I worked at Lockheed as a security officer. On the day that they retried the Sr-71. A sR-71 took off from the base in Alaska it flew to the Lockheed plant in Goregia for their lunch hour did a fly bye. Then flew to the Lockheed plant in Burbank, CA. Fir our lunch hour. Did a fly bye there all in the same day. I watched the plane as it flew by. The pilot hit the afterburner and a flame about three foot long came out of the engines as it took off into the sky. What an impressive sight.
@@MilitaryVehicleReviews it was an impressive sight. I also believe that the marking on the left side of the plane behind the cockpit. Are for the missions they flew. Also FYI the SR-71 was originally going the an inercepter instead of a spy plane. I also understand that during an flight over north Korea. The Air defense of North Korea tried to shot down the plane with a sam missile. The SR-71 just hit the afterburner and was gone, needless to say that the missile missed.
@@MilitaryVehicleReviews years before the sr71 entered service a u2 spy plane was shot down over Russia and the pilot came out and fell to earth with no parachute and sadly he died
Lovely model! Guess someone needs a Vandy F4 to match! I don’t usually like pilots because I like to imagine my planes in a museum setting, not preparing for flight.
This is super cool! Super cool detail, it's crazy to me how much detail people can squeeze into small models, only getting better/higher quality details as the size goes up.
Awesome kit, most difficult plastic kit to build so this would be excellent buy. SR 71 was last aircraft made without computers. Ironically the titanium was purchased from Russia. RAPID RABBIT was lost in July of 1972 while attempting to land at Kadena So this very collectible. . The guy in back is actually the RSO Reconnaissance System Officer. This would have been a Vietnam era aircraft, the other base were based in Udorn Thailand. The wheels were titanium and aluminum "combo" to dissipate the heat in flight. I'd definitely spend by beer money on this one.,
@alisonleaman333 due to the way the aircraft landed, The center of gravity was so far back that you had to " flare" { keeping the nose up), the landing at relatively high rate of speed which heated up the main landing gear, by the time the nose wheel touched down your speed was reduced enough it didn't heat up as much. You needed a long runway to land . This also keep the weight of the aircraft down, every ounce made a difference in performance It was the last aircraft designed primarily with slide rules. The titanium used was actually purchased from the Russians through a shell company Hope that helps.
Great video mate. I have the "Night Hawk" SR-71 by Century Wings. They are a solid build and the satin black is done beautiful. I personally am not a fan of those stands, Forces of Valor is a similar style aswell. Great review, cheers from OZ 🤣👍
Congratulations on this famous plane and this version looks very well detailed. I thank you for the videos you make of the airplanes and the time you invest in them.
There are many informative videos on the SR-71. One of the best is the recent post by, Animagraffs, 'How The Locheed SR-71 Blackbird Works' using 3D graphics to aid with the commentary.
I don't know why but when I was little, I used to love this so much! Now that I know my jets and all that stuff it isn't my favorite but still one that I really like, Amazing Video, keep up the great work. Every time I see an Aircraft review from you I get excited because I like fighter jets so much. I just don't like when you don't say where you get it. I recommend putting the aircraft link in the description so if people like the model they can buy it without searching for it.
It is an AMAZING jet. It definitely served its purpose and honestly probably shouldn’t have been retired. Unfortunately, this model was a limited run and is not sold on most websites now. You can find a couple on eBay though. If you want to buy another version you can check out www.flyingmule.com Thank you! I appreciate you watching. 🫡💯
That aircraft was in service when I was born, and still looks beautiful, same cannot be said for me now lol. lovely model, I seen the real thing at Duxford, and it needed a good dusting.
That’s a good looking model going to get one to hang above my train layout catching up on your videos can’t wait to see more your Doing an OUTSTANDING JOB
Century Wings do make a good model but has forever been plagued by the two major issues of the seam in the fuselage halfway down and the incorrect engine inlet spikes. By now it is doubtful they will correct their tooling, and AF1 while also good also happens to have major flaws. I hope one day Calibre Wings decides to do the Blackbird, in all metal and proper scale correct features such as panel lines or rivets.
I’m tempted. If I did, I’d have to do something about where the front and rear sections join. Maybe tape it off and put some quick dry black sealant in there. The canopies aren’t a problem, they’d stay in place with some bluetac. And I’d probably swap the aircrew over for some scale figures, and paint them myself.
@@MilitaryVehicleReviews It’s an incredible aeroplane. The faster it travels, the less fuel it uses. At Mach 3.3 the fuselage becomes translucent due the the friction of air passing over it. It glows red hot, and you can see the engines and airframe through the fuselage. The fuselage itself expands a foot in length. The glass on the canopy has to made from quartz and gold to so it doesn’t melt. And its intense to fly, the pilot has to constantly keep checking instruments couple of times a minute. A malfunction and the pilot would lose control in seconds. A Korean SAM got within 3 miles of bringing an SR-71 down. Due to the closing speeds involved, it was classed as a near miss!
I think the black bird actually had different noses the could swap out,not sure if it separated at the same point as in this model but if it did that gap could make it actually little more accurate.good looking model for most part.
Fun fact the sr 71 black bird's wheels are made with rubber and aluminum and the panels are fitted loosely because it would get so hot the panels would expand

Best diecast SR71 Blackbird available. I got the Nasa and the Skunk Work versions
I agree! I was looking at the NASA model since I have one of the NASA U-2’s from Hobby Master.

Why was the "combo" not needed on the nose wheels...? Thanks.
