I like doing restomods on bikes and one thing I would say is don't junk the parts you don't use like derailleurs, shifters, etc. Somebody will always want them. I usually sell them (if they're still useable) and it helps lower the build cost. In some cases, I've managed to sell the parts for more than the initial cost of the bike itself.
Ive built up a redline monocog as s imple xc machine and its been great! luckily, it still rides with 29in wheels so a lot of the parts I gathered over time still fit on the frame and it rides really quickly. keeping old bikes going can be one of the best feelings knowing youve saved it from going to the scrap yard.
Yes. How did it go - still going strong today (see pic). Only Kenesis frame is original. Nearly an entire Shimano "Mega-9" Deore groupset (but I stuck to staying old school with an 8-speed cassette with non-series 3x8 shifters - yes it's still on triples!), inc. older Deore brakes and hubs. The modernization is the (now getting old) Fox F32 forks and Rock Shox Monarch rear shock.
Nice build Rich! Plus FREE FORKS, HANDLEBARS AND STEM!!! Yeah, well.... I dont know where your local bike shop is, but here in Switzerland the only free thing you can get in a local bike shop is the oxygen you inhale inside of it.
Seriously, are you guys Trolling with this? EVERY time you do one of these videos it involves expensive parts being free. It's kind of insulting to someone who might be watching with a genuine £600 budget. Why don't you do an honest version of this video?
not gonna lie, last year I snatched a pair of DTswiss R470 29" disc wheels for 30 quid but I have to say I have not seen anything even close to that since... I agree with you guys. And as a person who have built up a number of budget bikes I know that unless you spend a year or two waiting for the best value and cheapest parts to show up on ebay and marketplace you will not build a decent bike that cheap :D
@@Obsrvr86118 Like I said, I'm not saying it doesn't happen... I just think a video like this would be much more useful if they used typical used ebay prices. I think a lot of planets would have to align to get wheels at this price, PLUS a free fork, Handlebar etc. I'd way rather see the guy sit in front of ebay and actually buy stuff to use.
Half of the bike didn't count because "it was free", Why even have a money counter if you're gonna strike everything as free? Edit: The forks alone are 175£ wtf???
Yeah. Rebas SL like this would cost you upwards of £100 if you're lucky and you would have to invest in service. You did get a real bargain on wheels, brakes and saddle. I give you that. Then again free stem, free bars... Really? You completely forgot to mention chainring bolts too, as you would need shorter ones. I don't know mate. It all just doesn't seem to be realistic. Looking forward to seeing how you're pulling the dropper out of the hat.
To echo the thoughts of some others in the comments, a lot of the "free" spares are either taken from LBS or the workshop. Alongside that, there's quite a lot of specialist tools (headset race puller for example) used in the video which not every rider has. I'd like to see a version of this video where all parts and specialist tools (or alternatively LBS servicing costs) are bought by the office intern or someone who hasn't been on a video, without 'mates rates' or any 'gmbn fame' discounts. Only the things that most riders have, like trailside multi-tools, could be used without incurring a cost. Even better would be seeing each presenter given the same budget and see what they make. And yes, this idea is basically the same as 'secret shopper' videos from the LTT group for anyone who has watched them.
Agree. My FSR build (comment below) was got pretty spendy after I bought head cup press, a sorta decent ~$70 toolkit with the basics, cheap Amazon not park tools, etc. I did start from a RAW frame, so had to buy EVERYTHING and a couple times you roll the dice on eBay and the thing you get is junk or way worn out.
Easy peasy!!! All you have to do is be the host of a cycling UA-cam channel with about 2M subscribers and your local bike shop will give you stuff for free! lol

I don't get the point of pulling the 3x9 which has a totally superior gear range to that gigantic front ring you put on with a barley wider range rear cassette, I guess you don't climb many hills? Free fork, cmon, rebuild the Tora if its a true budget machine, or find a low cost older pike or something, wheels were good though, I like the concept here, but execution mmmm.

I have never ever ever seen a bike shop for anything away for free. Ever. Let alone a 10 year old working condition 26” fork. That’s a couple hundred on eBay. Believe me I tried to put my old 26” back on the trail and it was cheaper to buy a £600 hardtail than repair it with second hand parts. And blagging a se of handlebars from work? Sure that works if your a cycling UA-cam channel where the parts can be repurposed after this video. It just feels a bit dishonest. Especially after your cheap bike series with £2k bikes. Also where the hell you get a full 1x setup for £117. A flbs will charge you at least £200 for it cos let’s face it most of use don’t have the tools to fit a drivetrain. They aren’t every day tools
i have thought about this with one of my old rigid bikes a 1997 specialized hardrock. my only problem is the age of it being a large frame with a 1" headset i believe. i want to find a set of shocks for the front but so far no luck but i have heard some people are able to fit stuff from modern road bikes on to it to which i would like to try but not familiar with. its only a 18 speed and want to convert to a 3x9 setup for a road bike set up but with a mountain bike body position. what i want to do is have road bike tires on it, 3x9 gearing, possibly fabricate or bolt on disc brakes, front shocks or if i can not find just a more modern rigid front forks. i have gone to my local bike shops for advice to get ahold of parts but they just handed my bike back to me and said its too old and they don't make parts for it anymore and have to find them myself. kind of a bummer. any advice on what parts would fit? is a 3x9 a bad choice or should i choose a more modern setup?
Good build , am currently learning about bikes building up two 27.5 frames . My build skills not as good as yours especially when it comes to crankset builds and fork servicing. DEFINITELY RACE THE BIKE THAT WOULD BE GREAT
Instead of throwing in free parts (does not happen in real life) , the fork and brakes could just have been fully serviced. 1x drivetrain makes sense, dropper is a must, angleset would be great but looks like this Scott has integrated headset so it's no-go (?) In your next build, why don't you start with a frame that allows the use of angleset. Do a really slack vintage fully with both angleset and offset bearings!
I find it really sad that most people are quick to get rid of the front mech. 3x may not be too cool but 2x are definitely still very cool. So much in fact some pro racers still use 2X
I love this video and would love to see you do one of your long rides. Mountain biking doesn't have to break the bank and can be just as fun on an inexpensive build!
On "this side of the pond" You can get a Specialized Rockhopper base model new for under $500 right now. Note, I'm a little biased, but seems like a good starting point for a new bike with warranty that has tons of aftermarket upgrade possibilities.
most people simply won't have access to free parts. the free parts should be given value for a more realistic price estimate. i love the video concept tho, i enjoy building on a budget.

Good build , am currently learning about bikes building up two 27.5 frames . My build skills not as good as yours especially when it comes to crankset builds and fork servicing.
DEFINITELY RACE THE BIKE THAT WOULD BE GREAT
Love the old school bike!! You should race it- I’ve done plenty of races on my 2012 steel frame hardtail.
I would have converted to a 1X9 and used the same shifter (upgrading the cassette). The money saved could have been used for the dropper.
I still rock an original scott scale 10 2008 and love it same colour scheme just carbon
26" climbs well and turns tight on smoother trails.
Yes. More of this bike. Please! And take it on everything!
Anyone else noticed that they displayed a 11speed chain on the B roll although this is a 10speed drivetrain?
YES, RACE IT.
Anyone best place to get secondhand MTB parts, also I got free forks from chain reaction
Maybe better a 29 cheep built be just what I need, nice Rich
How mant theet the Chingring??
I can't be the only person who still regularly looks into dumpsters just to make sure there aren't any good bike bits in them? :-)
Some are actually fitting 700C wheels on their 26er MTBs calling it a hybrid.
I find it really sad that most people are quick to get rid of the front mech. 3x may not be too cool but 2x are definitely still very cool. So much in fact some pro racers still use 2X
LOVE this video! More videos with this bike please!
I got a new xc hard tail for 500
Post a part list and prices as text pls
Would like to see old trail bike vs modern XC/DC bike
Hey look, my bikeshop wants to toss a fork and handlebar as a trash, and i ask them if i can have it.😂
I love this video and would love to see you do one of your long rides.
Hey Rich good video...but 26" XC 🤔 only if you like classics. 29" required for decent XC these days! But good idea for a DIY project!
Rich, why you U.K. pips route the rear brake on the left hand? Cause you know well that we on the "main land" put it opposite, that is why am askin..
most people simply won't have access to free parts. the free parts should be given value for a more realistic price estimate. i love the video concept tho, i enjoy building on a budget.
Bangers that Rich 🤙🏻🤙🏻
