The film of Zefirelli inspires and transforms me since I saw it first at a retreat in 1988 in Königsmünster/Germany. The texts of the songs together with the music and the interpretation of Donavan touches my heart and resonates with who I really am.

I had a very short stay at a Franciscan Conventual Seminary in Summer 1991 before I went to College,I was able to talk fo some Friars there who told me after watching the Brother Sun Sister Moon movie that inspired them to join the Franciscans,they have been part of my memories,some of them have left the convent already,some went to Heaven already,and from my batch about 4 are priests now.

A masterpiece by the great Donovan!
Thank you so much for putting this out here. Donovan was not allowed to release it as an album and after trying for many years he ended up rerecording the songs himself in recent years. The owners of the rights to the film soundtrack really need to make this available. There are literally millions of people worldwide who would buy this

I met this beautiful movie and the great singer-songwriter poet Donovan in 1987... I couldn't believe that the soundtrack was not available and here in Argentina I started to investigate and someone told me that at one time in Italy that person had seen it on LP the soundtrack and which consisted of 7 LPs. Something that today I think that person had been confused since I know there was and is a copyright problem. I hope someday this beautiful music that Donovan created based on medieval melodies will be published.

+doves815 Because the rights were owned by the movie producers (or whomever was the owner), Donovan wasn't allowed to release them. He therefore redid the whole album, which is on itunes. I know--bummer!

A spiritual gem...I find it sadly ironic, though, that a wonderful film about such a giving person could not have its soundtrack released, due to "property rights." I think that would have made St. Francis very sad.
This movie introduced me to St Francis and years later I joined the Secular Franciscan Order

Thank you for posting this! Maestro Donovan was at the peak of his creative and performing powers. This recording is far superior to the remake that Donovan did for i-Tunes (due to the bard's age at the time).

Record company people would't let this original music be released, so Donovan redid the songs with just an acoustic guitar, although I've not heard the newer version.

No. That is a shame. If you Google the words"Original Sountrack Brother Sun,Sister Moon 1972" a lot of articles (even Wikkipedia) states that the studio(Ithink it was Paramount) refused (and STILL refuses) to release it. :( :( Maybe people should write to Paramount or whichever studio is responsible for with holding release. And complain!

I had many chores. I was used as a slave- and abused worse than that by far- by my natural family growing up. No child but me had to do anything but me. Ever... it was so much worse. I couldn't have done all that work or my homework (I read most of David Copperfield for the first time in a closet in hiding.) without "stealing food" to eat. I hate peanut butter. The filmmakers didn't release the soundtrack and wouldn't allow Donovan to release it either. He ended up rerecording all the songs himself in recent years and it's available from his website or from Amazon. Probably available from other places too :-)
