It would be useful to discuss footwork, momentum and timing. Particularly in the elderly, where mobility issues, weakening limbs, and problems with balance may occur, it is vital that someone using a cane as a weapon understands how the movement of their upper body and arms needs to be reflected in the movement of their legs and feet. A strong swing that is not supported by a well placed lower body may well result in the defender tumbling themselves to the ground. While the weight of the cane itself is inconsequential, rapidly moving the mass of the arm and upper body can develop considerable momentum that must be accommodated if the action is to be safely completed. Likewise, the power of the stroke is related to the timely movements of all parts of the body. I would recommend to you the writings of George Silver. While this gentleman wrote his treatise on the use of the backsword rather that the cane, his discussions of body mechanics, momentum, timing and geometry are precisely parallel to the use of the cane as defensive weapon.

I recently had an old back injury rear its ugly head while I was traveling. I needed to use a cane for better mobility, but realized I must now look like a target?!?!? Not a great target at 6'3" and 230, but obviously my age would be a factor. I went online and found this site, and have since ordered DVDs and a cane. A big part of self-defense is the confidence, ( or lack of it), you transmit in everything you do. How you walk, talk, and feel about your situation shows. This will put you back where you want to be.

I had never heard of cane defense until I read the article about Mr. Mellon in Shipmate. Now I'm fascinated. BTW, to Mr. Melton, congratulations on all of your life successes and thank you for your service.

WOW! I've carried a Pakistani Golden Hickory Cane Masters Cane since the early 2000's and love it. I knew Mr. Melton from doing some security work for him - never had any idea he was into self defense - our family was instrumental in Judo and Jujitsu in our region - it would have been great to workout with him. I still display the autographed book Clandestine Warfare he gave to me.

Thanks for posting this . A friend of mines elderly father stopped a young drunk guy from assaulting him with a hard straight jab to the chest . It took all the fight out of him.

'be good on both sides.' Also work both sides to prevent asymmetrical injury. You should start training your weak side then match on your strong but don't go beyond.. 💪💪🙂

Excellent presentation Sir and i sincerely look forward to part 2 and more. Please keep up the good work. I'll be purchasing a cane from you in the very near future. It's disappointing that here in the UK i cannot find a distributor of your fine canes, similarly no cane self defence classes. Maybe i should start saving and come to Florida for a working holiday. Keep up the good work, and all the best from West Yorkshire UK.
    Kindest Regards,
    Dale.

I respectfully disagree with not targeting the head or trying to hurt your attacker. If you need to defend yourself things have gotten serious enough that you need to have the highest probability of success. There are many videos of police officers getting overpowered after an unsuccessful pain compliance technique with batons. I do like your product and videos sir no disrespect.

Hi there, thanks for sharing your opinion and insight. Doing self defense tactics are case to case basis. What matters most is having a proper knowledge and skills in using canes for personal protection. You can email us at info@canemasters.com if you need anything.

Completely agree. 100%. As I see it the ONLY downside to targeting the head / neck area is the instant response to protect them, from the attacker. Target the place that ends the fight fastest.
And preferably, use a gun from distance if possible. A mobility limited person, who might also be weaker.... If they are trading blows with an attacker, it's TOO CLOSE!

Does anyone know if a sheleleigh (sp) is approved by the Anerican's with Disabities Act? My mother NEEDS a cane. She is insisting on an Irish Blackthotn sheleleigh. I want one after watching some of your vids! question is open to anyone, I tried to google it and ended up reading about "sheleleigh law" whiich as you may know is an entirely different thing. Interesting read it was though. question open to anyone, in MI if that matters.

Hi Patricia! It would be best to use the shaft when striking since the crook would help also for a better grip just in case the cane slips from your hand. You can email us at info@canemasters.com if you need anything.

If my (or anyone around me) life is in danger I won't be using my cane. But these are very, very good things to know if you walk with a cane and aren't in imminent danger or live somewhere your rights are infringed. My cane is also triple wrapped carbon fiber. It's ridiculously light and strong. If I'm put in a position of having to defend myself bet your bottom dollar I will be looking to do the maximum damage in the shortest period of time. FOFA!

Yahshua - you know Him as Jesus - was born to a virgin, turned water to wine, taught, healed the sick, raised the dead, casted out demons, walked on water, calmed the storm, and fed a crowd of thousands with a few fish and a few loaves of bread, among many other things. He was killed on the cross as payment for the sins of all mankind, three days later He rose from the dead. Forty days later He ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father. He is returning very soon, but before He does, Satan, the devil, is coming to pretend to be Jesus/God (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4). Satan is an angel, and he will have certain supernatural powers with which to try to fool everyone. He will, for example, be able to make fire come down from heaven in the sight of men. He will only be on earth a short time before the real King of Kings, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, returns. When the real Jesus comes we will all be transformed into our spiritual bodies at the same moment. Jesus came in the flesh to offer forgiveness of sins and eternal life to anyone who believes and calls on His precious name!
if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. - Romans 10:9
Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. - Matthew 26:6-13
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon....
To anoint your self, the sick, or a building for spiritual protection:
Get a small bottle of olive oil and pour off a small amount into a smaller vessel like a vial or baby food jar. Use the rest of the bottle for cooking. Ask the Lord to bless your vial of oil in Jesus name. Anoint yourself with the oil by placing a dab of oil on tip of finger and touch it to your forehead, and ask the Lord to bless you/heal you. To anoint your home or other building: place a dab of oil on your finger and anoint the door posts and order all negativity and evil out of the house, and order that nothing negative or evil can enter into your home including piggybacking on a person entering, order it to be so in the name of Jesus. Anoint all potential entrances to your home. To anoint the sick: place oil on tip of finger and touch it to the head of the sick and say a prayer of healing over them in Jesus name. See James Chapter 5:14-15...........,.

You don't want to hurt them??? So you can get away and they can go away and do it to someone else?? I think not. Disable them so they can't hurt anyone else. Better yet carry a gun.

If you carry a gun, you better have money for a lawyer and bail, cause youre going to jail while they figure out what kind of person you are. A cane and a head of gray hair, not so much.

@@maniagokm3186 Every shot down range has a lawsuit attached. True. But you have to be alive to worry about that. I agree with the OP: if it's that far out of control, gun first if you can.
