THE UNHOLY (Bride of Satan, Malefici + Ending) EXPLAINED

- Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’ll be exploring The Unholy, the 2021 supernatural horror directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos and Produced by Sam Raimi, based on the 1983 novel Shrine by James Herbert.
Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, William Sadler, Cricket Brown, Diogo Morgado, Katie Aselton and Cary Elwes, it follows an old town with a horrible history. When Gerry Fenn, a journalist with no integrity stumbles upon the quiet town of Banfield, hoping to turn a bogus story into money, he comes upon a case unlike any other.
A hearing-impaired girl is visited by the Virgin Mary, enabling her to speak and hear for the first time. As more people flock to Banfield to witness the amazing miracles that follow, both the Vatican and Gerry begin to wonder if the events are divine or sinister in nature.
The 1983 novel is an edgy thriller with themes revolving around Catholicism, demonic possession, witchcraft, religious fervour, and miracles. Each chapter begins with a quote from a famous literary work, often a fairy tale or poem dealing with folklore. From the works of Hans Christian Andersen, The Brother’s Grimm to excerpts from Peter Pan, among others.
The mass religious hysteria that envelopes Banfield drives both the novel and the spiritual entity at the core of the story, pushing the beliefs and doubts of the main characters until the final crescendo. Those that were not religious find themselves turning to faith. Those that were already religious are also taught to be weary of religious delusion and false prophets.
It’s a fine tale by James Herbert, brought to life by Evan Spiliotopoulos in his feature film debut. While the essence of the novel is intact, along with the major beats, auxiliary characters are removed to improve pacing and structure.

It's always the Winchester's duty to take on demons
Dean Winchester killed the whore of Babylon in season 5 ( the false prophet ) and now his dad John Winchester killed ( kinda ) another false prophet.
Like father, like son... Or rather the opposite.
nice to see John Winchester is still hunting demons.
“Can’t stop. Won’t stop” - John Winchester, probably 😂
Who?
Still saving people, hunting things, the family business
But did he bring the salt? Lol
And driving that old sweet ride !
The creature design's pretty awesome, the baggy dress and hood kind of breaks the usual outline of a humanoid and she also has uncanny proportions, as well as the eyes behind the mask looking full on black like some owls paired with the raw fleshy skin. Freaky stuff.
The baggy dress and hood reminded me of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come in The Muppet Christmas Carol.
@@jbonkerz Oh yeah that was what it kind of reminded me of, big puppets like them are scary
@@kennethsatria6607 That big reaper looking puppet scared me as a kid and still creeps me out as an adult.
It certainly broke modern protocol
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and it’s use of the kern doll.
Man one look at that evil ass tree is enough to let you know somethings up
I always wondered how a tree could look evil, then me and my wife bought a house, and theres a big old oak tree in the backyard, isnt fully dead, but grows no leaves. Definitely evil, we had it cut down because it gave me the creeps.
@@burpostockings when you cut down the tree did you feel any disturbances in your house ?
Damn Negan got into some shit before the walker apocalypse came.
He was John Winchester before Negan remember that 😂
@@allymaariee I thought that was Soldier Boy.
@@JcBravo8 No that's DEAN Winchester, his son. :P
@@therebelofchaos1674 Goddamn. No wonder Soldier Boy got daddy issues XD XD.
@@allymaariee And he had a better and longer role as Negan.
So Negan went from smashing people with a baseball bat in a zombie apocalypse to banishing demons while carrying the reputation of a tarnished journalist? Damn what an upgrade
No he was fighting demons long before walkers, now he is back. Look up Supernatural they even have Negans bat for a few episodes
If he just whistled the movie would be over in 5 minutes
Your nearly at 1M Niyat! You deserve it mate, your channel is excellent 👌
Thanks mate! :)
it is so cool to see him grow so much :)
@@robbyg6265 totally agree, I’ve watched for years now and am so pleased a fellow Aussie is breaking that level 👏
It's done now :)
When God builds a church, the devil builds a chapel next door.. Never seen this movie but it looks bad ass
The scene of the letters turning to ink was masterclass. Also the way “Mary” comes out of the water was awesome and freaky.
I was really suprised how decent the movie is.. All these movies that center around religion (The Nun) I find are way more terrifying then just some regular monster or killer...esp the super devout fanatic fire and brimstone kind of people...
Great content like always sir..i look forward to your breakdown for the final episode of The Last Of Us soon..
10:28 the bleeding statue is like demon because demons can not only possess human beings but also statues, hanged pictures in the walls that’s according to my beliefs
You can see Sam Raimi in the details for sure. The man is his own brand of genius
I thought all Sam raimi did was the Spider Man films
@@isaiahwilliams2332 evil dead was his first film
Was it the devil that brought the girl back from the dead at the end? With the virgin Mary still weeping blood then that’s what I assumed.
Shit I didn't consider that, though if she already is aware of Mary she could still warn her descendants or just live and die with no children unless there's others
That could be the case, since the devil likes to use deception.
That’s what I considered she’s the conduit the new doll
This could intepreted as God blessing Gerry as a real prophet having the ability to heal. Real miracles or blessings isn’t showy or boastful but is enlightening which is the case for Gerry. He is like the girl now with powers but this time given by God.
Demon cant revive death only God can
Thing I love about Ramy that I love about Del Torro, is they're WILLING to stare at the monsters and see details.
Love your videos! They give me a uniquely relaxed feeling, love your scripts
almost 1 million, congrats you deserve it!
Will keep asking/suggesting.... please do an in depth vid on the Umbrella Corporation. You've already done the monsters and virus itself but nothing on the actual company, how they operate, their influence, etc. It'd be a good one if it's anything like your other in depth vids on the fictional corps! 👌🏼
I wish they gave Alice a slurring-ish accent, if she was mute/deaf her whole life, her tongue woudnt know how to much naturally for words. But if then that would’ve meant they would need more forethought into body functions
Devil magic I guess, it kind of works
Look at The Ancient Enemy from The Phantoms.
Yes Jazz king! Its on the list :)
My perception of the story is the question;
How does anyone know what is true? Which is better than the other, what is true to any story?
I like it. It questions everyone's beliefs for that sect of religion all around.
Basically a classic "there is more to this" story.
Sam and Dean should’ve been on this case
That's overkill for them now. They too busy slapping gods around 😊
Ayyyyyy love your videos 🎉🎉🎉
Excellent video. Would it be possible for you to do
An in-depth look at the movie inception ?
Yes absolutely! I've been meaning to jump back into that
Bill Sadler is always a favorite.
its adam sandler u etard
Great actor
@@filmcomicsexplainedthe best Death
What about Sad Biller?
@@MarcusHalberstramVP He's apparently a threadomancer.
Despite the film receiving negative reviews from critics, it was a commercial success, grossing over $31 million worldwide against its $10 million budget.
I like the openings call back Black Sunday aka The Mask of Satan as the lead villains are tortured in much the same manner having masks nailed to their faces only difference was it was shot 3rd person and also was done in the early 1960's so the scene scared the crap out of audiences world wide.
I like how JeffreyDean Morgan goes for roles in supernatural/demonic plots
Well, like all his other videos, this was definitely interesting. I like it.
It’s supposedly Fauci’s favorite movie.
When a demon tries to underestimate a Winchester
This looks interesting
Read Shrine some fifteen years ago and never realized they made it into a movie. Very cool
Give the devil his due.
He can stay in hell. That was the agreement
*due
"I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, cause I think I'm better than you."- The Devil
Do a video explaining callums corners head shape
Adding that to the list!
@FilmComicsExplained yes its a very scary shape and reassembles a tic tac and even worse he has bamboo limbs 💀. Please sure to mention me so callum knows its me that brought attention to his weird head 😉
You gonna revisit dead space remake my guy, you gotta, if not will u cover things from diablo 4?
Is it good? I’ll have to get back into that universe soon
Very good the lore is slightly different but it could be worth revisiting
Okay bet!
They play this movie constantly on HBO, Stars, Epic, Showtime, The Movie Channel etc. as a matter of fact it was just on last night lol. It was a decent movie, I've just watched it way too many times and been burnt out on it.
Great video. Just 1 thing. The past tense of hang, when talking about a person, is hanged, not hung
I will never not hear "me at here with filmscomicsexplained"
Hi FCE! Could you please make a video on the 9th gate? Thank you! Love all your videos!
My favorite Depp movie.
saw this at 25 seconds after posted
This made me think of the movie the devil conspiracy a movie that keep me entertained but I don't know what to think about it.
[DOOM/Warhammer 40k/Underworld/Attack On Titan] What If DOOM, Warhammer 40k, Underworld And Attack On Titans Took Place In Same Universe
pure chaos.
I love how everyone thinks these overly religious people and figureheads are so blinded hy their own religion that they think EVERYTHING but Christianity is “The Devil”, when they themselves are really “The Devil” they speak of.
The movie opens on February 31st? I never knew February had so many days in it.
It’s a thing in the movie, basically the way they trapped her inside the Kern baby originally was by writing an impossible date of birth (31st February) on the doll when they trap the soul in it.
Look at Sphere.
Absolutely dude!
February 31st in Banfield, Massachusetts? Are you sure? Lol
You should check out John Carpenter 1988 film They Live.
"Bold strategy." Nice dodgeball reference lol
When you can’t afford the colt revolver $9.99 DLC
This was an interesting take on religious horror
Whenever you do a new video about comics, can you pick a series or characters that aren't from DC or Marvel because there are so many different comic publishers like image comics or boom studios that have released a great amount of content that you can cover on your channel.
Hell, even Zenescope entertainment has some amazing stories
While watching this i noticed at the 6:05 minute mark the Food truck has FFFood written on it, "F" being the 6th letter of the alphabet so it's 666 XD.
Here's a problem with this movie: Catholics don't pray to saints or to Mary. We ASK the saints or Mary to pray FOR us (or for whatever our intention may be). If someone had made this claim in real life, the Church hierarchy wouldn't have gone along with it.
Just putting that out there. Very good recap. :)
Thanks for bringing this movie to my attention.
FCE you do awesome work i love every video you do keep up the good work, can you do a video called FROM and thanks
Dang, I was possibly first, took a screen shot when I realized it, but took 5 minutes to realize it lol.
As a former devout catholic, i always found it weird how they put so much reverence on mary to the point of worship.
when did neegan got interested in some devil shit? all I know about him is to make spaghetti while swinging lucille
Meehan wasn’t but Winchester was obsessed lol
The imdb rating on this movie does it no justice. I thought the film was pretty good. My only criticism was the effects were a bit cheap and kinda cheesy at different times like when mary is coming out of the river in Gerry's dream and a few of the jump scares where they show marys hooded visage up close but other than that the pacing, the story the acting was all pretty good and I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I only wanted to add that the end made me feel like someone was inspired by harry potter lol. When Mary kills alice it reminded me of when Harry is killed by Voldemort as far as the horcrux symbolism is concerned as well as sacrificing himself to save everyone else but then when the final scene shows us the statue of Mary crying tears of blood it made me think they didn't want to seem too derivative and wanted to create doubt about Mary truly being vanquished. Overall its a good film and was fun to watch.
Dude I'm pausing this video and watching this movie right now! I'll be back!!
Bold strategy cotton, let’s see if it plays out 😅😂😅😂😅😂
Bold move indeed, Cotton.
Another outstanding video many thanks
Alice should have been suspicious as Soon as she SAW the the spirit woman.
St.Mary was JEWISH not ASIAN.
As to why she had an IRISH accent....
hell if i know.🤔
I had to rewind and replay a certain portion of this video, just to be certain. February 31st, eh? Now, that is a notable date!
At the 3:40 point, you say that the film begins on Feb 31st, 1845. Since when did Feb have 31 days?
It was a long year...
February 31st is the date engraved onto the kern doll after the execution, meaning the townspeople weren’t too good with dates 😂
@@filmcomicsexplained I think in the movie they explained they used a date that would never happen, to trap the soul in the doll. So it couldn't be released on an anniversary or something
Good ol john Winchester putting demons on t-shirts
Jeffrey Dean Morgan was also in "The Possession", another spookyfilm.
What a coincidence just two days ago I watched the Bishop in Tale From The Crept: Demon Knight and that made me want to watch Roswell he played a sheriff the whole series.
God protects those who don’t stray from his path.
Carey Elwes is in this movie? I gotta see it now
Its so cringy. The jumscare is hilarious. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is acting like he just wanted to get this shit over with.
Please do a video on The Neon Demon starring Elle Fanning...
That time Neegan met someone a knife, club or barbwire bat is NO help or defense against..
$150 isn't worth the gas money to drive...
While an interesting movie...I do kind of wish people would stop with the "but what if the women who were cruelly and brutally murdered for no good reason really WERE evil" because it just feels like a huge insult to the fact that the tragedy of the numerous witch hunts all over the world is that there were no witches, there were no women selling their souls to the devil and I'm personally just sick of that concept being used over and over again. I'd like to see more movies go the opposite way and focus more on the horrors the church has put people through instead of validating them and their bigotry over and over again...
A lot of what I see is that the women are innocent till they are no longer able to be innocent, after which she decides "then let me be evil"
..imagine a fire that burns but insteady of hurting, its more pleasure and hate than anything u have experienced...
9:56 Dad is not a believer.
You should do a review on *Footloose*
I don't care which one, whether the original '84 version or '11 version.
Maybe if Alice was baptized and truly gave her life to the Lord, Mary wouldn't be able to use her as an anchor to the living world.
A ad I got was valviline oil. Said you can watch them change your oil without ever leaving your car while showing a tech in front of a open hood. I haven’t been driving in a few years granted, but has changing oil changed? How far are you supposed to hang out the window?
3:41 February 31st??
Movie looks crazy
It’s wild
I didn't like it but that's just my opinion .
February 31 or 31 February does not exist in both Julian calendar and Gregorian calendar. It is used on gravestones when the date is never really known.
Definitely gonna watch this one!
Negan could banish demons by whistling
“A journalist with no integrity.”
Umm you’re going to have to be more specific lol.
Negan be smashing demon heads
It sounds like the same as Indiana Jones and the temple of doom what he is chanting @ 3:30 lol
Man this video is packed with ads
There are no short cuts...
I loved this movie. Guilty pleasure for sure. 😂
When they put the mask on her with the spikes, it reminds me of Black Sabbath
My last name is Banfield and this has me here like "wtf'?
3:38 - February 31st?
3:50 - *hanged
You think he’d salt and burn it instead of breaking it 😅
Did you say February 31st? 🤔
So it’s midnight mass with negan
The real tragedy is that doll was worth 11 million dollars..
Mommy don't know Daddy's getting hot...
Bold strategy indeed 😂
