SpaceX has been working extremely hard to prevent a complete structural failure of Ship 24's interstage and payload section during Max Q. In this episode we will investigate how this situation developed starting from the day SpaceX was forced to move on from Ship 20 and Booster 4.
This is intended to be an example of issues that can occur during the rapid iteration process when the manufacturing begins to outpace vehicle qualification testing.

Man anyone not watching this is missing out on some incredibly unique and awesome content. Thanks for all the work you do
Thank you!! Plz share with your friends! It definitely helps.
100% movie length deep dives into starship are the best.
@@CSIStarbase definitely will
@@therocinante3443 - I agree with you that the movie length deep dives into the different aspects of the work currently taking place to make the SpaceX Starship a flight worthy item are very education and a joy to watch.🙂
@@edzuris7944 i totally agree. he is awesome and i don't understand why such low subscription count. the man is amazing. Push his reach
What an amazingly well orchestrated time contraction of a very long and seemingly disjointed array of seemingly unrelated actions. Thanks for bringing at all together in true CSI style!
Thank you!!
Better engineering descriptions on this channel than on any others covering SpaceX.
Yes🎉
Absolutely.
I can't understand why he doesn't have over 100,000 subs, a milestone to get more support from UA-cam.
@@johnbosley4988 Because his videos are an hour long and he posts them once a month.
As someone who loves the content here, every video request me to set aside time to properly watch and absorb it. And it isn't just something I can do while falling asleep.
Compare this to something like Matt Lowne or Marcus House that produce digestible 15 min vids I can usually play alt-tabbed anytime.
Sad to see some of these things… seems like spacex might have gone too fancy, why have the downpipe come through the other tank… seems an unnecessary complication at this point
@@Dawho99 Unless the temp. inside the tank is required for the downpipe, just a thought. Tell me Alexander, do you think corrugating the whole sleeve for B7.1 would be stronger, and possibly save a little weight ?
Looking forward to this one!

Oh wow. You are pretty early this time! Always get excited to see comments from you lol

Mate, I cannot actually put into words how impressed I am at what you guys are doing with this channel. In such a short time you have rocketed into my list of "do not miss a single episode". These amazingly thought out and analysed videos are exactly what the hardcore fans need.
The insights you've managed to tease out are phenomenal. I'm blown away, good work.

Absolutely stunning how you manage to oversee such a long period of (seemingly) disjointed events, often from the smallest of details, turn it into a single narrative and then present it in a beautiful and as easy as possible to understand manner. I know you bring together the work of many people, so you stand on the shoulders of giants. But damn, you manage to make the stack mighty tall! Thank you so much and the same to everyone who’s work make this possible.
THank you! That was our goal with this one. Its awesome when people recognize how hard it was to do that
Sir, ....even though I watch Starbase each day, the mechanical problems included by yourself including the remediation is astonishing, by Spacex certainly but also including yourself... I am totally stunned !! Your skill set and knowledge blow my mind as to the level of intensity by Spacex as well as all things I learn from you Sir !! I thank you so much Zack, your knowledge as well your abilities to educate the lay person is so very welcome. I thank you Sir !! Zack on Zack !! It's amazing to think that SpaceX moves through this testing is rapidly as they do. There's so much more involved in it than I realized. Thanks for the great work Zack.!
How many years do it have to take before we stop calling Starship development rapid?
The level of detail in this was phenomenal guys, massively underrated channel.
Fantastic work, Zach! Your engineering skills reveal how much plain work is taking place at Boca Chica.
Thanks Jim!
You guys know that when @CSIStarbase uploads a video about Stage Zero and/or Starship, you know it will be exciting.
I watch A LOT of space and SpaceX related videos. This is the channel I come to to make sure I haven't missed anything. This utuber is consistently fantastic at what he does. Kudos and Thank You!
Bro this really is some quality starship content
Thank you!
gonna be a long night, looking forward!
Still 6 minutes until it's live, and I already know it's gonna be a banger. I always leave the video smarter than I entered. Struggling to wait to see what this one entails.

Can’t wait for this. Already know this is going to be amazing- I was so excited after the last part ended to see this one, and it’s finally happening!!
Zack you have one of the most professional and interesting UA-cam channels. Excellent job!
Thank you!
You’ve really earned your channel’s name of CSI. You’re able to bring in information from different sources and analyse them all to come up with a clear, combined picture. Well done!
Amazing look back. I can not believe so much is done so quickly. Thank you to you & your amazing team.
Time flies for sure!
Thank you for this outstanding content!!!
The UA-cam videos you share are AMAZING! I am beyond thrilled you are going to be expanding your efforts to a full-time status with your channel.
I also like your past participation on Panels with Scott M, Ellie in Space, Anne C. Hopefully Jordan, the A.A. will make it to the next one. It would be spectacular to see you all gathered together to commentate for the 1st Starship launch. The lame mainstream network media outlets coverage will completely be outshone by the collective expertise you and others provide...
I foresee your channel subs are going to expand log-rhythmically based on the quality of your content!
All the best,
M-
You do yourself proud putting out this rigorous analysis of the Starship and its move toward launch. I am quite impressed with your insight into the effectiveness of the test articles that Space X used to evaluate what measures needed to be taken to improve the integrity of the entire launch vehicle. I look forward to your future videos on the progress of Space X and starship.
Your production value is insanely good. Brilliant narrative and concisely recapping of important events. I have been really busy the last few months so I have missed a lot of these details. But watching this has brought me up to speed. Thanks so much!
If I could slam the like button 100 times I would. Amazing content no one else is doing. Keep it up, loving it!
By far the most underrated space channel.
I like more professional episodes such as this, compared to your earlier ones.
You are evolving!
This was a fantastic breakdown of the engineering hurdles SpaceX had to negotiate as they evolved Starship and Superheavy Booster.
Brilliant!
Another great vid! The visual updated Jax is very much appreciated. Im really pleased with the news that Zack is going to do this full time and we will get more quality vids in the future! Thanks and good luck!
You together with Jax, and your combined knowledge about Starship is amazing. Very interesting to watch.👍
Best Starship production analysis I have seen in the past year. You answered every question I have had that every other similar channel failed to answer, and you did it all in one video with absolutely no filler which is such a relief to see these days. I am shocked you are still only at 40k followers, but I am willing to bet that will change when Starship does launch and people come flocking for quality content because this is top quality. Every other channel should take note.
Thank you that means a lot!
Why must we wait....
Gotta tidy up some things. lol
There are fewer thing I wait for in anticipation of these...
I am so impressed by both your excellent production values and the precise and considered approach you use to derive telling technical analysis.
It demonstrates great maturity and genuine love for your subject.
I can only hope you have crippling personal failings to allow you to walk amongst us mortals!
Joking apart keep up the good work.

Wow, the quality of content is increasing exponentially. The CSI Starbase team is really living up to its name. I can even see this material being used in the future to tell the complete history of Starship to a general audience like it used to be on Nat Geographic or Discovery channels.
Excellent work Team CSI, thank you!
What does CSI stand for?
Great work Zack! These just keep getting better.
🎉 an amazing new episode! So much information well explained, this channel is unique due to the type of content. Thanks CSI Starbase.
Thank you!
As usual, a truly excellent walk through of the engineering history of the Starship system. Good job!! 👍
Thank you for the great structural testing explanations and lowly speculativitiveness [sic] because you backed everything up with awesome photo evidence!!!
I try to stick to 80% facts 20% speculation
Just watched this channel for the first time and subscribed straight away. This was the best coverage of some technical aspects of testing and modifications that I have yet seen. The highlighting of areas under discussion was much appreciated. Great job, well done.
Great presentation CSI!
A new detail every three seconds!
Glad you liked it!
Outstanding, Zack! Great insights into the major whats, hows, and whys of the last 15 months or so. Understandable presentations from solid understanding, and forget the hype. That's always what I look for, and what I so seldom get. I truly appreciate your assembly of data and its construction into real information. That requires massive work - a veritable thesis. My heartfelt thanks! It's wonderful also to be able to look at the development process with appreciation of some difficulties and get some idea of what's beyond the first orbital flight, as SpaceX grapples to achieve its truly phenomenal ambitions. This video will stand up historically as a piece of documentary on a huge project that promises to have a significance we can't yet entirely know. It's some of the best work I've seen on UA-cam, period.
What you are doing is excellent, my appreciation of what is going on at Spacex is vastly enhanced by each episode, as you clearly and concisely explain what has happened.
Keep up the good work
Good job. I hadn't realized all of the trials and tribulations that SpaceX has had to navigate. I have a better understanding of why things are taking longer than people hoped. What a massive project!
This is by far the best summary of SPACEX Starship I have seen. It felt like I had found a seat at an engineering dissertation at a major university. Thanks for this!
An absolutely superb presentation. Zac, you and your team are doing invaluable work in giving people a hard look at the intricacies of rocketry in general, and Starship and SH in particular. As an engineer, I really enjoy that you almost always answer the questions that come to mind during your presentations. Excellent work.
Zach, you're doing next level reporting!!! I was wondering why things at Starbase slowed down. I didn't realize they were having so many structural challenges. I like the novel approach of using the Jax avatar. I find its voice very easy to understand. Thanks.
Thank you! Truthfully I think activity at Starbase has picked up dramatically. Mostly on the manufacturing side though.
I did not find that surprising, with 4mm thin steel. A 1 ft. model starship made of paper has the same relative wall thickness...crazy.
Absolutely beautiful work as always. Congrats to you and the entire team that come together to produce this content from the wonderful renders and animation to the incredibly details engineering analysis. 🤘🏼❤️
So the big issue appears to be compression vertically through the payload door area.
What if it was rotated 90 degrees? I realise the dispenser may have to be more complex, doubled up, heavier. But so will be all the strengthening.
Alternatively, they could go back to the original concept of a large hinged door. That way when closed, the door becomes a structural element. Much the same as car windscreens are now. Pez dispenser can still be used, just without the slot approach.
56:48 Damn that musicalization was really on point, got me goosebumps. Keep the deep dive investigations coming! I'm really jealous about your understanding on starship haha. Excelent work as always
Zack, your video content is outstanding. It shows how hard it is to put Starship into orbit. What a journey. Keep rocking. Congrats from Europe.
Thanks Roberto!
Always a great deep-dive into Starbase activities and progress towards a launch.
This is your best yet Stage Zero Zack! Really enjoying how tight and informative it was without lengthy gimmicks. Great back and forth with Jax, and incredible animations that make it crystal clear what you are referencing. It’s amazing the details you guys manage to pick out that would otherwise be completely missed. Great narrative too, it really felt like a journey rather than unconnected observations. Keep it up and watch out Marcus House.
*Easily* the best Starship engineering video on the internet.
Wow! Thank you!
Hi Zac! Your channel & it's content are really something STAGGERING and overwhelming INTERESTING! I could never even imagine this detail level without you ingenuity & expertize you show in this channel! THANKS A LOT ZAC !!!
Awesome content. Helps us understand the incredible difficulty of Starship integration and testing. Thank you.
Great value adding content. Thank you for the extra effort. This puts you ahead of the pack :)
Hi Zach, I love your deep dive, detailed videos ... and now I am looking forward to more frequent videos from you ... thanks alot ... keep them coming.
Bro I hope this video blows up (not a RUD way lol) because the effort put into this is insane. Also it just goes to show how crazy SpaceX is in trying to make Starship a reality lol
Truly excellent presentation. Most complete coverage of the topic I have seen.

I'm a long time SpaceX watcher and you guys never cease to amaze me. Great Job!
You and your team do a great show. Keep it up. I’m watching.
Awesome job as always. Super informative
Thanks again!
Thanks for another great video! After some thought, I think the best way to launch Star Links is with Star Links embedded in two halves of a recoverable fairing. Yes, this increases the drag going up, but it protects the top fins from max Q and it can be mechanically locked in place over the top such that it doesn't compromise Star Ship structural integrity. Another concept is to put the units into a cap over the top anchored to the roots of the wings. This separates, dispenses the Star Links, and fall to earth like an Apollo capsule with parachutes.
Informative and well made, keep up the good work! I watch other chanels for weekly updates, but we need these in depth videos spanning the whole life cycle of the Boosters and Starships to see how the design was changed, problems were found and moslty fixed :D. I feel like the Staship saga is becoming full on TV Series, let's hope they don't leave us with a another cliffhanger.
Yeah I can’t wait for this first launch to just be over with. Lots of fun things that will happen after
33:40 is when the video really starts to answer why Starship payloads won't happen until later.
Yep, and everything before that explains why this happened.
Great Video thanks for all the hard work that went into making it.
Great video once again. Very informative. Your work is essential to document the process, honestly. Thank you!
The work and detail you put into your videos is amazing. Keep up the great work ❤
Wow, the channel with the detail I was looking for. Amazing work, thank you.
I'm liking your long form productions. You're doing for ship structure what Everyday Astronaut is doing for engines. Nice work.
Outstanding! Thank you for your diligence. You need to excel your talent. You are able to draw people in. I started watching and I was hooked! Thanks again CSI Starbase. Smart man you are...
Thanks for your detailed and very well presented information! And all the best for you going full time with this, Zack. Terrific work by the entire CSI Starbase team!

Impressive clarity, technique and delivery. Great stuff.
Very informative as always 👏
Thank you!
You have not made a lot of videos, so it is Very enjoyable when you do a new one. Lot's of good in-depth stuff with a new outlook!
man, so much cool infos condensed in one video! thanks!
I feel like if it gets far enough away to not damage stage 0 when it explodes it's going to be a huge success.
😂 this is true lol
SN8 was exactly like that, and sure, one late in-flight failure of the first full stack would still count as success as far as I'm concerned. But can they still afford another streak of RUDs that we witnessed as SN9-10-11 all developed various unforeseen failure modes? This is way more expensive hardware even when you take stage 0 out of the equation, the original trial and error approach is off the table by now. And with all the added structural support patchwork you can see it eating away literal tons of useful mass to orbit capacity. As "easy" as it seemed in the early days, one thing is clear now, they still have a very long and rather costly road ahead of them to meet the original design goals. And the clock is ticking, in a few years Artemis missions should rely on this this thing to reliably fly and refuel in orbit, then fly to and land on the Moon and then become crew rated. And we are still concerned whether it will be able withstand max-Q without collapsing on itself. Seems to be a bit behind schedule. Rooting for them to succeed, but I'm starting to be a bit skeptical.
@@matwyder4187 This video series has opened my eyes to the core structural challenges Starship is facing. 😮 Yesterday, I was naively confident they'd succeed in getting to orbit sometime this year. Re-entry was my main systematic concern. I had assumed the basic design had enough structural margin engineered in and the stainless steel hull was plenty strong.
@@737smartin Not sayin' they won't, in fact I'm pretty confident they will make it to orbit very soon. What's not clear is how important of a milestone it will be. They seem like struggling a bit with finalizing a generic platform for all the proposed variants, it just comes with so many compromises. Yet it should fly regular missions asap, collect data to let them iron out all the quirks in time. If it's another one trick pony and they end up spending another year crushing cans, they will clearly miss all deadlines.
Wow, that's a great timeline and analysis of Starship development so far. Longer episode than other youtubers; you have a lot to say and you must have a diverse audience to satisfy. My attention span was tested but I passed! Thank you!
Nice vid. Honestly I almost didn’t watch it at first since the title sounded a bit baity. But this ended up being such an awesome, in-depth review of the past couple years of starship progress. Thanks 👍
This is a fascinating analysis. And so much more information than we can pick up during hours of live feeds.
