Fun fact: I have no idea if this was deliberate on the part of the filmmakers, as they are exceedingly common Russian names, but the two male leads in this movie share the names of two of the three guys who helmed Rasputin's assassination (Dmitri Pavlovich & Vladimir Purishkevich). It easily could be a coincidence but I just thought that was interesting.

On your pocahontas point: when i was a kid a descendant of pocahontas came to speak with us about her work on that movie. Apparently, disney had storyboarded a very respectful and accurate story, and she'd worked with them to make it authentic. Then they invited her back to show the reworked plot a year later, and she said it was so painful to see what they'd done she cried.
So... i mean... they didn't have to do what they did. They chose to.

Very unfortunate DX That's why I choose to watch Disney's Pocahontas as it's own thing rather than a story based off history that is painfully inaccurate. As long as we can acknowledge and respect the real Pocahontas' story then I think it's safe to watch the movie without believing anything from it as non-fiction.

About the accent...Honestly, as someone from a non-english-speaking country....This was never something that bothered me as a kid. I very early realized that they are speaking my language so that I will understand them, but in their universe they are speaking their own language. Kinda like how sometimes animals in cartoons speak our language but no humans in the cartoon understands them.....Sometimes, there were dubbers that had a different dialect than the norm, but mostly it was reserved for comic relief-characters because it would sound too funny.
I remember though, in An American Tale, they did have accents, which I think is just because they wanted to emphasise on the fact that they were immigrants.

I get what you’re saying, hence why I never got why people were mad when games like Atomic Heart have an option for everybody to be speaking in English since in-universe they’re obviously speaking their native language, it’s purely so that the player is able to understand them without having to learn an entirely new language or constantly having to read subtitles.

      Even for?
I grew up in the 90s and ALL Don Bluth's movies were greater than what disney had produced in the 80s..
While disney started its renaissance in 1989.. Don Bluth was firing on ALL cylinders. (not get me wrong Disney movies of the 90s were awesome... i just was more exposed to Fox Animation). Titan AE, An American Tales, the land before time, ANASTASIA.
In the early 90s disney was still surviving on the classics of the 50s and 60s and a few later classics (but bombs at the cinema) like Robin Hood, the Rescuer, Bednocks and Broomsticks, who framed Roger Rabbit..
the 70s and 80s were VERY rough for disney animation studios
And yes by the mid 90s Bluth's movies were on the way out (a couple of heavy bomb were key) and Disney was IN but there was a time in the early 90s were disney was still "the past" and Bluth was the cool new kid on the block.

Like the characters are in-universe speaking their native languages without a foregin accent and it's "translated" for the audience.

Saber, you're close to when Don Bluth gain notoriety. His first movies came out in the 80s, not 70s (he was still with Disney in the 70s). I actually wasn't a huge fan of Land Before Time because this was the movie that scarred my childhood. I remember seeing it on the big screen and the death of Littlefoot's mom, that killed me (I was 6). I had much preferred Oliver and Company that came out earlier that year.
I loved this movie when it came out, I actually prefer it to some of the Disney Renaissance movies (that's my hot take). I was in HS when the movie came out. It does have one of my favorite movie soundtracks too and my favorite song is Once Upon a December. Fun fact- at the time this movie was released, it still wasn't a known fact yet if Anastasia was dead yet (it was later confirmed she did die that night).

Even if this movie has sort of a meh story, it interested me into knowing more about the russian revolution (the only things I knew about it before were this movie and Animal Farm, czar/king -> communism but not how that transition ocurred).
If anyone is as lost as I was and is interested in the topic, I recommend the two parter youtube video The Russian Revolution by Oversimplified, I think it makes a good breakdown of the topic.
    Kudos!

The sing you’re humming to is journey to the past. Also the songs found wonderful in their native Russian language as well, Paris is not translated to Russian though but for the other songs it fits.

It’s sad that you don’t see this type of animation much anymore. At least, not on the same scale. Quality? That’s the debatable. But, that makes me all the more greatful, that indie animation is filling that void. Hullabaloo, for instance, has a Disney-esche style to it. I recommend Saberspark, and others, check it out. Episode 1 released months ago.

I just started watching the video and u guys r talking about the accuracy and I’d like to point out Pocahontas was a real person she was like 12 not 18/19 and John smith was in his 40s not 20s he also adopted her, took her from her home and then married her after she became a women. Anastasia was my favorite movie growing up tho 👌🏼

I love how they portey the royal family as being loved and revered when in reality Nicholas was an absolutely horrible ruler tbh. Finally the people had enough and thus the legend of Anastasia was born.
Though knowing now what really happened........yea; this movie would be rated r for violence and essentially murder
