Hiking The Haute Route | A Full Length Adventure Film through Switzerland | 4K

- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- Join my brother and I as we travel through Switzerland! The Haute Route is a 180km route from Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland. I told my brother about it, and the trip slowly evolved into a reality! After about a year of planning, booking, and pulling our equipment together we finally embarked on our adventure. This cinematic feature of the Swiss Alps shares nearly all of the most iconic locations of the Haute Route. I strove to focus on the photographic beauty of Switzerland and the Haute Route rather than the route itself, though maps are shared displaying our exact GPS navigational route. This is a hiking movie through and through! So sit back and enjoy.
In 2019, my brother and I embarked on an epic journey across Switzerland on the Haute Route. It was absolutely incredible! Together we hiked 130 miles (210km) and climbed 30,866 feet (9,408m) from Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland and other locations. This trek took us through quaint villages, beneath quiet forests, on ancient glaciers, and over massive cols.
It wasn't easy, but well worth every step! Stretching across 14 days we hiked through all kinds of weather and terrain. The Haute Route leads through the most beautiful places that I have ever seen.
Featuring maps and summaries, photography, drone footage, beautiful music and in brilliant 4K, this is my greatest project. Episode 1 is a small introduction to the film, but every hiking and travel enthusiast will enjoy it all the way through. If you do, a 👍 on the video helps my little channel immensely. Enjoy!

We're planning a trip along the Haute Route and so appreciate the effort you put into this mini-film. It's got us excited and inspired about going. Thank you.
This is just a masterpiece on so many levels. You brought heart to a demanding trek. You brought knowledge to a topic many want to learn about. And you gave it a soul that is missing in so many other UA-cam videos. Bravo Nathan and Brandon!
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and I hope you can do it too someday!
Amazing video and pictures. Thanks a lot for sharing ❤
Awesome trip and an outstanding video. Well done. And to add some balance to some of the other comments, I really enjoyed the music.
Amazing video. Keep up the good work!
You guys are amazing! Keep up the fantastic work
Wonderful experience and one you will always remember! Video nicely done too. Thanks for sharing
Fantastic film, a real pleasure to watch, thank you ☺️
Absolutely mesmerising, Thank you so much for sharing. Towards the end it was even emotional for me to watch I wonder how you must be feeling at the end of the hike @JourneywithBrandon
Cheers 🥂
This is the most beautiful fine art of Haute Route!
Why thank you so much! You can see all of the pictures on my website too, including shots that didn't make it into the movie :)

Your photography game is on point! This video is added to one of my favourite ones!
Thank you very much! There's even more on my website gallery too (see description), feel free to browse around and enjoy! There was just too much to fit into the film :)
Beautiful documentary - we're hoping to hike WHR this summer so this has been a great inspiration
I'm so glad to hear that! I made a video with some advice for walking routes in the alps, specifically from what I learned from the WHR. I hope it comes in handy! ua-cam.com/video/UNwl7tQqkRE/v-deo.html
This was an amazing video! Great shots of the mountains and scenery and your filming style was excellent. Hope to see more in the future
You will! I'm glad you enjoyed it, Phil 😎
Great vdo! I'm planning to hike haute route in summer 2021. Can't wait!!
You're going to love it! I made another video sharing planning tips that might help you get started. Your trip will have highs and lows but it will be an experience to remember :)
what a beautiful trek, what a wonderful experience!
i live in the swiss mountains, and go hiking a lot, but this is exceptional. and i'm spoiled for great views. but that sunrise view of the matterhorn still managed to bring tears to my eyes
What an awesome adventure!!!! Thank you for sharing this with the world! I viewed it with my 65" flat screen...is like I was there with you guys!
Now THAT'S how it's done! I"m glad I could take you on the journey with us :)
Congratulations for making such an amazing video! Really enjoyed!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you did :)
Loved this from start to finish, what a journey, what a film and what amazing photography!! I’ve been thinking about doing parts of the Haute route for years and you two have inspired me to get on and do it! I hope your film and photos get the wide exposure they deserve!
I'm glad to hear it! It will be an experience you will never forget. If you want a hand getting started, I made a video talking about how to plan for a trip like this.
Good luck! -B
I enjoyed every minute of your video. Can´t wait for your next piece of art!
Thank you! I'm getting ready to release Iceland soon, and I hope you didn't miss the Bahamas! It's a great diving film, I think you'll love it in the meantime. ua-cam.com/video/oxpmsfttyYg/v-deo.html
Stunning visual work! Really impressive to carry the equipment along the way, and your brother must have incredible patience. Good for both of you. We plan to do this hike as soon as possible.
He does! He carried the drone and charging equipment, and volunteered to retrieve cameras we had walked past. I owe him a lot!
You won't regret it - the route is an incredible experience :) Maybe this will help: ua-cam.com/video/UNwl7tQqkRE/v-deo.html
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed your video.
Absolutely! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Keep an eye out, I have another massive project coming up too.
Thank you for your wonderful story. What an epic adventure! We all need this trip after the end of this pandemic...
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This is fine art indeed
My wife and I did this several years back; this was a great video to relive those wonderful times during this COVID lockdown! Great video and thanks for sharing. Loved the London section also!
That's great to hear! I'm glad I included London, hopefully it doesn't turn too many people off from the rest of the film. I'm especially happy to provide a bit of relief from the lockdown :)
Just wanted to congratulate you both on completing and presenting this amazing piece of work.
I was fortunate enough to complete many of these sections a number of years ago, and you manage to capture the beauty and enormity of this landscape superbly.
Thanks again for your dedication, creativity and commitment to producing a stunning piece of work. Congratulations.
Thank you, that is very kind! I'm now further inspired to work on my Iceland film :)
Thank you for making this, what an inspirational video, I got a lot of useful info from it hile prepping for my own Haute route hike. And I am digging the pictures you took, composition and colors on point!
You're welcome! I'm glad you're going (or have gone!) on your own Haute Route, that's a great accomplishment.
If you want to see all the pictures from the trip, I have them online here: www.brandonneubert.com/product-category/europe/haute-route/
Omg! You both looks cool dude adventure is real omg! Fantastic ❤️
Hahaha why thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the movie 😎
Great pano shots! Nicely done .. Loved the photos and upbeat music especially
Thank you! I've always photographed, this was the biggest video project I've ever undertaken and I'm glad the music was enjoyable :)
@@JourneywithBrandon It made me want to take the Hasselblad XPan and Fuji GF670 if I ever get chance to go! :)
Hello great video , thank you for sharing , this is our next target . We just came back from Nepal , the Gokyo hike to be specific . We did the tour du Mont Blanc a few years back in July and ended up going through a snow storm as if it was winter , no fun , but again that’s part of the package 😊
Beatiful shots and together with the music it really creates a perfect mood. We hiked the alps 5 years ago as well and this was like a fashback! Great work!
I'm very happy to hear that, thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Excellent video. I’m speechless
That's very kind of you, thank you for your comment! It means a lot to me. I'm working on an Iceland video, it should be done in the coming months so keep an eye open!
Perfect, super, mega. Wonderful fotos
Thank you very much!
Amazing people in amazing place
Wow these are quite impressive! Good job!!!
Thank you! It's good to hear from ya - hope you're doing well dude!
Thank you for your content, the images are amazing. I hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc last year and now this is on my list once we are over COVID.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! There's lots more to come too! C19 depending, I'm considering Argentina, New Zealand, or Japan next. We'll see.
Really special video!!!! One of the best I saw on YT!!! And "grand finale" is really something. It shows how talented photographer Brandon is. As a fellow photographer I have to say: Amazing!!!!
Thank you both , for hour well spent!
Regards from
Thank you! That makes me feel fuzzy inside :)
amazing. thanks for sharing.
My pleasure!
Hi from Japan😊
I walked almost this same route in July 2004 for about 10days with my husband. It’s so nostalgic to watch your movie, every cabins and mountains look no change…Thanks you so much for sharing☺️🙏
You're welcome! Thank you for your kind comment.
Japan is high on my list to visit and hike, I hope your country is safe and can re-open soon so I can come and visit :)
Love this!
You're the best, dude 😎
An outstanding film!!
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it :)
An amazing route and edit!
Thank you very much Simon, I'm glad my efforts were worth it :)
I’m starting the HR next Saturday! Fully enthused! 🥳
Good luck, James, I'm excited for you! I hope you have a great time ✌️
Wonderful video! Great! Congratulations! I had to watch this video 3 times, I will hike Chamonix to zermatt 2023 or 2024? I hiked the TMB in 2019, It was incredible. Thanks for video.
Thank you very much! The TMB shares several legs of the Haute Route, but going all the way to Zermatt is very special. Have a great time!
Very much enjoyed your video. My son and myself were on the same trails about the same time as you. We started on the TMB and walked for six days counterclockwise from 11 0'clock to 3 o'clock until we switched to the Haute Route at Orsierres. We were at Cab. Mont Fort on Aug 1, Hotel du Barrage on Aug 3 (after Cab Prafleuri was closed due to a bed bug infestation), Cab due Moiry on August 5, & Zinal on August 6. Like you we called the remaining hike off after heavy rain coming out of Zinal on Aug 7th. We just went on to Zermatt. Really enjoyed your video as it brought back memories of our ultimate hiking summer.
It sounds like we were only a couple weeks after you! We were in Zinal on August 19th, and got to Zermatt two days later. Without a doubt, completing the TMB is on our list for the future! I'm happy you enjoyed the film and that it brought some memories of your own journey. That's what it's all about. Visit my website and shoot me an email if you'd like a print - since we were so close together on the trail I'd love to give you and your son a solid discount on a pair of prints. www.brandonneubert.com/product-category/europe/haute-route/
Great video!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Nathan has a great hat! 👍🏼
I agree, I was burned much more than he was.
Great vid and very inspiring
Thank you Thomas, I appreciate that very much!
wonderfull
This is an amazing route! I'll put this on my Bucketlist! 😁 Those Google Earth tracks are great! 😁👍 Have a great day!
I hope the tracks will help you plan the route out! I have a "how-to" video here: ua-cam.com/video/UNwl7tQqkRE/v-deo.html
See you on the trail!
@@JourneywithBrandon i'll check it out! Thanks
amazing
This is really a first class production. kudos to you guys!
Thank you! I'm trying to translate my photography into video, that means a lot 😎✌️
Thank you to you both for sharing such an amazing adventure. The content was packed full of great footage and images. The story was first rate and as a viewer you so felt the journeys emotion and that as brothers you are also great friends. The choice of music was outstanding and those final images of the Matterhorn WOW! Thank you again, you've inspired me to document my future travelling and photography trips. I wish you both all the very best of success in the future. Kind Regards Mike (A senior Olympus fanboy 📷🙂) .
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It was a huge effort both during the trip, and especially in the cutting-room. I hope you'll consider subscribing, since I'm planning on making these annual excursion films a regular thing (next stop: Japan!). My brother was a huge asset during the trip (he was the walk-back-retrieve-the-camera guy and probably did 10 more miles on the trip than I did) and his companionship was essential to our success. Also, if I inspired you to film your own future adventures, then my film has done what I hoped it would do!
Cheers!

@@JourneywithBrandon - I am very happy to subscribe Brandon (Done). I look forward to your future adventures. Q: You were using a ball head attachment early on (29min 10sec) , I didn't recognise it. I would be interested in what it was and what are the features of said kit. Many thanks in advance.
@@mikewalker3800 Ah - yes, that's the RRS PG-01 panorama head. I use it when I shoot panoramic images, as it mitigates any paralax that would result from pivoting the camera around the body (like a ball-head), rather than the actual nodal point of the lens. This particular head is made for smaller cameras like my Olympus, but larger ones are also available. I've been meaning to make a video about panorama heads, maybe this is the kick I need to actually do it!
Also, I'm glad to hear it! Welcome to the channel! I'll try to entertain the best I can 😎 Next stop is Japan!
I like the editing 👏
Thank you! This has been my biggest project ever, and it feels great to hear that :)
Congrats ! Amazing photos.. and I'm a Swiss Citizen !
I'll have to come visit you sometime! ;) Cheers!
very good work !!
Thank you! Cheers!
Moltes felicitats. Magnífica filmació i fantàstica edició.
Congratulations. Magnificent filming and fantastic edition. The best mountain film-report I have seen in recent years.
My wife and I spent an hour and a quarter enjoying the scenery of the Alps. I’ve even recognized the Grand Combin massif I reached quite a few years ago.

Moltes gràcies! M'alegro que hagis gaudit de la pel. lícula :) Tinc previst fer més, també!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the film :) I plan on making more, too!
I really enjoyed this. The cinematography was fantastic! So beautiful! I also appreciated seeing the relationship you share with your brother. What time of year was your trip?
Hi Amy, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Our trip was during mid-august. As you could see we were rained on a couple of times, but nothing devastating (except for our skipped legs near the end). However that time of year always runs that risk but other than that the weather was beautiful. I hope someday you get to do it too!
Superbe ! Au delà de la performance physique, vous avez ramené de belles images. Les cadrages sont travaillés et le post traitement réussi. Votre vidéo m'a donné envie de faire ce trek. My english is too poor to say this in english.
Je suis le frere de Brandon. Merci Beaucoup! Vous avez boison de faire ce trek. C'est excellent.
Gorgeous footage and amazing video. Great channel. A big thumbs up from a fellow creator 👍

Fabulous! I hope my film brings good memories!

Taking notes. I am planning on doing this next year.
Let me know if you have any questions! I'm happy to recommend a few resources if you need.
@@JourneywithBrandon I appreciate that. Thank you.
This video is so awesome! Thanks for doing this! I hope to walk te haute route this July.
Was wondering what the deal is with the walking poles, were you sharing a pair because one forgot to bring them?
If you do, you'll love it! I hope you get to do it :)
Haha! We both just prefer one walking stick rather than two. We bought them in Chamonix since you can't bring them on airplanes.
Great video and photos!! When was your hike? I was there in 2019--starting Aug 1 at Forclaz and we got to Zermatt on Aug 9. Got caught in a big storm all day on August 7 In Zinal. Maybe I saw you on the trail...
Lets see... it looks like we arrived in Zinal on August 18th, so we just barely missed each other by a week! We'll have to catch each other on the next trek, Rod 😎
Great video and congrats for finishing!
But you "cheated" by taking the cable car, taking easier routes around the glaciers. For the full experience you need glacier equipment. Doing that with trailrunners is only for pros. Still nice hike, keep going!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! In the future I'm planning on documenting other multi-day trips, assuming travel fully reopens again soon 😎
I do want to note that The Walker's Haute Route doesn't actually lead across or up any glaciers or demand special equipment, and technically our one crossing at the Cabane Des Dix was simply a fun side-excursion (easily done with trail running shoes).
As for the occasional cable car, I regret nothing on account of my IT band. I felt much better and lasted far longer because I took them, and the experience was far more enjoyable.
Hey Brandon, I enjoyed your video and the gorgeous scenery on Haute Route very much. Thanks for sharing your planning tips and detail itinerary with us. I am just wondering what's the name of the hotel you stayed in Zermatt that is super close to the place of sunrise? Thanks a lot!!
No problem! I'm glad you enjoyed the film :)
I recommend staying at the Fluhalp. We were able to get a place on walk-in, of course results may vary. It isn't in Zermatt proper, it's really in Sunnegga, accessible by taking the funicular at Sunnegga station from Zermatt. The 5-lakes trail is fantastic, and spending a day up there is easy :)
I'm glad the trip planning video helped you out too - I was hoping it would be!
Cheers,
-B

Great videos and PICTUREs are stunning! What filters did you use? Your photos are jaw dropping!
What month did you hike?
How did you book the accommodations? thx
Hi Natasha, thank you! You can see all the pictures on my online gallery if you like: www.brandonneubert.com/product-category/europe/haute-route/
You can learn all kinds of tips for hiking routes like the Haute Route from another video of mine here: ua-cam.com/video/UNwl7tQqkRE/v-deo.html
We hiked in August, and booked our accommodations using hostels, hotels, and AirBnB.
loved the video. how did you get the shots of you and your brother at each waypoint sign!? some kind of timer on the camera i assume?
Either that with a tripod (or flat rock), or asked someone to take it. These are common restpoints, and generally the cols were the only place we saw people during the day (aside from the start and finish).
I am preparing to hike WHR this summer and this is my favorite video so far. Watched it few times already. Could you share more details on the Airbnb you stayed in Les Hauderes? Seems affordable from your film, but I cannot find it.
I hope you've found this video then, too! Here are some tips for trips like this: ua-cam.com/video/UNwl7tQqkRE/v-deo.html
That's very kind of you, I'm so glad you've been able to enjoy it a few times! My movie doesn't do the WHR justice, I'm so excited for you to experience it for yourself. Train hard, it's no joke!
I can't link to the specific ABNB, it may not be available any more. However, that doesn't mean it's the only one there to choose from. I'm sure you'll find a great place to stay. If not an ABNB, look for a hostel to stay instead.
The way your backpack hangs from your shoulders at 8:50... ouch!!
I agree, it looks BAD right there! However we occasionally adjusted our packs throughout the trip, sometimes it felt good to let the weight off our waist for a spell and this time it happened to be on camera :)
However, it's true that Nathaniel needs a better pack for the next trip.
I'm homesick for the Alps, and binge watching all the Alps related youtube videos - this is by far one of the most beautiful, and the perfect balance of narration and soundtrack. Well done!
You're not the only one, Hannah! I'm homesick for them too. I'm glad you liked the movie! I'm producing a couple more right now, but this will always be my favorite route :)
thumbs up. the photography is superb - for me the video has the colour punched way too high. looks like you really enjoyed the hike. love the drone footage too.
I appreciate the feedback! Coloring video is still a new science to me, but I'll get the hang of it. Glad you enjoyed it!
What weather app were you using? Thank you. Nice work!
Unfortunately, I don't know! I just looked up weather radar for the area using my phone.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you :)
Fantastic l!! Were there plenty of camping spots and food? Any problem with the language?
I'm not familiar with the rules of camping on the route, we stayed in the hostels along the route. We only encountered one tent the entire time. My channel has an in depth how-to, I recommend checking it out!

Is there a way we can get in contact... me and my friends are planning to do this trail in a years time and would love some advice on planning and the routes and locations you went to!!
The best advice I can offer is to buy the Haute Route guide-book from Cicerone Press, and start with that! If you buy the Print + Digital version, it also includes GPS coordinates and pathways. However, the route is simple and easy enough that you likely won't use them, but they're nice to have. Buy it from the Cicerone website too, to ensure you get the most recent version! www.cicerone.co.uk/chamonix-to-zermatt-sixth
I've been wanting to make a video talking about how I planned this trip out, maybe this is the inspiration I need to do so. I'm excited to hear about your own trip! It's a challenging, yet fulfilling and life-changing experience. In the meantime, buy a copy or two of the book, and that will get you started without a doubt.
Also If you haven't yet, consider subscribing! There's much more to come on the channel. 😎
Hey Zach, this video was a long time coming, but here it is! How to Plan for the Haute Route:
ua-cam.com/video/UNwl7tQqkRE/v-deo.html
I may missed it, but what month did you do this trip?
I believe this was August. I have a video talking about planning this trip too if you're interested in learning more: ua-cam.com/video/UNwl7tQqkRE/v-deo.html
amazing video. thank you. I am planning to do this route end of August. Very excited.
What time of year was your trip?
August. No snow on the passes, but we were rained on frequently (as you can see), and it can come quickly.
I HIGHLY recommend buying this book from Cicerone. It gives you all the information you need, and buying the digital version provides you with GPS maps for your device (but bring a physical copy along with you too!): www.cicerone.co.uk/chamonix-to-zermatt-sixth

August. Thanks for sharing the beauty. Stay well.
You too! I'm glad you enjoyed the film. Many more are in the pipeline, too, so stay tuned! :)
I really like the video, beautiful shots. One thing though: it would be much more enjoyable without the music.
That's good feedback! Was there one song in particular that you didn't like?
@@JourneywithBrandon Kumono Kodo Trail in Japan is on my short list! Plus the O Route Torres Del Paine. I can’t wait to see what you produce next. The quality of your images is on point!
Too bad the loud (andbad) music makes it barely watchable, why do that ??
I appreciate your feedback and I'm sorry you feel that way. I personally love every song that I used, which is why they were included! Most people have also loved the music and several have even requested the track names and artists. Was there one in particular that you disliked?
As far as volume is concerned, I did my best to balance all music according to usable dialogue in each clip. If the music seems to overpower our voices it might be because of too much wind or rain and so I provided subtitles accordingly. In environments like these, sound recording is the most difficult to produce well. This is also the first film I've ever produced, so next time maybe I'll reduce the music during dialogue more. Lots of good lessons were learned for next time :)
I really wanted to see this video having seen the "How to plan and hike..." and seems like wery good fotage 4k and all. BUT the Music! it´s just horrible, flattening´, degrading, stupifying, conveing all of the inner emotions of a 8 year old child in disneyland and an utterly offence to all the otherwise beautiful landskabe and making. Well... did not really want to be so negative, the music might trigger other feeling for you than for me (im pretty sure) due to difference in age and culture i guess! All things good to you. Will take approx the same route, along a few via ferrata rutes in the summer 2024.
You'll enjoy the route, it's really a special experience. I'm not familiar with via Feratas along this particular route but if that's your thing then I might suggest the Alta Via 2 or 3 instead in the dolomites? I just completed the Alta Via 1 this year which is a walking route but climbers and VF routes are everywhere.
Producing a "film" like this takes a lot of work and music selection is one of the most difficult parts of post production. I've had both positive and negative feedback on the music I chose, but in the end I chose what I liked for each stage, and every stage is unique! Skip forward to the next and you may enjoy that music more than the previous.
Good luck on your adventure! 😎
