Still the last time Liverpool lost at Anfield. Marsch should do more of these Interviews where he explains his knowledge and less Interviews of him talking
It is actually fascinating to see how managers put so much thought and effort into their tactics. This Channel is a wonderful channel! Keep on the great work!
Videos like this totally change watching games, because now one better understands what patterns can exist in a game plan to look for. Interesting as well to think of pressing as equally valuable off a weak-link passer. Don’t press the passer, press their pass. Brilliant!
as a leeds fan, this wasn't an outlier, we was always good against the top sides under marsch as we had a good press and they tried to play out, no surprise we got a win
mate.. we were good against teams who didnt realise they could just put a long ball over our terrible defence That Liverpool game was looking like a lucky 1 all draw until summerville bagged a late winner that kept jesse in a job
@@grandmastercultistofben tbf liverpool were trying to get in behind us all game, sure we rode our luck at times (so does everyone that beats a much more talented opponent, remember beating man city with 10 men?), for the most part we didnt give them any time on the ball to play those kinds of long diagonal passes. the win was deserved IMO
Jesse is so passionate about football and obviously he has very deep knowledge of the game I loved his Leeds team and can't wait when he will come back to coaching. This is where he belongs
Absolutely. Marsch should’ve insisted they went through the Chelsea 3-0 game from August 2022. That was literally the only time his tactics worked properly (albeit against a pretty poor incarnation of Chelsea).
@@samluckett8734 we played arsenal off the park too, even though we lost. i would have liked to hear more from marsch about the tactics in that performance
@@oxfamrookie160 Jesse gets a lot of hate because he's an American. I understand some of it, but this man flat out knows his tactics and has a clear idea/way to play.
Same thing I’ve said. We played such good football under Marsch. He got an awful lot of hate because he wasn’t Argentinian or English, but he was a “yank”. I loved every bit of him, we we’re just unlucky with our chances and our fans turning on him didn’t do him any favors
Marsch was very good against better teams where they attacked us, see the games against Chelsea, Arsenal and this one vs Liverpool. Unfortunately our big downfall was we had no idea what to do on the ball if the game wasnt transitional. We won 1 game where we had over 40% posession under him last season, a huge issue especially against the teams around us lower down the table who just played over our press and let us have the ball
You guys needed better CBs...man the CBs you had were dire. Cooper was average, but was injured so much and you guys were playing Llorente who was probably the worst CB in the prem. That CB you got from Austria Wober was pretty good. Once Adams went down though, that was pretty much the end of any protection they had because Roca as good of a passer as he was, he was the slowest 6 I've ever seen lol. Then you had a CB playing left back most of the year(Struik), it was just hard for Jesse to get much production out of your backline. I thought Leeds panicked getting rid of Jesse though, but the fans had completely turned against him and the players. So the ownership had no choice.
I get it. His idea makes sense when you think about it on paper. Only press in areas where the opposition are vulnerable to conceding a goal. Allow the CB with the least amount of composure and an ability to pick out a pass when in trouble to have the ball and close him down quickly. When you win the ball back, don't look to just gain back possession and pass backwards or sideways... go direct and keep narrow. Attack the goal immediately. I get it. The problem is, Premier League footballers are far more technically gifted than what he was used to when he was at RB. I remember when we first got promoted at Leeds and I watched Man City pass out from the box around our players with zero panic. Literally zero panic, it looked like men against boys. You could see the gulf in class. It's far more evident when you're right next to the pitch than it is on the TV. His ideas just don't translate against players who will easily bypass that press with composure and an ability to find passes. I think he would do well at Rangers or Celtic. A league with a lot lower standard of players and teams, get himself a few easy trophies, and get his name back in the mix.
Leeds pretty much played their best against the best prem squads. It was the bottom table teams that gave them problems. Which was more because the bottom teams were more hoofball which exposed Leeds weakness, their CBs and bypassed their press. Man City was the best team in the world, they slapped around most teams.
if he didn't win this game, he would've been sacked on the spot. Lucky to last after this win but it was certainly the last great performance leeds had in the PL before getting relegated. hope Jesse gets a good job soon.
Great coach easy to agree with the comments saying leeds should have given him more time, he would have kept them up. Severely underrated. Butttttt he doesn't seem to know his players abilities too well. This strategy was a tall order for the awful back line they had. And he mentions using Harrison like ten times but in games the guy seemed like he was playing undercover for another team trying to sabotage them or something - dude wasn't doing 1/10th of any of that. It also showed when they played easy teams where they had control. Dude had no idea how to use the players strengths going forward with possession
i agree with this. it's one thing to understand tactics and be a great tactical mind, its another to be a great talent evaluator and understand each players strengths/weaknesses. imo, jesse lacks the latter
His tactics work well on paper, and if he's coaching the best side in a league, but failed miserably in application at Leeds. Honestly I think that this is the game that got us relegated. Its no secret that he was on his last leg going into the match and if we could've used our time during the World Cup to recruit a new manager we would've had a better chance at staying in the PL. That being said, relegation has been a blessing this year. We've been able to trim the fat from our squad and have an actual successor to Bielsa. I would put our current starting 11 against Marsch's squad eight days a week. All the best Jesse, I really think your tactics can perform well in the right league, but the PL certainly is it.
They would have had a better chance of survival if they just stuck with Marsch and didn’t change him for Gracia at least there was some signs of potential progression under Marsch they weren’t continually getting spanked heavily when they lost
Incredible how in the space of 90 minutes, how much genuine tactical thinking and strategic decisions make a different. Jesse Marsch is a solid manager. Very nice video.
I want him too. His tactical setup would fit the USA roster construction perfectly atm. They were dumb sticking with berhalter. US has a very young quick team and all of our strikers are pretty pacy too, which is great for geggen pressing. Our center backs are pretty fast as well, which is great for playing a high line.
Jesse Marsch should've never taken that Leipzig job. That was his first mistake because they forced on him a fidelity to that highpressing Redbull style & limited his attraction to a different philosophy. Futhermore, that fidelity to the perpetual press only works with younger players, as were most of the Leeds team & in the prem, young players never work, especially on the defensive part of the game. Leeds also invested heavily in attackers & left Jesse with shit defenders. I watched almost of the games and those defenders had zero positional sense. Even Klopp had to buy Van Dijk, despite his pressing nous. Lastly, Jesse knows how to talk a good game in a technical sense and this has gotten him numerous opportunities but I am not sure he'll get another chance if he doesn't change his philosophy and be a master of all styles like a Thomas Frank or David Moyes. Sometimes you have to look like a football dinosaur to win prem games a la Sean Dyche. Jesse needs to wait for a job in Germany where his coaching sensibility and tactical inflexibility would work.
That will never happen. Liverpool is going to get established proven manager. They need that to attract the kinds of talent they want to get. Marsch needs to improve his CV first. I'd like to see him at Celtic or Rangers. Those would fit him imho.
For me this is far too complicated. We (Leeds) also got really lucky in this game. Had Liverpool had their shooting boots on they’d have won this 9 times out of 10
Yeah I thought you deserved to beat Arsenal and didn't deserve to win this one. And usually it balances out but honestly Leeds had more bad luck than good last season imo
I dunno. pressing teams tend to create their own luck. That's why you see teams like RB Salzburg continually punching above their weight in the CL. They have no business beating most of the teams they do, but they create the chaos.
One of the bests coaches in the World Football i believe , it reminds me Gattuso or Igor Tudor and also a little bit Antonio Conte for the mighty presentation
This channel continues to be a gem.

The only manager to win an away league game in front of a full house at Anfield since April 2017.
In premier league
Crystal Palace done it now

So much goes into the tactical gameplan that you don't think about while watching game. This channel highlights those to perfection. Great video!
As a Leeds United fan, this man would have kept us up. I would run through a brick wall for this man. Hope he coaches the USA in 2026.

Yep sounds good in theory.
I need that Chelsea Leeds masterclass
Gomez at the time was so so poor
Much improved at LB this season
And Konate is a massive upgrade in terms of quality and physicality
I'd love to hear a candid response to what really went wrong at Leeds. I want to know what lessons he learned from the downfall.

1000x better than klinsmann. Klinsmann wouldn't even understand what he's saying.
