There are plenty of places for beginners at Piha Beach. To start with surf mid to high on the coming in tide or one hour after high to mid tide on the outgoing. Until you are paddling fit, stay in front of the surf club and keep an eye on the cross current. If you move more than 75 metres from the surf club, catch a wave in and walk back along and start again. That is the safest place on Auckland's west coast and one of the most consistent in NZ for waves. Email us if you want any further tips. info@pihasurfschool.com
