- In this video we discuss the history of the Rolex Daytona in Platinum.
The platinum Daytona has been a seriously popular watch ever since it was released back in 2013. The platinum Daytona was released to celebrate 50 years since the Daytona's inception back in 1963.
The watch world was rife with speculations and rumours that Rolex would release a steel version with a ceramic bezel as a call back to the 6263 Daytona all those years ago.
However, Rolex Surprised us and did not disappoint.with the release of the Platinum Daytona. This watch come with Rolex's stunning ice blue dial which is typically reserved for their platinum pieces. I think the ice blue on the Platinum Daytona works the best due to its contrast with the chestnut brown ceramic bezel, the bezel is also reserved exclusively for this watch.
Although the Platinum Daytona could be considered understated, this is one of my favourite things about the watch, the stealth wealth aspect; those in the know will realise due to the bezel and dial what a serious & heavy piece you have. It is a head turner & conversation starter for watch enthusiasts worldwide. I remember when I first held one & the sheer weight of this platinum piece shocked me, even though it is a heavy piece on the wrist you do not notice the weight as it wears beautifully and is so comfortable.

The Platinum Daytona with the Baguette cut diamond dial, I would say is the watch of the moment, something has happened in the last year with the platinum Daytona, and more so this watch in particular. It has just gone crazy!!
It’s a pretty hard watch to get right now, and the price of a new one has risen by 20K since Christmas when they were retailing for about £80,000 now this watch is £100,000. This represents an increase on 25% in just 3 months, and this is in a secure investment piece, this isn’t something that can lose those gains overnight. Theres a limited supply of these models, the scarcity and popularity add to its phenomenal pricing.

If I recall, it was not a hot model upon release in 2013. It traded at a discount and ADs had a hard time moving them and offered them at steep discounts. That all changed in the last 3 years, especially the last 1.5 years.

I saw this watch at an AD in Canada back in 2014. Its retail price was then $72,000 CAD. Within three years it was retailing for $98,000 CAD. I saw a used model in Toronto recently for $47,000 CAD.
Just goes to prove how good of an investment these watches are!

The diamond platinum Daytona was introduced in 2015, two years after the regular 116506.
Thats one I passed at MSRP and now its very hard to get for MSRP.
could you get a sub black ceramic sub for retail? It's been my grail watch I've worked hard to find it but haven't pulled the trigger until i can afford a new one.

The Watch Guys have one and I think he weighed it around 290g. A Day Date 40 is around 265g and my 116719BLRO was 221g white Gold.. Yellow Gold Submariners are 221g too.
Much more than the spot price of 24 Ct Gold in Troy Ounces, but with the insane money being asked for a stainless steel ceramic Daytona approaching £30K, I’d always go precious metal. It’s fully tarnish proof.
@@andrewholt3849 I asked specifically, as it affects the wearability. I have the ceramic steel Daytona , at around 132 grams...so the beast in Platinum is more than double its weight! I tried it one when launched and was impressed , but shocked by the weight. May thanks for the info :o)
I went to my AD a few years ago looking for a Sub and they had one of these available at retail. I can kick myself for not buying it.

I picked up my Platona baguette dial from my AD this week. From a purely selfish point of view, I definitely wouldn’t complain if it gets discontinued in April!
Congratulations, you have done very well to get one. I personally don't think its going this year, 2023 is the 60th anniversary so I feel we will see something interesting released to replace the 116506.

Why is there 2 variation of this daytona ?
@@-Prashant-Kumar They were both released at the same time in 2013, the non diamond dial used brown sub dials, and the baguette dial uses blue sub dials, it's a subtle difference to tell the dials apart.
Personally I prefer with brown sub dials as the contrast gives a better look on the watch IMO.

No one should pay above retail for this watch or any watch. Forget supply and demand but if you can afford this watch you will obviously understand how any retail market works. Yes the dealers will tell you it’s a THREE year waiting list. Is it ???
