    Battletech was a huge let down for me, a Battletech fan... Exactly because it was so barebones. Internet sings it's praises, mostly by people repeating same argument over and over: "I waited sooo long for a Battletech game like that!" like it's supposed to cut all the discussion. I played the tabletop, am MW and Battletech veteran, I love me some wargames, and how can anyone consider this **MESS** to be good is beyond me.
    Battletech (the tabletop) has so much to offer, multiple platforms and hardware of all kinds to make the game amazing... Battletech has mechs, tanks, VTOLS, planes, artilery, infantry, for all sorts of missions. Meanwhile here, you can field just 4 mechs! Just 4 mechs! One lance is it... What tactical depth is there?!
    And sorry, Roland, but AI is beyond pathetic. That's not a match between chess masters, the AI indeed makes sure to take cover and not overheat, BUT it makes the dumbest mistake in history of Battletech, breaking RULE nr.1 of a battletech game... That rule says "DON'T EVER stretch the FORMATION"
    In Battletech game, you should always move your lance as a unit, so that all machines start engagements at the same time. If you have a mixed force of light and heavy mechs, the heavies go front, the lights move to flanks, but they keep the line, so that when exchanges happen you don't get picked off one at a time.
    You want to beat a mission in this game the easy way? Well, unless it's a mission with timed objectives, keep your lance back, scout forth with your light mech and ping the enemy, then run back to your line, and observe how entire enemy force forms a long stretched line, comming at you one at a time, getting pounded to oblivion, falling over due to fire-saturation and getting owned further on. First come either lights or vehicles. Focus Fire = dead. There comes a medium mech, focus fire that dumbass, and erase it from existance... Then comes heaavies and assaults, but at that point they already lost the edge. You don't split the formation for that exact reason, it's the FIRST lesson you learn in a wargame... And this game, a game proudly bearing a Battletech name, doesn't get that right.
    How can one claim this game offer Tactical Depth is beyond me... What tactical depth is there with just 4 mechs each mission? What tactical depth is there without artillery suport or vehicles employed on your side? What tactical where we cannot deploy things so simple as smoke screens, reconaissance, troops to hold buildings, etc? 4 mechs! That's it... just four pathetic mechs is all we are given, and when you optimize your build, you'll be stuck with pretty much same roster for the rest of the campaign. MegaMek Against-the-Bot has better campaign variety.
    The story itself is so heavily railroading players in a preset outcome, it's ridiculous! Firstly, it's not our story, and before some spastic cames out to say 'Well obviously, you're a merc, the story doesn't have to revolve around you' - let me redirect you to other Mechwarrior games. Or Arma, or whatever. Sure we are a little guy in a grand story, but in MW4:M, despite galactic politics taking their own course, we are are the main focus, our team takes contracts and decides where we go. In Arma series, the war goes it's own course, but we get to interract with civilians, meet characters in game, help them out, etc. we have the choice on our own level. This game presents you with the ENDING in the friggin INTRO?! We have no say in how the story develops, in fact even having the audacity to suggest something (In good faith) to the main character, we are being attacked and scoffed at. We are an NPC in someone else's story... why even have a pretense of mercenary company where we don't get to choose the employer? (aside from shitty repetitive generated missions that is). In character generation we pick our origin, where we came from, an obvious nod to the fact people have their preferences and beloved factions in the universe. How does that translate into gameplay? It just gives you a starting mech and a stat... that's it. I'm playing as a Davion loyalist, or at least I thought I was, untill the game forced in my character's mouth a line saying that he just came from Federated Suns, has no memory or loyalty towards place of his origin and that literaly comes nowhere into play. And there was so much opportunity! I mean imagine a dilema at some point where you have to overcome a particularly hard mission, if you were of a shady background, let's say you get an option to contact smugglers who deliver a bunch of small vehicles on the planet behind the enemy lines... or use a contact in Liao spy network to get intel or deactivate static defences for few rounds... or as a noble, you can hail a friendly merc corp and invoke an old deed they owe your family... whatevs, seriously so many aspects could have been vital to this game... this whole time I've been thinking why we don't drop the damn pretense and play as Kamea Arano in the first place, like we played with Drussari in MW4? Oh right, because the whole marketing for this claimed what an awesome classic merc adventure it would be in huge open world of Inner Sphere during a succession war, but instead we got a railroading story in a made up backwater zone of the space.
    They had a massive kickstarter campaign. I also backed the kickstarter expecting much. They exchanged designes and models with MWO team and everything seemed to be amazing! But then, the same people, mind you, opened the YT channel called HyperRPG (yes, Harebrained studios) where they ran a tabletop RPG with almost exactly same story we later seen in the video game, it's called Death From Above. And I wondered why the game is so lacking in features, meanwhile people responsible for it burned the budget on a UA-cam pop culture media channel the likes of which Nerd Crew makes fun of, yet no BT fanboy ever brought it up. They had budget, assets and models from MechWarrior Online, and that's it?

      @coldwave007 5 років тому +3

      It's because of how they implemented dice rolling. Each time you miss, the game starts to weight the dice in your favor. Sine ACs tend to be the biggest weapon, it fires first and gets no weighting, so purely random. The follow up shots go down the weapon tree, to the smaller weapons, which then get weighted. Yay, ML spam is even better. :/

    What if in Battletech *both the enemy and your own team* can eject from a heavily damaged 'Mech or flee from a bad situation? In the game there can be a separate stat called "Loyalty" and it determines a pilot's limit. Loyalty would increase as you do more missions with your squadmates but you can lose loyalty if you are in too many dangerous missions.
    With a proper loyalty system pirates should be easy prey (well, *easier* prey.)

    My subjective problem with permadeath in games like XCOM is that it often depends on factors outside of your control. Like in Enemy Unknown: a soldier dies, another goes crazy and shoots a third one, then jumps into the jaws of an alien. To me that's less having to deal with the consequences of your mistakes and more the game going "fuck you lol, now deal with it".

    I do understand your annoyance with Battletech and all points are valid, but some of the good stuff they've done is amazing, such as how customization works for mechs, its a brilliant mix of classic tabletop and hardpoint system with some slight sugar in the form of modules that increase melee damage or make it so you can tank an AC round to the face.

    Design/Technology/Art is a pretty good wheel theory for game programming. I tend to favor design over either by a pretty big margin, though good design/technology can be an art in itself. My favorite games tend to innovate or refine from a design aspect, but the very best games usually have art incorporated in some significant way I'm probably not acknowledging

    BattleTech is what got me interested in the entire franchise. So, credit where it's due, it is a good entry-level game. That said, it does lack longevity at the moment; though that may change with DLC's (which I wouldn't gamble on). And, yes, it is due to the lack of AI prerogatives outside of "kill player under all circumstances", as well as the CONSISTENT dropping of reinforcement waves in each mission!!!

    100% right about Battletech and Xcom. I hate when I lose an xcom soldier because of how invested I get in them the longer I have them. After so many missions I customize them and make them a unique person. So when they die I dont only lose one of my best soldiers i lose someone I got invested in. In Xcom 2 with bonds and everything its even more devastating. In Battletech I lose someone and I reload because the game is set up in a way where losing them means I lose my infinitely more valuable mech they were piloting. Which of course cripples my game and cause me to slog through until I get a proper replacement. I dont care if one of the dumb random events makes one my mechwarriors leave me for another company. Its annoying, but at least they dont take my precious money or gear.

    I pumped 50 plus hours into battletech before I even marginally got good, before I got any mechs that felt good, And before I even started having genuine fun, Honestly with a fun curve THAT fucking heavy ive picked it up and put it down several times, something I dont do with games often, Like I am bitter towards a game that I want to like, but between the by the numbers story and the unrealistic AI, Coupled with using the same mechs over and over..I'm bored. I can't even have different colors for my individual mechs, and for a game that has lancemates so fucking similar to one another (besides their preferred fucking pronouns, because when I think of apocalyptic tier warfare I think FUCKING GENDERFLUID) that I genuinely can only tell who's who, by what fucking gun they carry , the mech selection is so samey it fucking hurts. And the gameplay os fun, I just wish there was more of a reason for me to play it.
    There is never a reason to fall back and leave a mission, because you'll lose money, Save scumming is ALWAYS the right choice (barring the one and only time I had a pilot get fucking one shot from across the map, And she ended up having the weakest kill history so I let it happen) and really the only thing you end up risking in the end is repair costs, because who's gonna lose a heavy mech and just eat the loss? Oh thats right, fucking nobody because the alternative is to use a shitty mech instead, OR fucking grind for HOURS like its a god damned MMO.
    No thanks.

    To me Battletech is to XCOM Enemy Unknown what its sequel hopefully is to XCOM 2. Enemy Unknown was a perfectly fine game but XCOM 2 just blows it out of the water with about two dozen changes spread across the different arenas of play. Like, in EU you were just killing aliens evrry mission. That was the goal and everything that came at the end of the mission like new research options was a side effect. XCOM 2 allowed you to be proactive in what your broad campaigns goals were. I hope the Battletech sequel does the same. Like, imagine if you could actually trick out your favourite mech with Ferro Fibrous armour but you needed to jump through some specific hoops to get it done instead of just getting one upgrade to fall into your lap or paying for it. Or what if your ship upgrades required you to hunt down parts in various regions instead of just going full C-Bills on a few missions. In XCOM EU/EW there weren't really any goals you could specifically set, you were just snowballing and Battletech is the same.

Thing is, I play skyrim while understanding its god damn context and wholistic context of TES as a franchise. Every game puts SOMETHING to the table and neither one is perfect. Arena - best antagonist; Daggerfall - true old school rpg/dungeon crawler; Morrowind - most complete TES experience with unconventional World; Oblivion - balance of gameplay, rpg elements and amazing world design with outstanding side quests; TES Adventures: Redguard - the best story of all TES games by far; and Skyrim - FEEDBACK (you feel the effects of fireballs that you cast and damage your weapons do), action/power fantasy concept with a blooming modding community. The only reason that I still occasionally play heavily modded skyrim is because I'm so much into elde scrolls LORE and mythos. The Lore itself is so fucking genius that there's so much materiel for immersion and imagination. Other than that, Skyrim is the weakest game in the whole franchise and that's what those fanboy children don't understand...

    Yea heres the thing though: Skyrim was made in 2011 and before. The game doesnt suck at all lmfao it revolutionized elements of gaming. Sure it was a hack n slash, but the base game can always get changed with mods. Even the base game, which was most the Skyrim I played, on Xbox, is amazingly fun. It looked and felt 100x better than oblivion gameplay wise. Sure, the base game hasn't aged well, with especially way too many scripted events getting boring after a few hours. But it has such a charm, atmosphere, and style of play that is simply unmatched in most games. Plus the DLC, especially Dragonborn, was awesome.

    Battletech feels like a bare bone but good start to something that could be great. It reminds me of Mech4. With mech4 you had an okay game but nothing great. Blackknight you had more of the same and noting much. Then you get mech4 mercs. Then shit got real. I think the battletech game is at the mech stage. The expansion that's come out feels like a black knight thing. more of the same with something else. I'm waiting for something big to happen.

    Battletech - meh, I was more excited about re-release of Metal Fatigue on GOG than this.
    And yeah, RDR2 was so overrated it wasn't even funny.
    I was playing RDR1 GotY for warmup before sequel got released, then played some RDR2 for like 10-15h and... come back to RDR1. That sequel sounds great on paper but it's boring. And I'm not some kind of goldfish with short attention span with ADHD or else. No memorable characters (they couldn't beat gravedigger from RDR1), no memorable missions, forgettable camp-filler sections...

    • @tastycookiechip
      @tastycookiechip 4 роки тому +1

      Damn man sounds like you completely missed the point of the game. It was everything a RDR1 fan wanted AND more it was the perfect sequel. If anything it was too casualised in parts and needed more immersion and survival features. Overall amazing story and game tho.

    I'm not sure why you liked the story of Subnautica or why you wanted to leave at the end. Your PDA tells you at the start of the game that the resources you're using to build cost so much money that if you survive you're going to be made a slave for the rest of your life because you'll never pay it off. And all the PDAs you find in the game paint a picture of a society so far up its own ass with political correctness that every conversation is 90% ass-kissing and apologizing to each other, and yet people are still greedy, racist, and entirely self-centered trash people. Why would your character want to go back to that?

    what are you talking about battletech was great, It incorporated many features that where intermittently present throughout the franchise. and your lancemates do matter, they often drive dialogue driven events and can even unlock some nice perks, some of the people you can recrute are only found in special events. I mean yea its limited and would have been better if you could command more than 4 mechs, but it surly wasn't the worst game of the year by far. Leave that to the trashy like of EA and activision
