I drove thru Richmond Virginia spring break 98 and skated and spot checked around downtown and was blown away by how insanely good/abundant the spots were and everything was nearly untouched. I absolutely remember knowing that some day that town was gonna produce some serious talent. Behold thangs got done.
It’s actually really weird to see Gilbert still looking almost exactly the same skating a couple of the spots, as when I saw all the way back when I was 12 and this car kept passing back and forth watching my skate my flat bar in front of my house and they stopped one day and handed me a vhs tape of the chronic and said it was important to learn my skate history so that I could one day pass it on and now seeing Richmond in this HD vid with a well respected pro that I actually skated with after I came back from the acl surgery I needed bc I was a dumb kid who didn’t understand the unwritten rules of skateboarding and so while I was skating with Maury one day at PG skatepark I asked him if he would ever give me a chance to be on Dominion or dominion west and he said if I beat him in a game of skate we would see and so I beat him and then he said no now we’re gonna do a game with using any obstacle in the park and I frontside flipped the bank and I think he either said he didn’t see it or something like that and I said that’s alright I’ll do it again and I tore my acl and I was like oh I’m fine and Maury said nope I seen this before you tore your acl and the look on his face was that I was done. 8 months later though I was much better at skating then I was before and I my big Ryan said we were gonna go to downtown Richmond and skate w/ some dominion dudes and we just went around Richmond spot to spot and shortly after that I broke my spine and crushed disks and came back again but with an opiate habit that took me out for 12 years but it’s actually amazing to see how good Gilbert is now and repping all my hometown spots is awesome. Also kickflipping that concrete barrier is wild bc I’ve seen that in person and the asphalt is really not that good especially where you land, that’s pop that at my very best when I was 22 and I could Ollie 6 interlocked boards standing up there’s almost no chance that most people could kick flip that high and ollieing 2 trash cans in a row at the fountain wow dude that’s insane, even homeboy chillen on the fountain was trippin on it
The other day I saw some banks at the intersection of carnation and route 60. . . Behind the building s right there. Looks a lil grimy, but what isn't in the richmond area. I can't skate anymore but still have the habit of looking for skate spots 20 years later.
I've randomly come across Crockett filming multiple tricks from this era: I was riding my bike past the stair spot under the Williamsburg Bridge when he was trying that backlip shove and then like one year later I watched him try (and land) a nollie inward heel on a bump to bar from the window of my hostel in Vienna. I think that was in the Vans video? Didn't realize it was him either of those times. Life is wild!
meh, not been a fan of youre boards. you have some good riders. but you're boards still needs some work. they chip to easily and i broke one of youre boards within 2 weeks of raw skating. maybe if youre boards were stronger, they would be decent, but as what ive skated. they still need some work. thats being respectful and telling you how it is from a skater to another.
Crockett is incredibly good at skateboarding, but I can't help but think he's extremely uncomfortable when he skates. Like he was trying too hard every time.
