I have both Duo 1 and Duo2. I always keep my second sim in one or the other. I still love it and i agree it is the best productivity device ever. I dont think people ever really understood the fact that it wasnt supposed to be a foldable. It was a dual screen device. Think of dual monitors instead of an ultra wide monitor

I gave it a try its bulky its has sharp edges when you grab it software still has glitches the camera is not bad but the way you access the camera is painful turn it around and tap i would tell people to pass on it

I just broke the screen on my surface duo 2 and it cannot be fixed anywhere I can find......I can buy a used / refurb duo 2 on ebay for about $ 7-900 but its too much for a device that no longer has safety updates. or Android OS updates.......BUT.....it has been the best and most enjoyable tech product I have ever owned...The software has had many repairs over time and the Duo 2 was far better than the original Duo which is still plagued with buggy software...I have owned both devices....Microsoft could have owned this folding category had they not released these devices with bug filled software as the hardware is still fantastic...No crease like these ridiculous current folding phones.. I am tempted to get another one!
I still have my SD1 and loved it when I could use it. I now have a Fold 5 but for multitasking, the SD is so much easier.
I appreciate you doing these type of videos where you give these older devices some flowers in 2024! I would love to see you do a ranking video of your favorite phones of all time. Peace!
Just bought my 2nd Duo 2 yesterday. I love swapping between pixel fold/OnePlus open from time to time.

I'm not sure how. I'm not rough on my devices. Yesterday, the screens died and I have to switch. I'm devastated but will reluctantly move on to either to Pixel Fold or the Oneplus Open.
I'm liking the Pixel Fold's aspect ratio because of all things, it reminds me most of the SurfaceDuo. Microsoft really had something special with this device.
I had this phone twice, but I opted for a Z Fold 3 512gb at $400 instead. The Duo is beautiful but the software is just too buggy. Also only 6gb of RAM is...meh
yeah no. i loved that phone when it first came out, but not now. Does it still work....sure. not using it all these years later.

Spot on! Excellent review. Love my Duo. Still use it almost every day alongside a Pixel 8 Pro. Considered getting the Pixel 9 Pro Fold recently. Wanted to know what other folks thought. Happy to hear others are still enjoying the Duo. No $1800 upgrade in my near future. :)
My experience:
1. No Duo 2 bump is a huge plus
2. Turns out I prefer 2 screens over 1 big screen
3. Google Fi free Sim gives me 5G coverage
4. Camera stinks, but...hence Pixel 8 Pro as my primary
5. Productivity = high, footprint = small
6. I can leave laptop at home 75% of the time
7. Away from home, I can use Pixel for voice/video calls + Duo for productivity especially for note taking
8. Battery continues to shine
9. Perfect e-reader
10. Excellent travel device; plane...trains...autos
Being a frequent, on-the-go traveler, the Surface Duo G1 has been a great travel device for me. It's been a great portable Microsoft Teams meeting device for my business meetings when I'm traveling. I've used it as a music player or audio book connected to a bluetooth speaker.
It's been great as a pocketable e-reader at the airport and a great video consumption device on planes that only have BYOD wi-fi entertainment. The dual screens allow me to sit it on the tray table OR hook it to the magazine pocket / magazine holder bar for plane seats without a seat-back device mount. It's been a great mobile entertainment device for me.
It's has been great for the occasional phone calls I've made on it while I was charging my primary phone. I have a cheap $10/month prepaid phone plan on it with 2GB of data. I've even used it as a dual-screen GPS device using Google Maps when I've driven a vehicle without an infotainment/GPS system.
I like the truly dual screen devices like this. I wish MSFT had released the Surface Neo also, a bigger tablet PC version of the Duo that would have run Windows OS.
I love this device! Still using it, I got it for 199.00 Brand new.

I was so hella hyped when MS announced the SD1 that I bought an old Axon M so I could experience dual screens and be ready for the release of the SD1. I loved my SD1 until MS released an update that bricked it. I couldn't go back to only having 1 screen, so I bought the SD2 (with that awful camera hump). I'm still happily using it today while many of my friends with Samsung Folds have had to replace them several times due to screen crease issues. BTW, MS released another update unbricking my SD1 so now it is my backup phone. Also, because I keep both phones in hybrid cases, it affects both phone's cameras. The hybrid case does a great job protecting the phones, but it doesn't allow the screens to open more than 180 degrees. This makes it impossible to take anything but selfies with the SD1, so I linked an HTC RE camera via Bluetooth and it worked. Oddly, the thickness of the hybrid case leveled out the camera hump on the SD2.
J., I simply don't understand your aversion to the Duo 2's camera bump. It's effectively the same as the bumper case on the OG Duo. In fact, the bumper case was a trial run for Microsoft to see if a camera bump would work for subsequent generations. Using & liking the OG Duo w/ bumper case is the same as using the Duo 2.

Custom OS 12L and about $1600 for 256 gb. 128gb about $1400 also i just got my att Verson Unlock in april I had to have this phone on service for 6 months and nagged att once ever month att did send the unlock code but only way now to get it unlocked is to have ad or activate service on att. thanks for the video love-ya ..... still use this phone every day mounted in my car tunein radio on one screen and google maps on the other when i am driving :)
It's obvious that Microsoft made another blunder when they failed to develop the Duo.
Was it just that their eye was on Azur and profits in the short term or was it another real blunder akin to dropping Windows Phone
I'm still rocking my original surface duo, however as my companion device mostly for media, browsing (internet, ebay, Amazon), email. I also install the GCam app, camera outcome far much better.
The hardware is top tier. Honestly, if Blackberry was still around, this would have been the perfect form factor for them. Overall, this is still the best design for a folding phone.
I always wanted one of these because I was a surface pro user and I was curious about the compatibility. But I opted to stay loyal to Samsung and bought swapped my Surface for a Galaxy book pro.
I am considering picking one up, recently got into stock trading and need a dual screen phone for cheap.. This fits the bill..
I was using Duo 1 almost 2 years and last november (2023) i upgraded to Duo 2 and im enyoing every day. But i miss my Duo 1...

Watching on my Microsoft surface duo and the screen is still crisp and bright. The only thing that let it down, was the camera. 😊
The Duo 2 almost completely overcomes the camera limitations of the OG Duo. I use a Gcam port on my Duo 2 and the pics/vids are very solid quality. If you can get your hands on a well-used Duo 2, I would recommend it.

Go for it, no regrets. It's perfect for home use, but if you plan to use it as a daily driver or care about taking photos with it, go for the SD2 instead.
Definitely a second phone for fun and home use. I'll keep an eye out for deals!

And; as of a few days ago, you no longer have to have an older build of the Xbox app in order for console streaming to work.
Meaning us non-Gamepass people can FINALLY just play whatever local Xbox One/Series game on our Surface Duo, complete with the bottom screen controller. This hasn't been possible until just recently. I'm super glad to still have my Duo in 2024 just to see that.
