Since you are asking, no the film does not talk about that women will only survive when they are moms. But there is a certain feeling you get once you become a mother (and for some women it even starts at the idea of having a child, just btw) and how that first year with a baby feels like. And that is something all the women who are mothers in crew and cast said: The natural disaster is not the focus point but more of a analogy of what happens to you when you first become a mom. I think it is pretty on the nose when her water breaks and at the same time the flood hits London. It is so overwhelming.

I thought she almost wasnt out just for the baby/being a mum or she wouldnt have made the choice to leave the commune. Felt the tug between her own desire to find her partner won over the desire to protect the baby.
Even though no real danger, knowing the feeling you have when you first have a baby and the realisation you have to protect them from everything. I felt so anxious of any danger all the way through. Was nerve-wracking x

Jodie Comer would entice me to see a film. It isn’t my go to genre so I never know if I’m disappointed in a film because of that or it’s missing something. Did you see Leave the world behind? I also stumbled across The Road with Viggo Mortensen .. probably Viggo that made me watch on even with a fear of potential gore.

Thought it was okay, understated, liked the bleakness of the coastal shots 7 out of 10

    Hey Mark!
So will try and give a more shortened response to enable it to fit under the vid 😁
So yeah prettily shot, felt very impressionistic, the cinematography captured the tangible sensory experience of sight, sound, touch etc in a really immersive way. Jodie Comer great performance, and depicting this crisis of new motherhood against a cataclysmic backdrop felt fresh!
However completely concur with you regarding Joel Fry Casting choice, the dystopian element felt toothless in many instances and lacked the sinister push or more threats of danger, it made this disaster feel to safe, like it’s no big deal to a degree 😁which alienated me.
Even though the gender reversal was an interesting choice (remember overhearing a guy talking to his female friend and quite peed off about why all the men were fragile, crumbling etc) I think making the majority of male characters that vulnerable and inept, it missed out on elevating the danger or even making some of the other female characters more dangerous (the commune for instance) could’ve been real interesting.
The ending felt a little lacklustre for me.
Would say 3.5/5 and out of 100 would say 55 👌🏾

Entirely agree … I also very much feel the suggestion is that their female strength comes from their maternal instinct alone - and would have maybe liked a woman we also followed alongside Jodie who wasn’t a mom - to give a more rounded female perspective … thanks for your analysis 🎯
