It drives me nuts when people get down on Carlos for relying on a few pentatonic licks, or playing out of tune, etc! I love fusion and my hero is Allan Holdsworth, possibly the most advanced guitarist ever, but that does not mean that I do not appreciate Carlos' greatness. Let's not forget very few musicians have the skill and savvy to stay successful for decades, let alone develping a whole new style in Latin Rock, a signature guitar sound, and the ability to be the most melodic of players! Running a band for decades is a triumph in itself, let alone Carlos reinventing himself for a younger audience, and frankly being one of the most exciting bands on the planet too. He stretched himself in his jazzy period and those albums are sublime - just bliss out to Lotus and you will understand - so lets appreciate the decades of pleasure Carlos and his band has given us rather than being haters, which so many on YT seem to be these days. Peace.
You’re absolutely right. No one knocks classic blues players for what they do. Muddy Waters could never play like Django…so what! All the GREATS who have played with Carlos should be confirmation of his talent and soul.
FUSION DAN YOU ARE 100% CORRECT BOTH CARLOS AND ALAN ARE IN MY TOP 5 CUITARISTS OF ALL TIME ALONG WITH SAVID GILMOUR EDDIE VAN HALEN AND THE KING JEFF BECK YOUR COMMENT IS ON POINT BRO PLUS THERE IS NO OTHER CUITARIST IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC WHO HAS MIXED AND PLAYED AND RECORDED MORE DIFFERENT GENRES OF NUSIC THAN CARLOS PERIOD AND YOU HAVE GOOD TASTE BRO I LISTEN TO HOLDSWORTH ALL THE TIME ESPECIALKY THE ROAD GAMES CD.
We owe Carlos a great debt for having the confidence to put these amazing bands and events together and then letting all his guests stretch. Nothing like a Santana show!
Jeff: have to agree... Hiram was one of the most natural and varied guitarists I have ever listened to - he could step up to the plate with greats such as James Brown, Clapton and Carlos and never look out of place. too cool for school is an understatement. God bless
He was such a strong player with such strong technique, I love the way you played special effects. And made them sound so aligned with his own playing.
Wow never saw this one before. I had the honor to call Hiram a friend. Recording “Way Kool” with him is one of the highlights of my engineering career. RIP Hiram.
That's pretty cool, anyone else famous I might know you worked with? What's the significance of the "off the wall"... I'm not even going to suggest it...could it be?
Wow great jam there, what else would we expect from such greats !?! Patrice Rushen ??? I wasn't expecting that. Carlos has always been one of the best guitarists with a tremendous heart. Hiram will never be forgotten Rest In Music !!!
Hiram was a total badass, capable of playing all styles! One of my all times favorites!! (Here one for you - Listen to Mike Stern Mood Swing, and tell me that is not Hiram playing that guitar :)
Patrice and Hiram are obviously monster soloists while Santanas signature rather always has been his talent and incredible sound. Nice to see Hiram still looking good. thank you for sharing.
Hiram was an amazing musician and thur this video he lives on. So who else is on stage? Hiram, Patrice Rushan, Wayne Shorter, and the crazy good Santana regulars?
I was there that night, and I`m the idiot that keeps whistling. I did Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Wayne Shorter and a few others played. Bill Cosby was on stage with Miles. It went on for two nights. I went to both, of course. I`m so surprised to find this footage. Thanks for posting. Just have seen my 19 year old self sitting behind the photographers at 6:35.
I was at this concert but can only remember him playing with Wayne Shorter? The concert was over several days so did he play one night without Shorter?
That’s Wayne Shorter!!! This is part of the Santana/Wayne Tour in 1988. Carlos - Guitar & Wayne Shorter - Tenor/Soprano saxes with Chester Thompson and Patrice Rushen - Keys, Alphonso Johnson Bass, Armando Peraza - Congas, Jose “Chepito” Areas - Timbales, Ndugu Chancler - Drums. Hiram plays as a guest in this song (I suppose he was playing at the same festival, probably with David Sanborn).
Where can we see a concert like this in 2020?? Where the hell have all the great shows gone? It's all mainstream music crap now...Beiber, Katy Parry, Lady Gaga
Mid 80s was weak then the 'Smooth' era was weak. Clive got Carlos his Emmies. Carlos is best in a Spiritual not commercial venture.✌. Btw Hiram is playing Carlos' PRS.
Wow! All the Talent! Patrice is soooo good!

Hiram was an amazing musician and thur this video he lives on. So who else is on stage? Hiram, Patrice Rushan, Wayne Shorter, and the crazy good Santana regulars?
I saw this great Tour. Wayne's mic was off! Patrice kind of stole it!!!

Hiram was one of those guys like Jeff Beck or Mike Bloomfield. As soon as they play, you know It's them. Distinctive and never predictable.
Love from Africa ❤❤❤🎸
For all those who seem to be suggesting that Carlos is not a master soloist: you need an enema.
What a nice trip !! Many thanks Carlos ;)
Explosive and Cataclysmic solos by Carlos, Hiram, and Patrice!!
💣💥🎸🎹🎶 😅
YEAH!!! Great footage...thanks for posting. What an All Star Band?!?!?!?!
Phenomenal footage!! Thanks for uploading.

Essa época o Santana arrepiando na guitarra.

Yes, borrowed on of Carlos' PRS guitars here
Ive seen him 5 times over the years the first time i saw him he come with buddy miles on drums.
Did Hiram just play on a whim? Thats why he’s using one of Carlos’s guitars?
Hiram took Carlos to School, by being Humble
