  • This episode is all about Bump steer. We show you exactly how to build your own bump steer gauge for the cost of two dial indicators or digital indicators plus some scrap steel. We show you what parts on the car create bump steer and how they interact both on the car and on the white board. And then we show you how to use a gauge to measure and change your bump steer. Bump steer applies to any type four wheel vehicle which uses drag links such as Street Stocks, Factory stocks, Pure Street, Modifieds, Late Models, Drag Cars, etc.

    Amazing job explaining bump steer, I have been altering the geometry on my 2019 wrx sti, with adding full adjustment for caster/camber/toe I used my string alignment setup to rough in bump steer which I got the arcs really close but it’s not perfect & next step is to do it this way & make a custom spacer after using shims to get it perfect. Will be tracking car on road course & get into time attack so have spent a lot of time getting suspension dialed in with good components. This is last thing I need to do until I swap front LCA to independent caster adjustment arms then start the process over again.

    Hey dirt race life. Someone from road racing life here I love ur videos. I learn a lot here.
    Regarding camber: Should I ensure the camber at each side of the car is equal before doing the measurements? For example, if the tire temps dictated 1 degree more camber on the front left than the front right, would I want to reset the front camber angles to be equal before measuring bump? Thanks man!
    Going to build a tool like this. I hate my longacre tool

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  Рік тому

      Ok first. . . . Road racing! I'd love to do it but it sure isn't dirt circle so take this as just some outside your field type ideas.
      I think you should ALWAYS do bump after setting caster and camber. If you change them significantly then I would re-run bump because it can change a little. As far as temp differences with the same camber on both sides..... Ok that road specific but couldn't that actually lead you in a bad direction because it is simply happening due to the shape and pattern of the course. So if you tune to it at the track, all is good and you get faster but if you take that split setup to a difference course couldn't it just as easily make you slower than you would have been? just some thoughts :)

    I have a daily Crosstrek 2015, that has the following:
    Lifted 1.25 inch.
    Camber is aligned by the whiteline Bolts.
    Rallitek springs with Belstien dampers.
    Purren Endlinks.
    Double offset low arm rear bushings - for caster.
    Now, i'm thinking of the Whiteline Front Roll Center Adjuster Bump Steer Correction Kit (KCA313).
    Do the lifted cars needs Bump-steer coreection ?

    Great video explaining bump steer. Did you notice while compressing the suspension you were slightly moving the chassis as well? As a result of this movement and measuring height from the ground wouldn’t this give you an incorrect bump measurement?

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  24 дні тому

      Yes it moved on me and I didn't catch it at the time but the measurements were very close. I learn with every new car and you'll see on the car I built this year we did a much better job measuring ;)

    HELP! I have a center R&P from a Cavalier installed in my 1948 Chevy Coupe. If I have the Tie Rod parallel to the lower control arm AND the tie rod length exactly the same as the lower control arm....would you expect my bump steer to be acceptable? This is a street car...no drag racing or circle track. All rest of front suspension is stock...king pins, etc. Any input will be appreciated.

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  Рік тому +1

      I think you would be very close but the camber and caster curves will have an impact if they are significant. On a street car I would always tell you to consult with an expert specifically working on road legal builds. Remember, everything I am doing is to only turn left hand circles.

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  Рік тому

      It does have an effect but it's not a way to make adjustment. I think if you had huge caster gain or loss in compression then it could be an issue that shows up in bump as well.

    What tie rods are you using?

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  2 роки тому +1

      The inners are the 73-77 GM's which are the same as camaros but straight instead of bent. The swedge tubes are the conversion tubes that are 11/16ths LH on the inner tie rod end and then 5/8ths RH on the outer end and then I am using 5/8ths hiems which are for steering and have a built in grease fitting.

    • @juniorwhelchel6337
      @juniorwhelchel6337 2 роки тому

      Do u think it's better to run away bar or not to run it in pure stock class we have to run factory strings

    • @juniorwhelchel6337
      @juniorwhelchel6337 2 роки тому

      Is there anyway to tell what weight rate factory springs are without a spring machine

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  2 роки тому

      Junior, I have never run a sway bar on dirt. My thought on this is I want the car to be freed up and able to roll easily without having a sway bar modify the spring rate.

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  2 роки тому

      If you have access to a hydraulic press and scales then you can measure rate by putting the scale on the base and the spring on top of it. You may have to rig up a piece of wood or something to make a holder for the spring bottom. Measure one inch of compression on your scale. It won't be very accurate but it will let you know the ball park.
      BUT BE CAREFUL! That spring has to be secured with a chain or something because it's a missile if it slips loose.

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  2 роки тому

      I agree if a sway bar was used then it would sure make sense to go lighter on springs. I just have no experience so far doing it.

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  4 місяці тому

      I agree, you can't eliminate it because the front end geometry won't allow it, but you can get it close to zero right in the critical movement point and that's all we need ;)
