Twin reverb on steroids. Your understanding of schematics is mind warping. Especially liking this mod because the amp can at anytime revert to its classic fender twin settings/sounds. The demos you made absolutely prove this, and was a real treat for me, watching the video. Great to see you back, in any of your incarnations.
Brad, this is YOUR MOMENT that changed your fortune!!! I have a factory Fender Evil Twin and it never sounded ANYTHING like this no matter what I tried!!! It's the reason it's buried under other amps and pedals in my living room corner for several years after I bought it and gave up on tube distortion from a Fender amp. GREAT JOB Brad...your future is now secured and only going upwards and onwards!!! Dan G. :):):)
Wow! This is the video I've been hoping you'd make for years dude. Always knew the Twin could do it all with a few mods but I've never seen this particular combination of mods together and BOY do they work a treat! Thank you so much for sharing this content Brad. Going to spend all day tomorrow modding my old SF.
Wow! Just Wow! That in impressive as hell, from the great opening to the clear explanation of the internals of the amp, the mods and the honest inclusion of your errors-and their reason along with your great humor this has to be my favorite video of yours to date. This should be at or near the top of "The List of The Greatest UA-cam Videos" The amp and musical demo at the end way the best topper too, You included many great styles of my favorites (Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Metallica Rainbow, Dio etc.) From lawn equipment to amp magic you always impress. Thank You. 🤯💯👍👏
Dude, your technical prowess is only surpassed by your musical talents. It's a pleasure to watch both, and for someone like me who has been with you since day one, the growth on the chops is very fun to follow. Whenever I see a cool lick or phrase from ANY guitarist I bookmark the video into a special folder so I can go back, watch it in quarter speed and figure out what's happening. I probably have a dozen of your videos in there so far. This one's going into the bin as well!
That's kind of you to say. Thanks! I can honestly say I am a better musician today than I have ever been, and I hope to keep improving until the day I die.
Damn I wish you were not 2000 miles away, I ain’t never heard a twin do that!!!😳😅 And with single coils no less! Amazing, the mad amp scientist, as usual, Brad, seriously time to build a guitoligist custom head! SMOKIN’
Cool vid...I have a mid 70's Ampeg V2 that runs 7027A's...from what I've heard, the extra pin is to spread out or dissipate the heat which is good because they run at ridiculously high voltages on this particular model...the original Magnavox/Sylvania tubes are STILL running strong..a testament to the quality of those tubes
I cringed when you mentioned that you put "more robust" tubes in... was hoping that you didn't drop in 7027A's, as they can require wiring modification to the tube sockets. If going for a direct drop-in that is more robust than a 6L6GC (@35W per tube), go with 7581A's. I run a set of those in my 1978 Peavey Mace head, biased them up at about 60%, and it sounds glorious! I will say that the advantage of 7027A's is that they can withstand higher plate voltages, up to 600V per tube. Keep up the awesome videos, my man!! Love it!
They would work fine if I wanted to rewire that Pin 1 and Pin 6. But it's just too much to put in 4x terminal strips just for that purpose. Still kicking myself that I didn't see that Pin 6 tied to Grid 1. Really stupid oversight. Won't happen again, I assure you that.
@@TheGuitologist Oh yeah, they would absolutely work fine with just little bit of rewiring on the sockets, I 100% agree. Being as I've experimented heavily with output tubes and such, it just kinda made me cringe for a minute there when you put in the 7027A's, then you got "the pop" (arc over)... I've been there and done that too, man. It was an honest mistake. The amp came out top notch, and your drumming is solid!

Oh, you are alive. It's about time you made a damn video brother. Seriously, we need some amp repair/mod videos. You and Uncle Doug are my mentors and the genesis of me having the balls to man up and start messing with tube guitar amps. Get your Sugar Honey Iced Tea together.
Great video Brad, really effective mods and a great demo. I wondered why the green 💚 screen behind you but watching the the Linsey twins playing drums and guitar though a truly Twin Reverb was priceless. Maybe another relative on bass? :) 👍
Excellent video Brad bloody epic mate! Even your intro video! Must have taken some effort to get even THAT sorted! Impressive! Great bunch of mods you incorporated into that Twin Reverb, to give players rock concert levels of crunch & distortion at bedroom level volumes. Just brilliant mate! I predict this video will get referenced by many guitar amp techs in the future! Loved the sparking & farking arcing incident! Like seeing a thunderstorm going on inside the valve! Glad you caught that on video! Masterful playing in the end demo too! Not only guitar but drums too? And then I'm sure I heard the warbling of a bass guitar as well! I don't even know the demo songs you were playing but geez they sounded great! And all at bedroom volume! Whohoo! 😃👍 You're a phenomenon!
Katzenjammerz! I think you covered all aspects and gave that Twin some usable options! My first amp was a '65 Twin back in 1978. If it was good enough for Johnny Funders it's plenty for me. It was loud but too clean so I had a Ratco Rat box. Loved all those love ballads at the end Brad.
I have ice cubes. I used them with my deluxe reverb for a clean boost and took the tank out. I used an adm 256 for verb and delay back then. I pretty much had a steel player rig but with a guitar and a Fender 1x12 instead of a Nashville 400. I was obsessed with learning steel parts but never got into the benders.
Holy mother of god......🤣 that one day an amp messiah will come... has come, brad your percussion capabilities have elevated to that whole other level, so yes i`ve enjoyed this a tiny bit 🙃😉👍
Holy cow dude!!! I passed out after watching scar my guitar live show tonight woke up about the end of this video when you were showing some of the sounds the amp could do which are stellar and then all the sudden you start cranking at the end and I was like holy cow!!!😮 I've never watched one of your videos ever dude but I absolutely will be checking out your channel from now on!!! I'm super impressed with your playing! Oh I recently picked up a '93 Blues DeVille... Will these mods work on it??? I'm going to go back and watch the whole video while I am awake lol.

I made such an aluminium strap on a 1975 sf twin (a little better I swear). the choke ears were broken and it was bouncing under the chassis. The customer played the amp in this condition several gigs before bringing it to my workshop. Funny story. Love your videos!
Great job! Very interesting mods. The engineering part of my aging gray matter enjoyed this and you're taking time to explain. My SuperReverb has been modded a small bit, taking it from the silver face to a black face way of working. (Thanks to Steve W.) Will have to find your other video outlet. Thank you for doing this! Hope to run into you some day.
I’ve never opened an amp. The most I’ve ever done is pull a power tube. I just play ‘em. However, I do enjoy these videos. If it would ever come up, maybe I won’t be entirely ignorant on the subject.
During signal tube testing, the 12a's kept getting worse. ... .. but you weren't turning the knob on the top left back to the right after the long life test. I don't doubt they were bad. But were they as bad as the tester said if that knob was in the wrong place?
Marshall gain on a Twin Reverb. Pretty damn cool Brad. I also tend to install 1-ohm resistors on cathode to ground, especially on EL34s as they have a nasty habit of shorting cathode to ground when the tube craps out. The 1-ohm resistor has two functions. First it provides an easy measurement point for cathode current, like you said. Second, it works like a fuse, which you just provided a phenomenal example of. Better than burning up wires, resistors, etc. which does happen.
Great video brad mis these type of vids. I build a amp for audio I'm running those 6n6c tubes there a great tube they were very cheap to purchase those soviet era tubes are well built so they could use them in military applications thanks bro hope all is good
Badass Brother. You're a genius and very talented. Although I own quite a few amps in my music room, I don't own any Fender Amps currently. Fender makes amazing amps, no doubt, just not for me. My favorite types of amps are Plexi's and Modded Plexi Amps....Friedman, Marshall, and Metropoulos, along with Soldano SLO's and a Mark V Series Mesa Boogie. My favorite amp Fender made, that is no longer available to buy is a Fender Prosonic with dual cascading gain. It was badass, sounded amazing, and was Fender's answer to Marshall. My favorite all time speakers to play through are UK Made Greenbacks.....The best speakers to play Plexi/Modded Plexi Amps through, imho. My favorite speaker cab combination is 2 UK Made Greenbacks on Top, with 2 Vintage 30's on the bottom. Combination of those 2 speakers sounds killer. 12:27 Original pots?! They don't make 'em Like that anymore. 😕 I bought a cheapie, low end Fender amp for practice a while ago and the pots started to go crackly after about a year or two of light use. Oh, and I loved the "twins" playing at the end of the video!! 😃
You got the same tube tester as me. Got mine online about 8 years ago. Very dependable to test for bad tubes and gives you an idea how much life is left. The automatic neon bulb short detector lights work well. There is the 6000 model which tests older tubes and the 6000A. The 6000 is known to be a more accurate tester but it is harder to operate with short testing. Hickok made good stuff.

BRAD ! BRAD ! and You just finished saying you are not going to experiment with Your clients amps. I was pretty damn sure a 7027 is not the same as a 6L6. OMG so You in all likelihood destroyed a beautiful quad of 7027's !!!! AAAaarrrrggghh! Great way to sdestroy an Output Transformer !
I have seen those GE dry electrolytic caps in blackface Bassman and Bandmaster amps from the Mid-late 60's (circa 66-68). They could have been replacements from service back in the day but as you saw the date codes, seems to be period correct. Due for replacement fer sure regardless. Those xfmr brackets are pretty sketchy.....ya never know what you might run into.....I've seen worse and wielder things...keeps life interesting don't it!?. Good job! Cheers!
I’ve performed all these mods before, except the Reverb Bypass. No reason to do them one at a time unless I just wasn’t sure how they’d come out. For someone who hasn’t done the mods before, probably best to do as you suggested and do one at a time.
I have a vintage 1964-1965 Twin that I had modified for high gain, it was good for metal but now I would have preferred a factory high gain master volume amp like a Boogie because this mod was kind of rough but it did the job in the early 1980’s with Duncan Invader pickups.
I don't know where i would be without my OX attenuator. By far the best one i have used, and the most expensive. Next best thing is probably a Two Notes Captor although there are some really inexpensive inline options. I expect you could turn your hand to something like that on a whim Brad. I also am a Twin Reverb fan. I have one with red knobs. It's a late 80's one i think.. Regardless it sounds amazing and these to can be had for a song. Not the pre CBS ones but i think they are based on the same circuit. Another good un Brad, cheers mate.
I would love to send you my Baldwin professional C1 112 for a check up , it seems to work fine but the vibrato is not working , Love seeing the videos . keep up the good work , Alfred NYC .
I have 2 red knob evil twins and they are fucking amazing. Rivera designed and they with peel paint off the walls one of the most beautifully underrated amps ever.
If you short the reverb jacks, will you not have a load for the reverb transformer? I’ve read that If there is not load the transformer will burn up. How does the pot handle the load?
If you trace to the other side there is a 220k grid leak resistance from the recovery tube grid to ground. The tank itself normally presents about 77 ohms of resistance on top of that. By shorting jacks you are changing the total load, but not completely.
Let me clarify a bit...First, I meant to say the Input tank transducer is 77 ohms, not 77k. That resistance isn't going away when you short the jacks. You're bypassing the tank with the AC signal, but you are not removing the DC load the transformer secondary is seeing at any point. It's still there, and it's being put into parallel with the grid leak resistor from the recovery tube, but if you do the math, it doesn't change the DC resistance the transformer secondary sees between its leads.@@lowheadroom
All thes mods would be awesome on the silverface bandmaster TFL 5005.. again thanks for the cool video, sure wish you where alot closer to where i am located so i could get my amps modded

Pure entertainment Brad, thank you! I am sat here bunged up with bad cold. That was great medicine.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Did some troubleshooting and maintenance on an amp, and managed to play some great guitar and drums. Youre the full package. Why I enjoy your channel.

Pure joy those videos! Congrats from Brazil!
Glad you like them!
Couple of those recorded tracks sounded very Iron Maiden-like. Badass work and playing as usual Brad!
Dude, I'm blown away. That sounds magnificent! -So did the playing. -If one could footswitch that gain in, that'd be veritable sliced bread.

Good job! Cheers!
Ghost Brad!
...i dig the lights around the bass drum!
Thanks man! that LED light string was made for going around a cornhole board. It's been repurposed.
My 67 AB 763 super reverb had those exact GE caps. Some times you can restaff them with modern caps so it appears to be original.
A joy too watch
Wouldn’t you want to establish that the amp is fully functional before attempting mods and then test each mod before moving on to the next?
I’ve performed all these mods before, except the Reverb Bypass. No reason to do them one at a time unless I just wasn’t sure how they’d come out. For someone who hasn’t done the mods before, probably best to do as you suggested and do one at a time.
Dude is the client the guy from that Zim's guitar youtube channel? If not he sounds just like him on the phone
Thank you for another awesome journey into the world of classic tube amps. Btw 6п3с pronounce like 6p3s
Thanks for the info!
very Richie Blackmore... damn good ending to some nice work Brad
I have a vintage 1964-1965 Twin that I had modified for high gain, it was good for metal but now I would have preferred a factory high gain master volume amp like a Boogie because this mod was kind of rough but it did the job in the early 1980’s with Duncan Invader pickups.
Ive seen those GE caps in lots of fender amps . Always on youtube vids. But they were fairly common
What an incredible sounding out that thing is. I wish my twin sounded like that when it was cranked up.😊
Dig the work area and the tools I hope to get back into electronic repair I did as late teens with hiFi and guitar amps fixed some ruined some
I have 2 red knob evil twins and they are fucking amazing. Rivera designed and they with peel paint off the walls one of the most beautifully underrated amps ever.
When working on an amp would the elevator music help me solder faster like you can? What would be the best elevator music? Great video.
Pretty much any elevator music. If you can, get a Muzak station where they do crappy jazz covers of familiar hits. Those help maximize solder speed.
Quite the fire breathing Dragon you have created. And totally docile if you want as well. Pure Alchemy brother Brad...
If you short the reverb jacks, will you not have a load for the reverb transformer? I’ve read that If there is not load the transformer will burn up. How does the pot handle the load?
you must be new around here. its not a guitologist video unless something goes up in smoke..
If you trace to the other side there is a 220k grid leak resistance from the recovery tube grid to ground. The tank itself normally presents about 77 ohms of resistance on top of that. By shorting jacks you are changing the total load, but not completely.
@@TheGuitologist right on thanks!
@@TheGuitologist right on , that makes sense. Thanks!
All thes mods would be awesome on the silverface bandmaster TFL 5005.. again thanks for the cool video, sure wish you where alot closer to where i am located so i could get my amps modded
Nice demo at the end, don't know what you were trying to pull but if you look real close you can see right through you.😅
