Callas will never be surpassed! She is incredible - a once in a lifetime artist unique in every respect. She will live forever in the hearts of opera lovers.
Basically, Tito Gobbi said the same thing. They had finished filming the Act II of Tosca and Maria was drilling him about how her singing was. “Did I project well, was my legato fluent, etc. Tito Gobbi looks at her and said “Maria, what do you care? You’re the only one among us they’ll still be talking about 100 years from now!”
GRANDE.
Maria raised the bar to such an extreme - this performance is 73 years old and still surpasses all the others. She may have had the shortest career on stage, but when an artist pours 150% of themselves into a role/performance - without proper rest and care - burnout is almost inevitable. Like a meteor, her light was incredibly brilliant but very short-lived. Thank you, Maria -
Please stop with the she burned out too early" because, she really didn't. She had a good thirty years, a good ten years of that was a thrilling international career that only lesser and more subpar sopranos could only imagine having.
There are times I wish she had never lost the weight, but her artistry demanded it. She had to be the total package. No one will ever vocally surpass her early years.
Nor can they even approach her years when she wobbled above the staff! At that point it was paradoxical that her phrasing and intonation were at their most powerful, “dopo di me, nessuno”
Most sopranos who have assayed this role poop out before the cabaletta, but not Divine Maria! She throws her voice into overdrive and rides to the coda like the goddess she was!
Sono registrazioni che comprovano la grandezza della Callas nei suoi ruoli migliori. E forse ci si rende conto come mai la voce abbia avuto vita breve. Una cantante che canta tutta la vita la boheme o simili non perderà mai la voce.......
This is a freakish aria! Other greats sing it with a caution in many places, you even get an impression they walk across a minefield )) Вut not Callas, she simply breaths fire and doesn't care about safety!
Amazing how the aria, followed by the recitative and cabaletta are so similar in structure as in Lady Macbeth’s ghettoblaster “vieni t’affretta ascendere” and “or tutti sorgete”!
I wonder what she could have done with Odabella on stage or other earlier Verdi for that matter. Minnie in La Fanciulla del West? 😊 Eh… Salome? 😮 Other roles?
@@Antonio-qm3bi Queen of the Night would have been too high for her, and I think neither she nor her voice liked Mozart much. I'm totally on board with Roberto Devereux though. In addition to the other Donizetti Queens mentioned above, I'd also say Semiramide, Attila, I Lombardi, Ernani, and Giovanna d'Arco.
When Sutherland widows say she was better than Callas, I point them to this Abigaile, the Florence Armida, the Rome Norma of 55 and the Naples Lucia of 1956. Nice try!

Callas is the only Abigaille on record. This is the highest level of opera singing.
Callas was unique and had a sidereal voice. In 200 years time people will be still talking about Callas and listening to her recordings.

Great sound! And this shows why no one has ever surpassed this performance (including Callas herself).
Che meraviglia !

John Ardoin she was a comet that soared over the world for 10 years and extinguished itself in just a few!

@@tonshaad1230 Very well said.

But she sounded good 1947-1953 😜
Or maybe until 1957.
How many years is that? 🤔

And like the singer Verdi dreamed of.
Tremendous!
VERDI + CALLAS = PERFECTION
I usually do not listen to old mono, but at your channel - they are GREAT, thanks
You should!
Maravilhosa , Divina !

Die Zauberflöte... Roberto Devereux. Just Imagine "quel sangue versato" with that melancholic mood she had when required (like spargi d'amaro pianto)
