I am an80 year old retired coast guard officer. I have bilateral hip replacements and a spine fusion at l5 and my sacrum. I was going to go out and buy another pistol until I saw this video. I use a decorative foldable metal cane so I can walk. I will purchase a wood cane now and not feel so vulnerable out in the world anymore.

I am a 73 year old Tae Kwon Do first degree BlackBelt, who, for various reasons, has become somewhat inactive in Art. Since leaving the school from which I studied, I've become less motivated to continue my training which I greatly regret. The spark has, for the most part, all but died! Having just watched your presentation, I've come to the conclusion that a study of Cane Self Defence is something that I would enjoy learning and practicing. Thank you.

Great Class and a good reminder of simple measures we can take in scary moments. Now that the average age of people in USA is late 40's, cane mastery is more relevant as a handy and practical skill to learn. It doesn't require ammunition or batteries, no license needed, no moving parts to maintain, and it's TSA approved. It only takes respect & effort. Thanks!

I'm a decrepit old disabled man that carries a cane to help me keep my balance. Nothing wrong with my walking, but the cane is pointed in the direction I'm falling in...and I push off, to keep from falling down. I've watched your video Avery few months, to keep the techniques fresh in my mind, in the event some Perp decides he wants to attack an old stumble-bum old man. I'd be willing to bet that if that happened, knowing your training, it would be a life-changing event for the Perp! He either changes his ways or goes and buys himself a DRESS !!!
Thank you for your combined ideas and demonstrations.

    Very interesting comments.All valid!
I believe a well practiced attack with a cane, which is coming from below to up, can be highly effective because of its shock value, stopping power, and the ability to follow up quickly at a safe distance. This is based on my experience with fighting sticks, staffs, batons, and canes. More importantly, It is legal to carry and allows an individual, especially older folks, a sound method of protecting themselves. Simple body mechanics, minimal training, and the low cost makes this a discipline available to most people. Doing something is better than becoming a victim, even if you are still victimized. With the lack of respect for the individual escalating at an alarming rate, It is imperative that people take responsibility for their own safety and protection. If you are going out into this world anywhere you should be prepared.
Fight the Good Fight Every Moment. Every minute. Every hour.
    Ya'll take care out there.

There was a very old martial art style in France called Savat, and it was like kickboxing with a cane. Had French leadership realized its significance, it could have progressed French fighting far. I have included cane in my martial science system. The cane as they are saying because you can carry it freeely, is of special significance. Learn to utilize the weapons around u - if in the home would u grab the numchucks before the katana? How about anything before the gun? So around u before the gun gets the shot off, is a broomstick, a rock, a stick, as bottle or glass, a kitchen knife... the pen... it is mightier than the sword... I taught my guards with the pen in their front suit pocket how to drive it into the side of the neck in the most prestigious places in the city. This is a good show here. That big dude is a warrior nut! love the dude.
there is a weapon to put on ur key chain called a Kubotan - sensei Kubota from Shotokan
When it comes to fighting technique that they are talking - who has lengthy melee weapons these days short of a broomstick? So in historical fights, Miyamoto Mushashi was only tied once with a fighter using a bostick - long enough to counter his blade - so a cane as they say is a great "tool" to counter modern local threats.

I’ve always thought of the cane as a bayonet, first, club, second, then do what you can to stop or change his attitude, while making an exit. Awareness of my surroundings, is number one defense, cane will give me distance to exit situation and time to get to my firearms. A nice smile & friendly personality may keep you out of bad situations! I’ve never been in a good fight, that didn’t involve blood & pain. Be nice, be helpful! Get a strong cane!

People out there: be careful not to get over-confident from watching this video. Now, I'm not giving you a bio or attempting to brag in the following comment. I"m giving you some true, real back ground of mine thst qualifies me to make the statement about warning you: do NOT get over-confident from this video. I started martial arts from being trained by a WWII Navy combat veteran jiu-jitsu practitioner who had killed people during his time, then judo, kyokishinkai-kan became a black belt after that. I had been a criminal as a youth and a fighter, so bad, they wouldm't accept me to enlist in the Army. I then petitioned to clear my name, won and joined the police in the toughest city in America. We were trained mostly by 3-war Marines. I become a street cop in a special crime unit who had at least 250-275 fast fights to take down criminals, had about 25 private long fights-- average a 1 to 3 minutes--scattered throughout youth and adulthood losing 5 , winning 20. I also had a couple of "only one" walks away--with no body around. I'm still here. I have never, never started a fight. I've been cut, hit so hard a couple of times that my brain stem moved, etc. Never badly hurt because as I used to teach my students that I trained," you may not win every fight, but you'll avoid getting hurt if you're well- trained." But they won most and I trained a kid who became a National Tae Kwon Do champion. I became a Dept. of State Advisor after that. I trained with many improvisrd weapons. Used them too. In the streets there are gang members , ex-cons, bikers and even some office workers with tempers who are tough. If that old man calling himself a grandmaster ever got attacked by a gang member in LA, Chicago, New York, Atlanta or in rural America; they would make him eat that cane. The problem with at least 95% of martial arts "masters" is they have never been in one real fight. And 99% haven't been attacked where the guy is trying to kill them. I have. Many other guys have ,especially those gang members I mentioned. As far as the large bald guy, he is big and should be trained enough to punch the heck out of somebody. But some big huys just don't have it. I've know a few 5'6" dudes who could handle 2 or 3 opponents in street fights. You never know. But what you need to know is if you try whipping someone with a cane--say a guy who grew up with his dad punching him in the face every night, then becoming a street thug; he will just look at you. As a cop--and many cops will attest to this-- I and they have had to hit some criminals so hard on the head with the hardwood nighstick that the stick cracked and the criminal kept coming. Subdued with a black jack or gun butt. That is thr type that is out there. " Whipping " with a cane that has a poor weight/length ratio is insane. I also was certified as a cop in Dr. Koga of Japan police baton training. There are ways to use a 36" cane. But these people aren't showing you correctly. And that knob cane B.S. is just that: B.S. In Calif. yes, as they'll bother you for carrying a straw in your pocket. Nobody is going to arrest you for carrying a heavy knob cane. Intent and use is everything. You can carry a large vise grip on you and do a lot of damage. You won't get pinched. But use them to open up someone's temple and the you will. And a comment herein was sensible: the cane can and eventually will make you a target. Teddy said: " Speak softly and Carry a Big Stick" that does NOT mean to show it.

The secret is to tell the attackers how much you paid for your magic cane. At this point, they either freeze in disbelief or fall to the ground laughing. This is when you bust out some of those dope moves...
"How you like me now? Got some Yip Man for yo' ass!"
Real proficiency with any weapon develops only with time and dedication. This "Master's" cane, and a false sense of security against someone with a little bit of training and or simple street smarts and you'll wind up with $300 worth of splinters from your rectum to your tonsils. Then you'll have to buy that Master's magic toilet paper they just happened to mention. And then...
"So, Yung Fool..." "Your Kung Fu is strong! But not strong enough. It's time for your next lesson. Show me... LICKY BALLS! NOW!"

I've gotten so many positive comments on my initial comment to this video that I thought I should make another. One that probably could have been included in my initial comment. Before anyone decides to arm themselves with any impact weapon or knife, there is one thing they should already know..... They should know how to fight! Yes it's true. An impact weapon can greatly augment the striking power and effectiveness of someone who already knows how to fight. However, simply having a weapon does NOT in anyway make up for not knowing how to fight. If you do not know how to fight and attempt to use a Cane or any other stick, Unless you get lucky, you will most likely be disarmed and have the weapon used against you.

Well, one thing to consider is that if he is untrained, he is probably grabbing the cane with both hands and pulling it towards him. Which is to say he pulling you into close very range while both of his hands are occupied and moving away from you.
You can let him have the cane once in close and render him incapable of defending himself without too much in the way of fighting skills. Close up and undefended should make it easy for a forceful eye poke and a couple of strikes to the throat.

I think the cane should have started out at being one and a quarter inch in diameter before they start removing wood on the cane making all those grooves and notches. Shark Teeth etc. My cane is very light light as a feather I have doubts if it would last more than two good licks hitting bone. Above all I still rather carry my all metal canes for everyday carry. I was raised in hostile areas some of the most violent in the US. My Father was a Marine and believed me to be naturally drawn to violence and fightting. I quickly took up boxing before any other schooling. I'm of Irish descent (pirate for sure because of genetic islander evidence) and a quarter Hun. It may be genes. I lived life more war than peace. Through no fault of my own I was the victim of conspiracy and trained through a member of the CIA Mkultra assassin school. I was trained in multiple martial arts as well as western gun trickery through the Mundan line only one generation from the man himself. I will not disclose the teachers because of criminal liability and after all they are still father figures to me and are not all entirely aware of what I was put through. My father passed away only knowing small parts of a greater truth. I always protected my loved ones. The only reason I'm not one of these killers on the news is because my mother broke through the mental conditioning and created a question in my head that saved me near the brink of death. I made deals with the US government and through service eventually I was exonerated for my involvement because frankly I only injured persons guilty bnb of greater crimes and or defended myself as a minor in threat of my life. I never murdered anyone. It saved my soul. I tried spirituality and hiding from war and violence but it found me. I realised I was meant for a greater path. I became a "no kill" do no harm style martial artist. This is easy to safe middle income Americans. Nothing to it. But I took on dangerous journalistic ventures, a profession in corporate security contracting (VIP specialty) and Veteran Mental Health and active duty suicide prevention. I was the guy in the epicenter. I never lost anyone. Never injured anyone more than I helped them. I disarmed people of deadly weapons under suicidal and homicidal ideation daily. I often told policemen everything was fine and to put away the guns. I handled most everything with simple objects like a towel. My jacket. A distraction and my bare hands. I'm the closest person you'll ever meet to batman. But I'm no billionaire. I coincidently became disabled in an accident trying to save the lives of 2 vets both decorated and purple hearts. My injury is the same one that killed Bruce Lee in the end (bad medicating) and ended Bruce Waynes night job. Explosive herniation of L4L5 and permanent neurological damage. Had to learn to walk all over again. After surgery never returned to normal. Life destroying illness leafing to severe depression. This all happened after 3 months of being married. I had to switch to a gun. My psycho emotional profile was not good and living in a really bad neighborhood again I was becoming a slow moving target. I had encounters. The police asked me to let them handle things from now on. I had to climb out of a very deep hole to find my warrior heart again. I did.
This isn't a brag. My belief system does not allow ego fanning. I was too ashamed of my early life and carried it around like a hideous tumor. In buddhism we should be willing to tell our path story as a lesson and not cling to any judgements of others. I'm not that great at it though. I mean to teach you something. It's this. Whenever I see overweight guys with fighting canes with a circle of people who do not need canes and are unbelievable as cane users... and they are talking 75% of the time nll or more... I know they are effective in a confrontation. Practice realistic confrontation scenarios. Watch videos of assaults. Then make a sport of it like wrestling and fencing. Defend and attack. Get the movements down smooth. Get the opponents into a position in which they can or.will no longer be a threat to you or others and then practice escaping, debilitating and or calling for assistance. Learn arrest techniques legal in your area for civilians. Do not cling to your magic cane. It can hinder you as much as save you. Make it more part of the confrontation environment and remember you nees it for balance and walking in the end.

Only an opinion, I like the video though :)
There are a lot of factors to consider in commotions, cases, and/or scenarios though. Example: Opponent Resistance, Dealing/Handling Time, Weapon Quality & Quantity, Frequent Realistic Actions & Habits, and Threat-Aggression Levels to name a few.
Nevertheless, nice video in elaborating the capabilities and feats possible with a walking cane. I like & support the idea that even an arnis/eskrima stick may not be allowed in some public areas although the sticks are majority for self-defence. As an Arnis Instructor/Swordsman, I teach and show what reality may look like. Like I say often, Train Reality for Reality, but of course in progression and safety limits. Before, I also talk a lot than show, hehe. Nowadays, I mostly show and only talk after the training/seminar and the folks like it more that way.
It's good to have these seminars for people's awareness. It's best to have the skills and yet not to be in a circumstance we have to be in a fight ("having when you not need it rather than not having when you need it"). We can learn a lot of stuff, but we will never know the outcome of a fight with 100% assurance.
God Bless people and may peace be with us all. (Pugay)

any weapon is only as effective as the skill of the person who wields that weapon. training with your chosen weapon is absolutely necessary if you are to have any hope of success with it. in order to use the cane as demonstrated in this video it would require some quickness, coordination, agility, balance, and confidence in your ability to fight with it. I say that a timid person, a frail person, a person with slow reactions and reflexes is going to get severely injured trying to fend of attackers with his cane. mostly he'll just piss off his attacker who'll likely take the can and beat you with it.

I think the cane by virtue of the fact that 1) you can take it anywhere and 2) It hits very hard and is capable of breaking bone, is perhaps the ultimate Self Defense tool after a handgun. However, I'm sorry. The videos I have viewed online depicting the way most people seem to be teaching how to use the cane are ill advised. These joint locks around the arm or hooking the neck and the arm at the same time are overly complicated and will not work for most people under the stress of combat. I speak from experience. Not only have I been involved in the Martial arts for over 40 years, I was a Police Officer in the South Bronx with the NYPD for 15 years. I made over 500 arrests and assisted in a thousand more. During that time I was involved in more hand to hand combat with desperate criminals than most of the people passing themselves off as Self Defense experts. I disarmed people armed with knives, baseball bats and handguns, all without firing a shot.
All I need to do is look at certain moves to know whether or not an instructor has real world experience. I recall seeing one video clip of Mr. Shuey at a seminar where he is showing a cane defense against a right punch. The defense consisted of "parrying" the punch with his left hand, with his right hand bringing the shaft of the cane up under the right arm of the assailant " supposedly breaking the shoulder" ( I doubt that will happen ) and then positioning it in such a way that by grasping the the other end of the shaft with his left hand he could exert great leverage on the assailant's right arm and take him down. Now there is no question that if you are able to get both hands on the cane in the position he shows, you will definitely have the leverage to take this person down. The problem with that particular technique is that you will never get there. The flaw is not in the use of the cane, but rather in the reliance on a single hand parry to stop the punch.
Imagine if you will, Mr Shuey or someone his size attempting to pull off that technique against the Bruiser who seems to be his co-instructor on the video here. When that big guy throws his powerful right punch and you try to "parry" it with your left hand, the lights are going to go out for you. His hand / arm is going to crash right through that parry and take your head off and you will never get to the rest of the technique because a parry is simply not a powerful enough move to stop a punch from a powerful guy. Even a hard block can fail under such a blow. And whileI'm on the subject of the Big Co-Instructor who appears to be something on the order 6'3" give or take an inch and looks to weigh something on the order of 250 + lbs, He needs Self Defense training about as much as a bald man needs a hair net. I'm sure a cane helps him, but most adversaries wouldn't even try him owing to his size. Further, for people who are selling the "go anywhere stealth aspect" of this device, to state that he was walking around a mall spinning it as he demonstrated here, is really stupid and obnoxious. You are leaving no doubt as to what that cane is and why you are carrying it. It seems his 16 year old son who called him out on it has more sense than he does.
I also think many of these instructors overestimate how much pain they are delivering with their strikes and underestimating how much pain some individuals are capable of withstanding, especially if on drugs. Reliance on the infliction of pain alone is a mistake. And while a one handed whipping motion can generate speed and power, the rebound generated by a strike against a hard object like a skull or a shin could cause someone to loose control of the cane if they only have one hand on it. As a rookie, I once struck a man who chose to fight with me three times in the head with my night stick with one hand. The blows bounced off his head like a bat hitting a baseball and opened up his scalp right down to the skull requiring 40 stitches to close so you know he was hit hard. Yet, these three blows didn't seem to even slow him down. He rushed me and attempted to rip my service revolver from it's holster. Luckily my partner delivered a two handed baseball bat type strike to his wrist which foiled his plan and then backup arrived and he was cuffed. After that, I began using my martial arts knowledge and augmented my stick use with that. I got up to speed real fast and never came close to losing another fight again.
Believe me when I tell you the best way to use a cane is to keep two hands on it about 22 inches apart like a night stick. You can jab and punch with it from either side. Or you can hit one handed at the legs where it is difficult to grab. Once you've staggered or hurt the assailant you can hook a leg and take him down. Don't rely on inflicting pain alone. When you hit something, break it. You're fighting for your life. Hit the jaw? Break the jaw. Hit with the hook in the eye socket? Break the eye socket. Hit the knee? Shatter the knee so it can't support the bodyweight. Anything else as far as I'm concerned looks great at seminars and makes for great theater and demonstrations, but it's just playing games.

I actually DO need a cane for walking. I can stand without it, but my right leg is too damaged to do much else.
So I have to work on strike techniques from that starting position.
I also have to defend my Mom, who is 91 and uses a walker to get around. So, talk about "Looking like a victim"...that is us!
I am a 230 lb. Marine Veteran, still in fairly good physical condition -- other than the artificial hip -- so that may be of some deterence value. But, as you said, I can't use my licensed firearm in every defense situation, or even carry it in many places. So the cane becomes a pretty valuable device!
