Saw him at the cubby bear in Chicago during a horrendous snowstorm so only 50 people were there and he signed some cassettes for me. He didn’t care that not many people were there because of the storm. He went onstage and played magnificently like it was for thousands. It was one of my favorite concerts of all time. RIP Hiram I will never forget you or your music.

1997 Trondheim. His gig still is the absolute best of all I've ever seen. There are so many other top great players and I've heard so many extraordinary concerts. But his energy and joy, humor and natural flow was something else. I have never had so much fun listening a gig and enjoying pure skill at the same time. That energy and experience still just makes me smile wide and laugh. And will never fade. Feel very privileged to have a chance to carry that memory through life and still feel that energy lifting me up.

hiram and his band here. Theres really no words for this its just pure musical goodness. He's like a kid in a candystore just having the time of his life seamlessly blending blues rock jazz all of it. The amount of personality....Character...undiluted embrace of man and music. Hiram's lil dancing and just how he really gets into is just purely coming from within. Seeing him and sanborn and george duke and all those guys play is just humans in their most elemental musical natrual habitat. It's like having a friend over playing a tune for you. I hope to see more musicians in this way playing today

I still think he did his best playing as part of the Letterman show’s house band.
Both his rhythm and solo playing.
    I saw him play once.
It was in 1977 at the uptown club called Mikell’s.
He was playing with David Sanborn’s group, which was really something else.

I was/am a big Hiram fan, and had the honor to catch his act a few times at joints in the Village back in the 90's when he unpredictably danced on tables and gave his audiences our money's worth. He was truly electrifying, and one of a kind! R.I.P.

Such a great guitarist, and a huge sense of FUN to go with it. Also, I love how unapologetic he was, as in, there's a lot of love for bass players and hot bass playing, that virtuosic guitar playing tends to be overlooked. Maybe this is just my paranoia as a guitar player who just tries to blend in with a band. But I just love Hiram's confidence and conviction and his general f*** it-ery

Saw him in Germany in the 2000ies and was shocked seeing him suffering from drug abuse....been always a huge fan of him..sad to see him passing away much too early just like jaco..at least he lives on in this great concert video..tnx man..you were the best

Yes, I remember seeing him in the 2000s around he did tour to promote his Cort signature model.
The groove was there but his playing is clearly in his decline, as in not as sophisticated anymore.

    From wikipedia
Shortly after the Atlantic albums, he recorded a few tracks from those specific sessions for a live event at the NYC-located Indigo Blues Venue, in order to eventually release it on laserdisc and CD for the commercial market in Japan. His live band from the Indigo Blues-sessions included: Dave Delhomme (keyboards), Steve Logan (bass guitar), and Steven Wolf (drums). The setlist of the Indigo Blues-performance:
    Introduction
    Gotta Get Your Jollys
    What About Me
    Angelina
    Another Night
    Cactus
    Never Give Up
    Wolfman
    Show Me
Them Changes + Funky Broadway / (total time: 60 minutes)

Check out Hiram's solo on 'Wolfman' at 46:30 and try to deny that it aint fully quintessential Hiram at his best. Whimsical, rythmic, bluesy, funky and so on time techinically that no one can ever duplicate it. This is a true slice of Hiram to me! God bless brutha!
ps - Wolfman, always a guily pleasure. Corny in a late 80's way, yet inescapibly infectious & tight. I actually have the opening of the tune as my phone's ringtone. Alight, I confess, I love this tune!! : )

ive been playing guitar professionaly for 53 years and i think hiram was one of the best. i got to see him live at a namm show in nashville in the 90s and he was of course great. i did talk to steve logan who i think was a little surprised nashville dug their music so much. i head hiram tryin out amps at the matchless booth but felt too intimidated to speak. also saw danny gatton alone at the bar having a beer and was too intimidated to speak. now of course its too late. these guys are only human so if you really like someones work and you see them in person i think you will not regret speaking to them because none of us know when they or us will be gone foreer guitarcat10

I always loved Hiram ever since I came across some of his solo albums in the late 80s/early 90s. His best solo, though, might be on Sting's cover of "Little Wing." Really nice melodic solo that moves brilliantly through the changes. I really hear a lot of Scott Henderson and Oz Noy in Hiram's playing--Henderson might have been an influence on Hiram, but Noy came too late to be an influence, so must be the other way around. Also nice to see the Arsenio-era clothes. :)

I have this on VHS, but it's been a while since I watched it, so thanks for posting. First noticed Hiram on the "Sunday Night" TV show hosted by David Sanborn in the late 80's I think. (I see there are some vids on UA-cam of that show - great stuff). Became huge fan after that, got to meet him once at the NO Jazzfest when he was playing with Sanborn, hung out in chat room on his website - Hey Wasabi, you out there?). It was an honor to know him the little I did and so thankful for all is music. May you Rest in Peace Hiram.

I saw him perform at the long-gone "Front Row Theater" in Ohio, an intimate theatre in the round, running around while playing, and interacting with the audience! I loved this music era and miss it.

Hiram played the guitar solo on a highly underrated Steely Dan number called "My Rival." He was also the lead guitar player on an infamous song called "The Second Arrangement" which was slated to be the first single from Steely Dan's "Gaucho" record but was accidentally partially erased by an assistant engineer after tens of thousand of bucks had been spent cutting the song. You can listen to a re-recording of it right here, but it is to my understanding the redo is nowhere near as good as the original: ua-cam.com/video/4FlQRmYaXiE/v-deo.html

My Rival was the great Steve Khan on the solo. Unmistakeable. Hiram contributed so much to every session he was on. He did provide great solos for a number of Spyro Gyra and Michael Franks tunes. And space Oddity from the Dune album from David Matthews.
