- Hundreds of workers at Amazon's Coventry warehouse have joined strike action by company employees across Europe and the United States. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Unions are calling for higher minimum pay and improved working conditions - and say this is the biggest industrial action in Amazon's history, designed to coincide with Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
The firm has insisted that customers won't be affected.

I worked for amazon for a few months and have never seen a worse work environment! People urinating in bottles at their work station because taking the three minutes to go to the toilet will make them miss their hourly target is not a myth, it is a daily reality for those who can't afford to lose their job. Evil doesn't come close
peeing in a plastic bottle with a cap is quite pleasant. I keep a couple in my room so that I don't have to walk all the way to the bathroom at night.
🤣
Never happens
@@mlentschlol that's just lazy. U need the casual walking standing from sitting too long.
I don't believe a single word. You're just a troll.
If people don't like working at Amazon, then QUIT! Go find another job. Oh, you can't find another job because no one with hire you?
Might I suggest you get an education to better yourself so you better your qualifications?
No to that? Then too bad.
.
Good for them 😊
They should have a pay rise
Shame on Amazon for not paying staff a satisfactory wage.
If they want higher pay they can go work somewhere which has higher pay. Unions do not help the workers, they help themselves and usually at the expense of the worker. People seriously need to stop BSing and deal with facts. Enough of this frilly nonsense which is not reality. If Amazon's workers kept leaving due to low wages, Amazon would raise their wages to compete and avoid other companies getting their staff members. Instead the unions force a strike, don't allow workers to work (in order to pay their bills), then when the union gets more money they spend it on raises for their own people, and the rest goes to part time workers who don't qualify for benefits. Unions also prevent bad workers from getting fired, which results in good workers not being able to advance into those positions. All that and taking a huge chunk of your pay, on top of the already high taxes, for a ton of frills most people never end up needing.
It was a scam when unions were first created and it's still a scam now. The difference is that the scam is much more powerful now and pay off politicians.
Imagine how much they'd have if not for taxes and union dues.
@@LabelsAreMeaninglessThis blatantly ignores the successes of unions recently in which thousands of workers have seen massive improvements in their lives on account of collective bargaining. The problem with your theory about workers just not working for amazon is it implies the individual workers have enough power and security to just not work. If Amazon is the only one employing then the choice is not whether to work for a better company or not but instead whether to bring in a wage or not. This exact issue of individuals being unable to combat large inequities and workplace violations is why unions were first invented. The rise of unions was a major reason that we left the "age of the gilded turd" in which massively wealthy individuals exploited workers not only monetarily, but also their health and time. Historically speaking, unions are one of the major reasons we work 5 day 40 hour work weeks instead of 80 hour nonstop work weeks. The unions are one of the major reasons that child labor ended and through their efforts workplace injuries and fatalities massively decreased. Additionally, the periods in which the workforce has felt most satisfied in their jobs commonly coincide with periods of strong labor. If you can find another reason we aren't treated like serfs anymore aside from the hearts of the wealthy spontaneously growing three sizes one day then perhaps you have a point. In my experience it is people in white collar jobs or in jobs where conditions don't currently necessitate a union that most vehemently oppose unions. While corruption is possible within unions, the best way to combat it is active participation and voting, not dissolution of the union. If unions were so ineffective, Amazon would not religiously train its managers in union busting as shown by released training videos that encourage managers to stomp out conversation involving terms like collective bargaining or other terms that indicate a worker may actually value themselves.
@@LabelsAreMeaninglessKnowing even just a bit about the history of unions makes your comment laughable. Enjoy your weekend. And thank unions for it...
@@LabelsAreMeaningless You're wanting to imagine a reality that existed before. Where the employer has all the power that they abuse endlessly for their own profit. Where safety regulations, holiday allowance, and even weekends don't exist.
What's so strange about your position, and it is a common one, is that it assumes an abuse of power by unions, an entity that only exists because of workers and the fact those jobs exist, and yet you fail to accept the abuse of power by employers. Why such cynicism towards one and not the other? A union can only abuse their power to an extent that they don't alienate themselves from their purpose (in the UK at least, unions can't force membership or strikes). An employer has no restraints in the slightest. And when we're talking about entry-level positions that require little in the way of qualifications, high turnover won't dissuade an employer because desperation always means that a position will be filled (that's why Amazon haven't increased pay/conditions).
So in answer to your last point: a lot, lot less.
@@LabelsAreMeaningless, huge chunk? How much do you think union dues are? One deal with a higher increase than would would have gotten without collective bargaining and the costs are gone
Amazon had to put job adverts on TV.
When you need an advertising campaign to get workers, you're not a good company to work for.
Personally, I simply don't use Amazon because it's obviously a terrible company. I can only advise others to do the same if they really care about the issues. A wallet can force change better than any union.

They have a high turnover rate, and there are seasonal surges. If advertising is effective, then it's worth doing. You're right that if people stopped using Amazon, they would be forced to change. Most Amazon customers are focused on cost and delivery time. Worker satisfaction is very low on their priority list.

Not to be flippant, but Amazon is paying a premium over the minimum wage for relatively low skilled work. There is an ample pool of unskilled labor in the UK, so these workers can easily be replaced.
Agreed. If they aren’t happy with the wages they should leave and find another job!
What does "low-skilled work" mean to you? Because I doubt you could do their job. Yet people strongly desire the services enabled and supplied by these "low skilled workers".
@@django3422 Low skilled work simply means anyone can walk in off the street with no specific education, qualifications, or experience, and start the job. There may be a brief training period, but any able bodied person is capable of doing it.
@@Ausf Right. Well, as someone who's worked in the warehouse and logistics industry for over a decade now, I can tell you that simply isn't true.
It can take months of going through a dozen temps to find just one person worth keeping on. It then takes two to three years of training before they're truly up to speed.
Most of these workers are not unskilled, you just don't understand why their skills are essential to providing the services to which so many have been accustomed.
@@django3422 I'm not sure why you're hung up on the word skill, but what you're describing is not specific to this industry. If some of the Amazon van delivery drivers were paid for performance they would deserve a pay cut because they suck and have a bad attitude. They either don't know how to read delivery request/instructions or just do whatever they feel like doing. They drop the package anyplace without even knocking. They snap a photo and couldn't care less if the customer actually receives the delivery. At least when USPS delivers the Amazon stuff they knock or leave it in a safe place. The best carriers don't have to snap a photo because they do the job correctly.
They do get paid for performance, are tracked heavily and that is what leads to the pressure to delivery quickly and take less care.
A series of good points, well made sir.
I've actually had to stop using Amazon because of just this.
They kept delivering my packages to any house that started with the same letter.
It was only the Prime drivers, all the independent guys and other companies have no problem finding my house 🤷♂
Odd my experience has always been positive compared to other online stores but they deserve a wage comparable with other Europeans and one that pays the bills. The alternative is that they leave these jobs and we have nobody left to work for amazon
I have had a great experience with Amazon drivers. And by the way, they take photos because Amazon requires them to. I feel bad for the drivers as they are under massive pressure to deliver.an absurd number of packages which results in stress and possibly dangerous driving habits.
They are heavily monitored and tracked with ridiculous targets.

Tories love amazon.... I wonder why
And all the labour voters use it ha ha.
This is where "unionization" fails badly. Today's union workers, when working inside, typically work in controlled environments ...dry, reasonably good lighting if not excellent lighting, have the typical breaks through the day (coffee, lunch), have safety systems in place, have a know start and stop time, with overtime options, etc. etc. So there is really NOTHING to complain about.
But TODAY, it's all about PAY, BENEFITS, BONUSES, PENSIONS, PENSION BENFITS ......which collectively ......workers just walk off the job with ridiculous demands that fundamentally FORCES employers to react to .....otherwise .....the company/organization goes out of business.
At the end of the day, if the company is providing a consumer product .....then the consumer ends up paying more according to the new costing created by the "union agreement" ....and so goes the obvious ....society's cost of living goes up .....thanks to unions.
Are the unions producing more? NO. Are the unions working harder? NO. So union workers are getting better compensations .....but they are doing absolutely nothing more to deserve these compensations ........BUT IT IS THEIR "RIGHT" TO FORCE THESE COMPENSATIONS. Exactly HOW is that fair to everyone else?
In the case of Amazon, there is very little "skill" required to do the bulk of the tasks. There is next to no education requirements .....and it would appear, none of these Amazon workers has any plan or ambition to improve their education status. They just want more compensation for doing nothing more than they are already doing.
What a way to live a life.
Then we have the UNIONZED PUBLIC SECTOR UNIONS whom TAXPAYERS pay the compensations. In Canada, ALL public sector workers, civic, provincial, and federal, are UNIONIZED. In B.C., teachers now make $115,000 annually, for doing 9 MONTHS WORK ....and every year, that compensation goes up GUARANTEED. All across Canada, the same thing in every sector, healthcare, policing, infrastructures, etc., etc. ......because the money source is a bottomless pit .......CANADIAN TAXPAYERS.

All those that participated in the strike, without a doubt will be getting the sack or let go of.
And given that the current figures of asylum seekers in the UK is close to 100k currently having their case processed, the government will most likely come to a decision to let them remain in the country with the agreement for them to able to pursue employment.
Meaning, early 2024, the UK will have an abundance of assylm seeking migrants granted permission to work ready to take on low skilled/entry level positions such as warehouse roles, packers and manufacturing processing jobs, online shopping pickers and fulfillment center positions.
Which are the most common types of jobs done by those that took part in this protest, as part of their role at Amazon.
And those migrants, will probably never complain and will be grateful that they can work, make an earning and start their new life in the UK.
