german army wargame kriegspiel was earlier but played with coloured wooden rectangle to represent troops latter miniatures added
Grand Moff Tarkin (aka the actor, Peter Cushing) was an avid Wargamer! There is a few minutes long presentation done for the BBC showing him painting and demonstrating wargaming in 54mm (1/32nd scale) on youtube.
