeration. Conditions of the samples reflect what's happening in the tank.
-Some plants benefit from a *microfiltration* station, which catches microscopic material that sedimentation and filtration couldn't catch. Microfiltration has immense cleaning ability, but these machines are rare--my local plant has one, and it cost over a million dollars to build.
-Chlorine and ozone aren't the only ways to disinfect water. UV disinfection uses ultraviolet light to kill microorganism in treated water. All UV disinfection requires are some UV rods and a source of energy.

There are also quicktests for microbiological quality (semi-quantitative for CFU). But you are always safer to test water samples in an accredited laboratory for drinking water!

First of all, Trump hasn't even finished his first year as president. Second of all, Obama was faced with s fslling economy, but did bring it back up to what what it was before, if not better than, he achieved presidency. And third of all, look at his cabinet. Look at the fact he is already asking for money for his second campaign. Look at everything he has said about Hillary, about anyone who doesn't like him.

Lol I got an ad for this video about knowing how clean ur water is for real.

  •  7 років тому +317

Kinda weird to say but if everyone had clean drinking water, that would be a HUGE overpopulation danger.

Bence Illes yes and no. As I see it, everyone having access to drinkable water would mean every place on earth is developed, at least to a point where a decent level of quality of life exists so people would have the act of procreation as a lower priority

    •  7 років тому +16

That's true indeed. But some places in Africa they have good quality water, and yet the population growth hasn't declined. Clean drinking water doesn't always bring development on other fields. :/

Personally I’d love rain water collected with containers made of a little bit of made magma (such as by melting pieces of stones or rock) and/ or in combination with twig wood and any tree leaves maybe if possible and maybe even turning that into carbonated or mineral water that comes to our tap (pipe of which is ideally made of glass maybe)

I remember one of the common survival tips being drinking from running water. I wonder if it's actually safe to drink, or just safe compared too the other options.

    • @Jabberwockybird
      @Jabberwockybird 2 роки тому +1

I think that running water gets rid of one danger. Becuase stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, you should never drink stagnant. But I don't think that would prevent other dangers. If the water is downstream from a poluted source or if it has those parasites.

My favorite way that past peoples have "purified" water was using it to make beer. Seriously. The alcohol would kill off most of the harmful microorganisms making it safer to drink than many water sources.

A special straw that uses an advanced filter membrane to convert contaminated water into drinkable water.

Although not the answer for all situations, part of the reason for many people not having safe water is the corruption of politicians or the decision of some nations to spend their money on vanity projects.

I dont drink water that much because :
    1. "fridge water" is too cold
    2. "tap water" tastes horrible (atleast from my sinks)

Well where I live the water is actually pretty good. But then we heard about the lead. It's about 10 feet of our water supply coming into the house. So spring water, and a big Pur water filter on the kitchen sink solved that issue.
