    My interpretation of her being elated is that when she stole that ring she wasn't thinking about God or his punishment and she felt like she was uniquely evil. Seeing what was done by Askeladd's men she realized that not only is she not alone as a sinner but they are people who are MUCH more evil than her.

    • @fellowdegenerate1518
      @fellowdegenerate1518 Місяць тому +2

      I interpreted it this way as well. The elation was because she received closure in believing that there are greater evils. And I believe this to be also a realization that she believes she can be redeemed. That she can perhaps do something to kind of absolve her sin of stealing.

    No matter how much you like a character they show how real it was back then. No one is good. Or evil.

    The Viking ethos is that if you die in battle, you go to Valhalla where people will feast and fight for all eternity, everyone else goes to Helheim, a dark and cold place.

    The 1000 years after the ressurection belief is extra-biblical, but was a common belief at the time the story is set.

    Askellad es un heroe tragico, para algunos un heroe, para otros un monstruo. La verdad es que es de los mejores personajes de la obra.

    Hey! love your analysis and how much you get into certain ideas, but I hope pausing too much doesn't take away from specific emotional beats as I feel like some of the flow of the scene may be lost. At the end it's up to you, just considering what you're missing out on by not letting a moment wash over you. I'm glad you loved such introspective episodes~!

    This is one of the most visually beautiful episodes of the series, and a lot of it has to do with its direction. In the manga, there are a lot of quotes taken from several of the viking sagas spread out throughout the manga. They started incorporating that element more often after this episode.

    The 10 Commandments are actions. Dont Steal, Dont Murder etc.
    The Seven Deadly Sins are more like motivations. Lust, Envy, Greed etc.
    So stealing is a sin, as its breaching the commandments, its not a deadly sin in and of itself. The greed that lead her to steal the ring would be the deadly (or cardinal) sin.

    12:50 In spanish the word is offend. "Forgive our offenses just as we forgive those who offend us". Apparently the most accurate translation is indeed debtors, as the original greek word used 'opheilema' means debt.

    • @rmg480
      @rmg480 Місяць тому

      P.S. It's important to point out that this might not necessarily mean monetary debt, and may be figuratively interpreted as owing someone for something you did to them, even if money was not involved.

    I interpreted Anne saying she felt elated as a feeling of a little relief after she witnessed people performing acts far more evil than what she did, thus making them far greater sinners than her. This made her feel that maybe her sin isn't as bad and maybe her punishment from God wouldn't be as bad as theirs. Remember she was in the moment of feeling guilty and questioning her sin when everything happened. When you weigh the sin of stealing a small metal ring verse brutally murdering 50 human lives, it is not even comparable. It was also more than 50 lives, they counted 2 children as 1 adult.

    42:50 I think the argument at the time and for the scene is that Earth is Hell since humanity was banished from Eden. Since she remains on this world with monsters and devils, she rationalizes her family was called to heaven but she, as a sinner, has to keep staying in hell.
    Do remember the modern concept of Heaven and Hell won't be a widespread thing for at least 300 more years.

    "People who say they want to live in these times, this is what you get."
    Depending on your luck, really. There were plenty of people who lived and died knowing only peace. You can be born today into similar situations; it's all relative.

    From what I remember of it that I learned in school here in the uk: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
    The idea is basically the same though.
    You talk about metaphor and the bible a lot and I don’t think you’re wrong but at the same time I think that’s also not completely correct, these people whether old or young fundamentally believed that god and the devil were actually real, they really did believe, just as they believed in giants and fairies, I don’t doubt that you believe in a different way but here it’s not just because she’s a child.

    04:45 Jehova is the name of one of the gods of Judaism. It's also often written as Yahweh. When Judaism ditched polytheism, Jehova/Yahweh was the one remaining god, which was later inherited by the Nazorean sect that became somewhat obsessed with a particular version of Joshua (which means "savior") in the heavens. That sect was later known as Christian, and the central figure was retroactively written as if he were an actual human on earth, rather than the celestial figure he started out as. Much later, Islam also adopted the monotheistic take of Judaism and Christianity, but didn't adopt the god's name, instead just calling it "the god" (i.e. Allah).
    The Hebrew name for Jesus is Yeshua. The more Latinized version is Joshua.

    21:02 i don't think this is something from the Bible (as far as I'm aware)
    The verses i remember about it say the opposite:
    "The Day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night."
    "Of that day and hour no-one knows, not even the angels in heaven or the Son, only the Father."

    In Christianity, God judges people at the end of their lives. Righteous according to their deeds and evil according to there’s. However, on earth, there is no “you get what you give out.” That’s more karma found in Easter religions than Christianity. In the Bible it talks about how the strong lose battles, the wise go hungry, and young people die too early, “vanity of vanities.” That’s why evil people live longer and are richer than good people much of the time, it’s just the trial of life.
    Fun fact, in the next season they quote from the book of Ecclesiastes too.
