They haven't been anything even remotely close to death metal since the mid 90s. Akerfeldt does harsh vocals but music wise they've never been very death metal except certain sections on the first 3 albums.

The guitar solo at the very end of this track, although short, to me is one of the best and greatest guitar solo ever performed. There is so much tension in it, makes me feel like I’m trapped at the core of a violent rising tornado that flips me over helplessly until I fall into the heart of a volcano. Absolutely amazing, in just a few seconds. I never get tired of listening to that part.. BRAVO Fredrick !!
Oh, Opeth, how you have changed during all these years. Yet for me, this feels as one of your deepest albums. As a true fan, I hope that you will continue your journey wherever it leads you, and I will follow. Becasue I know that, no matter what, you are only capable of masterpieces. Either strong and mesmerizing or deep and haunting.
Have to say this album is definitely growing on me, especially after seeing it performed live. Mike's definitely got some balls to do this. Big respect for Opeth. Art is selfish, that's the way it has to be. When you cater to your fan base it's no longer art...
I promise you won't regret buying a single one of their albums. Even the ones that take the longest to grow on you, like Orchid for example, are totally awesome and WELL worth the money spent for a physical copy.

They always put out great music. They new album is is phenomenal too. These guys are like a modern day heavy Metal ELP or even Rush. They have consistently pushed the boundaries of music every album. So well written, the guitars are some of the best in music the keys are like a through back too the early prog rock days. They have down it all Progresses Metal Rock, jazz, Blues even tons of classical component. They have been around fonr a long time. they need to keep it fresh. They inspire me to want to jam out again. Just listening to them makes me a better drummer & song writer. Hope they are around as long as possible.
This is one of those albums that really grows on you with time. It was hard to really get into at first after years of extreme metal, but playing this now, I'm in awe.
So many state their thoughts as fact. This album is better than that album. These vocals are not as cool as those vocals. There's no comparison, this guitar riff can't match up to that guitar riff. Blue is better than red, obviously. Yellow is worse than green. Come on, just either enjoy the music, or enjoy some other kind of music you like. Someone liking something that you don't like doesn't make what they like "bad" and doesn't make them stupid or have bad taste. To imply otherwise is ignorance wrapped in arrogance. Can we not appreciate both prog and brutal crushing metal?
Such an incredible masterpiece. The emotional impact of this music is difficult to describe. I honestly can't conceive of how anyone could write this. Opeth is the greatest band to ever walk this earth. I'll probably keep saying this till the end
Fact is, both sides of this endless Opeth debate are fucking idiotic. Those who like Heritage and PM call anyone who disagrees "moronic metalheads", while the metalheads call the other side "pretentious" or "fanboys who will buy anything with the Opeth name on it". Heritage is probably my least favorite album, and it's still fucking fantastic. But, I have to say, the best starting albums are probably Damnation, Blackwater Park, and Ghost Reveries. My personal favorites are My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park, but every album they've ever made is a fucking immortal classic.

Zaret he's right. Yeah, i give you the fact that Peter co-write the entirity of Morningrise, the darkest album by Opeth to this day but Fredrik is just a more complete musician than Peter. Opeth really helped me get into technical death metal \w/ Been a fan of there's for like six or so years. They are amazing live! Saw them when they came over to Melbourne in May 2015.
I just started listening to Opeth. This album is entertaining, but honestly it feels like they should have changed the band's name for it, because it sounds so different. It is like Deep Purple, and Yes had a baby.
as an Opeth fan of 5 years back (I'm 19), this album is only a natural evolution of their sound; I LOVE death metal and it's awesome when the play songs such as When and Blackwater Park live, but this album sounds truly like them and it's extremely awesome, we as fans should not be so judgmental about this.
It is closer to the old stuff but, in my opinion, I did not like Heritage as much as I liked Pale Communion or Sorceress. I still listen from time to time but idk...
I don't think I'm much of a fan of PC, but I love Heritage and what I've heard from Sorceress so far (haven't gotten around to listening to the whole thing yet). I just think it's interesting to see just how much they've changed. When Heritage came out everybody flipped out because of how different it sounded, but I think it sounds more like what came before than what came after.

I'm a massive Opeth newbie but i think this is great! Shows how talented the band are knowing they can go from death metal style to this and still sound great. Very few musicians can cover genres like Opeth.
Does anyone else just get some kind of magical feeling when listening to this song and the overall album Heritage? I can't compare it to anything, never mind anything Opeth have done before, but this is the case with pretty much every album. But there is just... something... about this album that really grabs me and refreshes me from all the other music around and I feel anew when I hear this and let it flow through me (it literally feels as if it is for me). Mikael Akerfeldt truly is a genius.
All these years later, remembering this album got the level of hate it took it's sad. Everything about it is pure musical geniality. Since it came out, when i was around 9 or 10 y/o i just loved it. Now that my ear grown up i can appreciate in a less naive way and really pay attention to those prog rock and jazzy influences that seems to flourish from this record. I tend to genre hop a lot in music, but in metal Opeth is always the band where i come back again and again.
Wasn't a fan of this album when I first got it the day it dropped in stores. It's slowly growing on me. As much as I love the "classic" Opeth sound, this material is still awesome. Truly progressive mindset. Love it.

I'm a massive Opeth newbie but i think this is great! Shows how talented the band are knowing they can go from death metal style to this and still sound great. Very few musicians can cover genres like Opeth.

Does anyone else just get some kind of magical feeling when listening to this song and the overall album Heritage? I can't compare it to anything, never mind anything Opeth have done before, but this is the case with pretty much every album. But there is just... something... about this album that really grabs me and refreshes me from all the other music around and I feel anew when I hear this and let it flow through me (it literally feels as if it is for me). Mikael Akerfeldt truly is a genius.
I'm so glad to see ROADRUNNER carries my two FAVORITE BANDS!!!11!!

All these years later, remembering this album got the level of hate it took it's sad. Everything about it is pure musical geniality. Since it came out, when i was around 9 or 10 y/o i just loved it.
Now that my ear grown up i can appreciate in a less naive way and really pay attention to those prog rock and jazzy influences that seems to flourish from this record. I tend to genre hop a lot in music, but in metal Opeth is always the band where i come back again and again.
This drummer is a beast.

Wasn't a fan of this album when I first got it the day it dropped in stores. It's slowly growing on me. As much as I love the "classic" Opeth sound, this material is still awesome. Truly progressive mindset. Love it.
My introduction to Opeth was Still Life..I still remember how i felt when i listened to The Moor for the first time.. *drool*
