This was not a full size airliner towbar. The towbar involved in the incident was a "2 piece coupled towbar" that is used by hand. None the less, still should not have happened, but in this case theyre lucky it went up with the landing gear without jamming and caused less interference than it could have.

Actually no…this made our news…it was 4ft long and was dragging behind the front gear.
It is common that planes leaving Caldwell for Boise leave their gear down so he didn’t put it up…
Also…there is video from the Boise crash truck showing the bar attached to the plane…

I fly a retractable gear airplane. After my preflight I leave the keys in the open baggage door until I climb into the pilot seat. The last thing I do is pull the plane out, take off the tow bar, put it in the baggage and lock the door. I hate when other people want to "help" by locking my storage and handing me the keys. When you break routines is when things like this happen!

So true. I travel with an RV trailer. Same risk. I never let anyone “help” me disconnect/hookup. External setup and tear down is a one-person task or you will end up not latching the hitch, pulling up a jack, removing an electrical cable, etc.

Memories ... In 1974, I had just received taxi clearance at El Paso International Airport (home base at the time) when I heard ground control ask the pilot of a Cessna 210 if he was hearing a thumping noise from the plane. The pilot said "how do you know that". GC said because your tow bar is still attached to the nose gear. SO ... there were two things I couldn't believe. The 1st, that the pilot had missed the tow bar, and the 2nd, that the prop didn't hit the tow bar as it bumped against the expansion joints in the pavement.
This was only exceeded by my friend in Flint, Michigan retelling a story of how a Lear 25 had taken off but only climbed about 20' before striking trees about 400 yards from the end of the runway. The pilot / co-pilot had forgotten to remove the control lock from the yoke. Guys with years and thousands of flight hours.

I know of a pilot who was practicing short field landings at a 1600 foot strip with his 172. He realized during the landing that he was going too fast /high to land. He must have hesitated too long in his decision to abort the landing because he hit a section of chain link fence at the end of the runway. You'd think the story ends there in a horrific crash. Not this time! He managed to take the top section of tubing from the fence and continued to climb out with it! He was able to fly to the nearest large airport and land with the section of fence hanging off the nose wheel! Upon landing, the whole thing came off the front of the plane. It's a miracle that the fence tubing didn't hit the prop.
I was working as an A&P apprentice at the time. My mentor mechanic went to inspect the plane at the field where it had landed. Turns out this was no small section of tubing. It had folded around the nose strut and part of it was long enough to reach back to the horizontal stab (about 24 feet or so...)! We ended up replacing the whole horizontal stabilizer before the plane could fly again. As far as I know, there was no further damage to the plane but I suspect the nose strut must have taken quite a beating! As a side note... the pilot was the owner of the FBO I was working for!

Day before I taxied onto grass as the only tie downs were cables & hooks in the grass. There was a drop going onto the grass, the nose dipped, I heard a slight "ping" but didn't investigate as I was in a hurry. Back at school next day, our mechanic walked me to the 172 & showed me 1/4 inch shaved off of a prop blade! I had hit that cable or a hook the night before taxiing off that drop to the grass! I flew into a small airport with a restaurant here in Illinois. I just got seated and here comes a 172 taxing up to the restaurant with a tow bar still on. The pilot took off and landed without the bar hitting the prop. The pilot was young and when I went out and told her. Her eyes got big and I bet she will never forget the tow bar again.

Many years ago, I taxied out on an IFR (raining) day for a company flight and noticed a long time friend in number one position about to take off. He was about to take the active in the twin he was flying but I saw that the tow bar was still attached. This was an uncontrolled airport (no tower). I alerted him on unicom. Now , he was a WWII fighter pilot so what did he do? He had his clearance to go. The right engine stopped , he popped out , removed the tow bar , tossed it in the grass, got back in , started the right engine, took off and contacted center. Both of us , being x Air Force pilots never brought it up ever !

This is my home airport. For those who are not familiar with it, the reference to "city side" and "guard side" during one transmission is because the Idaho Air National Guard controls a portion of the south side of the airport. The city of Boise controls the rest. Each has fire trucks. So the comment was that trucks from both sides were responding.
The really scary thing is that the Eclipse would have flown right over my place of employment on the way in -- I'm glad that tow bar stayed put.

I'm a former "hanger rat" (Aircraft Maintenance Engineer unqualified). It was a hanging offence to leave a tow bar connected to an aircraft for two reasons. Firstly, for the reason that you see in this video. Secondly, they're a tripping hazard. Always remove the tow bar and place it either behind the nose wheel of the aircraft or better than that, somewhere else altogether. Even if you're planning on moving the plane in 5 minutes, remove the tow bar.

I have some right seat experience in the EA500. The POH cites the nose gear has a up lock sensor, but nothing for the integrated doors, so the tow bar probably just hung there. Had the gear not locked up, the CAS messaging on that plane is explicit, and the config alarm LOUD. And since the Eclipse is pressurized, I'm guessing he never heard the bar being pushed during takeoff. Since it was hanging down on landing, it probably folded/flipped during derotation, making the greater noise and sensation.
