  • Опубліковано 22 вер 2020
  • In modern battlefield challenges, the aim of advanced artillery is to improve the effect on targets along with minimizing the logistic footprint.
    The Elbit Systems ltd M454 Super High Explosive (S-HE) artillery projectile is 5 times more effective against infantry and light armored vehicles (LAV) compared to standard HE projectiles.
    Introducing a unique solution based on a pre-fragmented drogue parachute warhead, designed to detonate at an optimum height above the target.
    The projectile is compatible with all 155mm NATO 39, 45, and 52 caliber guns, designed to enable a maximum range of up to 22-28 km depending on caliber.

    I can stand by these 100%! I bought a couple for my new M777 towed artillery piece I picked up at the "Getting the fuck out afghanistan sale" the military's having right now. I bought it to tow behind my dually and for my yearly cow hunt on my neighbors farm. Just 2 rounds fired at a measly 750k a piece and I'm set on briskets for the next 6 months. I would suggest using only 1 round when hunting cow, 2 turned out to be a little.... Excessive, let's just say I have some very tender cuts of beef drying and curing but I did take out half my neighbors house and family.

    This is really good for cleaning out trenches. With the super-high velocity "shrapnel" from this shell, I'm pretty sure it will also damage vehicles and artillery.

    • @PrometheusZandski
      @PrometheusZandski 2 роки тому +4

      I think the best feature is the wide dispersed air detonation. The shock alone under the shell will kill anyone even in body armor. The fragment pattern looks to be ridiculously even so it will get trench targets that are not completely shielded by sandbags.

    • @Bob_Adkins
      @Bob_Adkins 2 роки тому +2

      @@PrometheusZandski Pretty sure the US has air-bursting MLRS too, which can pretty much wipe out a kilometer. I suppose those can't be used within a KM or 2 of friendlies.

    • @OmikronZeta
      @OmikronZeta 11 місяців тому

      Better than natural fragmenting warheads, to be sure, but this probably would not have line of sight to the bottom of a 5-6 ft deep trench, unless bursting directly overhead or very high up (which greatly diminishes the density of the pellet spread). I think the "70% as effective as cluster munitions" claim was probably for targets in the open, though even cluster munitions are of limited effectiveness against adequate trenches, as we have seen recently.

    This is brilliant. It's making a shell behave like a gmlrs alternative warhead. It's dispersing shrapnel over the widest possible area, with an optimum pattern, and with effective shrapnel velocity.
    It's doing what cluster munitions did without the dangers of live unexploded submunitions.
    The current Ukraine/Russia conflict shows why cluster munitions are necessary. The UK should withdraw from the cluster munition ban and start making new ones.

      It's not a cluster shell, it's a schrapnel shell. Cluster bombs and shells leave multiple small bombs behind that can accidentally kill civilians, while schrapnel shells spray an area with tiny pieces of metal. After the shell has exploded, those pieces of schrapnel are nothing but, well, schrapnel, meaning they can't hurt anyone anymore

    Is "S-HE" loaded with a super high-explosive, or does it just have a better design to make better use of a similar explosive found in HE shells?

    Don't they already use proximity fuse since ww2?

    • @Keimzelle
      @Keimzelle Рік тому

      A proximity fuse needs a lot of concentrated metal that distorts the earth's magnetic field. Like, an airplane or a tank.
      Not so much when you need a projectile against infantry targets.
