  • A lot of people are fans of the Buffalo Sabres. I am kind of one of them. I'm going through the entire Sabres organization - from the roster to the coaches to the offseason acquisition - and giving my prediction for how this team will fare this year.

Unnecessary video, the Sabres are perfectly capable of insulting themselves

“Benson did not have the year most were expecting of him.”
Dude, Benson wasn’t expected to make the NHL this year at all. The fact he made the team and was one of four players in his draft year who played in the NHL when being drafted 13th overall is hella impressive.

Honestly you're very much not someone who apparently watched the Sabres last year and are going solely by the numbers.
Thompsons down year wasn't because of him failing. He literally played through a wrist injury. Tuch still managed 59 points on a hamstring injury hurting his speed one of the keys to his style. Cozens should have played better, but as Sabres fans have seen before a head injury when you're young can scare the fuck out of you. If you watched them you'd honestly know it was the Oilers game that fully eliminated them that cost them the season and not to their own lack of effort. Granatos deployment during that game went from masterclass shutting down McDavid, Draisaitl, Bouchard and RNH to somehow thinking a 2nd period change up would be worth while... Again after shutting down Connor McDavid to the point he legitimately looked pissed.
UPL was already the planned starter for last season though his position was still reliant on Levi not coming in like a wrecking ball. You seem to forget however that Eric Comrie was still the backup for the season. You know... The guy that let in way more goals than what would've been expected. It wasn't a bad defense that killed them either it was the drop in offense from the big 3 forwards being injured in one way or another and still they weren't miles from a playoff spot. They were 8 points out. Comrie started 10 games... And lost 8 of them. So improve that and they could edge their way into the playoffs on a broken forward core. Because yes Comrie let them down whenever he played. When the bottom 6 of other teams look like Austin Matthews shooting on you that's the cold hard truth and that's who was scoring on Comrie.
Dahlin did get Norris votes btw. Peterka had started to emerge as the type of player you'd want for Thompson as well.
Now for the lineup. Zucker is most likely a 3rd line player for them. Greenway most likely loses his spot to one of the rookies and Benson most likely gets the chance to start the season with Cozens and Quinn. Benson may have only had 30 points last season, but he spent a lot of it being sheltered and when he did get to play it wasn't disappointing it made a lot want him to play more. He's small, but is defensively a pest. He will brawl with a guy 7 inches taller and 30.pounds heavier in the corner or position himself to block a critical pass and make a break as fast as he can.
No they should not be the dark horse candidate this year for the playoffs. They should with a healthy team come out and dominate. Their defense and PK have had a massive boost by the additions and the offense and PP should kick back into gear with everyone healthy.
As for the Savoie trade. It was honestly smart. No offense, but you posted this after his horrendous showing in the PROSPECT challenge for Edmonton. He's just not handling playing against men at all well. Last year made it obvious because he got injured doing a simple hitting drill under GRANATO the coach Mitts said trained really soft. Hope the best for him, but he's not handling the NHL level at all well.

Hopefully having a real NHL coach is the final piece of the puzzle. For years it's been first time coaches or soccer coaches

This guy really hate Sabres. I mean they have tools to be playoff team. They have probably the youngest defense core, and rather talented at the same time. Okay, goaltending could be more experienced, and there are some holes in the forward group. But that still could be solved, because they still have some cap space, even though they haven't signed Krebs yet. But after that signing they would still have about 5mil in cap space, but further strengthen one of their weaknesses. I would say that they will be a playoff team this coming season
