- Wuthering Heights is a novel by Emily Brontë published in 1847 under her pseudonym "Ellis Bell". Brontë's only finished novel, it was written between October 1845 and June 1846[citation needed]. Wuthering Heights and Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey were accepted by publisher Thomas Newby before the success of her sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre. After Emily's death, Charlotte edited a posthumous second edition in 1850.
Although Wuthering Heights is now a classic of English literature, contemporaneous reviews were deeply polarised; it was controversial because of its unusually stark depiction of mental and physical cruelty, and it challenged Victorian ideas about religion, morality, class and a woman's place in society. The English poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, although an admirer of the book, referred to it as "A fiend of a book - an incredible monster [...] The action is laid in hell, - only it seems places and people have English names there."
Wuthering Heights was influenced by Romanticism including the novels of Walter Scott, gothic fiction, and Byron, and the moorland setting is significant.
The novel has inspired many adaptations, including film, radio and television dramatisations; a musical; a ballet; operas; and a hit song.
Saturday Night Theatre was a long-running radio drama strand on BBC Radio 4. The strand showcased feature-length, middle-brow single plays on Saturday evenings for more than 50 years, having been launched in April 1943.[The plays featured in the strand included stage plays, book adaptations and original dramatisations. For most of its history, programmes ran for 90 minutes and were largely entertainment-centred, such as thrillers, comedies and mysteries.
Saturday Night Theatre was noted as the major drama of the week on BBC Radio 4, until it was scrapped as a programme strand in 1996. Shorter plays continued to be broadcast on Radio 4 on Saturday evenings from 1996 until the relaunch of the channel's schedule in April 1998 by James Boyle, when single dramas were removed from the Saturday evening schedule. Since 1998, the main weekly play on the station has been The Saturday Play, a daytime programme that runs for 60-90 minutes.
There have since been campaigns to bring back Saturday Night Theatre,[3] but in the context of BBC budget cuts, that have included the 2010 axing of Radio 4's Friday Play (established in 1998, when Saturday Night Theatre was abolished),[4] any return looks unlikely.

Highly recommend the follow up radio drama of the second part of the book it’s called Healthcliff
This is much closer to the book , Francis is in it , I do adore the 1939 film yet it misses out huge characters

Iv read the novel so many times & this brilliantly shows we always thinks Hindley & Heathcliff are the complicated brutalisted psychological villains / yet Catherine is equally psychologically messed up as she suddenly drops Heathcliff in the Linton’s home & mentally hurts Heathcliff
Yes it's a very complex novel yet I still speak to people who think it's just a chick-lit romance. Duh!

Thankfully the full adaptation is on radio , Yet I do enjoy this part showing Heathcliff & Cathy’s complicated relationship & vile jealous Hindley’s treatment that leads to retribution & how Catherine should of run away with Heathcliff instead of psychologically head games . There’s also a book written about Nelly being manipulative the more I read the novel or hear this the more I agree
It seems to have many, many ads so it's an awful listen for me

What a terrible mish mash of the book. Not a word from the original work.
It’s so hard to find anything that resembles the book in full
Your so right , second half is rushed & all over the place , I kept hearing just the beginning.
