Very informative video!
I myself coming from jerkbait rods cant stand medium fast and middleflex rods simply because they just feel like a weet noodle. Althought im a newbie i prefer superfast rods like Helios 3d or Hardy NSX X. A budget friendly option for anyone who prefer fast rods would be TFO Axiom or Echo Streamer X. I casted both and liked them equally. Its true that very fast rods are very unforgivable for new anglers(speaking from experience) but eventually you will learn, and once you learn you will never look back🙂

Thanks for all of the videos ! Well presented in all aspects . I have been flippin flies since about 1978 and I enjoy watching every video over and over . So many of Us began with a 20 dollar Shakespear or Fenwick , Martin outfit it's hard to imagine how things have progressed to this point . Please keep making videos for new and seasoned fly casters . If a person wants the bamboo experience, but without the maintenance and other bamboo-specific issue, check out the (vintage) somewhat Hexagraph rods. A graphite rod with actions designed to mimic bamboo performance/actions. Plus, these Hexagraph rods can be used in salt, where bamboo, probably not.

I prefer high end stuff for all my fishing…I use mostly NRXs. I like them simply because they’re lightweight, powerful and I started my journey into high end gear on them so I know how they behave. The amount of energy I have to put into my brother’s Orvis Clearwater 5wt (another *excellent* rod) is far greater than the energy I need for my NRX 6wt, which is more powerful. THAT’S what you’re buying…nothing else. It won’t make you a better fisherman. It won’t really make you more accurate per se (using less force does allow you to dedicate more energy to accuracy…but meh…). The thing you’re paying for is user experience. Those lines get even more blurry when you consider the fact that the $300 rods of today outperform the $800 rods of my youth. If you spend $200-300 on a TFO or something similar in 2023, you’re gonna be in GREAT shape.

I agree with you - there is a big performance difference between the Clearwater and the NRX. However, there is a big performance difference (for distance and turning over bigger flies) between a 5 weight and a 6 weight. The NRX 6 weight will of course be more powerful than the Clearwater 5 weight; the NRX is a powerful rod.

Your ranges are off . Several Fenwick , TFO and others in the 230-250 can perform and last with any mid grade rod on the market

I’m new to fly fishing but have been building rods for 50 years. Why are fly rods mostly 4 piece? A one piece rod will be the lightest and perform the best. Over 8 ft shipping and transport becomes an issue so I built myself a 2 piece rod. One piece blanks are mostly nonexistent.
