    We've got one of those at work - and it's a great machine for a small office environment. In enables 'ordinary' people to enjoy decent coffee with a push of a button. At the same time - the more 'nerdy' coffee enthusiast can play with the technique and the settings. The machine seems quite reliable too - ours is almost two yers old, and with regular cleaning and descaling it hasn't given us any problems.

      The secret to great coffee is the beans or ground coffee you use, good quality, and also either a mix of two or three types of beans. I use a stovetop Percolator, I think in America they call them Moka Espresso Pot. This method takes longer, however, I think it does a better job of making better-tasting coffee espresso than the machines.

    • @sabbathunlimited
      @sabbathunlimited Рік тому

      @@Mav_F Thanks for this tip! Sadly, I don't have a gas stove top as it's not allowed in my condo. I use an induction cooker instead, and I've tried using a moka pot on this cooker and it was terrifying to determine when it was time to take the pot off the cooker. There was a time the pot made a booming sound because there was too much pressure, I think? I also burned myself a couple of times. So umm I will be staying away from moka pots for some time. 😭

    • @Mav_F
      @Mav_F Рік тому

      @@sabbathunlimited Oh not good. By the way, you can put it on any type of stovetop. You turn off the stove just before the coffee reaches the bottom of the Spigot hole if you put enough water in it. You should hear it coming up, not sure what the boom sound was. (Don't leave it on the stove or while it's not coming out anymore or you will burn the rubber and then it's not good anymore to use). You can use a teatowel to remove it from the stove carefully and then stir the coffee with a teaspoon to mix it properly then slowly pour it into a cup. When you aren't used to it, it can be difficult. I was brought up with it as a child as my parents are Italians.

    After watching this video, I have bought this machine and I am very satisfied with it. That is the best machine I've ever had before.
    However I would like to tell about a little tip in order to better optimize its use.
    The filter is made in a cylindrical shape on its upper part and then takes a conical shape in its lower part.
    I found that it was preferable to fill the filter with coffee so that once pressed, it does not exceed the line which separates the cylindrical shape at the top from the conical one at the bottom in order to avoid problems with the filter holder engaging the machine.
    7g of coffee like it is indicated on the user manual it's Ok, but 14g for the 2 cups filter, it's a little too much, I encountered problem with the filter holder engaging the machine with this quantity of coffee.
    Hoping that this little tip could be useful to someone.

So I've playing with both portafilters and different grinds with good coffee beans. I found I was tamping too hard at the start and also had too fine of a grind using the 7-8 clicks recommended on the C3 pro for espresso - The portafilter popped off from pressure. @@genciestebanez1314i have the dedica and just got the k4 and a bottomless non pressurized basket portafilter. Can you help me by telling me why the extraction time increased to 75 seconds ? Compared to the normal around 25 seconds that the machine is pre programmed to run at when pressing the double cup option? I didnt change the settings on the machine yet. Should i just program the dedica to stop extracting when i reach the 2:1 ratio?

    • @genciestebanez1314
      @genciestebanez1314 8 місяців тому +1

      @@crabbynebula well, you have total control of the running time of the extraction. I usually use the single basket with 10-11 grs of coffee aiming to get a 1:3 ratio in around 30". So 33 grs of yield. And I always use the single cup buttom. For me the 1:2 ratio is quite a strong coffee, even with medium roast beans. Use a scale, it's your best friend to calibrate your espresso. Try always to use the same amount of coffee, and grind to get the ratio you like in 25-30". You can use the double cup buttom of the Dedica, but you´ll have to stop it once you get the desired yield. Once you know the time your beans need for the coffee you like, you can program it to stop at 25", 30" or any other time.

      @@genciestebanez1314 thanks a lot for the info. My mistake...i wanted to say 75 grams not seconds. I finally switched to a more fine grind and now i get a better result. However, I still use a higher setting than what other people report when using the K4 (73-75 clicks) and i am curious why is that. Is it the coffee maybe that influences this? Other people usually say they dont do more than 65 or 68 clicks with the k4. I am curious if i could somehow test whether the coffee beans i currently have are good eg freshly roasted enough

    I bought a bottomless portafilter with a normal basket and I think that actually the bottomless portafilter wasn’t really necessary, the espresso has the same taste only with the non pressurised basket on the original portafilter. I tried both and actually think that the original portafilter fits much more tightly the machine . I want to actually buy a two way portafilter like in the professional machines. And can do two single coffees as well if I want to. My machine is Delonghi Icona 15 bars, I have also Alessi Cuban 8 bars and this one really makes much nicer espresso !! With the same grind and coffee as Delonghi it produces more cream and fills the cup slowly not like the Delonghi ,can berely reach 20 sec. The machines play a big role for a good coffee .

    Hi Tom, I think that when reviewing this machine, you and other UA-camrs should really stress, that while all these accessories and techniques can be nice and make your overall experience better, it (at least from my experience) only applies to Dark roasts and pre-ground coffees but definitely not for specialty. Even when paired up with Breville Smart Grinder Pro I had a very frustrating time when trying to brew specialty medium roasts with it no matter what I tried. I've since graduated to Gaggia and will actually be picking up Breville Dual Boiler today so I've experienced that journey and would just want to warn somebody planning on brewing specialty with this to save up a bit more and get something better right off the bat instead. Hell, I might even make a video comparing the three haha. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work.

    Hallo Tom,
    Thanks for making these videos, they really help with the Dedica! You inspired me to buy one EC685, however I have some issues with the coffee it makes.
    Grinder: Timemore Slim Plus (E&B burrs)
    Setting: 7 (kinda dangerous for the blades)
    14 g coffee, 2-3 months old, medium roast from Vietnam
    Bottomless portafilter with IMS 14g basket, warmed up, dried.
    Clumps broken up by a toothpick. I hit the bottom of the portafilter gently to the counter to increase puck density. Then I tamp.
    In 20 seconds more than 30-35 g of liquid goes to the cup with very slim crema. The taste is waaaay too sour. It’s bad.
    What else can I do to slow down the water flow? I cannot grind finer, you know it, as we have similar grinders.
    I tried with different beans, but i wasn’t lucky with those either.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Рік тому

      Hi Peter, what market are you in? Maybe I could suggest some beans. Anyway, are the Vietnamese beans a lighter roast? You can try the steam mode hack.
      What else I found with the Timemore grinders is, that they don't grind consistently if that inner burr has too much play. Have you seen my recent video about shimming that up? It has helped the extractions to look much better.
      But back to the crema, that has mostly to do with the bean, and a fine grind. I might suggest a local roaster, just get 250 grams of beans 2-3 weeks off roast.
      Cheers!
      Tom

When I use a pre-grind beans for a French Press or have it myself with my Hario Skerton Plus, the machine is working fine. However using a freshly roasted and grind beans for espresso machine happen to clog it. With the later, I have to tamp it very firmly to have a flow.

    Hi Tom, very good video! I have been using a dedica 685 for the last 2 months with pretty much OK results. I have been using both ESE pods and freshly roasted beans, but for some reason it seems that the extraction is better with the pods. There it takes around 23 sec to get the espresso and one can see water flows at decent flow rate while when grinding the beans myself it flows much faster (10 -12sec). Have tried grinding a bit finer but today the coffee felt really acid even though beans were roasted last week and smell pretty amazing in their bag. How fine is fine? I used a Hario mini slim plus with 3 "clicks". Should I start playing with water temperature? Or have more coffee to slow it down a bit? I'm using 9 grams per cup with default settings from ec685.
    Also does your steamer provides constant steam flow? In mine the pump makes a loud sound every second and the steam flow follows that pattern. I didn't hear that sound in your video so I wonder if that's normal. I can't get decent creamy milk for cappuccino i mainly get milk with lots of foam 😢

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  2 роки тому +5

      Hey Andres, thanks for watching, and thanks for your thorough comment!
      I have not used the Hario Slim, but for espresso you need a very fine grind, and ideally a consistent one.
      What size basket are you using, a single or double? 9 grams is fine for a single, but a double needs 14-16 grams.
      Extraction temperature will have an impact on taste (sourness or bitterness), but you first need to try getting a 2:1 ratio in 20-25 seconds.
      My steamer works fine...you just need to find the right angle to get a swirl going. Cheers! Tom

    I own one of these machines. It is great for just having morning coffee. It is not the greatest but it is way better than going to a coffee shop every morning. I recommend it. And if you live in NYC metro, Cerini coffee on Arthur Ave, can fix your machine for around 100 or so when the pump breaks. Which it will break. So it is worth repairing at least once

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  2 роки тому

      Hello Scott! Thanks for your comment. Actually it is normally the OPV Valve that goes, not the pump. But those can be bought for $5, and switched out yourself if you are a little handy. I made a video about it: ua-cam.com/video/ncoZ3XyhWC8/v-deo.html
      But yes $100 for an overhaul in NYC is a good option too. Cheers!

    Like everyone else, great video. A simple and complete explanation for all of us Dedica owners. Finally, you compare the Dedica filter and the porta filter. I use Lavazza espresso italiano, when using the porta filter, cream never comes out, only coffee that doesn't even look like yours. The porta filter is of the brand Neouza / Amazon. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the answer 👍

    Thankyou for your video..
    I have watched many.
    The main reason is I had a lot of trouble programing the machine.No one ever mentions this.And thats important to get it right.
    Quite often the steamer stops too soon.Or if your not careful you get hot water going into your milk.
    And it dilutes the coffee.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  2 роки тому

      Hello Kath! Yes, programming the machine is important, and not that intuitive. I made a short video about it here, for your reference: ua-cam.com/video/M8NBbSyHDO0/v-deo.html
      Purging the steam wand is important too, to not dilute the milk. Cheers!

    so after watching the whole i gotta say very nice vid ! i own a dedica EC685 and what i did was to saw off the bottom part of the portafilter so i get a fully open portafilter and then replace the "double bottom" filter element (where the lower has just a single small opening to make fake crema) with a normal one with the standard amount of hole4s.

      I’m guessing that your beans are probably too old - or in other words roasted too long ago.

    Hi Tom! I bought everything, also i did modifying delonghi kg.521 for espresso. I tried to make espresso with lavazza, but I could not! Flow was too fast😢 Then I found local coffee roaster(in Kazakhstan), bought fresh Italian blend 80/20 arabica/robusta, tried it and finally got a perfect espresso 18g coffee 25seconds, 36 grams espresso. That is amazing, wanna say thank you, because of your massive content about that machine!

    1. What is the theory behind the “two pitcher method “
    2. When you remove the panarello , does that mean that you can only steam the milk and not just heat it?
