How ya doin' with your UA-cam channel? Do you wanna throw a link to it below and tell the world how your diamond shines in its own unique way?
There are those who have passion and a relentless drive toward building a piece of media and delivering collected and well researched product while showing their respect for the craft, game, and audience through their well written scripts and appropriately edited videos....and then there are those who get millions of views per upload. I liked the vid, and I like the channel homie. Your work is respected here. To quote UA-cams assumed Vincent Van Goph "It's every day bro".

A sober, honest take on the matter. It's a reality check for some. Sadly, it's statistically improbable one will "blow up" on this website. Imho, even if I did YT and managed to break through, I wouldn't be able to sustain it. It needs constant work past that, new ideas etc. Less than 100-200 people have sustained a big channel by being who they are.
This is a very honest take on a craft I've grown to love over the last two years - even in spite of the overwhelming tidal wave of frustration that walks hand-in-hand with it.
The constant battle of wanting to put time into your work vs working the day job that keeps you alive (and the roof above your head) is endlessly antagonizing, but for whatever reason I don't feel any less motivated than I did around when I first started. It'll either amount to something, or it won't... so might as well try my hand at making something out of nothing. I've met some amazing, wonderful people since starting this - some of whom have become my closest friends. Can't stop, won't stop.

I worked in online marketing for a few years, and one thing that I learned without a doubt from working on the back-end is that Google has monetized UA-cam to the point where the platform is no longer truly democratized. You will not “go viral” on here in the traditional sense without dropping some money on pay-per-click ads and marketing on other social media platforms. It takes a lot of time and consistency to build up a following, and you have to either pay to play or play by the algorithm’s rules and upload once per day and really work those keywords aggressively and consistently. You’re more likely to go viral on tiktok because their algorithm is actually designed to serve up small creators. That being said, your videos are truly fantastic and I fully expect this channel to see some serious exponential growth. UA-cam served up your Deus Ex series in search and I’m really glad I found your content!

As someone who got a minor lightning strike (one of my videos got like 100K views) passing from being a 50 subs channel to 2K i can definitely support what you said, it's not about the quality or the type of content, prior to my lucky strike i have like 25 videos uploaded, a year in the platform and all i could grow was 50 subs, and even now that i have somewhat of an audience i still struggle to get noticed if i publish anything that isn't related to the content that made me famous (it was one of those iceberg videos). Good thing I'm not planning to make this my way of living must be really frustrating. Good analysis.

After watching this, I took a good long look at your channel. I’d been following along since the Deus Ex review put me on. I hadn’t realized just how relatively small your metrics were compared to the level of quality and the expectation I had in my head. You make some great points and point out some good info here. Thanks for doing what you do and I hope you get to enjoy making what you do in whatever small part.
Thank you! The channel has grown so much even from when this video was released, but I stand by everything in it. It really is advice for those starting out to not chase waterfalls, but find the rivers and the lakes they may find better residence around.

You must be doing something right because the algorithm served your System Shock video up to me on a silver platter. I’ve never played, or have been interested in that game but I watched the entire 3 hour video just because I love your intelligent analysis of it. Great stuff man keep it up
It's like the new Hollywood. Everyone's just hoping Orson Welles will give them the standard Rich & Famous Contract, and even then, I know how hard Hollywood can be because I read The Disaster Artist by Greg Sestero (of The Room fame).
I fortunately make enough money to support myself so any video projects I come up with are pretty much entirely just for personal enjoyment because I really enjoy writing and editing, things I just don't get to do at my job. My limiting factor is more often time or energy that I can spend on these extra projects that aren't taken up by more relaxing activities or studying other skills. I have so many half finished video project ideas that become outdated or uninteresting to finish by the time I actually have time to work on them. It does make me miss the highschool days when I actually had time to make stuff consistently.

You sound kind of bitter, not gonna lie
When you dive into a red ocean, that sorta develops. The skill is in mitigating it.
I reject the notion that space is boring! I would love to do mundane experiments up there.
A more apt comparison here might be kids back in the day wanting to be famous TV or music stars. Then again, the way gaming appeals to a more introverted crowd just like science does, makes for an interesting overlap where you have introverted folks trying and learning to be entertainers for their twitch gaming audience. It's interesting for sure.
Anyway, good video as usual. Not the most original statement to be making obviously. But it needs to be said. And you did a good job translating that Veritasium video to apply to gaming youtube specifically.
Don't get into game streaming, or any 'content creator' career, expecting to be the next PewDiePie or something. Instead, just do it because you enjoy doing it! And try not to let yourself be (emotionally) manipulated and stressed out by algorithms and the way these platforms are built to be inscrutable popularity contests. Easier said than done of couse, the manipulation is strong and very smartly designed, but still. Try to be chill about it all.
I've learned not to be so twisted by the Algorithm, bur I know there are those that pore over every detail as though they're divining some secret knowledge and a hidden ancient narrative by obsessing coed them.
And I don't yhi k space is boring, bur I think we, collectively, do.
Nice video. I’ve been doing this YT thing for almost 2 years now and only a couple of days ago did I manage to become partnered. I’ve long gave up on any sort of dream that I could ever make a living from YT, but if I reach a point where YT could sustain me for a bit if something happens to my day job, I’ll be happy
Kudos for keeping it real. It's not to say you can NEVER make this a full-time thing, but people, broadly, need to temper their expectations greatly.
@@NthReview yeah, I know what you mean. I create pretty much the same content as you, and given the time it takes to make from start to finish, you have to get really lucky to get noticed by the algo. It’s simply not possible to upload frequently with the type of content we make

Luck isn't just a necessary aspect of success in UA-cam, it's a necessary component of success in life, period. Merely being born to rich parents gives a person virtually unlimited advantages and opportunities.
It's true. Unfortunately, there are so many who think luck doesn't exist and that success on UA-cam (and everywhere else!) is just a matter of merit and hard work.
How many times are you going to change that title?
This should be the last one. I was A/B testing titles and thumbnails for a couple videos, but with the traffic I have, it's impossible to see if it has any effect. So, this is here to stay!
The truth is that if you wanna make a living in UA-cam, you need to treat it like you’re running an actual business. It’s not fun… at all. You create content that people watch. I’ll be honest with you. Gaming isn’t the way. You need to look in an entirely different direction niche wise. The good news is that it’s relatively easily to make a living on UA-cam if you stick with high cpm niches.
