    Hi, yes you absolutely can grow citrus. Keep it in pots, that way you can bring them into your home, greenhouse or makeshift enclosure. I’ve been growing citrus for years here in the mid willamette valley in Oregon. With each year, my girls produce more and more. I have Meyer lemon, lime, bergamot, mandarin, Thai lime,satsuma cocktail grapefruit etc. as they out grow their pots of course I repot into larger ones. I have a Meyer lemon on the ground, she really doesn’t like it and protested by stopping production for one year!!!! She gets s teepee type greenhouse made of thick plastic. When the temperature drops below 33 I put a heat lamp in with her. Ok, now go ahead and get growing 🤩

    I love making fermented foods to eat year round. I used this recipe to make a vinegar. It is great too cook with. I use it for salads,soups and marinades. I also get all of my produce at the farmers market. Blessings and thank you, from Chicago.

    If you don’t have the weights for your bell jars you can fold a big cabbage leaf several times and smush it down into the vinegar and make sure that is completely submerged. Great video!

    I believe I acquired my horse radish roots at Natural Grocers on E Lohman last year. I planted some of them in the garden and they came back this year and are really doing good.

      Awesome! Yah I went to natural grocers and sprouts so maybe it's just not quite time for them yet..

    Is there another base you can use besides apple cider vinegar for those who can't drink it?

    Thank you! I definitely plan on making this… of course, I have questions 😅 1. Would organic crushed ginger work? I froze some last year. 2. Would Homemade apple cider vinegar with the mother be ok?
    I have seriously learned more from you than any other UA-camr. You explain things well without going off in to a tangent like some others do

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm  10 місяців тому +3

      You're welcome. Of course crushed ginger would work!
      As for the homemade vinegar, it would definitely work and that is very cool! The only caveat is storage life. Because there is no way of measuring percentage acidity in homemade vinegars, I would be cautious with long term storage

    Just found your channel. I have a question. Why didn't you use the stalks of the onions you were chopping?

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm  4 місяці тому +1

      Hey there and thanks for joining us! I had saved many of the chopped stalks from both my onions and leeks. And I have an abundance stored in my freezer. I simply didnt need anymore and they would have been better used by the chickens 😁

    Beautiful ❤ I have horseradish in mine and then found that because I have hypo thyroid, I should not use horseradish. It messes with my TSH. Gees! I was so disappointed lol. I’ve been eating horseradish my whole life. 🤦🏼‍♀️ it’s ok. I’ll make myself a new jar and Hubby can have the other.

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm  10 місяців тому +1

      That's interesting! I didn't know that horse radish messes with thyroid function

      @@thefiresidefarm I didn’t either. Lemon balm and echinacea does as well. 😢 From what I’ve read in the books I have so far, horse radish is worse than the other two mentioned above.

    How long can it keep, and do you need to open it every few days to breath and shake it up? What is your recommend dose when sick?

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm  10 місяців тому

      It can keep for several months!....even longer if you refrigerate it. There's no studies done or science on it, so I can't give you an exact amount.

    How long does the completed "tonic" last for in the fridge? Is there an expiration after brewed?

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm  6 місяців тому +1

      You can check around websites and they'll give you a bunch of different information about how long it lasts. I would recommend about 6 months, but the best judge of freshness will simply be your nose or tastebuds. Mine is still good in the fridge as of today, (I dont remember when I made that video off the top of my head).
      If you're worried about freshness then maybe you can just make smaller batches that will be consumed faster. 😁

    I add pomegranate arils to my fire cider. I shake mine every day too. Does it matter if I don’t?

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm  6 місяців тому +1

      It's just good to shake it and make sure there is no mold growth on top from extended periods of the foods being exposed to the air it also ensures everything is being touched by the vinegar so beneficial ingredients can be drawn out of the plants

    Can I use frozen peppers from my garden last year?

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm  Місяць тому

      Yes but the quality may be degraded because of the time. For the most beneficial effect I would recommend fresh peppers

    If you don't like spicy foods could you use sweet peppers instead of hot please x

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm  9 місяців тому +1

      I suppose you could. There is limited capsaicin in sweet peppers. Which is really the chemical you are looking for. But you could always leave the peppers out completely. You can make it however you would like and it will still be good 😁
