i need to say, I’m really glad i got to hear your opinion on the Mists of Pandaria expansion. I genuinely feel like its one of my favorite expansions in WoW, and my RP character has retired to a farm there. It definitely had its problems, like the massive amount of daily quests being the only way to gain Reputation with most factions, but it has such a cozy vibe to it, that it stays in my thoughts always. MUCH better than Warlords of Draenor.
i cant agree more with this. the draenor storyline got tiring after a while for me and while i do really enjoy the environments there and in many other expansions pandaria is definitely my favourite besides dragonflight. it has some of my favourite mounts and armour aesthetics and the general art direction was very well done imo. like maybe i dont have the same experience as someone whose played WoW for longer since i only got into it thru the dragonflight expansion(hence my love for it) but i think during my time learning the game once i started exploring the other expansions pandaria was the one to really capture my heart the most despite its flaws
You can notice which MMOs you have and haven't played, but to be fair, this list will ALWAYS be super subjective! I'd rank 2014 a lot higher as many had the high hopes of WIldstar reviving oldschool MMORPG difficulty, combined with modern sensibilities. And then 2015 showed us that this wouldn't happen. The release of Ragnarök Online was also a HUGE deal for many, as that was the first grind MMO that became a hit in many EU countries. But alas, everyone's experience is different.
I can see what you mean abiout the hopes of Wildstar but the list isnt about hopes, only results. I dont know about RO but we didnt hear or experiemce much about it over here which would explain its lack of importance. Trythfully, there began to be too many mmos a lot of of which were mid in those years overall.
I am super sad you not only missed the release of WILD STAR, but also the tragic slow fall of Wild Star. From its release as a subscription game, to it trying to go free to play but not turning a profit. It was a hard-core oriented MMO and it ate up a metric ton of my time. It had some of the best action combat I'd ever see in an MMO with BEAUTIFUL animations. And it didn't even show up on the list :( Also no eve online mention blows my mind, since it was and is still making history. Down the rabbit hole just released a whole history about it! And it's about to get a first-person shooter game mode aside from its usually ship-based exploration game mode. And all the real life money that is involved with the game... You missed a lot of good MMOs that had a good shelf life.
Sadly no mention of FFXI at all, seems like a miss. Over than that, should have totally started the video at year 1999. EQ coming out and kickstarting the genre in earnest is def mom made pizza rolls.
FFXI is truely the one game I wish I was 100% there for back in the day, good lord the warmth and passion I hear people talk about it drives me insane.
Just wanna say the 2010s losing streak for mmos coincides with a lot of us being in college / grad school while the glory days were when we were in middle school and high school. The quality of content is definitely the biggest factor here but also a lot of people just stopped having time to sink into mmos.

Dark Age of Camelot is probably to this day my favorite MMO. The 3 Faction Realm vs Realm PvP was by far the best iteration of a MMO world PvP to ever come out in my opinion. Also the fact that every faction had their own classes made it super in depth so you had to know what to expect from each faction and they would fight very differently. Even just leveling characters on each faction was an insanely different experience so it was nearly 3 different games in one.
i am so happy wizard101 got a mention, i've genuinely really enjoyed it while playing in the last couple years and it somehow *still* gets new worlds. how? I HAVE NO IDEA.
9:10 It's worth noting, while it may seem crazy that they released an expansion a year after launch for Guild Wars, that Nightfall is the second expansion.
Pirates of the Caribbean Online was incredibly fun. I played for years and was there for the shutdown in Port Royal. It's very clear what MMOs you have and have not played based on how much focus you give those specific games and what games are almost/completely ignored. Still, pretty good as far as tier lists go! Nobody has the time to play everything, after all.
Not much mentioned of maplestory when its the 5th most played MMORPG currently. Reboot (no more trading or cash shop items used for progression) pretty much revitalized maplestory in the west too as it gave a f2p experience of progression.

The amount you slept on BDO is insane. It’s in the top 5 MMOs by players depending on where you look. Giving WOW tokens a L when OSRS has bonds is a wild take. Giving 2020/2021 the lowest score is bonkers, the player count and cash flow is what paid for 2022 and will be seen as a reset. BDO did seasons in 2020, osrs/rs3 player count skyrocketed ect.
Yeah, it's just 3D interactive chat. There are (usually janky) games *within* it, made by users, but they are just an outgrowth of Second Life's user programming language. If you want to call it anything in modern terms, it's a metaverse system (though 'metaverse' is an old term, it's since became super overused and associated with NFTs)
Mists of Pandaria was my first Wow entry because before that I couldnt justify asking my parents for money each month when i could find tons of free mmo’s to enjoy even more, but in highschool my boyfriend wanted me to play with him. I got pretty into MOP and shortly after me joining Warlords of Draenor came out, which to most people is like the worst one by far but I enjoyed it because i didnt have anything to compare it too. But for people trying to raid or experience the highs of playing with friends in Wrath of lich king i understand why so much of the future xpacs fell short.
I totally feel you on Warlords of Draenor. I first played WoW during the VERY end of Wrath, but stopped near the start of Cata, cuz i was in middle school and had an allowance of like. 20 dollars a month (5 dollars every friday) I started up again during Warlords cuz i had a friend who was looking to get the recruit a friend mount, so I started playing again. I wasn’t able to do any serious raiding (or even casual, really) since i was recruited onto the European servers, even though i was american. i didn’t hit max level for like. 3 months after i used my level 90 boost, because i spent most of the time going through old content seeing what i had missed. I thought it was a great expansion, but i see what flaws there were. I did eventually switch over to the NA servers when i met my (now ex) girlfriend. I still look fondly at WoD though. 2021 was the year I stopped playing OSRS (and MMOs in general). Really remember the feel of things just having stagnated. Glad things have got better since then
cant believe you glossed over toontown closing :')
Truly a Robert Evans worthy transition to products and services.
Damn, those memes were epic ☺☺
2002 didnt even mention ffxi but was defined by a single expansion, neat
7:05 some dedication there
S tier 2023 DAoC is back with Project Eden
tera went pretty hard in 2015 or so tbh, i stopped playing runescape after 2012 (also after toontown closed) and picked up tera as my first mmo in a while in 2015. i played for maybe a year before falling out of it again and didn't touch mmos again until covid hit and i got back into runescape again.
Damn! those memes were epic! 💯😀👌🔥
5:35 EQ *_Planes Of Power_* was the MMO expansion that would come to define "modern" raiding. In fact, Blizzard recruited several of the top EQ raiders to work as game designers on WOW (including Jeff Kaplan!)
6:07 - "Capitalism, I sure hope he talks a bit about Eve Online"
6:20 - "He said the name~!"
pretty good video but it was like 90% a history of WoW and Runescape. No mention of FF14 selling out of digital copies, or mention any popular ESO or SWTOR expansions in the mid/late 2010’s FF14 adding free trial. Barely touched on how popular and hyped up Lost Ark was, ect. Still liked but would enjoy more variety! ❤
I wish those memes were epic... damn
And in 2008 was also the year Dofus 2.0 came out ... even before Runescape HD where also intruduced summoning
FFXI, no mention?....Revoking your presidential status.
you missed the SWTOR hype. It was for a couple months the new "WoW killer", trumping it in player count. Then people ran out of things to do and unsubbed in mass.
No love for Asheron's Call 😢 my first MMO and still one of the best ever. It was scheduled to be released before EverQuest and got delayed. I believe if it did release before it would have been bigger. The pvp was top notch, questing and exploration was crazy as it was (and still to this day) one of the biggest maps/worlds ever made.
My thought too brother. Rip one of the best mmos ever made
Sir I ABSOLUTELYY DID play Pirates online, it was the shit and I LOVED it. Such a good game. Miss it tons
PUZZLE PIRATES MENTIONED
Hype!! I ould love to see an idyl puzzle pirates vid
how do you have so little subscriber count? your videos are great
W2004 to 2007, the happiest times of my life.. (or at least 45 days worth of WoW playtime that was the best of me life). Imagine that, Okanar, 7th grade High Warlord of the Horde (in the OLD ranking system), what a badass hunter 😅. Some say he may return
'08 was the year I picked up Mines of Moria. Still have the box and friend codes. Mom most definitely made pizza rolls.
Some top tier memes in this video.
I love the fact that you bias RuneScape as a RuneScape lover in your mmo videos 😂 other people who talk about mmos never give RuneScape the love it deserves. Finally! The hero we needed
I feel like not mentioning mobile osrs in 2018 is a bit of a miss. It's how I learned about osrs after quitting in 2012.
Wow those memes sure were epic
Idyl, I keep seeing you talking about all these mmos but I’ve yet to see you cover anything about DDO dungeons and dragons online! How can you pass on such an amazing game
Personally have never seen more epic memes. Nice work
thank you mr. president
neat look at the "recent" history of MMOs!
Not mentioning Final Fantasy XI in 2002 is weird, as it was the very first multi platform MMORPG where console players and PC players were together, and also the game that generated more revenue in the series until of course Final Fantasy XIV.
As somebody watching scrubs, im at S5 and now im worried, looking at the tier list. Idyl why
Puzzle Pirates mention!! you should really check that silly little game out. I think it's still online. It's an absolute blast and a really interesting take on the MMO genre
