I’m glad this video was made because honestly as someone who used to work at an amazon warehouse and now a driver the warehouse is far worse and everyone acts like drivers have it terrible. Yes we have bad days but if you work for a non terrible DSP there’s things they tell you to do that keep the route sizes down, and if yours doesn’t they let you transfer between without needing retraining. At the warehouse you barley get breaks and don’t have that drive time between to sit down
@wsj - Another key point not covered in this article: when I was choosing CPAP supplies sold by multiple vendors, I ended up choosing the items with a "SAME DAY DELIVERY" banner. It truly amazed me that I ended up getting the exact filters I needed within 5 hours (in San Diego). I'm saying that those availability banners on certain items help to drive more traffic to the local fulfillment centers.
Honestly I'd rather stick with 2 day delivery but get a more exact time my delivery comes to ensure its not stolen. Also I think Walmart and Target have a huge advantage cause a lot of people will go pick up their orders and it captures in additional sales when someone decides to maybe grab a gallon of milk or eggs, bread, and other perishables that people are always buying.
As an Ex Amazon Employee, I can easily say that the faster they want to go, the more fatigue every employee will feel. I really think the Government should step in and make some rules about this Same-day Delivery thing like if it's not essential, there is no need for same-day delivery. that's why more accidents happen on the road because Drivers are forced to drive fast and deliver quickly
Because the Government doesn't slow down enough things already, you think they should start passing laws to stop businesses from delivering things too fast?
I understand his complaint, but limiting delivery speed won't do much. Would make much more sense for the government to put rules on breaks for delivery drivers or something
It's a competition between companies to get more sales, if both have similar options, but one got faster delivery, that one will win the customer. In the end of the day, companies don't sell product, they sell experiences, and that's the key of the competition. this. Seeing those items that say "order by 5 PM, receive by 10 PM" or "order by [this time], receive by 7 am tomorrow" used to be accurate but when you put it in the cart it suddenly updates to 2 days later
I've been pretty amazed personally. At my mom's house south of Charlotte NC i've ordered stuff that has gotten there within 2 hours. At my place in Virginia same day delivery might have arrived the next day but in the last few months same day has been same day. You must be pretty rural.
@@CsteggThis stuff still happens near the Chicago area. An item will say "same day delivery", but when you're checking out, it will change to "2 to 5 days".
At least 1/2 of my same day delivery orders fail to get delivered on the same day, regardless of the countdown clock. I sort of understand if an order is delayed when I place the order "within the next 45 minutes". There is just no excuse for delayed orders when placed 6-8 hours before the cut-off time. Edited to add: These same day deliveries are aslo the ones with the worst packaging and significant damage.
Amazon only sells brand name items but here’s the catch those knock offs just started filling for a trademark name witch makes them a brand. Also it’s impossible to categorize knockoffs all in 1 group like cheap smart watches a lot of people buy stuff like this
How about just pay their employees a decent wage and reasonable work conditions. In house they pretend to be concerned with safety, but only if you can still work quickly and accurately.
What we should worry about is the health of workers in this new program, the dysfunctional system that leads drivers to skip lunch and even bathroom breaks is sadly already in place and documented in the classical one. Amazon have a philosophy that the driver or the worker only is liable for the delay, so don’t expect me to believe that’s not where they’re going to put the most stress on in these same day deliveries.
@@codycastand why do you think that they have a big turnover of employees? Drivers don't stay too long in these companies for some reason. New drivers take some time to adapt to this dynamic and learn their routes, this translate in packages delivered to wrong addresses, mishandled or not delivered at all, which result in unhappy customers. People work for Amazon because is a job where you can start working in a couple weeks and don't need previous experience to do it (even driving, for that reason there are a bunch of accidents), but is not something that you want to do for a long time.

I do amazon flex and often times they send 2-3 drivers to the same house which is really inefficient. They could easily give one driver those 3 packages.
I recently bought 3 different things under one order. I intentionally chose the "no rush" option for later that week to have fewer deliveries since I didn't need the stuff right away. They still sent 3 separate drivers to my house lol

Amazon has been doing a poor job at moderating what they sell. I've gotten broken, used, or fake products from Amazon. They also do not carry a ton of name brands so I am now buying more stuff from eBay, Home Depot, Lowes, and occasionally Walmart. They need to encourage name brands to sell with them and get rid of most of the Chinese low quality knockoff brands.
I like that Amazon looks toward smart logistics, however how they treat people is horrific. Their use of speed over safety, use of contractors over direct hires, etc. I won’t lie and say I never shop Amazon, but I do my best to shop other companies when I can. I cancelled Prime several years ago. I know that by shopping a company that puts speed above everything else, what the cost is to human life. I’m willing to wait a few extra days for my shopping.
I would love to hate Amazon but last Sunday I ordered an OTC medicine at 11am it and was delivered at 3. Why should I go out in the rain, look for parking, stand on line to pay more, maybe they don't have it, and they're closed Sunday.

This is simply a reflection of why we need more parties entering the market (or our political environment). If the same monopolies sit in the market for too long, they simply won't seek ways to improve themselves or help their customers. And, at that time, they control how we live our lives regardless of the poor or boring conditions we are living in. These companies are insidiously playing "hey, this time, you push, I pull" tug-a-war games years after years. Look at our utility infrastructure, our technology, our McDonald's menu, etc. Please add more burgers.
I've never used same-day when I see it offered, because it costs more and I don't need the item immediately. Next day or two-day isn't guaranteed. I would say I get 80% on time. The other 20% come from one day to up to a week late. One package I'm expecting today still says it's arriving by 10:00 pm today. I know it's not because the tracking says it arrived at an Amazon facility in Wilmington Ohio this morning, and I'm in California. 10:00 pm isn't happening. Maybe tomorrow. Last week I got notified a package was delivered but I didn't see it at my door. When I checked the website, the picture showing where the package was delivered wasn't my doorstep. I went searching around the neighborhood and found it at another house. That happens, but not often. As far as Amazon job satisfaction, I feel for all those warehouse workers standing all day doing repetitive work. Employee turnover must be huge. This video just interviews higher level supervisors and executives in their executive office clothing. It's the workers down in the trenches that I want to hear.
I might be the odd one out, but I don't like it. I ordered 2 books yesterday, both were delivered today, but in 2 different shipments, that means 2x packaging, 2x handling and 2x transportation which all has an impact on cost and the environment. And yes, I am certain both came from the same location.
But it wasn't 2x anything. It was actually 1/250 x transportation. You are considering 2 separate vehicles being driven by 2 different people and making 2 different trips to your home. Reality is that both of those items were 1 of 500 items in the route that would have been made without your order. When the USPS mailman brings you a piece of mail they are not making a special trip for each individual envelope. Neither is Amazon.
It's really not close to 2x though. The weight of the books was the same, and the paper/plastic that covered them was no different than a Starbucks cup you threw away. Meanwhile, combining multiple items into one order takes longer and more labor than two separate packages.
Years ago when we ordered a TV for Black Friday from Walmart, it took forever to pick up in store since "they didn't have enough people to unload the containers outside". Nowadays they just shipped my order the day after ordering, when I honestly expected it to take a week or more. I'll be patient if the item is cheaper than Amazon 😅
shipping rates are too fast and people need to relax. you don’t need amazon prime. i don’t have prime and delivery is usually 3-4 days. still really really fast.
Very interesting footage & reporting. I worry about the sorter/packer & the wage they earn for the work they do. Are the standards set my supervisor roles difficult to meet?
they need to do something about the waste generated from all that packaging. i order amazon products everyday and some of the packaging is incredibly wasteful
This is very cool! My building at the other side of the state supplied the pods for this location. If I’m not wrong, this looks like VWA2 - I was part of the project that supplied the transferring of pods to this specific site.
It is absolutely crazy how fast amazon can ship. I live in a smaller city in Canada and to order an item on a Saturday late afternoon and have it delivered before I get out of bed on Sunday is crazy! It's crazy where the world is going and how fast we are getting there. A bit scary actually.
Reading about this in the comments, she doesn't seem to be aware of the harsh working conditions that many people go through. Just by reading some comments here about people working for Amazon, you can easily get a grasp of how it is to work there and how poorly they are handling this "fast, faster, fastest" situation.

Watching Amazon's warehouse efficiency is kind of like watching cutting edge military technology. Simultaneously horrifying and amazing at the same time
Maybe it's just me but....I can wait for stuff. The human cost is really high for super fast shipping. If I want it NOW, usually I can go get it. Or wait a bit. It's okay.
I sympathise to everyone that works for Amazon that isn’t middle management or above..the individuals completely disrespected but vital to the company,
Why does my product start in a warehouse in the state I live in, then travel across the country, and then come back to my state to be delivered to my home?
I don't mind paying the membership. Where I live is a senior facility, which has an intercom; intercom code is posted in the instructions. Only to rec'd a notification that I need to provide a gate code.......for the delivery. Maybe if the driver took the time to read the instructions he/she would gain entry into the building. Driver also leaves packages on the counter in the mailroom, which gives easy access to thieves to steal. Also, I check the box for all my packages to be delivered so there're few boxes and a one time delivery day. Only to rec'd package being delivered on each day of the week instead of all at once.
I know,it will be like comparing oranges with apple, but this video made me appreciate an Indian startup called Blinkit, where i order grocery and other daily needs and i get my order at an average time of 8 minutes which is just crazy 😮
Amazon Same Day Delivery is insanely fast, but honestly, besides groceries, have you ever really need clothes, electronics or other stuffs to be delivered same day??? I feel it's just frustrated for Amazon staffs
The speed you receive a delivery at has no impact on the Amazon staff. It's didn't come earlier because people worked/drove faster- it's just that the item was already in your city. Workers in a fulfillment center on the other side of the state for a next day delivery will have just as much time pressure, because the item needs to get on the truck to your city first.
As a amazon worker of this exact type of building I agree wholeheartedly with you I don't really understand why most people can't go to the store themselves most of the time by the time your package may or may not arrive you could've been back from the store with the single cough medicine you solely bought from amazon even if it was groceries I kid you not we have a amazon fresh warehouse 10-15 min away from the Amazon SDD (same day delivery) warehouse that practically does the exact same thing that the same day warehouse does it's just limited to only groceries. That claims to get delivered within 2hrs once again.
"We don't know what the limit is!" as they smile. I'll tell you what the limit is lady - Telling your drivers to deliver a package in 15 minutes when a GPS says it will take 25+ minutes to get there at the speed limit...Hmmm...I wonder what that is going to cause? Amazon prioritizes the delivery time of packages VASTLY more than the safety of their drivers. This behavior exists in warehouses as well. They NEED TO BE CALLED OUT FOR IT!
Something they’ve gotta work on is their intake of items. I’ve had multiple times where the wrong item was delivered, because somebody put the wrong ASIN label on it. Once it was just the wrong variant of an item. Not a big deal that time. But this last time, I had ordered a $8 spray bottle of Rain-X. But got a $70 box of “The Right Stuff” gasket maker tubes. Not a huge problem really for me, as that can be useful. But a mechanics shop could’ve easily abused that fulfillment center to order a couple years’ supply of that stuff for a fraction of the cost.
Amazon is lagging; after the pandemic, it's gone back up to a week or so. Prices at places such as Walmart are lower, and there is same-day delivery on many items I order.
This is great except many times it doesn’t get delivered the same day. I’ve had two packages this week alone not get delivered. They’ve gotten much much worse and I’ve been a member over 20 years! 😢
you should do a video on amazon biggest air site in the world, you'll be seeing a lot of stuff there but make sure you involve maintenance in it too and not just the operations side of it.
Some days I drive 80-90 miles just for 10-15 packages which is harmful for the environment. Customers need to understand the negative impact of these same day delivery and try to order only essential items.
If the customer wanted the item, they likely would have driven to a store over 3.5 miles away to get it themselves. Items in stores don't just magically teleport- they come on trucks just like Amazon's.
@@john40539 unfortunately some people don’t order essential items. They order bunch of junk throughout the day and choose the fastest delivery option. Therefore 3-4 different drivers get sent out all over the day in the middle of nowhere. Instead those people could simply combine all their purchases into one delivery day. It’s hard to understand the problem unless you actually do the job. Amazon also needs to do a better job at combining orders and only send one driver to an address/day.
I hate amazon flex. You use your own car. Your own gas. Your own car payment. Your own insurance. Just so amazon can scream at their top of their lungs saying it’s our fault the package was delivered 5 minutes late.
But why? Like why is this speed so important. Like who said we need faster deliveries? Like who can't wait 54 minutes after ordering to get their packages? Delivery means there is a time to deliver things. Who asked for faster delivery?
I just be happy if Amazon could actually deliver my package to my house and not somewhere else. I love when I get the photo of it being delivered and I don’t even recognize the house. And before anybody says anything yes, my house is clearly marked with the address.

I’m also looking forward to it. Using stores as fulfillment centers could be brilliant if done correctly.
I always get my target packages as quickly as promised- so not too bad!
This just means you aren't prime or don't live near a major distribution center
Target like to lie to their customer about the availability of their product in their store.
Hallo
Thanks for commenting. We are doing some further reporting on this and would like to speak with you off camera. Please email kaitlyn.wang@wsj.com.
As a non-prime member, I'm pretty sure delivery times have increased in recent years at the expense of offering faster shipping for prime members.
It’s a luxury, optional service, and that’s ok
They have increased for prime members too
Usually non prime orders are handled by UPS and USPS
As a non-prime member, I just received 3 packages within 24 hours of ordering. I was expecting them in 6-7 days
Dont purchase all the item you wanted at the same time so it would cost them more to ship, but enough to qualify for free shipping.
But, yes, someone need to stop these self destructive strategy, they have to remember their workers are humans, for now.
And ? The Business model stop's being viable. You need to understand some finance. When you do things like hike minimum wage a lot of jobs don't pay more they just become unavailable and only the jobs that could afford higher wage survive. Make the minimum wage 50$/hr Apple will Survive , McDonalds won't
Amazon has only gotten slower for me in recent years. As a Prime member, what used to be delivered in 1-2 days will now be delivered in about a week.
@@Cstegg Yes, I do live in a generally rural area. But even so, deliveries to this area used to be so much faster to arrive.
Just amazed how these workers keep these packages moving, i appreciate all AMAZON workers thank y’all 😊
But still broken or stolen
I try to buy local if I can, but I’ll always choose prime over a visit to a big box store
They should start recognising unions and stop knowingly selling knock-offs
Amazon only sells brand name items but here’s the catch those knock offs just started filling for a trademark name witch makes them a brand. Also it’s impossible to categorize knockoffs all in 1 group like cheap smart watches a lot of people buy stuff like this
Unions would make it hard to be fast due to the extra bureaucracy, they have absolutely no incentive to do that
ups is a union and 100 times better than fedex at delivery.. pride in work goes along way@@larsporsena9529
How does Amazon get anyone to work for them if it’s so terrible? You realize companies have to compete to get labor right?
@@codycastand why do you think that they have a big turnover of employees? Drivers don't stay too long in these companies for some reason. New drivers take some time to adapt to this dynamic and learn their routes, this translate in packages delivered to wrong addresses, mishandled or not delivered at all, which result in unhappy customers. People work for Amazon because is a job where you can start working in a couple weeks and don't need previous experience to do it (even driving, for that reason there are a bunch of accidents), but is not something that you want to do for a long time.
"You don't know yet what the limits is."
Now, ask this to the Warehouse employees at amazon.
You will see tears first and then feel tears in your eyes later.
They have some abusive practices there, for both warehouse ppl and drivers. I wouldnt work there 😭
Also, i dont use Amazon. I like shopping in person...
I do amazon flex and often times they send 2-3 drivers to the same house which is really inefficient. They could easily give one driver those 3 packages.
Right! My favorite is when we all meet at the same time.
I recently bought 3 different things under one order. I intentionally chose the "no rush" option for later that week to have fewer deliveries since I didn't need the stuff right away. They still sent 3 separate drivers to my house lol
@@UOAPlays They probably came from 3 different fulfillment centers. Amazon is so customer obsessed that they will do anything to deliver on time. There are times when they paid me $90 to deliver 10 packages 😂
@@siamimam2109 That makes sense. I didn't even think about that. I used to work for Amazon, but it was at a crossdock facility, so I don't really know much about the actual fulfillment centers.
This was fascinating!
I have been an amazon customer from its beginning and I am constantly amazed by how quick and professional their shipping and delivery is. In all of the years I have been buying from Amazon, I have never had an issue with anything.

Amazon has been doing a poor job at moderating what they sell. I've gotten broken, used, or fake products from Amazon. They also do not carry a ton of name brands so I am now buying more stuff from eBay, Home Depot, Lowes, and occasionally Walmart. They need to encourage name brands to sell with them and get rid of most of the Chinese low quality knockoff brands.
i’ve gotten fake stuff too
They’ve run off the good, name brands for a lot of categories and what is left are the cheap (often low quality) Chinese companies.
@@roxcyn Exactly. They took Walmart's berating of suppliers to the extreme and everyone but the Chinese just stopped selling through them.
Having a job is a blessing and fun ..

Fascinating. Specially if you think about the people developing the predictive models that allow to make the process more efficient. I guess this means it is a good time to be a Data Scientist
I believe most will be automated by AI very soon.
what a sad way to have an impact as a DS... In a world threatened by climate change, and full of social issue, let's optimise delivery times so that people can consume faster and more. That's definitely a step in the right direction !
@@edouardthomas2035 Data scientist average salary at Amazon 151k-244k according to Glassdoor. I don't feel sad for them at all. Unless you could work for an organization that does something you really care about and pays you a salary in that range, I wouldn't exchange the tranquility that amount of money gives you. @@edouardthomas2035 There is no anthropic climate change. Zero proof. It's a gigantic scam. And faster deliveries is just the way of the world.
Years ago I ordered a window AC unit for a friend and it showed up the next day for $2.99. Now if I want a pack of underwear it takes 2-3 days. I'm so close to giving up my Prime membership.
Good just give it up your complaining but go work there instead and see why
Then go to the store

I'm happy to hear that they are also a fan of the FAST & FURIOUS just like me which I call the FAST FAMILY.
Never worked in Canada. There is absolutely no need to pay for a Prime here as the shipment will take as long as it needs, regardless of the promises. Our personal records was a 2.5 week delivery for a "next day Prime" shipment.
Everything I get is almost always next day. That being said Walmart can do it same day here for me in Canada.
WSJ content is top notch lately
Keep breaking records and the guys at the top will learn to expect it!!
When Amazon just began, a professor of mine warned us to get our books on the site or fall behind. Now Amazon ships everything.
This is FASCINATING
shipping rates are too fast and people need to relax. you don’t need amazon prime. i don’t have prime and delivery is usually 3-4 days. still really really fast.

I agree. If we are too late to need something delivered same or next-day, we could have it ordered before. Say, when the bottle is 2/3 empty already.
Unionize all of Amazon..✊✊
3:50 no, it's to divert liabilities from Amazon to the worker, who often is considered self employed.
Very interesting footage & reporting. I worry about the sorter/packer & the wage they earn for the work they do. Are the standards set my supervisor roles difficult to meet?

Fast shipping is the least of our concerns
Not sure if faster shipping is nearly as important of a problem to solve then many other.
It is absolutely crazy how fast amazon can ship. I live in a smaller city in Canada and to order an item on a Saturday late afternoon and have it delivered before I get out of bed on Sunday is crazy! It's crazy where the world is going and how fast we are getting there. A bit scary actually.
“Amazon is gonna pay us THAT MUCH to pretend to compare shipping times in a massive commercial for them??"
I have amazon Prime and I can't even get 2 day shipping everything takes at least week
Where do you live?? Everything is 1-2 days in nyc
Reading about this in the comments, she doesn't seem to be aware of the harsh working conditions that many people go through. Just by reading some comments here about people working for Amazon, you can easily get a grasp of how it is to work there and how poorly they are handling this "fast, faster, fastest" situation.
6:45 No, if you located most valuble products at key places it does not take lest milage, you got them there in the first place, and if you plan wrong or people change what they buy its extra millage to move the suff to other place

I’d love to know how much Amazon paid for this puff piece.
probably only a couple grand, "native advertising" (aka propaganda) is cheap.
The bathrooms in these facilities are spotlessly clean because they never get used.
I'd imagine the first time you have to take a dump at work would be the last time.
Competition makes it best for the customers
Amazon is lagging; after the pandemic, it's gone back up to a week or so. Prices at places such as Walmart are lower, and there is same-day delivery on many items I order.
Wow....this is awesome🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Why are we such a consumerist society
Announcing in 2030: the push to deliver items BEFORE the customer even orders it.
This is great except many times it doesn’t get delivered the same day. I’ve had two packages this week alone not get delivered. They’ve gotten much much worse and I’ve been a member over 20 years! 😢
2-day shipping needs restrictions for ALL online shopping avenues, not just Amazon.
you should do a video on amazon biggest air site in the world, you'll be seeing a lot of stuff there but make sure you involve maintenance in it too and not just the operations side of it.
Just to be clear nothing on that conveyor belt is domestic! It all depends on foreigners
Sometimes I get offered same day but I'm usually happy with the 2 day Prime shipping. I plan purchases most times so I can wait..
I think I see my order.
I’ve ordered same day delivery and I’ve received the packaging but nothing inside! :(
Wish we had this speedy delivery in Australia! Takes two days or sometimes 7 days to get your items.
A problem with this kind of immediacy is that people then tend to expect it to be the norm in everyday life situations.
Life 'wants' aren't on demand.
Using personal unmarked vehicles is a terrible idea.
