The most disturbing part of this movie is how the tooth fairies can turn good natured human beings into one of them. I'll never get over the fact that they let the step mom down down there with them just for her to turn into a fairy too and the fact that there is no saving her anymore.
What exactly were they going to do? As far as they could tell, she had been dragged down and going after her would have just gotten themselves killed as well.
@@toddclawson3619 I know. I'm just saying it disturbed me since I was a kid.
@@fireprooff9922 Oh. I thought you were criticizing them for leaving her when there was nothing they could really do.
@@toddclawson3619 Nah, I meant that it was a shame that they couldn't have grabbed her out of there. Imagine what she must have felt like being stuck in that hole with these nasty creatures knowing that no one's coming to get her because she's going to turn.
She basically is still protecting her family though. By the looks of it, she tricked the fae to hide deeper and don't come out for many years, giving her family more time to get away from the location as well as live out their lives free from the fae threat.
I like how Del Toro took his idea of the tooth fairies from Hellboy 2, which only had about 5 min of screen time, and made a whole movie about them, making them even more hauntingly fascinating.
I mean they were kinda terrifying before...
@@hannahdavis5725 th-that's why I said "even more"...
Actually this isn't the case. The 2011 movie is actually a remake of a 1973 made for TV film of the same name. From what I can remember what I was told about the original there was no daughter and the creatures may not have been hungry for teeth, instead they were just after the woman to turn her into one of their own.
@@Kirdex90 yep - but boy were the monsters cheesey looking in the '73
still, they had super little screen time and the whispering voices - man that left an impression
still a great creepy film (haven't seen the 2011 ver yet)
If that's the case del toro should have written it where hellboy came in and save them all from that!💯😁😉👍
What the audience missed here is that Kim still did what she had to do to protect her stepdaughter by tricking the fairies to hide deeper and wait longer before they go out again.
I was looking for a reply that mentioned this. That's exactly what I thought, she was still protecting her stepdaughter, and others for as long as she could.
Oh hold up, so my sneaking suspicion that last fairy voice was Kim was correct?
@@staceyd8397 Right
She will probably keep tricking them forever, since they aren't particularly bright and probably immortal. And they will probably think they are really smart for doing so, which is the best part.
@@bigbangrafa8435 Well they are the twisted remnants of children. and as we know children aren't really that bright.
Man that ending is really depressing, though i feel like her telling them to dig down is her humanity trying to keep them away form anyone else that might show up in the house
I hope you’re right.
Now that I watch a summary of this movie as I'm older I've come to realize what a good mom/friend Kim could've been, and how horrible Alex was, how sad
Kim really did love her :(
it is sad. but she tells them to dig deeper and still has her own voice. Very interesting.
@@bobcharlie2337 agreed
Well Alex isn’t the most horrible, to be fair he did step up when Sally was abandoned. Reluctantly…but still, a bit of good character… I mean what else did Kim see in him?
@@mw9688 I'm not sure, you make good points however he still gets a 4 out of 10 on the good dad scale
This is a crazy fantasy horror film that shows you the dark side of fairy tales, the stories you didn't know about, until now.
you are right. Fairy tales where made to make kids not go into the woods to get lost. or to make them behave so not "creatures or witches" would take them away. now days a fairy tale has been defiled by the "happy fairy tale ending" The little mermaid never got a happy ending in the original story. its a sad sad story :')
The fae, are horrible creatures, they are nothing like Disney version.
@@johnwikfors5310 oh yeah it's sth like every step she takes feels like she was walking on broken glass and the prince ditched her for another woman . Pinocchio was also horrifying there was a point where he was burned and strangled . The one where the 2 children found the house made of candy pretty sure they got eaten
You should also check out gretal and hansel.
That ending is always disturbing smh she didn't deserve that
"Hello, 911? My wife just fell down a pit in my basement, I need some help! It literally just happened so if we act fast I bet we could actually do something about it instead of the other option of trying absolutely nothing."
And they did absolutely nothing like they didn't care at all.
@@beanstalker2123 ofc the director will not make a scene the police to do investigation. You guys must understands that this is a MOVIE. M.O.V.I.E
@@seiku5345 I mean yeah it's a movie but a scene that reminds you of that really takes you out of the immersion
@@woadblue, and get more people killed?
This is one of those films that you've forgotten about, but immediately recognise😂.
x'D literally commented this
Your so right my guy I went to see this in theatres and I enjoyed it fir the most part but since then I never see it being played anywhere again.
the moment I saw that basement it all came back
Kinda feel that about the pumpkin head movies I just saw the monster from the am/pm ads
True
Kim was the mother Sally needed; Kim was genuinely the only person, besides the groundskeeper and cook, who had Sally's best interest at heart.
I used to be so pissed with Sally for taking the cover off that damn opening. But what makes me mad now as an adult is the neglect of the Dad. Like your child’s in distress pay attention!
Fr the first time I saw this I was like a little awareness of your surroundings and some heavy boots could have prevented this
I wish they showed or explained how they turned humans in tooth fairy. Its disturbing but interesting to think about!
I don’t think so it’s the idea of “you don’t want to know how the Sausage is made.” Type of thing we’re if you know to much that thing stops being terrifying. For example in the movie Overlord we get barely any information about the tar and yet we still find it kind of terrifying at how many other people had used it over the centuries. It’s the same with this knowledge often makes things less scary sure you may be happy to know and still might find it creepy, but not knowing the full extent is just unnerving.
My theory is that it is like Sméagol’s transformation into Gollum. It doesn’t completely turn the victim into a faerie, but whatever corruptive magics that the faeries possess twists and corrupts their minds and bodies until the victim can’t help but view his/herself as one of them. Imagine it like a magical form of Stockholm Syndrome…
Her death was brutal. The way her legs snapped as she was dragging in all to save a kid that wasn't hers. Super sad ending.
Fr
10:00 “Like a thug she explains she needs it for protection” LOL
Was scared of the dark for 6 years after watching “Darkness Falls” once. Let’s hope I can sleep after this video. For some reason- tooth fairies freak me out in these
I should add that to the list then lol
Lmfao darkness falls scared tf outta me when i was younger
Man, Darkness Falls was so creepy
@@filmcomicsexplained please do!!!
@@filmcomicsexplained Honestly I thought that's what this was about at first til I realized it was a whole different movie.
That lil girl was an AMAZING actress! I’m curious as to what she’s doing now. Late 00’s/early 10’s she pulled off every roll she was in including being better than some of the adult actors
Terabithia was a pretty nice movie
She was brilliantly funny in Just Go Along With It as well! Definitely held her own with Sandler and Aniston
She’s on hbo’s pretty little liars now. She’s great
This one of my personal favorites! I really wished for a sequel but hey that’s just me wishing. I really wanted to know about the history and lore behind what originally caused these creatures.
Happy to see you covering it Nyat! Thank you 😁
Awesome Paul!
Exactly! We were given information but not enough for us to be satisfied! I have so many questions that I still need answered like the history of the Tooth fairies, and this ancient civilization, all we saw was the path there (the rocky drop that was in the fireplace)
There’s a tie-in book! Don't Be Afraid of the Dark: Blackwood's Guide to Dangerous Fairies. It’s a reproduction of the journal Kim is shown at the library.
I like to think each fairy is a person they stole and turned into a fairy too
@@MiaLucifer Yes but who is the original one? How did it start? There should be a 2nd part.
My sister was terrified of these things when we first watched this movie. I used to whisper “teeth” in a raspy voice in a dark room and it would freak her out
Wickedness lol
savage
Ur evil. I love it.
Hilariously my mom was scared of the og 73 version played at night. The same happened to me when the ad space for the 2010 film when I stood up late once or something. This film is way too effective at its name.
wow that's cruel
THis movie unnerved me when I watched for phobia and paranoia reasons, and how Alex is by far one of the worst fathers I've seen in a horror film. I love how the Fairies are able to convert humans into their own kind, and would have been sup hyped if they did a prequal about the crusade against the tooth fairies that led to the pope making a peace pact with them.
that would have been awesome seeing armies of knights vs entire mega swarms of these little bastards.
That's true. 😄
Love the tooth fairy design, that paired with their intelligence makes them even more terrifying.
man, Kim didn't deserve the fate she got :( One of the only people looking out for the kid
Alex is a terrible father who really needed to have been the target of the tooth fairies, that's what makes this so unfair cause Kim would have loved her unconditionally.
Exept that those fairies wanted to cause suffering, for them, Alex was the less interesting to attack.
I remember the original creeping me out as the owner didn't win. This version had me thinking the father was in on it. Some sort of Faustian deal.
these types of horror films is exactly why i don't live in homes with a basement, attic access.
This film frightened me when I it came out. They did real good with bring the Fae to life. Interestingly, aside from being known as Tooth fairies, the Fae can also be known as Changelings. Taking the child’s place while they are taken to the Fairy World.
the Fae is more a catagorization like how the japanese have the word "yokai" its many diffrent supernatural species that are grouped under one banner almost like a mythical version of animal subgroups and kingdoms.
Loved the design of the tooth fairies.
Me too!
Thinking about it probably somewhere in his house he has the model for the Tooth Fairies. And whenever he wants to scare someone he just moves it around to a random spot.
@@persomiissleepy Definitely.
DO DARKNESS FALLS NEXT PLEASE! Another tooth fairy film!!!
This is bringing back some memories of hiding under the blanket the entire time cause I was to afraid to even look at the screen for a second lol
What some people won't know is that this film is a theatrical remake of a TV movie from 1973. In the original film, Sally is an adult woman instead of a little girl, and she ends up getting dragged into the basement fireplace by the creatures.
This movie scared the hell outta me. Even just thinking about it gives me shivers.

I wish there would've been more past events in the mansion with the creatures.
This movie is criminally underrated i was sad when I heard there wouldn't be a sequel del Toro is the man
My PTSD just came back flooding , Guillermo del Toro is master director especially when it has creatures in it ,he should've been given the green light to do the second movie 😭😭😭
That's crazy I just thought of this movie yesterday 😅

WHOOHOOO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO 🥳🥳🥳
Let’s go Alexis!
@@filmcomicsexplained 😆😆
I was a part of this film. The exterior, and some of the interior, was filmed at "Drusilla" in Mount Macedon, Victoria, Australia. The main building was covered by a facade and the crew built several temporary buildings on the same property. They also built the fence and gate that appeared as the entrance from the road and the driveway to the mansion.
Troy Nixey originally directed the film, but, Guillermo Del Toro was called in to assist in location. Del Toro's credits are script writer and producer.
Most of the interior scenes were filmed at the Docklands in Melbourne, but the crew setup an interior room contained within the main entrance of the original building. That is the "fireplace" in the film.
It was originally set to be filmed within a few weeks on Drusilla, but production took much longer and this was extended several times to almost eight weeks.
Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes were on set for much of the time and Tom Cruise, married to Katie Holmes at the time, flew out to Melbourne for a one day visit.
Edit 4:27 The fireplace shown here is the not the fireplace I mentioned above. I believe the fireplace shown at this time stamp was filmed either in an artificial, outside building or at the Docklands set in Melbourne.
8:08 *This* is the fireplace I was referring to. This was shot in the (much larger) entrance of Drusilla, but the film crew built a series of artificial walls to create the impression of a smaller room.
Awesome video!!!! I always liked the movie and my wife loves it, one if her favorite horror movies!
ever seen the original?
wow this is a movie I definately need to re watch. the first time I saw it I was just scared af. the scene where Sally flashes one of the fairies under her sheets jump scared the sh!t out of me. thanks for covering this Nyat! I love your vids!!!

guillermo del toro is a master when it comes to monsters. love his work
It's actually a remake of the 1973 film
@@CassandraDarklightGuillermo del toro is still really good at horror

I would have place flood lights pointing at the hole and pour a ton of gasoline and light it after.
I totally forgot about this movie. Good video as always. And here is another thing you can add to the list "Hungry" Season 7, Episode 3 of the x-files, if it is not already on the list.
Oh that’s a good one!
I remember watching the tv movie in the 70s as a kid. Scared the crap outta me.
This movie legit, scared the hell out of me 😫
Loved how creepy this movie is
This was such an amazing horror film. The tooth fairies are so fascinating. So twisted and dark. I wish we knew more about them. Like the forces that created them and such. Were they once good or were they always evil? If they were good how did they become the monsters they are now? Wish there was a prequel made but maybe I’m just hopelessly wishing. Thank so much for making these videos. They’re always a delight to watch ❤️.
Sally's kind of a mess of a child dude. She's activly being self destructive.
If I was Alex, I think I would set the house on fire as I was leaving.
This is such an underrated film idc what anyone says
Been waiting for this one. Happy you got around to it.
I remember watching this when I kid and that ending tho. Could you do a vid about The Zuni Fetish Doll from the Trilogy of Terror movie because that one gave me nightmares when I was a kid.
Awesome! Adding that up the list now, thanks :)
I always thought that this was an interesting continuation of the tooth fairy creatures that del Torro used in Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. I don't know if that's actually the case but they are very similar. I was excited for the film to come out because of his involvement. In the end though, it could have really benefitted from the visual atmosphere that del Torro creates. Because it lacked that, it was a bit underwhelming. Thank you for doing another great video!
it's actually a remake of the 1973 movie...same name
though they didn't have a daughter in that and they weren't after teeth IIRC they just wanted the woman outright (and they got her in the same manne)
@@CassandraDarklight Thanks for the info
@@imalloutagum6083 my pleasure! (it's just that I'm old enough to remember the original)
these ones are actually worse cause the hellboy tooth fairys couldnt use tools and wernt sapient level inteligent like these ones are.

the whispers and the fireplace...man I'm with you. I've been carrying that final image about for like I dunno 45 years
The original and the remake were both pretty decent films. Each one creepy in its own unique ways.
there was a remake?!?!?! or is this the remake?
@@Thaumiel_5 this was the remake. The original had the same name, and was from the 70s. It was a made for TV movie I believe
This movie is so hard for me to watch and it isn't because of the tooth fairies it's Sally, she looks and reminds me so much of my daughter when she was that age and the sadness and loneliness she goes through breaks my heart and just makes me want to hold her and give her the love she wants from her mother.
I had forgotten about this film but I'll check it out again because I actually liked it
Del Toro did a brilliant job with this film
I loved this film so much. As a side note, the promotional website used to ask for your name, and once typed in, would whisper and call your name like the Tooth Fairies.
That led to me typing in my GF's name one night and leaving it on to call and torment her XD
😭😭😭
When I first saw this in theaters as a kid, I was super disappointed because I loved Guillermo Del Toro, but expected something scarier. Looking back, I love this movie and the entire idea of it.
I think I was just too desensitized to most horror from an early age.
But all these years later, I just watched Mad God and Del Toro has DEFINITELY still got it
it's actually a remake of the 1973 movie of the same name
I’ve always liked those little merry-go-round night light things that you usually see in little girls rooms (usually accompanied with older looking furniture) in media. I’ve seen that particular night light in video games and movies and they always made me want one lol. I love anything that lights up.
I actually caught the original from the 70s with Kim Darby on a classic horror channel. This was actually a great remake. Would you also consider the remake of Salem's Lot?
This movie scared the hell out of me when I was a kid like nightmares for years...so thanks for traumatizing me again it's more the ending that makes me still uncomfortable to this day...btw could you one day cover the Ymir from 20 Million Miles to Earth?
Your welcome, and sure! I'll add that to the list and look into that :)
Saaaaame sometimes I randomly just think of the ending or the monsters
@@hun7erkiller553 yeah but I have a general fear of this type of creature since I was into crypids as a kid so i guess that's why it stuck and I guess In a similar way to drag me to hell you have a good person get a fairly gruesome death and or transformation.
@@jurassicroom7673 ya drag me to hell that ending was such a slap in the face smh
And like you I think what ends up sticking with me is when the undeserving die in a gruesome way or when a bad guy wins like in the movie The girl in the photographs still haven't been able to forget it it's fucked up
I kind of have the same with the 1973 version...the whispers and the fireplace still get me
For once, I would like a movie where BOTH parents. (Be one adopted or nah) actually fully believe the child early on in the movie and they work together in trying to stop the threat/monsters.
Tired of the same old "One parent believes other doesn't until it's too late". Then again, it was 2010. XD Nevertheless, You're summary of this movie was fantastic and I look forward to your next video.
Ahh yes the untold story of lord blackwood, legendary explorer, hunter, and all around man of culture! Pre-snail days of course!
I really enjoyed this movie when I saw it in the theater, and I was disappointed that it bombed in theaters.
Not gonna lie, would have been amazing to see the manor get a flash back scene in the new hell boy.
This was a truly great horror movie, and the ending was so good.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 1973 tv film version by the same name. That one creeped me out as a child. Sally was the name of the guy's wife in that movie and she too tried warning him but he didn't take her too seriously until it was too late.
My mom remembers and grew up with the 73 version
I remember this movie and I personally really like it I like how creepy the tooth fairy's are in both design and how they act. Though I do hate the constantly used troupe of the parents and kids have a strained relationship but overall I would recommend this movie if someone asked for some horror movie recommendations.
Have to wonder why it tried to stab him early on. What was the point? They risked exposing themselves and ruining their whole plan
Not gonna lie. When I first glanced at the title, I thought this was going to be an Are You Afraid of the Dark episode.

The Made-For_TV original version of this movie scared the CRAP out of me when I was a kid.
We had a semi-finished area tucked away in the back corner of our basement, with a fireplace that had one of those little "clean-out" doors.

So let me get this straight, nobody decided to make friends with a dentist? Kids teeth are thrown away all the goddamn time. Hell you could have put an orphanage in the house and would have had a perfect supply of children's teeth for the evil.
I swear as a kid the movie trailer was enough to scare the shit out of me,
even tho I forgot about it later on, I recognized it immediately when I saw the thumbnail.
what a great film a real gem if you haven't seen it I advise it
Good summary. Only is missing the detail this is a remake.
Ive watched it twice. You explain it better than I remember it.
Fun fact, my brother tried to scare me with the sounds of the fairies in the middle of the night and I broke his nose. He apologized and calmed me down but still, that was mean. XD
