Even playing Warhammer 40k tabletop roleplaying games can be painful thanks to their British heritage. Ever played Dark Heresy? Well, the best way to achieve accuracy with firearms in that game is spraying full auto, all the time, because it just gives you a flat +30% chance to hit things, with a chance to get more hits on top of that if you roll well. Which arguably doesn't even suit the 40k universe from a style perspective, since most of the most iconic weapons (boltguns, lasguns) aren't even fully automatic. To Fantasy Flight's credit, they did fix the mechanic in later 40k-themed RPGs, like the cool-as-fuck Chaos-themed Black Crusade game.
Ahem, I wasn't 10... I was 12! Shit, that makes it even worse. This video was a fucking blast. Exactly the breakdown of weapons that I'd have no chance of contesting with, even if I weren't a Canadian. This game's failure to appeal to gun-nerds reminds me of Driven's failure to portray open-wheel racing. Why they would target audiences guaranteed to call them on their bullshit, who knows.
Black is probably the only piece of media in existence whose weapon innaccuracies actually make me like the game more. I mean we're talking about a game where 1 quarter of any given gun is composed of Picatinny rails and a game where a 30 round STANAG holds 100 rounds. It's so ridiculously stupid that it loops back into being charming.
As the person who wrote the IMFDB article, Black is a very, very silly game. However, it's like watching a parakeet trying to cheer up its owner: it has no fucking clue what it's doing, but it's kind of charming.
Criterion makes a racing game more inspired by Hot Wheels than actual cars and an FPS more inspired by air soft guns than actual firearms. It kind of makes sense. Why they marketed it to gun nerds and made it all brown and blurry is truly a fucking mystery though.
I've never played Black, but I've gotta say, the Depth of Field rant was on point. I feel the same way about head-bobbing in first-person games. Yes, our heads move up and down while we walk, but our eyeballs do this amazing thing where they swivel in their sockets to compensate for the motion. I'm constantly wondering if the people who all say 'Head-Bob makes a game more realistic' have to live with some kind of incurable inner-ear infection that that makes their vision bounce drunkenly whenever they move, in which case... How do you live that way? Most of us don't have to do that, you know. I'm fine with the camera bobbing up and down when I'm sprinting or something, but for general movement? Just... no.
EXACTLY! "Real life" does have head bob, but "real brains" compensate automatically! Why does every video game hero have such terrible health problems?!
Killing Floor 1-2, Rainbow Six 3, Swat 4(Mostly for non lethal gear), Red Orchestra 2(WW2 firearms), and if you like RPGs New Vegas has a good roster of weapon models, even if they habitually load them with the wrong ammunition.
Fallout New Vegas has some of the worst weapon models of a "good" RPG I've ever played. the American 180 has no front sights, the Service rifle looks like all the worst aspects of the early AR-10's and AR-15's. Any gun in New Vegas based even remotely on an actual firearm that wasn't used in the wild west looks horrid. That being said, the actual fallout guns look fucking awesome, I love the Weathered 10mm pistol and always will. 12.7mm SMG on the other hand? Not so much, that gun reminds me of BLACK.
@I Twine And just because you made me laugh in the worst way possible, I'm gonna post your full review for Wolf: The New Order, word-for-word as it is presented on Steam. (steamcommunity.com/id/IUseTwine/recommended/) "Recommended 35.8 hrs on record For a regular gamer this game is great. Action is amazing, gunplay is great, story isn't bad. 16 Chapters of pure, unbridled nazi killing action. For a perfectionist like myself this game is awful. I had to replay the levels around 4 times (which gets seriously annoying) to complete both timelines, collect all collectables, unlock all skills, and find every secret. Do not buy if you wish to 100% this game (the amount of time it shows I've played is how long it took to 100% the game.)" The word "collectibles" is miss-spelled in this review. *"For a perfectionist like myself"* ...I guess it takes one insufferable person to know another, _fancy that._
@@xmm-cf5eg How do you dislike the service-rifle for not being a perfectly designed AR-15 platform rifle, but like the Bethesda-made original Fallout weapons like the 10mm pistol? That thing is an oversized piece of shit that would never be manufactured, much less the U.S militaries standard-issue handgun like Fallout 3 and 4 depict it. Obsidian was pretty decent with their firearms for an RPG, *much* better the Bethesda was with Fallout 3 and 4.
"Not that I'm complaining, one black is more than enough." I don't care about much intensely, but that quote will likely stick out as my favorite out-of-context. I stumbled upon your Enter The Matrix video a few months ago and have been a fan since. This video was quite the lovely surprise, especially as someone who hardly knew anything about Black and considered snagging an Xbox copy for mad cheap. A quaint reminder of the 00's edgy "shoot the foreigner while wearing sunglasses in the dark" aesthetic, but glad to know I'd be wasting my five bucks. Thanks! Also, do you think you'll ever talk more about the Burnout games?
Another mention of "Secret Service: In Harm's Way"! You like that game more than you admitted back in the day, methinks. As do I. One of my guilty pleasures.
TFBtv should let you do a "best video game" guns video. Then you can rant about the inaccuracies while showing the real version along with clips of the ingame model. Would be awesome video
I loved Black, back when it came out. In my defense, I was 22, didn't know what a real gun looks like, and I had my rose tinted Criterion glasses on that came with the BurnOut hypetrain. Your half hour of valid points sums up perfectly why I had to quit replaying it after only a few minutes a couple of months ago. I... just... couldn't. That game is so wrong. XD
What grinds my gears is when games make an MP5 look like a G3 in perspective, or when games don't bother to animate the end of a belt of ammunition in a LMG model.
It's not that they get them mixed up, but the perspective and the FOV make an MP5 look like a G3 or an HK33 in some games. Raven Shield is one such case, Black is another.
@@redcoatgaming4141I know it's been 6 years but they get mixed up becuase they are almost the same gun, just in different calibers. An mp5 is just a baby g3, if you stretch it out it almost looks like one.
At the time, the premise sounded great. A first-person shooter that makes you feel like you're in the best Hollywood action movie shootouts of all time. That's exactly how I remember them advertising it. Problem is, you felt like an actor taking part in a movie shoot, shooting scenes that you'd already gone through dozens and dozens of times already. The whole scripted nature of each levels big explosive set pieces and enemy death animations made everything feel like some highly choreographed target practice course.
4:47 They're trying so hard to show the bullets have left the casings, just look how close they fly twords you. Great. But the primers remain undented.
>Criterion is British so they get a pass on shitty weapons >Here are some of the best weapons in video games ever: *lists multiple games created by British/European developers* The Black devs didn't fuck up weapons because they're Europeans, but because they got lazy.
Graphic Designer #1: Ok, we're done with these guns in a Modern Shooter Graphic Designer #2: Wait, they don't modern enough Graphic Designer #1: You're right! Hmmmm, how can we make it more modern? Graphic Designer #3: *From the corner full of Weed smoke* How about....we add...attachment rails to all the weapons everywhere. Graphic Designer #1&2: GREAT IDEA!!
The thing that triggers me the most is how the Uzi magazine remains in the magwell for a split second after he hits the mag release before inexplicably propelling itself out of the magwell with more force than the game's lazily ejected shell casings.
The entire game was made to be detailed in the "As many polygons as possible" way, not the "Let's make this realistic" way. Which means the developers just turned 13 when they developed this.
Hah, I loved this game as a kid, but that was almost assuredly because I mainly played on PS2 and I hadn't played many "realistic" shooters. I went back and played it a year or two ago and holy shit it's bad. Still have fond memories of it, but it's hard to play when the levels just go on for way too long with no payoff. Also your writing is just wonderful. Hope you continue to grow!
I would bet money that their thought process was pretty much: "All right guys, how do we make our game's guns stand out from every other big FPS on the market?" "Well, we could cover them with those square things that some guns have to make the viewmodels more complicated. Remember how cool the machine gun in Half-Life 2 looked?" "YES! FUCKING GENIUS! Okay, nailed it. Moving on."
For me, one of plenty of games that did firearms very well was Insurgency: Sandstorm. God the weapons in that game are great to use. They feel satisfying to use, they have a good punch to them, and they're...mostly realistic. There are certainly some hiccups though, like the extended and drum magazines. Plenty of the extended magazines look pretty bad and it doesn't help much either that most of the extended magazines and the drum magazines have too low of a capacity to them. Sure, there is the game balance argument there but come on, you're telling me a stretched out STANAG magazine that looks like it could hold at least an extra 15 rounds really only holds 5 extra rounds compared to the standard M4/M16 mags. I also have a problem with the light and heavy armors in the game. I feel like those armored vests should provide better, more significant protection against most of the various different rounds in the game than what the game currently has for them; especially for the heavy armor.
In the UK we generally view firearms as these mystical, magical, death-dealing weapons of mass destruction rather than the practical tools they really are. Most people here get their exposure to guns from media, which leads to all these stupid misconceptions and myths.
The PS2 hasn't generally been very well-known for its library of first-person shooters, and that shocking reality just slapped me in the face like a cold piss-soaked sock after hearing that some people actually consider Black as one the system's finest. Are PS2 fans really that vapid or is the world warping around me? Timesplitters 1 and 2 are 6th Generation interpretations of Goldeneye/Perfect Dark in most ways that matter, with some thematic twists to them. Multiplayer-wise they still represent some of the most entertaining FPS games the PS2 has to offer, although there is little reason to bother with that version of TS2 unless you really don't own an Xbox or a Gamecube. Red Faction is perhaps one the closest thing resembling a Half-Life-esque single-player sci-fi shooter on the system. That is at least how people usually describe it, but I have my reservations about that. If nothing else, it does stand out with its dynamic terrain deformation which even comes into play in multiplayer matches. It does beg the question of what was stopping Volition from implementing a complete destruction system on the 7th Gen installments incorporating both buildings and geography if a goddamn PS2 could handle the less intense part of that concept with negligible performance/memory costs. I'll let it slide for now. Cold Winter might be an occasionally sluggish and lagging mess on the PS2, but given its technical and (marginally) greater mechanical ambitions in contrast to Black it makes perfect sense. Again, multiplayer is here (including bots), and I can only assume from memory that the arsenal doesn't make you want to stab yourself with a spoon. Being somewhat stealthy is at least a partial possibility and chopping up corpses with a machine gun can offer some amusement. Even with its highly non-compulsory and unlockable FPS Mode, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando makes for a surprising no-brainer as far as far superior choices of shooters to Black are concerned. No, it wasn't exactly built with first-person in mind and platforming will most likely suffer as a result, but at least you will be playing an actual great fucking game. Up Your Arsenal is obviously not a bad choice either and with the presence of couch (and, once upon a time, online) multiplayer what's not to like? There is a lot more to mention, but I could just leave all the other highly enjoyable multi-platform offerings on the table (Deus Ex, Future Perfect, NOLF, XIII, Agent Under Fire and Nightfire to name a few) and it would already be good enough reason to believe that Black-fans live in a fucked fantasy world. (Don't take that last statement too seriously... or do it anyway, because I stopped giving a shit a long time ago.) [Edited a slight word omission error at 2:46PM, 2017-08-23]
My Remington 870 super mag has been going strong for 10 years. I've had no problems. As for best glock in a game, in Project IGI it was a beast and felt useful. In Rainbow six raven shield glock was a decent representation. It was also really good in Payday 2
Favorite Beretta: Insurgency Favorite Desert Eagle: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Favorite Glock: Payday 2 Favorite Magnum: Far Cry 3 Favorite SPAS-12: Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 Favorite Remington: Battlefield 3 Favorite AK-47: Saints Row 2 Favorite M16: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Favorite MAC-10: Firearms: Source Favorite Uzi: Tie between Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Far Cry 2 Favorite MP5: 007: Nightfire Favorite G36: Army of Two trilogy Favorite P90: Counter-Strike series Favorite M249: Insurgency Favorite WA2000: Hitman series By the way, I enjoyed Black. Sure it's not exactly "gun porn," I still enjoyed it as a dumb action game.
Airsoft grenades. AIRSOFT. GRENADES. I ... geez. It reminds me of some of the moments from Ghost in the Shell SAC. At one point I remember Motoko saying breezily, "If you're afraid you're gonna overpenetrate, just think on your feet and make a judgment call!" Yeah, it's not like a special police unit selects every weapon and round type specifically with overpenetration in mind. -_- Just because it's fictional in Japan/UK doesn't mean it's fictional entirely, you dummies...
I didn't understand 3/4 of what was said in this video (Guns are almost impossible to get in Romania). That said I still loved it. Now that I think about, there's a fun irony in the fact that one of the games with the best weapons modelling (Secret Service) was developed in a country where they're extremely hard to get a hold of, LOL.
It's not so much "gun porn", but "what-Hollywood-thinks-guns-are-like porn". I remember the reviews criticizing the "half a magazine to the chest to kill an enemy but there's location damage for the headshot" as a dumb way to pad the game with artificial difficulty/trying to make the gameplay "deeper" but without really offering that reward for the skill. It's a console game, it's made with lack of precision in mind, except for spread at range I've never had an issue with going for the head rather than the chest. There's no "skill" in avoiding the direct fire if half of the cover elements explode in a ball of fire. It's not so much that the game has hard sections but that many times you can only see the muzzle flash and not the enemy it's coming from. You shoot back at the flash but what the hell are you hitting? A grey concrete block? Grey metal pipe? Grey fatigues worn by the enemy? The enemies had poor AI and I remember this being excused as "it's just a dumb shooter based on dumb Hollywood action movies!" so the mowing down of dozens of brain dead goons was forgiven. A lot of stuff was indeed taken from the movies, such as the excessive metallic clicking.
The glaring inaccuracies of the firearms in Black to this day still aggravate me to no end. Thank you for highlighting them. Also excellent choice of in game weapons. One of my favorite video game weapons is the Raptor Magnum .357 aka the Desert Eagle .357 in 007 Nightfire on the PS2. The two tone finish, the LAM, the accurate cycling of the slide, and the punchy sound effect always hits the spot.
I like what you have to say. Saw your Half Life 2 video. You're right and you make good points. With this one though, you're missing something important. The appeal of this game is exactly how ridiculous it is. It isn't the best game, but it's enjoyable for just how ludicrous it is.
Imagine the possibility of checkpoint Charlie-style steam regional disclaimers. "Attention! You are now leaving motion blur zone Внимание! Вы покидаете зону моушн блюра Sie verlassen die Motionblurzone"
Nightfire had a SPAS-12 if I recall correctly. I remember it being pretty fun to use, just like TWINE you can switch between pump action and semi auto. The only problem is that the stock is folded up - because of course it is. Rainbow Six Siege has a pretty nice SPAS-12, with the stock extended and the gun in semi auto.
I played perfect dark zero (the second game, can’t remember at the moment) and used the mp5 in that game, which basically due to a bug, when scoped became a semi auto marksman rifle.
Got super excited when I saw you had a new video. Even more so when I realized you were covering BLACK. I was so damn excited for this game, with my young teen-self buying into all the hype. I was mainly pumped for the environmental destruction. I remember Criterion stating that you could blow apart an entire level, if you had enough ammo. That each bullet would physically deform the world. Boy, was I disappointed. And really, the only game to offer the feature seems to be the upcoming Crackdown. Loved your coverage of the firearms. A suggestion? Perhaps do a "Tales of the Gun" style episode- a history and review of video game firearms? As a fellow hoplophile, I'd be quite excited to see something like that from you. Keep up the awesome work, dude.
The shit about wear and tear on plastic is doubly dumbfounded because it should be very apparent even from cheap airsoft guns that ARE plastic...even cheap plastic isn't painted... God dammit, some higher grade airsoft guns go to painstaking detail about the exteriour of their models, my E&L-74 uses parts MADE in an AK factory that makes the real thing, including original wood furniture and folding stock as well as some steel exteriour parts with the only real departure being the working parts obviously. The pistol grip is even made from plum colored bakelite ffs. And most G-36 models even use similar nylon reinforced polymeres nowadays. Jing Gong is a chinese brand that released a pretty affordable, plastic G36C(and later other models) that never the less was reliable and became quite popular...and over the years they actually upgraded the production quality and materials subtly, with no fanfare or increase in retail price, tho I have never found an airsoft replica that replicated the shitty mold lines that I found in my service rifle back when I served in the german army. They sand them down too well, and there was a circular pattern on the top of the handguard that I can't quite figure out how it got there...but it was there and I never found anyone replicating it XD But hey, I found some airsofters trying to give a "used look" to Polymere guns by coating them in silver paint first, then coating that black, then chipping off some edges...funnily enough they get laughed out of the room when they present their creation because most airsofters, atleast the ones I know of, are actual gun nerds, who happen to understand that shooting people with real guns is only fun for a limited time... On a different note, I didn't quite find the unrealistic portrayal of guns in Black to be that annoying. Yes they are not realistic AT ALL, but they weren't meant to be. The main focuses where on making shooting the gun feel awesome, an over the top, glorified portrayal of firearms. Yes, they don't make a true gun nerd nut because there, realism in operation is more important, but the same way porn portrays unrealistic scenarios to get people to fuck, this game portrays unrealistic guns as awesome and over the top... Wether that sits well with people or gets the desired outcome is another point entirely. I did enjoy Black back in the day, but I don't obsess over it
Yeah, the MP5 in this game also has a reciprocating charging handle and the charging handle also magically locks in the up position so you can slap it...magically. Recently Far Cry 3-4 did something similar with the charging handle magically flying back in the lock position
dude i really appreciate you like the shotgun from 007 TWINE for the n64, that's literally implanted in my mind as one of the coolest video game spas12, the sound and pump sounds are still good today. and To be fair there are legit modifications you can make to the mac 10 to have a side folding charging handle like that but the way they modeled it in this game looks really goofy, an authentic rendition of that is in rainbow six vegas 1 and 2 aswell as cod black ops 1 when you add an optic them
man your stuff about the guns is so true. you're the only game channel I've ever seen that critiques it. it is so infuriating to that no channels ever mention this stuff
I had a moment during the gun breakdowns as I was eating my pizza rolls where I felt an absolute kindred with you as a video game enjoyer and gun nut. Two things though. First, Remington as a manufacturer isn’t bad, one of their rifles had a safety issue (yes, I understand that’s catastrophically bad with a gun.), their 870-series shotguns are world renowned. Second, you reeeeeeeally need to read the Monster Hunter International series by Larry Correia if you like gun porn. Just trust me, you’ll thank me when you do.
Remington's quality has been on a decline for years, even the 870 was affected. World renown is a funny thing - it's often based on decades old information. Like Doc Marten's boots, modern ones are just not as good as they used to be. Also, they didn't just have a problem with a safety issue. The R51 handgun was complete garbage. There's a reason they had to go through bankruptcy.
Same here, they're animated really well and they did a great job making the sound effects, and the high damage from even the weakest pistols makes them all feel dangerous and powerful. Its refreshing to see a game handle pistols as more dangerous than flicking a rubber band and I wish more gamed did that. My favorite glock is probably the one from GTA 4, though. the physics are so nice.
I grew up with FEAR but gotta be honest guns in FEAR are garbage, terribly modelled and terribly animated, Black, despite being unrealistic has way better gun models and animations.
Thank god for videos like this. Black was considered an overly marketed, bloated-budget imitation of quality FPS when it came out on the internet and on message boards surrounding PC FPS games. It was so highly advertised that the TV commercials were permeating seemingly every single channel. The hype was massive for the game, it was hard not to think it was going to be amazing when you saw the commercials before release, but when it came out, it was somehow behind the times and so cookie cutter and bland, with literally nothing else going for it than "pew pew go boom". I swear to god the fake nostalgia for this game is literally based all around the pre-release hype, it's almost like its late 2010s, early 2020s fans never actually played the game, they're just sitting around in a 2005 time warp, still only watching the TV commercials and living within that pre-release hype. It's the "Transformers" of video games, you can't buy quality and you can't budget memorability.
You know what? I'm gonna check another, positive review and see what the reviewer has to say. Okay... Pros: - similar to an arcade game, with focus on only a few mechanics - special effects - exaggerated sounds of guns - the music like something from a 90s action flick - setpieces from movies - polished map design - non-obtrusive tutorial - action-packed - well-balanced difficulty - challenging final level - short length adequate for a retro gamer - shooting "dramatic and satisfying" - good controls - completly focuses on shooting Cons: - nonexistent story - boring unlockables - no multiplayer
The G36 has always been a sought after gun in games but the only representation it seems to get is the G36C variant, which is cool, but you can only see the same design over and over again before it's bland. COD MW3 introduced the MG36, which was ok but not like the full length model or the K model that I've always wanted
You forgot to mention that half of the magazines in those guns are somehow spring-loaded and eject (and i mean EJECT) at the speed of sound just by pushing mag release. Killing Floor 2, now that's gun porn.
I just noticed that the player flicks his thumb to eject an Uzi mag, despite that fact that the Uzi's very noticeable mag release is modeled on the gun where it should be.
The Glock 17 & 18C (GF17 & GF18 in game) in 007 Quantum of Solace is probably my favorite glocks. Even the 18 gets a full chrome gold paintjob ala COD4 in the multiplayer mode.
The Specialists had a solid Glock. Between all the guns being able to tear shit up, the exaggerated recoil, and wall banging through the paper thin drywall of Hammertime you felt pretty dangerous having the thing.
@@jeremyallen5974 It's not supposed to be Rainbow Six. All the guns are at least fun bc you can slow pause and empty the mag at fisticuff range. And pistol rounds still penetrate multiple surfaces. Compared to Counter Strike where center mass just isn't a thing and anything not 5.56 or 7.62x39 is a less lethal round.
Not really into guns myself but I think there was a G36C in Modern Warfare 3. Only sticks in my memory because it was crap (in the game). And there was a WA2000 in MW2, which I only found out recently was an oddity because of how few of those rifles were actually made. And really, the most "realistic" shooter I've ever played was Rainbow Six Vegas 2, it did keep chambered rounds if the mag wasn't empty, actually I think it kept those mags exactly and just cycled back to them once you reloaded enough times. But I can certainly appreciate that for someone who knows their firearms, a grossly inaccurate representation of them would be annoying. I'm amazed you manage to make such a long video out of it though. Impressive.
Even though i have never fired a gun, i was really put down by all the weird stuff this game pulled out on me every time i played it on the original Xbox. Why would you need all those rails on the guns? Aren't rails supposed to hold scopes and such? Why did you unfold the stock every time you pull out your MP5? It gets really annoying when you are just changing weapons in the middle of a combat. Or the fact of how inaccurate are almost all your weapons after 5 feet of distance, along with the horrible sound design that doesn't let you know where enemies are or where are they shooting you from. Thank you for pointing out the annoying motion blur, because that was really annoying while playing, specially since i'm one of those idiots that completed the game on the highest difficulty, and let me tell you, what a horrible experience it was. There was no real payoff for completing the damn thing except for the "M16 with grenade launcher". The whole time what i thought was: "Man, this game really looks unfinished and unpolished". I don't understand how there is people that actually consider this game some kind of "timeless jewel" or "diamond in the rough" over there in the west. I mean, i understand people here on South America really liking the game, since we are like 10 years back in time around here, and people is generally stupid around this parts, but, over there? Where is a lot easier to get a better game and better way to play it? Are they insane?. Anyway, that was a really good rant men, i been watching some of your videos, and i started with the Half Life 2 video, wich by the way, you would go on a killing spree if you saw how much people in the spanish community loves and sucks Half Life 2's dick. I was wondering, what are your thoughts on games like Transformers: War for Cybertron or Area 51? Do you plan on making a review of Doom 3? Because that game gets a lot of bad talk when in fact it has a lot of redeeming qualities. Are you going to make a Halo 2 review?
I talked about Doom 3 a lot in my review of Doom 2016. I will definitely cover Area 51 some day, and I have a big video in the works that will cover all the Halo games (up to Halo 4, which is when I abandoned the franchise).
I knew you were planing on doing something with Area 51! And i think i know what are going to be some of your criticisms of Halo 4, because i think you are going to point out the many problems that game has on whole design level, that almost nobody point out when talking about it, seeing how you go for the facts when talking about the game design. You know? Something funny about playing videogames in the third world, is that since they are a luxury, you have to go for old games, and seeing how many modern games are made, turns out were better playing old but good games that run on low requirements for the great majority.
I actually own an AR with 2 "forward assists" (they're the actual parts for FAs but are actually bolt releases). It's from a company called Cobalt Kinetics; good ARs but they're a on the expensive side.
I disagree with the people saying that Black is the best FPS on PS2. It's really not. Bar none, Timesplitters 2 is the best FPS on the system. Followed closely by Timesplitters Future Perfect. Cold Winter is probably a strong contender in the same category as Black, with a "realistic" setting and modern firearms. There's also Urban Chaos Riot Response, which was a blast. I've heard that Tribes Aerial Assault is damn good too, but I've never played it myself. Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 (Subtitled "Revolution" on PS2) also had decent ports, though nothing that comes anywhere near the PC versions. UT doesn't come anywhere near the amount of content the PC version had (Even on release) and gets pretty choppy when you splitscreen with more than 2 players. Q3 Revolution is excellent and includes a ton of the content from Q3 and Q3 Team Arena, but the loading times are horrendous (40+ seconds). I personally still liked playing Black though, but I was more forgiving back in the day. I was definitely less obsessed with accurately modelled guns. But I could swear that there was an hit box issue with the game though, where it was impossible to get headshots on enemies while they're in their stagger animation from being shot elsewhere. Am I misremembering that? You didn't bring it up in the video, which makes me unsure.
I wasn't sure myself so I didn't say anything in the video. I thought that they might have invincibility frames after getting hit, which is why they twitch around but don't actually die?
That might be the case. I guess the rationale is to not allow easy kills from spraying, by always requiring you to spend the full amount of bullets to kill if you don't immediately hit the head, but in effect it just makes it annoying and awkward forcing you to stop shooting for a moment to let them unstagger before trying another shot for the head. If you want any suggestions on other better or worse console FPSs though, I'd be glad to give some. I own quite a lot of original Xbox games (153 of them) and I imagine the peak of budget FPSs were throughout it's lifespan.
It is hard to limit the selection. I'll try to keep it to FPS/TPSs: Excellent Exclusives (Omitting things I know you've played): Unreal Championship 2 - FPS/Third person shooter/hack and slash multiplayer arena hybrid that's awesome in just about every way. Breakdown - First person beat em up with a dedication to total immersion and a wild sci-fi story (Which I don't want to spoil in any way). Has some stunning set pieces that I think just about everyone should experience. Far Cry Instincts - You've probably played this, or the Xbox 360 re-release (Instincts Predator) that combines it with it's stand alone expansion (Evolution). Excellently paced, wide linear levels, some impressive set pieces, a fun gimmick and decent enough gunplay. Raze's Hell - A third person shooter that's... Weird. You're an ugly alien killing "cute" genocidal tellytubby expies. It's definitely worth checking out. Good/Average: 007: NightFire - Console version is entirely different from PC version and superior to it at that. Also on PS2 and Gamecube. Has in my opinion the best FPS levels of any 007 game out there, with a great mix of set pieces, interesting locales, nifty gadgets and fun gun play. It's just a shame that the vehicle and on-rails levels are awful. Urban Chaos Riot Response - A pretty good FPS with a police vs gangs setting with a well utilized riot shield gimmick, some un-intrusive ally NPCs and satisfying gunplay (With a pretty varied selection of weapons too). You can also taze bad guys until they light on fire, which is neat and enemies also love dropping the f-bomb. Darkwatch - You've probably played this. It's basically Halo Combat Evolved meets Evil Dead meets The Wild West. It's pretty awesome. Also on PS2, with a different set of multiplayer features for each platform. PS2 got splitscreen co-op, Xbox got splitscreen and online adversarial multiplayer. Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie - Yes, seriously. The FPS sections are actually pretty fantastic. I mean, you get to fight velociraptors with a Tommy gun, shoot pterodactyls with a Mauser and chuck so many spears at some many centipedes. The Punisher - Fantastic third person shooter that's extremely faithful to the comic character. Also on PC and PS2 (IIRC). Commandos Strike Force - Actually not that bad. It kinda betrays the series by being a pretty mindless FPS compared to the real time tactics/puzzle games the previous entries were. But I had a lot of fun with it and it did do explore some things I hadn't seen before in a WW2 setting, like fighting in Norway or freely fighting throughout a semi-open Russian town (A far cry from the linear Call of Duties). Also available on PC, so that version is probably the best one to get. Don't think it's available on any digital platform though unfortunately. Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth - Horror FPS that's definitely worth playing. It's also on PC, but that version has so many stability issues on modern systems it's ridiculous. Interesting but average: Die Hard: Vendetta - A FPS with ridiculously helpful auto-aiming and gameplay that's much more entertaining than it has any right to be, with levels that are just crammed with sub-objectives and bad guys to shoot. The acting is also hilariously bad, especially the voice-alike of Bruce Willis. Special Forces: Nemesis Strike - It's not great in any way, but I actually kinda love this game. It's definitely a budget game, but it's gameplay is really not bad at all. The issue is that it has a very erratic difficulty curve owing to ridiculous explosive splash damage on part of some enemies and because of some sky diving sequences requiring you to dodge a ridiculous amount of missiles. There's some good sequences in it though, like the aforementioned sky diving (Which is cool as hell, when it's not bullshit hard) or fighting snipers in a rainy flooded town. It has drivable vehicles (A hovercraft and a snowmobile, IIRC) that you can use to traverse some levels, which surprisingly works pretty good. It's also available on PC, but I had some audio issues with cutscenes. AWFUL: Classified the Sentinel Crisis - 100% budget game that's so mediocre it's mediocre. It's worth a glance, because I'm sure practically no one knows it exists. World War 2 Combat Road to Berlin - I have an embarrassingly old video of this on my channel, if you want to see it in motion. It's... Very not good. Also on PC. According to wikipedia, it's also known as Battlestrike Secret Weapons. World War 2 Combat Iwo Jima - I don't own this, but supposedly worse than Road to Berlin. Also on PC. Conspiracy Weapons of Mass Destruction - Played this once, just to see how bad it was. It's... Something. Unreal 2 - Yes, really. The state of this port needs to be seen to be believed. Loading times are awful, some levels are cut in half and ALL NPC animations are reduced to an amount of frames you can count on your fingers. Then there's some games I haven't played, but would like to because I've heard of their awfulness, like Chicago Enforcer. I've also heard that Gene Troopers is interesting, as a fairly average Sci-fi FPS with hilarious enemy sound effects.
That's a comprehensive list! I've played most of the good and decent ones, and heard of some of the others. But there's definitely some stuff in there for me to check out.
I looked into that game a few months ago and saw that it costs $40. I'm too cheap for that! I've tried to only spend a max of $15 for a game over the past few years but tarkov may be an exception eventually. I'll probably wait until it's near dead and goes on sale 5 years from now, lolz.
@@ProperlyPsychotic it goes on sale every once in a while so you could wait for one. Although I must warm you the game is early access so you are taking a bit of risk if you buy it. I love the gunplay so I feel satisfied but I'm just saying the game is still in beta
At the time, i played this game a lot. On my school my friends and i talked about how awesome the destruction and stuff. But one of my friends said "Halo came 5 years before and is much better, the game not even let you jump!" After years, i played again without a mentality of a kid who only have a PS2 to play games and a PC with some emulators....And boy the game sucked so.much And i regret the day i choose Black instead of Timesplitters 2 (Yeah.....Fuck me)

Go easy on them gun don't exist in England they just hear legends and whispers about the so called guns.
Is it true that they shoot lasers?
Oi we use shotguns and knives cos we’re gangsters!

Too busy being afraid of knives, and garden tools these days, right?
Ahem, I wasn't 10... I was 12!
Shit, that makes it even worse.
This video was a fucking blast. Exactly the breakdown of weapons that I'd have no chance of contesting with, even if I weren't a Canadian. This game's failure to appeal to gun-nerds reminds me of Driven's failure to portray open-wheel racing. Why they would target audiences guaranteed to call them on their bullshit, who knows.
Maybe they were so naive they actually believed they were making a gun porn? I'm still trying to wrap my head around it, so many years later.
Your name's Robinson Bobinson, okay?
Weird to see you here. The youtube still pops up your STALKER modded video. :D
Might have a look again.
Your IMFDB pages are top notch! I contributed a bit when I was in college but it's been a while since I went there on the regular.
It's so true.
Criterion makes a racing game more inspired by Hot Wheels than actual cars and an FPS more inspired by air soft guns than actual firearms. It kind of makes sense. Why they marketed it to gun nerds and made it all brown and blurry is truly a fucking mystery though.
Because marketing buzzwords make things sell.

I bet the people behind this game got their info on guns by binge-watching action movies and playing around with airsoft guns.

Just... no.

For a regular gamer this game is great.
Do not buy if you wish to 100% this game (the amount of time it shows I've played is how long it took to 100% the game.)"

XD
"Oops, there goes my zero. Better turn up the brightness to compensate."
I laughed way too hard at that part.
What grinds my gears is when games make an MP5 look like a G3 in perspective, or when games don't bother to animate the end of a belt of ammunition in a LMG model.
wait a g3 is a battle rifle right? how do they get them mixed up other than they are both from Germany

The thing that triggers me the most is how the Uzi magazine remains in the magwell for a split second after he hits the mag release before inexplicably propelling itself out of the magwell with more force than the game's lazily ejected shell casings.
I have no idea how the magazines on the Mac 11 and the Uzi are even dropped. Kellar just flexes his hand and BAM they shoot out.
It's better than the AK 47s weird bolt lockup during the reload animation
The entire game was made to be detailed in the "As many polygons as possible" way, not the "Let's make this realistic" way. Which means the developers just turned 13 when they developed this.
MegaFat1 I dont know the game feels allot more realistic than most shooters out there
Hah, I loved this game as a kid, but that was almost assuredly because I mainly played on PS2 and I hadn't played many "realistic" shooters. I went back and played it a year or two ago and holy shit it's bad. Still have fond memories of it, but it's hard to play when the levels just go on for way too long with no payoff.
Also your writing is just wonderful. Hope you continue to grow!
Thank you, I really appreciate it!
I would bet money that their thought process was pretty much:
"All right guys, how do we make our game's guns stand out from every other big FPS on the market?"
"Well, we could cover them with those square things that some guns have to make the viewmodels more complicated. Remember how cool the machine gun in Half-Life 2 looked?"
"YES!
"Assault Clipazine"... I love it.
God damn. It's like listening to Isaac Newton disecting the physics of Half-life 2 and explaining how little sense they make.
(Don't take that last statement too seriously... or do it anyway, because I stopped giving a shit a long time ago.)

At one point I remember Motoko saying breezily, "If you're afraid you're gonna overpenetrate, just think on your feet and make a judgment call!" I didn't understand 3/4 of what was said in this video (Guns are almost impossible to get in Romania). That said I still loved it. Now that I think about, there's a fun irony in the fact that one of the games with the best weapons modelling (Secret Service) was developed in a country where they're extremely hard to get a hold of, LOL.
Proof that FUN Labs gives a shit! Sometimes...

This is explained by the fact that you have a low inhibition to consuming trash, as evidenced by the anime pfp
Project reality has by far the best AR-15 family guns. Best sounds, best reloads.

Wulfy Wulf That game had awesome guns. I loved the silenced MP5 with the laser and the huge scope. Weird combo, but fun to use.

Happy New Year, you are my most affordable patreon.
Black is what happens when a bunch of 20 somthing men discover 90s blockbusters and i love it.
They sand them down too well, and there was a circular pattern on the top of the handguard that I can't quite figure out how it got there...but it was there and I never found anyone replicating it XD
But hey, I found some airsofters trying to give a "used look" to Polymere guns by coating them in silver paint first, then coating that black, then chipping off some edges...funnily enough they get laughed out of the room when they present their creation because most airsofters, atleast the ones I know of, are actual gun nerds, who happen to understand that shooting people with real guns is only fun for a limited time...
Recently Far Cry 3-4 did something similar with the charging handle magically flying back in the lock position
dude i really appreciate you like the shotgun from 007 TWINE for the n64, that's literally implanted in my mind as one of the coolest video game spas12, the sound and pump sounds are still good today. and To be fair there are legit modifications you can make to the mac 10 to have a side folding charging handle like that but the way they modeled it in this game looks really goofy, an authentic rendition of that is in rainbow six vegas 1 and 2 aswell as cod black ops 1 when you add an optic them
I love how in Black the AK-47 has a left-handed charging handle. I believe they did that in one of the Far Cry games as well.
im fairly sure you're thinking of far cry 2, but I could be wrong its been a bit since I last played that game
man your stuff about the guns is so true. you're the only game channel I've ever seen that critiques it. it is so infuriating to that no channels ever mention this stuff
Most of my favorite videogame guns come from Insurgency, because almost all of the guns felt reliable, punchy, and detailed.
Your channel is so great! I love the games you choose to review. Your analysis of the guns in this was spot fucking on.
You are an amazing reviewer. Even when we agree to disagree you manage to keep me invested on what you have to say.
i will say black has better reload animations than fear does
I grew up with FEAR but gotta be honest guns in FEAR are garbage, terribly modelled and terribly animated, Black, despite being unrealistic has way better gun models and animations.
Not a fan of Black and a decent fan of Fear but I have to agree
@@helghast_9539 no
Wow, this video alone is better gun porn than the game
I was wondering when you were going to put out a new video. And when I seen it wasn't a few review I immediately started watching!
Stop being 40 the game is just actually fun to play
@@Replica_Films2000 I beg to differ and I'm 33
You know what? I'm gonna check another, positive review and see what the reviewer has to say.
Okay...
Pros:
- similar to an arcade game, with focus on only a few mechanics
- special effects
- exaggerated sounds of guns
- the music like something from a 90s action flick
- setpieces from movies
- polished map design
- non-obtrusive tutorial
- action-packed
- well-balanced difficulty
- challenging final level
- short length adequate for a retro gamer
- shooting "dramatic and satisfying"
- good controls
- completly focuses on shooting
Cons:
- nonexistent story
- boring unlockables
- no multiplayer
I think I remember Official PlayStation Magazine UK gave this thing a 10/10.
David Vincent Disgraceful!
I loved black! It’s crazy I was just THINKING about this game and now it’s in my recommended. Crazy
8:55
HEY, HEY!
YOU SAID THE C-WORD
My god has your voice changed from 2020, holy shit!
I just noticed that the player flicks his thumb to eject an Uzi mag, despite that fact that the Uzi's very noticeable mag release is modeled on the gun where it should be.
Geoff Keighley is still cool though, at least for making AngryJoe publicly embarass himself .u.
Thanks for adding my comment. Also great video by the way.
The Glock 17 & 18C (GF17 & GF18 in game) in 007 Quantum of Solace is probably my favorite glocks. Even the 18 gets a full chrome gold paintjob ala COD4 in the multiplayer mode.
Glad I'm not the only one who played Quantum.
how tf did the youtube algorithm not recommend this channel to me? This stuff is great
How am I only getting the weapons board refrence in the title now? The fuck is wrong with me.
I dunno, are you kinda dumb or something?!
The Examined Life (of Gaming) Guilty as charged.
The Specialists had a solid Glock. Between all the guns being able to tear shit up, the exaggerated recoil, and wall banging through the paper thin drywall of Hammertime you felt pretty dangerous having the thing.
'Tear shit up' is a stretch given how the guns don't do shit for damage.
15:51 For when you absolutley, positivly have to jam the absolute shit out of your gun
The Glocks 18 & 20 on The Specialists mod are my favorites.
Larry Vickers should be a mandatory gun consultant for video games but if his price is too high they should at least give you the shot.
Best shooter on PS2? Was absolutely Cold Winter. Fucking great
I actually own an AR with 2 "forward assists" (they're the actual parts for FAs but are actually bolt releases).
Got any obscure picks? I have a pretty solid Xbox library, but nowhere near as big as my PC games obviously.
It is hard to limit the selection. I'll try to keep it to FPS/TPSs:
Excellent Exclusives (Omitting things I know you've played):
Unreal Championship 2 - FPS/Third person shooter/hack and slash multiplayer arena hybrid that's awesome in just about every way.
Good/Average:
007: NightFire - Console version is entirely different from PC version and superior to it at that.
Interesting but average:
Die Hard: Vendetta - A FPS with ridiculously helpful auto-aiming and gameplay that's much more entertaining than it has any right to be, with levels that are just crammed with sub-objectives and bad guys to shoot.
AWFUL:
Classified the Sentinel Crisis - 100% budget game that's so mediocre it's mediocre.
Escape From Tarkov has the most realistic weapons and handling I've ever seen in a video game.
Fuck off it will never be as good as This...
Chances to see a review of The Regiment?
Eventually!
At the time, i played this game a lot. On my school my friends and i talked about how awesome the destruction and stuff. But one of my friends said "Halo came 5 years before and is much better, the game not even let you jump!"
After years, i played again without a mentality of a kid who only have a PS2 to play games and a PC with some emulators....And boy the game sucked so.much
And i regret the day i choose Black instead of Timesplitters 2 (Yeah.....Fuck me)
First time seeing your content and I'm astounded you don't have a bigger following.
I am binge watching your rants. Keep up the good work!
The Glock 17 in Arma 2 and 3 is great. The sound of it is pure SEX. Makes me want to pull it out in every engagement be it against a small group of insurgents in the next room over or against a light tank.
10:28 “it may be out of place in a Rainbow 6 game...”
Nope. Siege gives the Navy SEALS a Deagle, for some reason.
