Cecil and Kain leaving the castle at the beginning is still one of the most epic moments in Final fantasy. You knew you were in for one hell of a adventure.

I know what I'm about to say is kinda cliché, but honestly, I've played FF4, start to finish, about a dozen times, and I still get chills during that sequence.

Couldn't agree more. I would extend that to all of gaming when you consider the stakes of the scene and the epic music.

This was my very first Final Fantasy game, back when it was called Final Fantasy II in the early 90s for the SNES. This is also one of the first video games I ever played when I started playing when I was 6 years old. This holds a special place in my heart and will always be one of, if not my favorite in the series. I would not be the gamer, nor the person, I am today if not for this game.

I think a lot of people the world over feel the same way about IV: it may not be the most popular game in the series, but nearly everyone agrees that it is one of the most important ones for the impact it had on the industry and especially overseas.

This was my first "real" RPG. I think I was 7 at the time. For some reason, I distinctly remember that blurb on the front of the box saying that you could have four saved games, and I interpreted that to mean you could only save four times EVER. Naturally, that meant I just tried to marathon it for as long as I could to preserve those precious saves, until I eventually just died (which was to, of all the things, the sahagin in the Anna/Edward battle cutscene. I have NO idea how I pulled that off). Thankfully, my (much older) sister pointed out that I was an idiot, and I played it through normally after that.

I know these probably take a hillgigas-ian amount of work to make, huge props. I ran into the channel through the history of 1, 2, and 3 and it made me want to play them on original NES (so thankful for bugfix-only romhacks!). It was so awesome to experience all the details on these videos on the actual games as they were originally, while also knowing who did what and recognizing the vast majority of the names on the credits!
This inspired me to play/replay the whole series in order, regardless of whether i had or hadn't played it yet. I'm a couple of hours into 6 (also SNES version, as i did with 4 and 5, using fan translations of even 4 and 6 to keep close to original experience).
Thanks for all the work! I discovered this channel while being sad about the end of DFFOO and this inspired a more in depth way of engaging with the series that was my introduction to RPGs back when FF7 blew my mind as a preteen. Can't wait to see more episodes as we get through the 16bit era and into 3D and the magical PS1 trilogy!

I have been playing Final Fantasy sine the first game and FFIV has always been my favorite. I have fond memories of renting it with my best friend at the time and playing through it over a summer break (renting it multiple times in a row to do so) and though she is no longer with us I know she would appreciate this coverage of a game we both held dear. I have always felt that FFIV is often overshadowed by other games in the series. Even though they weren't used often, it blew my mind that the town guard, White, Black and Red Mage sprites were reused and seeing them in full 16 bit glory was amazing. Thank you for covering my favorite game and shedding more light on it.

I feel like when we talk about our first final fantasy game, it could bounce between 1, 7 and maybe even 14 or one of the more recent releases.
For myself, it was FF2 (which was FF4). My cousin had all these SNES games that he would let me play and he had FF2 that he had filled out with so many of his endgame saves. He let me take one slot for myself and from there, I just fell in love with the game, the story, the music and just about everything with it. I like to think I jumped into Final Fantasy with the best possible title to choose from.

When I was 10, I rented this game along with FF6 (3 at the time) and absolutely fell in love with this game. I rented it so many times that when the video store closed the owner gave me the game. Even though I know the game is flawed, I love the world and the characters. And it wasn't until I got to highschool and joined the band that I realized just how much I fell in love with the music too. This game will always hold a special place in my heart, and I'll always buy every new release of it to show my support for this gem of a game. I have the same kind of feelings for this game that a lot of people have for FF6, and that'll never change.

I got "Final Fantasy II" because it was on the cover on Nintendo Power, so that print media blitz paid off in my case. The artwork and coverage were so interesting. I rented it a couple of times, but I could only get to the underworld before I had to return it.
Once I owned it, I played it constantly. I ended up making a big Excel workbook with info about characters, items, weapons, armor, magic, and a complete bestiary. I can still recite the white & black magic spells in the order the SNES manual printed them. I was fascinated.
Thank you for making another fantastic video, and about the game that made me a Final Fantasy fan!
In an attempt to make this comment relevant: something to keep in mind when talking about sales of Final Fantasy Chronicles compared to other releases is that it was the first time the original game, rather than just the dummied-up Easy Type, was available in the US. Also, it included Chrono Trigger with new cutscenes, which was a pretty big boost to sales.

It's past 3 am but I was enthralled by this video I couldn't stop watching. I thank everyone who contributed to making and narrating it. A product that is precious memories for many people was a nightmare to make for the creators. Too bad FF4 was made before I've been to this world so I wouldn't know how it felt when it's first released. I liked the bit about children being scared of Amano's work. Me who experienced final fantasy as an adult it never occurred to me how the experience is for the younger generation

FFIV is my favorite game of all time! I'm 38 I've been with the series since the beginning. The overworld theme of FFIV makes me think of my father often who introduced me to games and Final Fantasy. I love Kain, Rydia, and Edge. I'm one of the few I know who really appreciated After Years, not so much for the story, just for the call back and "one more time" with the guys. Much like how time flows in the Fechmarch, I feel like I grew up with Rydia.

Right? How would final fantasy be today if Sakaguchi stuck with mindset to focus solely on gameplay and ignore the plot/characterization. Would ff4 still be received positively, or would it flop? Maybe it would've turned out to be like Zelda, chrono trigger or the first ff, good visuals and battle system but the party memebers are blank slates
Reading how ff9 was the picture perfect of how a ff game should be in Sakaguchi's opinion it's fascinating discovering his earlier vision of how a game should look like

I was thinking about how moving to doing gameplay design and story simultaneously really shows in FFIV. The most obvious would be Cecil becoming a Paladin, his mechanics we're synergistic with his character arc. There's also stuff like Tellah having Meteor but not the MP to cast it until that important story moment, Palom and Porom having the Twincast to give them a mechanic tied to their unique relationship, or the way Rydia aged up from her child to her teenage self which came with some shift in what equipment she wear and becoming a full-fledge Summoner.
Coming from the NES-era where abilities were more-or-less unrelated to what was going on in the game's narrative, the shift in design philosophy definitely made FFIV more memorable as a game.

I've always wondered about the reasoning behind the chibi box art of IV and V, and who did them... I don't know why it never occurred to me it was Shibuya; I mean, they look like the in-game sprites! 🤦‍♂️ I recently acquired a vintage magazine ad for FFIV Easy-Type, it's got that box art blown up to a full two-page spread. 😌👌

Rubicante remains to this day one of THE BEST bosses in FF because even while he was an antagonist, he was still honourable and wanted a fair fight with us at full health. He could easily have flicked his wrist and left Cecil and crew dead on the floor after that trek up the tower, but he decided to fight us fairly.
Left a lasting impression on me

I named so many video game characters “Cecil” when I was growing up because of this game.

Oh how i love the ritual of receiving the notification of the upload of another making of video, pour myself a glass of wine, cast the video to the TV and enjoy the Final Fantasy Goodness.
While I was aware of the initial intention of developing IV for the Famicom, I didn´t knew anything about the details and how convoluted was that of marketing V before IV prior to the cancellation of famicom version. Quite an interesting part of the video for me.

It's so cool to see behind the scenes stuff when it comes to classic games. As a huge SaGa fan (and FF of course) it always makes me super happy when it's mention how well SaGa 1 for Square at the time. Seeing as how we're in a very long coming worldwide golden age for the series it's easy to forget how aside from the Gameboy games the series never took off outside Japan, hell I'm still a bit scarred by the gaming magazine reviews of the PSone titles.

Leave it to Japan to film an ostrich to advertise for a video game, this is so bizarre and funny. Funnier even that it worked xD

The PSP version of Final Fantasy IV is my single most favorite videogame of all time (tho I've mostly played the 1.1 ROM with the free enterprise randomizer most). I'm glad this series got here and will continue.

I'm currently playing the 3d remake of IV, and I'm absolutely enjoying this game so,much.
There are some parts in the game that honestly pulled at my heart strings especially Porom and Palom's sacrifice. Rydia has become my favorite in the game along with Cecil.
Edit: the music and the opening theme are my favorite

The famicom ff4 was 80%?? Come on, righteous hackers of the world, we need a data leak!!
…I mean, I don’t mean anyone should actually do anything illegal, but man it would be cool to see that. How about a lost soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu?

1:26:12 "Máire" (anglicized as "Moira") is not an easy name for foreigners to pronounce, but I'll never understand why so many non-hibernophones (in both the UK and Japan) pronounce "uilleann" as though it had three syllables.😅
