Unsolicited thoughts: Not sure how old you are, I’m 64. I was an avid backpacker for years, but in my late 50’s, serious health issues my wife was having put the brakes on my backcountry trips. When I got a chance to get away for a day and a half after a couple years of caregiving, I threw my backpack in the truck along with a camp chair, some bacon eggs and steaks, and drinks in a cooler and headed to the NC mountains. Knowing I didn’t have time to backpack anywhere remote, I went to a Park Service campground in the tent area, but I was bummed on the trip up because it wasn’t “real” camping! My experience with their firewood was the polar opposite of yours, and was so old and dry that it burned up in minutes! On the return trip, I came to realize that I’d enjoyed myself, and came to grips with the fact that I no longer had to have thousands of feet of elevation change, trying to find water, and eat freeze dried meals! While I miss those younger years, and remember them fondly, the reality is that we can’t do this stuff forever, and that there’s no shame in, as George Washington Sears (Nessmuk) said, “Going to the woods to smooth it, not rough it!”!

Nice little rig Doug. The Jeep and trailer combo will be perfect when you get away from a regular campground and do a little boondocking. Sleeping warm and dry in a storm sounds like good planning but feels like a five star hotel.

It's great doing the more active and busy bushcrafty, primitive camping thing Doug, but every once in a while a more relaxing, "more civilized" and slower paced outing is what we need for our all around well being. It was good to see you doing just that. Always love your carving projects and hearing your thoughts. Thanks for taking us along. God bless you and your family! 🐀

Good to see you again, Doug. Nice trip, by the way. Thanks for sharing. But I think that maybe what you are missing is the pure wilderness. Also: you are a gifted man with your hands. You are an absolute DIY man, so what you miss is feeling that you can survive by yourself in the wild with what gorgeous nature gives us. To be able to get your own wood, to set a campfire with stones, to fish your dinner and maybe to hunt your next lunch and to cook it with the raw things nature offers. I take it you are not comfortable being comfortable with all those amenities and "civilized" utensils and tools. All you need is a good bushcraft knife, a little axe and of course, as you said... a good backpack. Anyway, as you said... keep going and you'll find the trip that fits almost perfectly in what pleases you and gives you full joy. Don't forget to share it, by the way. We'll be enjoying with you. Again: thanks for sharing and my best wishes and regards.

Hey Doug.I I have said I have been a tent camper all my life.My other half does not like tent camping so we bought a camper.Something is missing.I enjoy it,but I did more camp things when it was the tent. But I'm adjusting to the camper and can still set up and do things around camp.Still like cooking over open fire gathering wood.I do fine the older I get do like the shelter in bad weather. Also to extend your outdoor room.A large tarp over your little camper or even your jeep with supports out gives more room to be out under it if it rains..So many options.Like the camper with the jeep. You'll get your feelers right on what's missing. Its a adventure everytime no matter what 😉 Take Care Pam.Still carving your Littles 1x1x 1or 4 Fun

Great little camper! We love our little teardrop camper I built. Compared to backpacking, it is indeed luxury. Sometimes we backpack, sometimes we take the camper - it all depends on what kind of adventure we're looking for. The camper is certainly more restful. I would recommend an awning or a little pop-up canopy that you can cook under and sit under in the rain. It's also nice for keeping rain from coming in through the camper door when you're going in and out.

Great video. That camper is going to give you the off grid living you like, without having to maintain another house. You really did seem relaxed and rested on this video even if your brain was saying something was off. Your brain is expecting long portages, carrying minimal gear so you can bring your camera gear, and exhaustion from the physical work and the mental stress of setting up shots for videos. Now you can sit by a fire, carve and watch the night sky. That's a holiday. The back country trips are to challenge yourself.

what a great relaxing video. As for cooking in the rain: you can buy those awnings that roll up against the roof, so it's not in the way while driving, and then when you are in the spot, you can pull out the awning whenever you need it (and it comes with the legs folded inside too)

You just never disappoint with your carvings. We toured McGreggar a few years back and actually got to see the bear roaming. We prefer Inverhuron better though. Absolutely adore the trailer. We made a camper out of a 7x12 that holds are kayaks inside while travelling. We love it and get a lot of use with it. You find as you get older you need those extra comforts for your body. Love your videos.❤️

You need to have a small awning to protect you while cooking (and eating). Could be a simple detachable one of some kind.
    An excellent carving Doug.
Even if traveling long distances if you eat simple then it is amazing how far you can go with the minimal of supplies. I recently completed a full loop of Oz 13,000km in just under 23 days, including visits to friends and family and doing volunteer work on a large cattle station for 5 days. The old KISS principle works well for me.
